*VisGuides: 3rd IEEE VIS 2020 Workshop on the Creation, Curation, Critique and Conditioning of Principles and Guidelines in Visualization* *Submission Deadline: 6 July 2020* The VisGuides 2020 Workshop calls for submissions about Creation, Curation, Critique, and Conditioning of Principles and Guidelines in Visualization. The ever-increasing global awareness, practice, and teaching of information and data visualization includes a growing audience of consumers and creators. Building on the success of two prior IEEE VIS workshops in 2016 and 2018, this workshop focuses on how to implement an actionable framework around guidelines for the wider visualization and non-visualization community. Submit your ongoing work and innovative ideas as short papers up to 4 pages and be part of a vibrant half-day workshop that will bring together an exciting program with papers and discussions. More info: https://nms.kcl.ac.uk/c4pgv <https://nms.kcl.ac.uk/c4pgv/> **Topics and Scope** The focus of this 2020 workshop will be to think, design, and discuss an applicable framework embedded in a larger research agenda to master guidelines in visualization by the visualization community. In other words, the workshop wants to deliver concrete ideas and meta(!)- guidelines about how the community can contribute to the collection, storage, formulation, and dissemination of guidelines—within and beyond the visualization community. Our goals for this workshop are: Discuss work-in-progress and current activities around visualization guidelines: new guidelines, management systems, teaching activities, studies, etc. Collect a comprehensive list of common and less common guidelines, including references, examples, counter-examples, etc. Based on this collection exercise, create and discuss a possible framework, or template, or methodology to capture guidelines. With this proposal, we provide an initial template, the ‘Guideline Report’ (see online). As empirical and design knowledge about data visualization grows, and as data visualization is becoming a more widespread activity and application, we need a framework and technological platform where we can propose, discuss, and study guidelines as scientific activities and where we can balance the formative nature of guidelines and their exceptions. Create and discuss activities to engage students, workshop participants, practitioners, designers, data analyst experts, and other visualization stakeholders to express and reflect on their guidelines. Discuss a research agenda on how to address open questions around guidelines and how on-going research—in any field of visualization—can contribute to sustainable management and discussion of guidelines. **Submission Info** Authors are invited to submit original and unpublished short papers up to 4 pages (excluding references) that present innovative ideas, discourses, design concepts, empirical studies, theoretical frameworks, social models, and work-in-progress in the context of principles and guidelines in visualization. The topics of these presentations may include but not limited to the followings: Comparative analysis of several guidelines for visual representation, requirements, and gap analysis of principles and guidelines for one or more visualization tasks (or application domains), Evidence-based critique of a principle or a guideline, Case studies of a principle in relation to a task, a visual design, and a group of users Proposal of a new principle or a guideline, or a major revision of an existing one, Proposal of a mechanism for curating principles and guidelines, Proposal of a framework for the critique of principles and guidelines, Proposal of a mechanism for disseminating and deployment of established principles and guidelines, Discourse on a long-term sustainable mechanism for creation, curation, critique, and conditioning activities, Discourse on the relationships and transformations between principles and guidelines and other theoretical aspects, such as taxonomies, conceptual frameworks and models, and quantitative laws, and so forth.
