The post will be based in the School of Computer Science. The candidate will work on a cutting-edge visualization project that explores hybrid symbolic-graphical ways to represent information. The project builds upon previous success of our group in this area (see http://www.fatfonts.org and http://www.transmogrifiers.org) and intends to significantly transform how people and professionals in a wide range of areas acquire and understand information. The candidate will help design and program a system that involves the creation of 2D graphics related to typography (letter forms), and to help with the design, execution and analysis of experiments regarding user perception of displayed text. Knowledge, experience and interest in any or several of the following areas would be an advantage: typography and typeface design, web services implementation, information visualization, perception, experiment design, reading. The Research Fellow will be fully integrated within the School of Computer Science and the St Andrews HCI group (SACHI). SACHI (http://sachi.cs.st-andrews.ac.uk) has over twenty members, is strongly active in the international community organising conferences such as UIST 2013, ITS 2013 and MobileHCI 2014. We regularly publish in the leading international HCI venues including CHI, UIST, IUI, AVI, and are featured in the press (e.g., New Scientist, MIT technology review). As a group we have several funded projects, organise an international seminar series, host visitors regularly and maintain a HCI lab with a wide range of equipment. As a HCI group we encourage group-wide collaborative research so there are opportunities to participate in in other projects, be involved with undergraduate and postgraduate supervision, in addition to working on emerging topics of interest in the group. The group constitutes a nurturing environment with a strong focus on the personal and professional development of its members. As a fellow you will be expected to work on the development of your career as an academic and researcher and will receive both formal and informal mentorship. You should have a good honours (undergraduate) degree in Computer Science, Psychology, Digital Media Design or a related discipline. It is essential that you have strong software development skills. In addition you must demonstrate that you are able to manage work responsibly under tight deadlines while leading the day-to-day work and development. The post is available for 1 year in the first instance, starting between April 1st and September 1st. The Principal Investigator will also work with the fellow to develop longer-term opportunities (e.g., fellowship applications, follow-up EU funding).
