Position Description

The Virginia Bioinformatics Institute (VBI) is a world-class research institute in the life sciences developed in a transdisciplinary team research model. The Institute's mission is to solve some of society's most important problems in the life sciences through transdisciplinary research and education.

To support the growth of its transdisciplinary research portfolio, VBI's CyberInfrastructure Division is looking for an Assistant or Associate Professor to lead Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Visualization efforts.

The Assistant/Associate Professor will be responsible for developing and conducting a vigorous, extramurally funded research program related to HCI and Visualization for life sciences; the securing of grant and contract funding for the research program; integrating HCI/Visualization practices throughout appropriate CyberInfrastructure program areas (infectious disease, and translational informatics); responsible for providing leadership, mentoring, and developing a team of researchers and students engaged in HCI/Visualization/Life Science research; responsible for defining, designing, and evaluating innovative user interface solutions using a transdisciplinary scientific approach for projects with HCI/Visualization needs; and pursuing professional activities as expected from a professional computer scientist.

Qualifications

Qualified candidates must have a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Human Factors or other discipline closely related to HCI; demonstrated record of publication in peer-reviewed journals; demonstrated capability of working closely with software engineers and life scientists (researchers, clinicians or epidemiologists) on user interface design and development efforts; demonstrated experience in interfacing and collaborating with the scientific community; capable of working in a team environment and a strong inclination for trans-disciplinary science; and possesses creativity, independence, and selfmotivation with good communication skills. Preferences will be given to candidates having experience in both basic HCI/Visualization research and applying HCI to real-world bioinformatics software development environments, as well as evidence of successful grant writing experience. Applicants at the Associate level must have an extramurally funded research program in place.
