VAST 2007 CONTEST Visual Analytics Contest www.cs.umd.edu/hcil/VASTcontest07 The contest is a submission category of the IEEE Symposium on VISUAL ANALYTICS SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 2007 http://conferences.computer.org/vast/vast2007 --- VAST 2007 Contest --- The purpose of the CONTEST is to promote the development of benchmarks for visual analytics and establish a forum to advance evaluation methods. The dataset consists mostly of news stories, along with some multimedia materials and background information. The goal is to determine if inappropriate activities are taking place and to provide evidence based hypotheses and conclusions. Participants have several months to prepare their submissions. Selected entries present at the conference. --- What's different this year? --- The general format of the event remains the same as the 200 contest but this year we also provide a pre-processed version of the dataset (e.g. with entities already extracted) so that more teams can participate. IEEE InfoVis 2007 Call for Participation http://conferences.computer.org/infovis/infovis2007/ We solicit papers, posters, artistic works, and contest entries for IEEE InfoVis 2007. In addition, we encourage the submission of proposals for InfoVis-related tutorials, workshops, interactive demos, and panels to be held during the conference week (see Vis conference web site for details). InfoVis is the primary meeting in the field of information visualization, and is held on October 28 through 30, in conjunction with the IEEE Visualization 2007 (Vis07) conference and the IEEE Visual Analytics Science and Technology Symposium (VAST 07) in Sacramento, California, the week of October 28 through November 1, 2007. Computer-based information visualization, or "InfoVis", centers around helping people explore or explain data through interactive software that exploits the capabilities of the human perceptual system. A key challenge in information visualization is designing a cognitively useful spatial mapping of a dataset that is not inherently spatial and accompanying the mapping by interaction techniques that allow people to intuitively explore the dataset. Information visualization draws on the intellectual history of several traditions, including computer graphics, human-computer interaction, cognitive psychology, semiotics, graphic design, statistical graphics, cartography, and art. The synthesis of relevant ideas from these fields with new methodologies and techniques made possible by interactive computation are critical for helping people keep pace with the torrents of data confronting them. We encourage the use of digital video to support the submission, particularly if part or all of the work covers interactive techniques. At least one author of an accepted paper must attend the conference to present the work, and authors will also be required to present a very brief one-minute summary of their talk at the opening papers preview session. All papers accepted at InfoVis will also appear in an issue of IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (TVCG). Posters are typically summaries of ongoing work that authors present to gain feedback from the community. In addition to having a two-page article in the Conference Compendium, authors will create a large poster summarizing their work and will be available to discuss it during the scheduled evening conference reception and poster session. Accepted poster summaries will be included electronically on the IEEE Vis/InfoVis 2007 Conference DVD, placed on the official InfoVis web site, and also distributed in a hardcopy compendium to all symposium and conference attendees. At least one author of an accepted poster must attend the conference to present the work at the evening poster session, and authors will also be required to present a one-minute summary of their work at a posters preview session earlier in that day. Owing in part to the mainstreaming of computer graphics and the democratization of information sources on the Internet, this new cadre of creative researchers has discovered the possibility of visualization techniques to reveal thought-provoking but otherwise hidden narratives. Often using little more than home computers and widely available programming toolkits, artists and designers have taken material evidence into their own hands and expanded the conceptual horizons of information visualization as a mode of artistic practice and critical inquiry. The IEEE InfoVis Art Exhibit examines the merging of artistic intention and visualization technique. We seek artworks that reveal information patterns in aesthetic, provocative and innovative ways. The goal of the exhibit is to prompt viewers towards greater introspection about what information is worth visualizing and why. The InfoVis Art Exhibit will consider the following types of work: * Interactive CD/DVD-ROM work * Interactive web-based work * Printed artwork Interactive pieces should run on a standard computer configuration (Windows Operating System, 512 MB RAM, 20 GB hard drive, 1024 x 768 pixel monitor resolution) as such systems will be available at the exhibit. If both standalone and networked versions of interactive projects are available, please send standalone versions. The goal of the contest is to promote the development of benchmarks for information visualization, establish a forum to promote evaluation methods, and encourage creativity and utility. The data set consists of data about Hollywood movies, including actors, actresses, awards, and similar. This years focus is on the design aspects of the visualization in addition to its exploratory and analytical aspects, and entrants are encouraged to augment the data set with any publicly available data. Contest entries will be submitted as a two (2) page summary, a video and accompanying materials. All accepted entry materials will be made available online after the conference. At least one author of an accepted entry must attend the conference to present the work. Authors of first place entries will present their work during the main contest session. Authors of second place entries will present their work during the poster session. InfoVis colleagues: You may be aware of the NVAC (National Visualization and Analytics Center) research program sponsored here in the U.S. at the Pacific Northwest National Labs. (See http://nvac.pnl.gov for more info.) This research program focuses on the area of visual analytics which is certainly related to and shares many motivations with information visualization. We have created a Visual Analytics Digital Library to house visual analytics-related educational materials including course notes, slides, video lectures, homework assignments, exam questions, papers, etc. This note is simply to advertise the website and to encourage you to submit materials that may be relevant to visual analytics. (I am uploading video lectures from my infovis class into the library this spring, for instance.) The URL for the site is http://vadl.cc.gatech.edu. Please take a look and do consider submitting some of your materials. There is a submission form on the site that assists with this process. The scope of the symposium, co-located with the annual IEEE Visualization Conference and the IEEE InfoVis Conference, is based on the research agenda published in the book Illuminating the Path: The Research and Development Agenda for Visual Analytics, J. J. Thomas and K. A. Cook, editors, IEEE CS Press. We invite you to participate in IEEE VAST 2007 by submitting your original research and joining us in Sacramento, California, October 30 to November 1, 2007. Visual Analytics is the science of analytical reasoning supported by highly interactive visual interfaces. People use visual analytics tools and techniques to synthesize information into knowledge; derive insight from massive, dynamic, and often conflicting data; detect the expected and discover the unexpected; provide timely, defensible, and understandable assessments; and communicate assessments effectively for action. The issues stimulating this body of research provide a grand challenge in science: turning information overload into the opportunity of the decade. Visual analytics requires interdisciplinary science, going beyond traditional scientific and information visualization to include statistics, mathematics, knowledge representation, management and discovery technologies, cognitive and perceptual sciences, decision sciences, and more. Your submission should help develop and/or apply the science of Visual Analytics, clearly showing an interdisciplinary approach. APGV 07: FOURTH SYMPOSIUM ON APPLIED PERCEPTION IN GRAPHICS AND VISUALIZATION Co-located with 10th Tübingen Perception Conference Tübingen, Germany, 25th - 27th July, 2007. http://www.apgv.org Keynote by Greg Ward SECOND CALL FOR PARTICIPATION ----------------------------- Research in computer graphics and visualization has great potential to benefit from, and contribute to, research in perception. Since 2004, APGV has brought together researchers from the fields of perception, graphics and visualization, to facilitate a wider exchange of ideas. Our goals are to use insights from perception to advance the design of methods for visual, auditory and haptic representation, and to use computer graphics to enable perceptual research that would otherwise not be possible. Submissions are invited in the broad range of areas at the intersection of computer graphics, visualization and perception. Specific examples include, but are not limited to: * applications of insights from perception to the development of algorithms for more efficient, effective or realistic modeling, rendering and/or animation * applications of perception in the design and evaluation of methods for more effective representation and communication of data * the study of perception and perceptual issues in virtual environments * computational aesthetics, stylization, and perceptual aspects of non-photorealistic rendering Submissions are particularly welcome in all areas of basic perception research that have applications in computer graphics and visualization. Proceedings, which will include the poster abstracts, will be published by ACM SIGGRAPH. Best papers from the symposium will be invited to be extended for a special issue of the ACM Transactions on Applied Perception (http://www.acm.org/tap/) By co-locating APGV 07 with the tenth annual Tübingen Perception Conference (http://www.twk.tuebingen.mpg.de/) we aim to further promote communication with the core perception community, and also bring APGV back to Europe. The keynote this year will be given by Greg Ward - he is a pioneer in High Dynamic Range Imaging which was first employed as part of the Radiance lighting simulation system that he developed during his employment at Lawrence Berkely National Laboratory. Greg has published numerous papers on lighting simulation as well as co-authored a recent book on High-Dynamic-Range-Imaging.
