CALL FOR PAPERS --------------- 2nd International Workshop on Visual Interfaces to the Social and Semantic Web (VISSW 2010) In conjunction with the International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces (IUI 2010) Hong Kong, 7th February 2010 http://www.smart-ui.org/events/vissw2010/ INTRODUCTION ------------ The continued growth and importance of the Social Web has resulted in ever increasing volumes of data created, published and consumed by users. This vast amount of data takes many forms, including text, images, video and more recently streams of status information from applications such as Twitter. Not only is this data accessible through more traditional means, such as desktop and laptop computers, but also via diverse platforms such as mobile phones and set-top boxes that bring unique constraints in terms of computing resources and user interfaces. Through the increasing availability of Web APIs, data that has traditionally been coupled with a specific application may now be exposed through novel interfaces developed by third parties, providing functionality not previously anticipated by the data owner. In tandem with the growth of the Social Web, the Web at large has experienced a significant evolution into a Web not just of linked documents, but also of Linked Data. This development, which exploits the Semantic Web technology stack, allows relationships to be expressed between items in distributed data sets, paving the way for integration of raw data from multiple, heterogeneous sources. Coupled with the increasing availability of APIs that expose structured (if not linked) data from the Social Web, application developers have a wealth of data available to them upon which they can build compelling visual interfaces. The ability to easily integrate vast amounts of data from across the Social and Semantic Web raises significant and exciting research challenges, not least of which how to provide effective access to and navigation across vast, heterogeneous and interconnected data sources. However, the need for intelligent and visual human interfaces to this evolving Web is not limited simply to the modalities of searching and browsing, important as these are. As the Web becomes increasingly populated with data, continues to evolve from a read-mainly to a read-write medium, and the level of social interaction supported on the Web increases, there is also a pressing need to support end-users who engage in a wide range of online tasks, such as publishing and sharing their own data on the Web. This workshop aims to bring together researchers and practitioners from diverse, complementary fields to discuss the latest research results and challenges in designing, implementing, and evaluating intelligent interfaces to structured or Linked Data in the context of the Social or Semantic Web. The workshop will serve as an opportunity for researchers to gain feedback on their work, and to identify potential collaborations with their peers. We believe that the potential for fostering links between a variety of facets of the IUI community will help to ensure an exciting workshop program. Information about the previous workshop can be found at: http://www.smart-ui.org/events/vissw2009/ TOPICS OF INTEREST ------------------ Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Interfaces o Novel visualisation of structured, linked and aggregated data, originating from multiple sources. o Novel interfaces for high-volume transient data, e.g. feeds, streams and sensors. o 'Living' interfaces to constantly evolving data, vocabularies, and emerging links between them. o Task-centric interfaces for structured and/or Linked Data. o Interface components for displaying/interacting with aggregated, heterogeneous Linked Data, e.g. components for displaying provenance information. o Lightweight components and processes for casual users to publish/share their own content on the Web. o Ontology-based visualization of collections of data. * Interaction Paradigms o Novel interaction paradigms for textual, photos, music, videos, etc. on alternative platforms (e.g. mobile devices, set-top boxes, shared/public displays). o Novel interaction paradigms with structured, linked and aggregated data. o Investigation of task-centric interaction paradigms beyond search and browse. o Ontology-based interaction with collections of data. o Semantic models for interaction and their reuse on the web * Empirical Studies and Evaluation o Empirical studies that can guide the development of interfaces for Linked Data. o Use cases which present novel visualization requirements and expose interesting interaction challenges on the Social and Semantic Web. o Lessons learned from user-studies, pilot systems and live deployments in the Social and Semantic Web. SUBMISSIONS ----------- We welcome three types of submissions: * Full papers which should be between 6 and 10 pages. * Short papers and position papers which should be up to 5 pages. * Demo papers which should be a 2 page description with a screenshot of the working prototype or preferably a link to an online demo. Submissions must be in PDF format and prepared according to the IUI format. Papers will be peer-reviewed by three independent reviewers. visual analytics and privacy: request for opinions / information / collaboration

Dear colleagues, I am addressing you as experts in visualization and visual analytics. I want to know your opinion concerning the possible impacts of visual analytics on personal privacy. On the one hand, results of visual analytics may affect privacy. On the other hand, visual analytics methods might help to transform data in such a way that privacy is protected but important patterns still can be detected. I am coordinating a working group on this topic within a EU-funded coordination action MODAP - "Mobility, Data Mining, and Privacy" http://modap.org/ The goal of the project is to raise the awareness about privacy issues in visual analytics, shape the community, and define a research agenda. So far, the privacy issues have been addressed mostly by data mining and, to some extent, GIS researchers. Please inform me about any publications / projects / people working on privacy AND visualization. In 2010 we are going to organize an expert workshop on this topic and have a possibility to invite keynote speakers. I would appreciate your candidate recommendations. Please also leave me a note even if you did not work on privacy issues of visualization yet but are interested in this topic. *Have you been wrestling with CSCW data? * *Do you have a visualization of use that could help you out? * *Send us a two-pager and share your ideas!* ** *We want you!* ** * Visualization for Understanding CSCW Data: A CSCW 2010 Workshop* CSCW systems can be very complex to understand and analyze. Users click in various places, talk to each other, and collaboratively travel through websites. Their work in these places can often be best understood through data visualization: laying out the data visually can make sense of a great deal of data. This workshop expands on ideas from past workshops that have touched on visualization as a way of understanding data, including the CSCW 2004 Workshop on Social Networks<http://projects.ischool.washington.edu/mcdonald/cscw04/> . The goal of this workshop is to gather people using visualizations to help in analyzing and understanding collaborative behaviour with CSCW systems in order to share and exchange tools and techniques, and collectively determine the utility of these tools/techniques and how to disseminate these tools/techniques in other venues to help other researchers gain access to these analysis methods. We solicit perspectives from a variety of CSCW authors and researchers who have incorporated existing visualizations into their analyses, or have created novel visualizations in order to understand their data. Workshop Structure and Design The workshop will commence with lightning (2-3 minute) introductions intended to get participants to recognize each other and become refreshed on each others’ work. The introductions will follow a prescribed format, including slides shown from a central source sent in advance. During the day, the workshop will focus on a series of topics based on the submissions. We anticipate that topics may include issues of *scale*(visualizations of large spaces, visualizations of small groups); *technologies* (custom-crated visualizations; use of existing techniques and packages); and *axes *(mappings on geographical spaces; arbitrary spaces). These will be determined by the organizers after the submissions are evaluated. For each distinct topic, our goal is to collect, classify, and organize the existing work, integrating visualizations to inform the wider CSCW community of the broad range of visualizations available for their analyses. If participants’ interests are sufficiently different or if the workshop attracts sufficient interest, we may break the participants into distinct breakout groups. Artefacts and results The workshop will produce a poster to be presented at the CSCW poster session, with samples of the participants’ visualizations, as well as results of any organizing or taxonomizing that the participants may have done, and resource lists that participants will have organized. We are investigating publishing the results of the workshop as a special issue of a journal. Participation In order to ensure intimacy, close interaction and fruitful results, we will favor a small number of participants (16-22, including 2-3 student participants and workshop organizers). Two to three students (in addition to those who submit full workshop position papers) will also be invited to participate. This will provide students pursuing research in this area a unique opportunity to interact with key researchers in the field and help define future directions. Students will need to submit a one-page paper describing their interest in the area of activity-centric groupware systems and their motivation for wanting to participate. *** Call for Papers *** *BELIV 2010 - CHI 2010 Workshop* BEyond time and errors: novel evaLuation methods for Information Visualization A Workshop of the ACM CHI 2010 Conference April 10-11, 2010 - Altanta, GA, USA WORKSHOP WEBSITE http://www.beliv.org/beliv2010/ DESCRIPTION The purpose of information visualization is to provide users with accurate visual representations of data and natural interaction tools to support discovery and sense making. These activities are often exploratory in nature and can take place over days, weeks or months and rarely follow a predefined or linear workflow. While the overall use of information visualizations is accelerating, the growth of techniques for the evaluation of these systems has been slow. To understand these complex behaviors, evaluation efforts should be targeted at the component level, the system level, and the work environment level. The commonly used evaluation metrics such as task time completion and number of errors appear insufficient to quantify the quality of an information visualization system; thus the name of the workshop: “beyond time and errors …”. BELIV 2010 aims at gathering researchers in the field to continue the exploration of novel evaluation methods, and to structure the knowledge on evaluation in information visualization around a schema, where researchers can easily identify unsolved problems and research gaps. This is the third edition of the BELIV workshop series. Based on feedback from past workshop participants, BELIV 2010 will be a *2-day workshop* to provide a more interactive environment where participants can produce a research agenda to be published online. Special Issue of IEEE CG&A on Multimedia Analytics

Following on the recent Workshop on Video Analytics at IEEE VisWeek 2009, we are pleased to announce the following special issue of IEEE Computer Graphics & Applications on Multimedia Analytics. Please consider submitting a paper and tell your students and colleagues about this opportunity. Special Issue on Multimedia Analytics IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications Submission deadline: 13 Jan. 2010 Target publication date: Sep./Oct. 2010 Multimedia make up 95 percent of the digital universe, and the percentage is growing. Most of these media are unstructured or, at best, semistructured, so it's hard to retrieve, analyze, and understand their content. Multimedia are now the main components of online news, blogs, medical imagery, general picture databases, scientific data, patient or health records, and many other types of digital collections. This special issue will focus on current tools and research in this very challenging and important area. Work on video analytics, either by itself or as part of multimedia analysis, is of special interest as are exploratory interactive visualization methods. Possible topics include, but aren't limited to, · user interfaces for multimedia analysis that optimize cognition; · tools for exploring multimedia collections; · applications that categorize multimedia based on content; · capabilities to fuse multimedia content into one conceptual space; · annotation schema for multimedia analysis; · automated or social methods of annotating multimedia for improved retrieval; · image, speech, soundtrack, and text processing that supports analysis of large multimedia collections; · methods for handling real-time or streaming multimedia; · methodologies for determining originator, message, and audience impacts of multimedia; and · applications that support reporting multimedia analysis results in a multimedia format. A workshop on video analytics to be held at IEEE VisWeek 2009 (http://vis.computer.org/VisWeek2009) will provide context for the importance of multimedia analytics and for some of these topics. We expect that a report on the outcomes of the workshop will appear in this issue of CG&A or in an issue around this time. Articles should be no more than 8,000 words, with each figure counting as 200 words. Cite only the 12 most relevant references, and consider providing technical background in sidebars for nonexpert readers. Color images are preferable and should be limited to a total of 10.
