EGC aims at gathering researchers in neighbor scientific areas (learning, statistics, data analysis, information systems and databases, knowledge engineering), as well as actors of the industry. The conference is a unique forum to communicate on recent research results, exchange ideas and report on industrial initiatives. EGC 2012 welcomes contributions in various formats: tutorials, focused workshops, paper presentations, posters and software demonstrations. The EGC 2012 proceedings are published as a RNTI journal special issue. An (English) extended version of high quality papers will subsequently be submitted for an international audience journal. Papers (6 or 12 pages) can be submitted in French or English. The 2012 edition welcomes three types of papers: academic, applied or industrial research, junior researchers (details on who may apply to this latter category will soon be published). The best contributions in each of these categories will be awarded prizes. Papers will be reviewed following a double blind process. Aims and Scope *** The rapidly expanding field of biology creates enormous challenges for computational visualization techniques that enable researchers to gain insight from their large and highly complex data sets. The goal of the first IEEE Symposium on Biological Data Visualization (BioVis 2011) is to create the premier international and interdisciplinary event for all aspects of visualization in biology. This symposium will bring together researchers from the visualization, bioinformatics, and biology communities with the purpose of educating, inspiring, and engaging visualization researchers in biological data visualization, as well as bioinformatics and biology researchers in state-of-the-art visualization research. As the first annual BioVis Symposium, this event seeks to emphasize inclusion and interaction between these communities as its primary impact. The symposium will serve as a platform for researchers from these fields to increase the impact of visualization approaches in biology. The breadth and diversity of biological research areas will enable researchers from all parts of the visualization community to contribute to this effort, and the symposium will provide an excellent opportunity to initiate interdisciplinary collaborations. Finally, it will provide an outlet and training ground for young and freshly minted visualization researchers with a keen interest in problems of biology and provide a venue for researchers in biology and bioinformatics to share pressing visualization challenges and potential solutions in their fields. *** 2. Topics *** We are looking for contributions on all aspects of visualization in biology. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to: - Genome and sequence data, including genomic variation data - Multivariate omics data (transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, etc.) - Phylogenetic data - Ecological and taxonomic data - Biological networks and pathways - Biological ontologies - Molecular structures (protein structures, RNA structures, etc.) - Subcellular, cellular, tissue- and organ-level structures - Visualization of image data, such as microscopic or radiological data - Integration of image and omics data for systems biology - Modeling, simulation and visualization of biological systems - Visualization in neurobiology and developmental biology - Systems and software frameworks for biological visualization - Integration of visualization in biological workflows or collaborative processes - Visualization and visual analytics of integrated data sets - Evaluation of biological visualization systems including interfaces, usability, laboratory experiments, and field studies - Creation and visualization of biological atlases and metadata - Processes for interdisciplinary collaboration between biology and visualization *** 3. Abstract Criteria *** Given the goal of bringing together members of both the biology and visualization communities for discussion, the symposium solicitation is purposefully broad and open-minded to diverse types of submissions. The abstracts are meant to support an exchange of ideas and can be based on work in progress. Each abstract will be reviewed by the Program Committee. Types of submissions include, but are not limited to: - Descriptions of work in progress and preliminary results - Demonstrations of new or recent systems, both open source and proprietary - Descriptions of analysis challenges where current tools fall short for specific datasets and goals, to inform the visualization community in producing better future solutions - Ideas for future research directions - Experience reports, highlighting lessons learned from the deployment of relevant previously published work - Reports of original research Abstracts may be up to 2 pages. Accepted abstracts will be presented as posters, interactive demos or videos at the symposium -- authors will be asked to specify the mode of presentation at the time of submission. All presenters will have the opportunity to give a brief overview of their work in a plenary "fast-forward session". Additionally, presenters of selected abstracts will be given the opportunity for longer oral presentation at the symposium. ====================================== Postdoctoral Position in Intelligent User Interfaces / InfoVis, Dept. of Computer Science, University of British Columbia (UBC) Vancouver, BC, Canada ====================================== We are seeking outstanding candidates with a background in adaptive interfaces and possibly information visualization to contribute to a project aimed at developing user-adaptive visualizations. Experience with eye-tracking technology is an asset. The project involves an interdisciplinary team from the fields of artificial intelligence, psychology, adaptive interfaces, and information visualization. There is growing evidence that visualization effectiveness can depend on user traits such as cognitive skills, knowledge, preferences and attention. The goal of our project is two-fold: (i) conduct user studies to identify the role of individual differences in visualization effectiveness; (ii) develop user-adaptive visualizations that adapt in real time to specific user needs, using information on the relevant individual differences as well as behavioral data collected via eye-tracking and other sensors. The post holder will contribute to the design of the user studies as well as the development and testing of adaptive visualization techniques. The candidate will also help supervise and coordinate graduate students. The ideal applicant should be qualified at the PhD level (or equivalent) and must have excellent interpersonal, writing and research skills, strong time management and organizational skills, the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines and work both independently and as a member of the multidisciplinary research team. It makes use of the principles in Gestalt Theory that explains the human visual capacity, such as proximity, similarity, continuity, symmetry, closure and relative size. They rely on the design of effective and efficient interactive visual representations that users can manipulate to solve specific tasks themselves. This approach is especially useful when a person does not know what questions to ask about the data or when (s)he wants to ask better, more meaningful questions. At the same time displays have become a pervasive part of our environment in various manifestations. While they were traditionally used to (mainly visually) present information they also become more and more important as interfaces to access and interact with digital information. Following these developments, researchers have recently started to exploit the potential of ambient displays for learning purposes, research cognitive effects, and promote the interaction of learners with their environment. In this workshop, we are looking for contributions in the intersection of Technology Enhanced Learning and # Information visualization; that concentrates on the use of interactive visual representations of abstract data to amplify cognition. # Visual analytics; that aims to support analytical reasoning by interactive visual interfaces. # Knowledge visualization; that uses visual representations to improve the transfer and creation of knowledge between people. # Ambient Display Design; that supports individual and collaborative learning processes, problem solving and sense making. *************************************************************************** TOPICS OF INTEREST: We believe that the intersection of both fields – i.e. visualization and Technology Enhanced Learning - can provoke exploration, insight and understanding. We encourage the presentation of the work by giving a live demo to provoke true interactions within the workshop in an attempt to get away from the mini-conference format. The results and discussions from the workshop will be summarized and analyzed in a short paper. In order to help us distribute more broadly how visualization impacts people's work or lives, leads to decisions being made, or actions being taken. VisWeek has been hosting the Discovery Exhibition since 2009. In contrast to a common academic contribution at a conference, however, the goal of an entry to the Discovery Exhibition is not to describe a visualization or vis tool per se, but to share which impact it had on the people using it. Sharing these stories with the community will help us all improve our understanding about the role of visualization in work, research, entertainment, and many other areas, after it has moved out of the research realm. To encourage publishing reports about the application of visualization systems to real world problems, we specifically allow submissions that report the impact of “previously published work” on its user community. Accepted authors will benefit from the following opportunities to present their work: - A 2~4 page summary will be published and permanently archived on our website: www.discoveryexhibition.org. - Their work will be displayed as a poster throughout the conference. - A short oral presentation of their work at a plenary fast-forward session. The content of a discovery submission is not about a visualization tool itself. Instead it has to focus on the impact that the use of the tool or the visualization has had on a specific user group. Successful submissions have to focus on the insights, discoveries, or general stories of visualization use in any domain or data. The description should show a real user community. For example, an entry could talk about insights made by a group of environmental scientists trying to find a cause of global warming using a specific visualization tool, and about the discovery process (i.e., how they made the discovery). The entry should provide information on the impact that insights (or findings) have had. It is OK to use existing tools. Indeed, we strongly encourage students to even study the impact of tools built by others such as ManyEyes, Tableau, or Excel! If necessary, the datasets can be anonymized, but no synthetic data is allowed. Submissions could, for example, include information on: - What discoveries have users made? What have they learned about their data that they did not know before? What insights have they gained? - What impact did the findings, insights, or discoveries have on their community? - What surprising uses of visualization tools were seen? Were tools re-appropriated to answer very different questions than they were designed for? - What was necessary to integrate a system or tool into everyday work practices? What were the obstacles to introducing new visualization technologies (if any)? This trend is associated with the increasing availability of a wide spectrum of high-level data integration tools - such as mash-up platforms - that enabled users to develop novel applications and business scenarios. As the richness and value of data increases, applications must provide users with visualizations and interaction paradigms that leverage properties such as the underlying data relationships, source type, provenance, and quality. This is a major change of paradigm with respect to traditional document integration and navigation, as the interaction with data object repositories proved to be a challenging task for application developers. To address these issues, cross fertilization between different disciplines is mandatory: existing approaches for Web service engineering, integration and composition should be merged with data visualization and interaction methodologies with the purpose of identifying the best interaction and visualization paradigms for data-centric Web Services. Topics of interest are related to the context of data-centric Web Services and include, but are not limited to: * Data-centric Web Service integration * Visualization of integrated heterogeneous data on the Web * Interfaces for Web-scale and large-scale data search and exploration * Linked Data visualization and exploration * Taxonomies and ontologies for data visualization * Lightweight (semantic) metadata or knowledge integration * Conceptual models for data visualization and exploration * Data visualization for next-generation mobile Web-services * Studies on quality, usability, effectiveness of data visualization techniques * Innovative uses of tag clouds * Ambient information displays * Data visualization for large screens and interactive tablets * Augmented reality and cross-media interfaces * Visualizations for multimodal interaction Tools for Web data visualizations * Relevant Web Service Applications: Search, Semantic Web, Social Web and Web 2.0, Adaptive and personalized Web applications, SaaS, Business Intelligence, Data Warehouse, Enterprise 2.0 SUBMISSION GUIDELINES AND PROCEEDINGS ------------------------------------- Papers should explore open research problems, as well as provide advances in the areas of the workshop's core topics. Papers submitted to DATAVIeW ‘11 must not have been accepted for publication elsewhere or be under review for another workshop or conference. All papers will be peer-reviewed by at least three PC members. * Full research and experience papers (maximum length: 8 pages) * Short Papers (maximum length: 5 pages) * Position Statements (maximum length: 3 pages) Paper submissions will have to be formatted in the style of the Springer Publications format for Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) and are to be submitted electronically in PDF format via EasyChair (https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=dataview2011) All submissions will be peer-reviewed by members of the international program committee. Paper acceptance will be based on originality, significance, technical soundness, and clarity of presentation. Workshop papers will be published as CEUR-WS Proceedings. At least one author of an accepted paper must register and participate in the workshop.
