We are looking for Post-Docs to join the Army Research Laboratory (Adelphi, MD) in the area of Cyber-Security. This is a unique opportunity to work with actual analysts on real data. Post-Docs can be funded through either NRC or ORAU. We can also work with Scholarship for Service students. The main limitation is that we can only take US citizens. Please feel free to contact me with any questions (Robert.Erbacher at gmail.com) The main focus of the research is described below; though we are looking to expand our capabilities: The goal of this research is to examine the issues underlying cyber security, devising novel theoretical constructs on which future cyber security advances will be based. Research focuses on developing theories, models, and understanding that will lead to more effective intrusion detection techniques (e.g., how data can be effectively visualized for decision makers and how existing information can be acquired and fused with the effect of engendering greater understanding of events. Some specific areas of research being considered include but are not limited to: (1) exploring models for the representation of cyber security (e.g., game theory); (2) exploring ensemble techniques for improved detection with consideration of Byzantine General type attacks; (3) considering forensics and anti-forensics in the context of cyber security, both as a representational model as well as an analysis paradigm; (4) considering behavior as a fundamental indicator in detection and analysis; (5) acquiring improved network understanding with the goal of improving detection; and (6) developing novel detectors based on improved understanding to achieve low FP and FN. This is an opportunity to have a significant impact on future cyber security research, work with actual analysts in the network analysis domain, validate theories with ARL scientists, and test techniques on real-world data. The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers and industry practitioners interested in text visualization, text analytics, and visual analytics, to define the emerging fields of visual text analytics, and to discuss ideas, techniques, and applications to support decision making in different domains. Topics: We invite paper submissions that address any topic related to visual text analytics and application domains especially how interactive visual text analytics can facilitate decision making. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: · Visual and interaction design for text analytics · Visual representation, structure, metaphors for text · Perception and cognition in text visualizations · Systems, languages, and architectures for text analytics · Methodologies, processes for visual text analysis · Collaborative analysis of text corpora · Real-time visualization of streaming text data · Visual text analytics in social media · Industry-specific applications of visual text analytics (e.g. Retail, Healthcare, Government, etc.) · Studies of analytic work on document collections · Evaluation of visualization techniques; Metrics and bench-marks · Datasets and tasks for visual text analytics to facilitate decision making · Representations of uncertainty in text analytics Submission: We are looking for research and industry papers related to visual text analytics with a focus on facilitating human decision making. WikiViz 2011: Visualizing the impact of Wikipedia - call for participation

We are proud to announce the second data challenge co-organized this summer by the Wikimedia Foundation. WikiSym and the Wikimedia Foundation are jointly launching WikiViz 2011 – a call for data/information visualization experts, computational journalists, data artists and data scientists to create the most insightful visualization of Wikipedia’s impact. The goal of the competition is to use open datasets to help improve our understanding of how Wikipedia is affecting the world beyond the scope of its own community. The award: The WikiViz 2011 Awarding Ceremony will take place on October 4, at the WikiSym 2011 venue, the Microsoft Research Silicon Valley campus (Mountain View, California). The ceremony will be introduced by a keynote by Jeff Heer (Stanford University), on the impact of emerging visualization techniques to understand open collaboration today. Three finalist teams (1 winner, 2 runners-up) will be invited to present their work at WikiSym 2011. Travel expenses and registration fees will be covered for a delegate per team. The works from these three teams will be showcased at the WikiSym 2011 exhibit, presented during the WikiViz awards ceremony and featured by our Knowledge and Media Partners: El Mundo.es, the largest digital newspaper in Spanish by readership worldwide, as well as four among the leading outlets and organizations in data visualization: FlowingData, Information Aesthetics, Visualizing.org and Periscopic. Unidad Editorial will also run a dedicated “Public's choice” track among the top 10 submissions received. The winner will be featured on the digital edition of El Mundo. In parallel with this, unprecedented amounts of information have entered the public domain as a result of both top-down policy pressures and 'bottom-up' social activism. This process in turn has given birth to new cultural movements, opportunities for creativity, forms of information visualisation, and modes of content production. This free one-day conference brings together journalists, academics, developers, artists, activists and business people to reflect upon these phenomena, show work, exchange experiences and signpost future trends. The conference will be followed by an exhibition opening of work produced as part of/Data Art/, an AHRC funded research project exploring how broadcast and news data can be reformatted, explored and navigated using information visualisations.
