Business Intelligence (BI) is a domain where data, knowledge and users are tightly related. Data in BI are stored in Data Warehouses and are generally large, heterogeneous, geo-localized and time-dependent. Visualisations in BI must be intuitive and must support an interactive, collaborative and ubiquitous discovery process. These visualisations must deal both with the exploration of data and knowledge, and also with the presentation of results to managers. Open Data (OD) share common properties with BI from the data analysis and visualisation points of view. OD represents a recent issue that concerns the free delivery of a huge amount of information produced by public or private organizations and other data providers. Such Open Datasets cover various topics including politics, taxes, citizens, cities, health, education etc. The users who wish to explore such datasets are often citizens, journalists, politicians, managers and other data or business analysts. In this area, the visualisations are expected to help the users in their exploration of this huge amount of information. This may concern various aspects of visual and interactive methods (overview of a large collection of Open datasets, details on an dataset, interactive discovery, user interfaces, aesthetics, etc). BI and OD thus represent important challenges in the visualisation domain. The aim of this symposium is precisely to make a state of the art and to contribute to these challenging objectives by covering all aspects of interactive visualisations in BI and OD, from both a theoretical and practical point of view. TOPICS The IEEE InfoVis conference solicits research papers on diverse topics related to information visualization. Information visualization, broadly defined, involves the design of visual data representations and interaction techniques that support human activities, where the spatial layout of the visual representation is chosen by the designer. DEMO PAPERS Demo papers (up to 2 pages) describe previously un-presented prototypes and systems and will be accompanied by a demonstration during a dedicated session at the conference. Demo paper submissions must include a description of hardware and software requirements on a separate sheet. Demonstrators will use their personal equipment. Accepted demo submissions will be included in the Proceedings published by ACM Press and will be available in the ACM Digital Library. INDUSTRY PAPERS Industry papers (up to 2 pages) address topics which are particularly relevant to the industrial world and are not necessarily intended to present research work only. Preferably, they are co-authored by at least one person from industry. Contributions concerning (amongst others) challenging research and development, innovative business cases, market insights, industrial research strategy, showcases and case studies, best practices and lessons learned, are welcomed. Accepted submissions will be included in the Adjunct Proceedings of the Conference. WORKSHOP PROPOSALS AVI 2014 will be a forum for workshops on emerging as well as established topics relevant to interface research and practice. The aims of workshops are to offer an opportunity to meet in the context of a focused and interactive discussion, to develop understanding, to exchange experiences, to build research communities and to pave the ground towards future developments. Workshops should ideally foster discussion and exchange rather than being miniaturized conference sessions. Workshops will be held on Tuesday May 27, 2014. A workshop may be half-day or full day in length, and typically have 15 to 20 participants. The extended abstract of the workshops and a selection of the best position papers will appear in the conference proceedings and in the ACM Digital Library. Persons interested in participating to an accepted workshop can submit a position paper to the organizers of that workshop, but workshop participation will be open to any AVI 2014 participant, upon place availability. "RE-CREATE: Theories, Methods and Practices of Research and Creation in the Histories of Media Arts and Sciences" will address the central question of what theories, methodologies and techniques can be used to understand past, present and indeed, future paradigms of creative material practice involving technologies within research contexts from a historical and critical point of view. This is a timely question for the MAH conferences as the issue of how material based practices within technical culture create new knowledge has been explicit and central to the historical roots of media art, design, science and technology. After Riga 2013 this fall, Liverpool 2011, Melbourne 2009, Berlin 2007 and Banff 2005, the Media Art Histories board is pleased to grant the 10th Anniversary conference to Montreal. RE-CREATE will be hosted by the Hexagram Centre for Research-Creation in Media Art and Technology at Concordia University and the UQAM (Université du Québec à Montréal) in collaboration with McGill University (Department of Art History and Communication Studies; Media@McGill; * CIRMMT-Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Music and Media Technology).
