Postdoctoral Fellowship in Visualization for Biology at Harvard University The Visual Computing Group (VCG) in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) at Harvard University seeks motivated postdoctoral fellows with a Ph.D. in computer science/engineering, bioinformatics, or a related field to work on varied research projects in visual data analysis. Potential candidates should possess a strong background in the fields of visualization and visual analytics, bioinformatics or similar areas to conduct visualization projects applied to biological and biochemical data. In addition to working closely with scientists, industry partners, and graduate students on research projects, the candidate is expected to actively participate in writing grant proposals. Watson Research Center is looking for research scientists with interest in the field of data visualization and visual analytics, to design next-generation user interfaces for making sense of big data, particularly in the healthcare domain. The Research Scientist will be working alongside visualization, machine learning, and medical researchers performing cutting-edge research in data-driven medicine. The ideal candidate should possess or be nearing completion of a doctorate in computer science or related field with a track record in interactive data visualization and visual analytics research, demonstrated with publications at premier venues, including IEEE InfoVis, IEEE VAST, ACM CHI, and ACM UIST. We are particularly interested in candidates with strong technical skills who can generate highly novel ideas and execute them rapidly. REU Site funded by NSF ACI Award 1359223. Who should apply: all undergraduate students, enrolled in an undergraduate university/college; priority consideration will be given to members of underrepresented groups and students with limited research resources at their home institutions; however, all students with an interest in visualization are encouraged to apply. As of July 2013, Asia accounts for the largest share of online users in the world at 48.4%, followed by 21.8% from the Americas, and 19% from Europe. With this global development, the diversity of user languages on the Web has increased dramatically, leading to new challenges and opportunities for information access providers and consumers. The MWA workshop will bring together researchers working on Cross-/Multilingual Search & Discovery, the Multilingual Social Web, as well as the Multilingual Semantic Web, in order to promote the exchange of complementary ideas and applicable/transferrable techniques between these areas. Current information systems, however, show as a particular point of failure the vagueness between user search terms and the knowledge orders of the information space in question. Studies in interactive information seeking behavior have confirmed that the ability to browse an information space and observe similarities and dissimilarities between information objects is crucial for accidental encountering and the creative use of information. This is in particular true for heterogeneous information spaces within the open web. Some kind of guided searching therefore becomes more and more important in order to precisely discover information without knowing the right search terms. Knowledge mapping encompasses all attempts to use visualizations to gain insights into the structure and evolution of large-scale information spaces. Knowledge maps can take the form of network visualizations, heat maps, tree maps or specific, map like arrangements of search results. However, most maps are static visualizations made for special purposes, and usually neither interactive nor dynamic. Moreover, not much of the experiences made in knowledge mapping have ever been implemented in online interfaces to digital libraries and collections, nor is there a stable and continuous knowledge exchange between the “map makers” on the one hand and the Information Retrieval (IR) specialists on the other hand. Thus, knowledge maps of digital library collections are promising navigation tools through knowledge spaces but still far away from being applicable for searching - due to a lack of models that properly combine insights of the two strands. The focused issue therefore aims at bringing together these two communities in order to discuss the potential of interactive knowledge maps for information seeking purposes and to create a common ground for experiments aiming at the incorporation of knowledge maps into IR models at the level of the user interface. Therefore, the leading research questions for this special issue are twofold: How can knowledge maps be utilized for information seeking in large information spaces?
