PhD scholarship in Human-Computer Interaction and Information Visualization We invite applications for a fully funded PhD scholarship in human-computer interaction and information visualization. The candidate will work at the Human-Centered Computing Group at University of Copenhagen (http://www.diku.dk/english/research/HCC) in a research center that offers a unique opportunity to do visualization research in collaboration with leading companies in bio-based production. The candidate will be working in the BIOPRO2 research center (BIO-based PROduction: TOwards the next generation of optimized and sustainable processes, http://biopro.nu<http://biopro.nu/>). The scholarship is funded by Innovation Fund Denmark and will be carried out at the Human-Centered Computing Section at Department of Computer Science, University of Copenhagen in collaboration between Technical University of Denmark, University of Copenhagen, and world-leading companies in bio-based production. The PhD candidate will be doing user-centered design of visualizations of sensor data and models in bio-based production systems. This relates primarily to research in human-computer interaction, information visualization, and visual analytics. The PhD student will develop prototypes that visualize data efficiently for different stakeholders and evaluate the visualizations both in laboratory studies and in field deployment within the industry partners. == Qualifications == Successful candidates must: * Have a Master's degree in computer science or a field providing equivalent qualifications. * Have completed a Master's thesis within human-computer interaction, information visualization, visual analytics, or similar topic. * Have strong programming skills (Java, JavaScript, C#, or similar). * Have the ability to work independently within an interdisciplinary team and in collaboration with company stakeholders. * If candidates have graduated more than 2 years ago, they must document work experience relevant to the objectives and qualifications mentioned above for the interim period. * Be proficient in English, both in speaking and writing. Nevertheless, new challenges, problems and issues have appeared in the context of knowledge representation in AI that involve the logical manipulation of increasingly large information sets (see for example Semantic Web, the Open Linked Data initiative, Social Networks etc.) Therefore, research into KRR must move towards investigating structures for representation optimally manipulated to perform large scale reasoning, given very new and different constraints to those existing only few years ago. Included in this new generation of KRR systems are graph-based knowledge representation formalisms. Such graph-based techniques have been successfully deployed in different research areas as dedicated formalisms. The advantages of graph-based KRR techniques are three-fold: (1) graphs provide a natural paradigm for modeling domains with a very complex structure; (2) a graph-based knowledge representation allows for a very intuitive graphical explanation of the knowledge reasoning process and (3) a graph-based knowledge representation typically allows for structure-based optimization of the reasoning process. Graph-based knowledge representation and reasoning is thus a growing area of research, spanning across different domains, with more and more important contributions appearing over the last few years. It is the investigation of further developments of KRR graph techniques that we address within this workshop. The workshop welcomes contributions on graph-based representation, query and reasoning paradigms (e.g. Baysian Networks (BNs), Semantic Networks (SNs), RDF/S, SPARQL \& RIF, Conceptual Graphs (CGs), Formal Concept Analysis (FCA), Euler Diagrams, CP-Nets, GAI-Nets, etc.) from a theoretical and application viewpoint. The papers will be judged from two perspectives: technical and application. Technical results will include graph theory based results for novel structures for representation, extensions of existing structures for added expressivity, conciseness, optimisation algorithms for reasoning, reasoning explanation mechanisms etc. Papers reporting on application experience will be expected to demonstrate the benefits of the proposed solutions. Current information systems, however, show as a particular point of failure the vagueness between user search terms and the knowledge orders of the information space in question. Studies in interactive information seeking behavior have confirmed that the ability to browse an information space and observe similarities and dissimilarities between information objects is crucial for accidental encountering and the creative use of information. This is in particular true for heterogeneous information spaces within the open web. Some kind of guided searching therefore becomes more and more important in order to precisely discover information without knowing the right search terms. Knowledge mapping encompasses all attempts to use visualizations to gain insights into the structure and evolution of large-scale information spaces. Knowledge maps can take the form of network visualizations, heat maps, tree maps or specific, map like arrangements of search results. However, most maps are static visualizations made for special purposes, and usually neither interactive nor dynamic. Moreover, not much of the experiences made in knowledge mapping have ever been implemented in online interfaces to digital libraries and collections, nor is there a stable and continuous knowledge exchange between the “map makers” on the one hand and the Information Retrieval (IR) specialists on the other hand. Thus, knowledge maps of digital library collections are promising navigation tools through knowledge spaces but still far away from being applicable for searching - due to a lack of models that properly combine insights of the two strands. We have several research fellowships available for researchers for a minimum of 12 and a maximum of 20 months. If you're interested, BioVis has two exciting challenges for you to compete in, win prizes, get published, and help move research forward. This year's BioVis contests center around the properties of Ribonucleic Acid (RNA). RNA is commonly thought of as the biological carbon-copy used to carry information from the genome to the protein machinery of life. But, in addition to simply being a symbolic transcription language for the genome, RNA also performs important functions and carries other messages in properties such as its structure. This year's BioVis *Design* challenge poses the question of how to best represent RNA structure, and potentially the panoply of structures that an RNA molecule can form, with the goal of helping researchers understand the similarities and differences between different RNA molecules. This year's BioVis *Data Analysis* challenge takes things one step further, and asks whether you can figure out the structural, or other physical properties of different RNA molecules that predispose some individuals towards disease, and others towards health. If you've got a good idea for the Design challenge, you can test its real-world application in the Data Analysis challenge, and maybe even solve a pressing health question regarding epilepsy!
