Copyright 2015 Visualization has become a valuable means for data exploration and analysis. Interactive visualization combines expressive graphical representations and effective user interaction. Although interaction is an important component of visualization approaches, much of the visualization literature tends to pay more attention to the graphical representation than to interaction. The goal of this work is to strengthen the interaction side of visualization. Based on a brief review of general aspects of interaction, we develop an interaction-oriented view on visualization. This view comprises five key aspects: the data, the tasks, the technology, the human, as well as the implementation. Picking up these aspects individually, we elaborate several interaction methods for visualization. We introduce a multi-threading architecture for efficient interactive exploration. We present interaction techniques for different types of data e.g., multivariate data, spatio-temporal data, graphs) and different visualization tasks (e.g., exploratory navigation, visual comparison, visual editing). With respect to technology, we illustrate approaches that utilize modern interaction modalities (e.g., touch, tangibles, proxemics) as well as classic ones. While the human is important throughout this work, we also consider automatic methods to assist the interactive part. In addition to solutions for individual problems, a major contribution of this work is the overarching view of interaction in visualization as a whole. This includes a critical discussion of interaction, the identification of links between the key aspects of interaction, and the formulation of research topics for future work with a focus on interaction. Call for Posters of IEEE LDAV with extended deadlines The 5th IEEE Symposium on Large Data Analysis and Visualization will be held in conjunction with IEEE Vis 2015 in Chicago, Illinois on October 25-26, 2015. Abstract submission deadline: August 24th, 2015 Call for Posters: We invite you to submit unpublished work to the IEEE LDAV 2015 Poster Program. The poster program is a venue designed to highlight ongoing research and late breaking topics that have produced promising preliminary results. In addition to the topics listed under Call for Papers, we also welcome submissions that showcase successful stories of applying visualization to large-scale data intensive applications. The poster program will be a great opportunity for the authors to interact with the symposium attendees and solicit feedback. Interested authors should submit a two-page abstract that describes the underlying problem, the proposed method, and preliminary results. Accepted poster abstracts will be included in the symposium proceedings. The format of the abstract will be the same as the format used for the regular paper submission. Poster authors are encouraged, but not required, to include a draft or sketch of the poster layout and content in their submission. This would help reviewers and show that the poster format is used effectively. The draft poster should be in PDF format. The authors should indicate if the poster would be accompanied by an on-site demonstration and/or videos. Call for Papers Rapid growth in data volume and velocity has driven a revolution in computational infrastructure and processing capabilities, but how does this change the way humans work in this new Big Data environment? Human-centered computing focuses on technologies that enhance the human's abilities to perceive, understand, and collaborate. There are many significant challenges for combined human/technology systems that emerge from the dramatic changes in the nature of the technology that humans use to harness Big Data. The purpose of this workshop is to gather experts in multi-disciplinary fields and discuss research at the intersection of humans and Big Data. This second workshop on Human-Centered Big Data Research (HCBDR) marks a continuing interest for research that aims to understand how people solve problems and make decisions in the face of magnitudes more information, analyze how tools can help us bridge the gap between Big Data and knowledge acquisition, and evaluate how different aspects of Big Data (e.g., volume, velocity, veracity, and variety) impact a user's sensemaking strategies and performance. HCBDR 2015 will be a one day workshop at the 2015 IEEE International Conference on Big Data (IEEE BigData 2015) in Santa Clara, CA, USA on Oct 29 - Nov 1, 2015. As our sensors become more sophisticated and our world becomes more online, it is important to understand how humans can interact with stream data processing systems to make sense of dynamic phenomena in near-real-time. In this talk, Dr. Greaves will discuss some ongoing research in the interaction between humans and streams of data, parallels with exploratory data analysis, useful formalisms, and the relation to work on social machines. Mark Greaves is currently Technical Director for Analytics in the National Security Directorate of the US Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory<http://www.pnnl.gov/>, providing scientific, programmatic, and business development leadership. ****************************************************************************** 12th IEEE Symposium on Visualization for Cyber Security (VizSec) *** Deadline Extended *** New deadline is August 6, 2015 vizsec.org ****************************************************************************** The 12th IEEE Symposium on Visualization for Cyber Security (VizSec) is a forum that brings together researchers and practitioners from academia, government, and industry to address the needs of the cyber security community through new and insightful visualization and analysis techniques. VizSec provides an excellent venue for fostering greater exchange and new collaborations on a broad range of security- and privacy-related topics. VizSec will be held in Chicago, Illinois, USA in conjunction with IEEE VIS. The purpose of VizSec is to explore effective and scalable visual interfaces for security domains such as network security, computer forensics, reverse engineering, insider threat detection, cryptography, privacy, user assisted attacks prevention, compliance management, wireless security, secure coding, and penetration testing. Technical Papers ---------------- Full papers describing novel contributions in security visualization are solicited. Papers may present techniques, applications, practical experience, theory, analysis, experiments, or evaluations. We encourage the submission of papers on technologies and methods that promise to improve cyber security practices, including, but not limited to: - Situation awareness and/or understanding - Incident handling including triage, exploration, correlation, and response - Computer forensics - Recording and reporting results of investigations - Assisting proactive security configuration and deployment - Reverse engineering and malware analysis - Vulnerability management - Multiple data source analysis - Analyzing information requirements for computer network defense - Evaluation and/or user testing of VizSec systems - Criteria for assessing the effectiveness of cyber security visualizations (whether from a security goal perspective or a human factors perspective) - Modeling system and network behavior - Modeling attacker and defender behavior - Studying risk and impact of cyber attacks - Predicting future attacks or targets - Security metrics and education - Software security - Mobile application security - Social networking privacy and security When applicable, visualization and interaction techniques that effectively capture the insights of human analysts and/or allow analysts to collaborate efficiently are particularly desirable. Posters ------- Poster submissions may showcase late-breaking results, work in progress, preliminary results, or visual representations relevant to the VizSec community. The poster program will be a great opportunity for the authors to interact with the attendees and solicit feedback. Accepted poster abstracts will be made available on this website. Tests and Evaluation -------------------- When applicable, submissions including tests and evaluations of the proposed tools and techniques are considered particularly desirable. If possible, making the data used for the tests available will also be considered positively. If you do not have real-world data to demonstrate your visualization, you may be interested in looking at the VAST Challenge data sets. Submissions ----------- The VizSec 2015 proceedings will be published by IEEE. Submissions must be formated using the IEEE VGTC template that can be found at http://junctionpublishing.org/vgtc/Tasks/camera.html. Papers should be at most 8 pages including the bibliography and appendices. Committee members are not required to read the appendices or any pages past the maximum. Submissions not meeting these guidelines will be rejected without consideration of their merit. Reviews are single-blind, so authors may include names and affiliations in their submissions. Submitted papers must not substantially overlap papers that have been published or that are simultaneously submitted to a journal or a conference with proceedings. We have a new deadline of August 14, but will give priority and early decisions to papers submitted by the original deadline of August 3. EGAS 2015 will explore the technical challenges and technology development opportunities of graph visual analytics found in the big data era with the goal of solving big problems with big graph data. We invite researchers and practitioners to participate at IEEE EGAS 2015 by submitting technical or position papers and, if accepted, presenting their ideas at the workshop co-located at IEEE VIS 2015.
