This study was commissioned by CISE’s Division of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure (ACI) in 2013 to examine priorities and trade-offs for advanced computing in support of NSF-supported science and engineering research. An interim report was published in Fall 2014 identifying key issues and catalyzing input from the community. The final report, which was issued in late April, considered contributions from multiple stakeholders, including more than 60 submitted comments from individuals, research groups, and organizations. The recommendations within the report aim to: (1) position the United States for continued leadership in science and engineering; (2) ensure that computing resources meet community needs; (3) aid the scientific community in keeping up with the revolution in computing, and (4) sustain the infrastructure for advanced computing. We are enthusiastic about the study’s helpful observations and recommendations. The timing of the report is excellent, syncing with planning for NSF’s future research cyberinfrastructure (CI) investments. It also nicely complements the National Strategic Computing Initiative (NSCI)<https://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2015/07/29/executive-order-crea…> that was announced last summer and some of our internal planning with respect to data infrastructure as the NSF-wide Cyberinfrastructure for 21st-Century Science, Engineering, and Education (CIF21) effort transitions. My apologies for any cross postings --- *Exploratory Search and Interactive Data Analytics (ESIDA)* Limassol, Cyprus, March 13, 2017 https://sites.google.com/site/esida2017/ Hosted by IUI 2017, March 13-16, 2017 http://iui.acm.org/2017/ *Workshop Topic and Description* In recent years, retrieval techniques operating on text or semantic annotations, have become the industry standard for retrieval from large data collections, such as documents, images, videos, music, medical data. This approach works well with sufficient high-quality meta-data or tagging. However, with the explosive growth of big data collections, it has become apparent that tagging new data quickly and efficiently is not always possible. Secondly, even if instantaneous high quality data tagging were possible, there would still be many instances, where search by keyword query is problematic. For example, in the case of image retrieval it might be easier for a user to define their query if they are looking for an image of a cat, but how would they specify that the cat should be of a particular shade of ginger with sad looking eyes? A solution to these problems is active engagement of the user in the information retrieval loop, thus enabling the user to not only explore a given dataset more easily but also gradually direct their search to a more specific area of the search space. The aim of this workshop is to explore new methods and interface/system design for interactive data analytics and management in various domains, including specialised text collections (e.g. legal, medical, scientific), multimedia, and bioinformatics, as well as for various tasks, such as semantic information retrieval, conceptual organization and clustering of data collections for sense making, semantic expert profiling, and document/multimedia recommender systems. The primary audience of the workshop are researchers and practitioners in the area of interactive and personalised system design as well as interactive machine learning both from academia and industry. IUI, with its focus on the intersection of HCI and AI, is a perfect venue where researchers from system/interface design community and the machine learning community can meet. *Workshop Target Areas* The workshop aims to solicit submissions in all areas of interactive data analytics and exploratory search including: - design, testing and assessment of interactive systems for data analytics - interactive data visualisation for exploratory and investigative analysis - interactive classification and clustering of data - user assisted curation and validation of the analysis process, and generation of data visualisations - user engagement in the semantic analysis process via suitable annotation and correction tools - study of the trade-off between accuracy of the results and user effort - personalisation and user modelling related to interactive system design Submissions aimed at solving practical problems in specific application domains are especially welcome, including: - digital libraries - legal document management - personalized online learning systems - news media - biomedical data - multimedia collections - specialised image and video collections, e.g. medical images. Clemson University invites undergraduates from all disciplines to apply for a paid 8 weeks summer REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) program in Visualization. The analysis of human behaviors has impacted many domains, ranging from business, health, security, to education and disaster management. For example, marketers analyze website traffic data for behavioral insights to identify potential marketing targets, while healthcare providers augment clinical data with patients' social networking behavior to improve health plans and clinical outcomes. While many statistical techniques have been developed, people often find them insufficient to provide behavioral insights, especially into how individuals or crowds will behave and why, because behavioral context is missing from most statistical analyses. Interactive visual analytic systems that couple interaction design with data analysis, and show analytic results with behavioral context have provided new ways to overcome the challenge. This special issue aims at featuring recent progress and new results in this emerging area. *Scope, Description, and More Information* This special issue invites submissions featuring original research relating to interactive visual analysis of human and crowd behavior. A suitable submission must also demonstrate its relevance to the TiiS journal by exhibiting the two defining characteristics of an interactive intelligent system: intelligence and interactivity. 1st ADA Media Art Online Exhibition launched: CODeDOC Remediated curated by Christiane PAUL www.digitalartarchive.at ADA is pleased to announce the launch of its first online exhibition, which lets users ‘re-experience’ two exhibitions on Net Art, and uses a diverse set of documentation media. On display are two outstanding exhibitions from the early 2000s – CODEDOC (Whitney Museum, 2002) and CODEDOC II (Ars Electronica, 2003), which explored the relationship between frontend and backend in Digital Art Works. Participating Artists are Ed BURTON, Mark NAPIER, Mary FLANAGAN, EpidemiC, Camille UTTERBACK, Scott SNIBBE, Joan LEANDRE, Martin WATTENBERG, Alexander R. GALLOWAY, Maciej WISNIEWSKI, Bradford PALEY, Golan LEVIN, et. al. In the curatorial process, we were faced with two challenges: 1. How to document and disseminate the variable and differing interfaces and stages of the art work? 2. How to deal with technical obsolescence? Since most digital artworks cannot be viewed by every user due to outdated software or browser settings, the aim was to document artworks in all of their complexity - allowing every user a comprehensive insight into them. We developed a 'Grid of Analysis', in which several documentation media –from keywords, technology, texts to videos- can be viewed simultaneously. This not only ensures documentation as encompassing as possible, but is meant to display the most important aesthetics and subjects of Digital Art such as interactivity, sequentiality and narration. Links to the original art works can be accessed, while media such as our video narratives document and showcase the artworks. You can enter the exhibition at the bottom of ADA’s front page. In the introduction slide, you will find a text collection available for download and information on technical requirements. Then you can browse through the art works slide by slide, search through the documentation and try out the links to the original art works from CODeDOC and CODeDOC II – remediated for your re-experience!
