The need and the opportunity to utilize the information in such networks better has raised a range of new research questions, such as, what constitutes an insightful visualization of a big network, how to visualize a big network efficiently without loss of information, how to scale-up existing graph drawing methods for dealing with huge datasets, etc. This workshop aims at bringing together the leading researchers in this field and showcase the latest results in big network visual analytics. Oct 3-5 at the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Nov 25-30 at the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Investigators conducting research on medical image perception know that it can be difficult to attract radiologists or other experts to participate as experimental observers. For the last two years support from the NIH National Cancer Institute (NCI) has funded the Perception Lab in the Learning Center of the RSNA annual meeting in Chicago. Last year, fourteen labs tested over 200 radiologists. We are happy to announce Year 3 of the Perception Lab will run from: Nov. 25th to Nov. 30th at RSNA in the McCormick Place in Chicago. NEW in 2018: In addition, if we get NCI funding, this year a similar opportunity will be available at the ASCP Annual Meeting, Oct 3rd – 5th at the Baltimore Convention Center. At the RSNA Perception Lab, you can test radiologists and others on relatively brief experiments (~30 minutes maximum). The annual RSNA meeting provides an unparalleled pool of potential participants: attendance is upwards of 50,000, including ~25,000 professionals in some aspect of radiology. The ASCP Perception Lab is a new venture that will run on the same principle. Here you will be able to recruit observers from among the approximately 2,000 pathologists, residents, and lab professionals in attendance. We are inviting applications for investigators to participate in either lab…or both. Facilities: There will be six small, darkened testing areas. At RSNA, each will be equipped with a desk, two chairs, two 47-inch monitors (Samsung LN-T4665F, color with VGA and HDMI, 1920 x 1080 pixels), power, and internet access. At ASCP, there will be a single monitor. There will be a registration/waiting area. RSNA and ASCP will provide some help in recruiting observers and with general publicity. In addition, registration fees for the meeting will be waived for participating researchers. Individual researchers will need to provide any equipment other than the monitors described above (e.g., if you need medical grade monitors, computers, eye-trackers, you need to make arrangements). You will also need to provide personnel to carry out the experiment. Finally, investigators will be asked to contribute a modest amount to a fund that will allow us to run a participant lottery (an Amazon gift card did well last year). This residency offers an opportunity for the selected project to influence the way that people look at the university’s role in supporting data visualization and digital art, similar to the manner that the Hunt Library has started to change the way that people think about academic libraries in the 21st century. Libraries have long been places where people have explored new ways of interacting with information and data. The NCSU Libraries’ Code+Art program <http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/projects/codeart> continues this tradition by bringing an aesthetic eye to the increasing role of data in our lives by combining creative and computational thinking in a library’s physical spaces. Code+Art provides the lens that focuses this residency program. Program Details The resident will produce a large-scale work of digital art or visualization. Creations could include generative art or dynamic, data-driven visualizations of high aesthetic quality. The data underlying the piece may or may not be literally interpretable, depending on the resident’s scholarly approach. To generate broader impact and a larger audience, the work will: - Be open source - Follow principles of responsive design - Follow principles of universal design - Be documented using principles of literate computing - Be broadly distributed to other libraries and learning spaces with similar visualization facilities Additionally, the work should be scholarly output that is citable and impactful. NCSU Libraries staff and collaborators will explore with the resident innovative approaches to peer review, sharing, and credit for the work created during the residency. To further support the resident, the library will hire a student worker to assist the resident with content production. The resident can specify the student’s title and skill set. If additional technology skills are needed beyond what the student employee can provide, the residency stipend may be used to hire technical help. The residency includes a stipend of $25,000 that can be used to cover housing, travel, and other expenses incurred by the project. Women and historically underrepresented communities are especially encouraged to apply. Support and Community Engagement The resident will work closely with NCSU Libraries staff, who will facilitate engagement with the NC State community and the broader scholarly community. Libraries staff have expertise in visualization <http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/do/visualization>, making <http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/services/makerspace>, data management <http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/do/data-management>, and other areas of research support <http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/services/researcher-support>, and will be available to the resident for consultation. The resident will be expected to engage with the NC State community through a talk and/or workshop, to be determined and facilitated with Libraries staff. NC State University <https://www.ncsu.edu/about/> is a pre-eminent research enterprise that excels in science, technology, engineering, math, design, the humanities and social sciences, textiles, and veterinary medicine. Collaborations with NC State researchers and students will grow from the vision and needs of the resident, and can be facilitated by Libraries staff, who maintain deep relationships with the campus community. This residency is funded as part of a larger, “Immersive Scholar” grant. Immersive Scholar is a three-year effort funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to develop extensible models and programs for the creation and sharing of digital scholarship in large-scale and immersive visualization environments. Tutorials offer the community an opportunity to learn about the state-of-the-art concepts and techniques and allow the presenters to share their expertise. Tutorials on interdisciplinary areas, novel or fast growing directions, and significant practical applications are also encouraged. Sorry if you have received multiple copies of this email. =========================================================================== Call for Posters GD 2018 26th International Symposium on Graph Drawing and Network Visualization September 26-28, 2018 - Barcelona, Spain http://dccg.upc.edu/gd2018/ =========================================================================== Graph Drawing is concerned with the geometric representation of graphs and constitutes the algorithmic core of Network Visualization. Graph Drawing and Network Visualization are motivated by applications where it is crucial to visually analyze and interact with relational datasets. Examples of such application areas include data science, social sciences, web computing, information systems, biology, geography, business intelligence, information security, or software engineering. GD has been the main annual event in this area for more than 20 years. Its focus is on combinatorial and algorithmic aspects of graph drawing as well as the design of network visualization systems and interfaces. GD 2018 will take place September 26-28, 2018 at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain. Researchers and practitioners working on any aspects of graph drawing and network visualization are invited to contribute posters and to participate in the symposium and the graph drawing contest. POSTER SUBMISSION INFORMATION ----------------------------- The submission of posters on graph drawing, network visualization, and related areas is solicited. The poster session will provide a forum for the communication of late-breaking research results (which may also appear elsewhere) to the GD community. Authors of posters should prepare an abstract (up to two pages in unmodified LNCS style---no times package is allowed) that must be submitted together with the poster. Abstracts of accepted posters will appear in the conference proceedings (two pages). The maximum size for a poster is A0 (84.1 cm x 118.9 cm). The posters must be in portrait mode. Each submission will then consist of two pdf files (the two-page abstract and the poster) and must include names, email addresses and contact information of the contributors. *** ACM IUI 2019: Call for Papers *** Los Angeles, CA, USA March 17-20, 2019 http://iui.acm.org/2019/ ACM IUI 2019 is the 24rd annual meeting of the intelligent interfaces community and serves as a premier international forum for reporting outstanding research and development on intelligent user interfaces. ACM IUI is where the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community meets the Artificial Intelligence (AI) community, with contributions from related fields such as psychology, behavioral science, cognitive science, computer graphics, design, the arts, and more. Our focus is to improve the interaction between humans and machines, by leveraging both HCI approaches and state-of-the art AI techniques from machine learning, natural language processing, data mining, knowledge representation and reasoning. ACM IUI welcomes contribution from all relevant arenas: academia, industry, government, and non-profit organizations. Along with 25 other topics in AI & HCI, this year we especially encourage submissions on explainable intelligent user interfaces for IUI 2019. ** Why you should submit to ACM IUI ** At ACM IUI, we focus on the interaction between machine intelligence and human intelligence. We do not require evaluations with users, but we do expect papers to include an appropriate evaluation for their stated contributions. Accepted papers will appear in the ACM Digital Library and citation indices. A selected set of accepted top quality full papers will be invited to submit their extended versions for publication in an ACM Transactions on Interactive Intelligent Systems (TiiS, http://tiis.acm.org) special issue titled "Highlights of IUI 2019". ** Submission Guidelines ** - Full paper (anonymized 10 pages, references do not count toward the page limit) should make substantial, novel, and relevant contribution to the field. - Short paper (anonymized 4 pages, references do not count toward the page limit) is a much more focused and succinct contribution to the field. Short papers are not expected to include a discussion of related work that is as broad and complete as that of Full papers. - Anonymization: ACM IUI uses a double-blind review process. All submissions must be appropriately anonymized according to the following guidelines: -- Author's names and affiliations are not visible anywhere in the paper. -- Acknowledgements should be anonymized or removed during the review process. -- Self-citations should be included where necessary, but must use the third person. The University of Calgary is hiring again for an Assistant Professor position in our new Data Science program ( http://careers.ucalgary.ca/jobs/2849531-assistant-professor-data-science-de…) The hire is part of our move to build out new undergraduate and graduate Data Science programs and expand our research capacity, all with a big emphasis on visualization. New hires would have a chance to collaborate with visualization faculty in the Interactions Lab ( http://ilab.cpsc.ucalgary.ca) and play a big role in helping craft these new programs.
