We are looking for an outstanding female computer scientist with a research focus in the field of Visual Computing, for example Computer Graphics, Computer Vision, Visualization and Virtual/Augmented Reality. Requirements A relevant national or international university education with a completed doctoral/PhD degree. Expected Qualifications Outstanding achievements and potential in research, excellent publication activity, and international reputation. International experience in the form of a PhD or PostDoc position at an internationally recognized university or research center. Experience in the design and implementation of international research projects as well as willingness and ability to establish and lead a research group. Enthusiasm for excellent teaching, teaching experience or a teaching concept as well as the ability and willingness to teach in all curricular stages (Bachelor, Master, Doctorate), supervise theses and promote young scientists. To ensure effective international representation of the research group and its work, excellent spoken and written competence in English is required. Specifically, willingness to teach courses in English is expected. Fluency in German or the willingness to acquire it is also required. We welcome you to the 2019 ACM International Conference on Interactive Surfaces and Spaces (ISS 2019), taking place from November 10th to 13th in Daejeon, South Korea. Interactive surfaces and spaces have become increasingly prevalent, appearing in various sizes, shapes, and application contexts, which enables and requires novel forms of interaction going beyond the traditional WIMP paradigm. ACM ISS is the premier venue for sharing research on topics such as large-scale interactive displays, touch/gesture/whole-body and multimodal interaction, tabletop computing, 3D and spatial user interfaces, media facades, interactive architecture, interactive 3D spaces (mixed reality and augmented reality), and many others that lie within the overarching theme of interactive surfaces and spaces. DATA VISUALIZATION CAREERS PROJECT

Dear Colleagues, I hope this email finds you doing well and having a productive semester. This semester I am teaching a new class, Topics in Data Visualization, to students who are participating in a campus wide Data Mine Initiative here at Purdue. Students are from various majors, but are interested in data visualization. The class meets once a week. Some of the students have not chosen a major yet, so I see this as an opportunity to encourage them to consider majoring in Data Visualization (my department offers an undergraduate degree in data visualization) and for those who have already chosen a major to become more knowledgeable about data visualization careers. One of the assignments is to identify and interview someone in the data visualization field and/or someone who's job/career requires data visualization skills or data visualization is a key component of their duties. I see this as a great opportunity for students from a broad array of backgrounds to connect with persons in the data visualization field who could provide some insight on their work experience, the benefits and value of data visualization in today's data driven world. I am writing to see if there are any persons on this list (or know of someone in the field) willing to give a student 10 minutes of their time for a one-on-one interview to ask you about your job. The questions will be predetermined and made available before the interview. The interview will be scheduled at a time that is most convenient for you. I have reached out to a number of colleagues from a broad range of disciplines so that students will have a diverse pool to choose from. I would like to ensure the pool is diverse in terms of occupation, discipline and gender. Students are working to complete interviews by October 10, 2019. We briefly discuss these categories below. Although your main paper type has to be specified during the paper submission process, papers can include elements of more than one of these categories. Please see “Process and Pitfalls in Writing Information Visualization Research Papers” by Tamara Munzner for a more detailed discussion. *Technique papers* introduce novel techniques or algorithms that have not previously appeared in the literature, or that significantly extend known techniques or algorithms, for example, by scaling to datasets of much larger size than before or by generalizing a technique to a larger class of uses. The technique or algorithm description provided in the paper should be complete enough that a competent graduate student in visualization could implement the work, and the authors should create a prototype implementation of the methods. Relevant previous work must be referenced, and the advantage of the new methods over it should be clearly demonstrated. There should be a discussion of the tasks and datasets for which this new method is appropriate, and its limitations. Evaluation through informal or formal user studies, or other methods, will often serve to strengthen the paper, but are not mandatory. *System papers* present a blend of algorithms, technical requirements, user requirements, and design that solves a major problem. The system that is described is both novel and important, and has been implemented. The rationale for significant design decisions is provided, and the system is compared to documented, best-of-breed systems already in use. The comparison includes a specific discussion of how the described system differs from and is, in some significant respects, superior to those systems. For example, the described system may offer substantial advancements in the performance or usability of visualization systems, or novel capabilities. Every effort should be made to eliminate external factors (such as advances in processor performance, memory sizes or operating system features) that would affect this comparison. *Application/design study papers* explore the choices made when applying visualization and visual analytics techniques in an application area, for example relating the visual encodings and interaction techniques to the requirements of the target task. Similarly, application/design study papers have been the norm when researchers describe the use of visualization techniques to glean insights from problems in engineering and science. Although a significant amount of application domain background information can be useful to provide a framing context in which to discuss the specifics of the target task, the primary focus of the case study must be the visualization content. The results of the application/design study, including insights generated in the application domain, should be clearly conveyed. Describing new techniques and algorithms developed to solve the target problem will strengthen a design study paper, but the requirements for novelty are less stringent than in a technique paper. Where necessary, the identification of the underlying parametric space and its efficient search must be aptly described. The work will be judged by the design lessons learned or insights gleaned, on which future contributors can build. We invite submissions on any application area. *Evaluation papers* explore the usage of visualization and visual analytics by human users, and typically present an empirical study of visualization techniques or systems. Authors are not necessarily expected to implement the systems used in these studies themselves; the research contribution will be judged on the validity and importance of the experimental results as opposed to the novelty of the systems or techniques under study. The conference committee appreciates the difficulty and importance of designing and performing rigorous experiments, including the definition of appropriate hypotheses, tasks, data sets, selection of subjects, measurement, validation and conclusions. The goal of such efforts should be to move from mere description of experiments, toward prediction and explanation. We do suggest that potential authors who have not had formal training in the design of experiments involving human subjects may wish to partner with a colleague from an area such as psychology or human-computer interaction who has experience with designing rigorous experimental protocols and statistical analysis of the resulting data. Other novel forms of evaluation are also encouraged. *Theory/model papers* present new interpretations of the foundational theory of visualization and visual analytics. Implementations are usually not relevant for papers in this category. Papers should focus on basic advancement in our understanding of how visualization techniques complement and exploit properties of human vision and cognition. Best regards, Eurovis STAR Chairs Steffen Oeltze-Jafra, University of Magdeburg, Germany Noeska Smit, University of Bergen, Norway Bei Wang, University of Utah, USA *** Eurovis Call for STARS State-of-the-Art Reports (STARs) are intended to provide up-to-date and comprehensive surveys on topics of interest to the visualization research community. We encourage the submission of STARs on topics that have not yet been covered in any recent STAR or other survey [1,2]. We welcome submissions that introduce emerging technologies, as well as proposals on more traditional visualization topics. We also welcome contributions from related disciplines and application areas demonstrating contributions to, or benefits from, the area of visualization including, but not limited to, visual computing, computer graphics, human-computer interaction, virtual reality, image processing, computer vision, psychology, geography, chemistry, computational fluid dynamics, data analysis, computational sciences, medicine, biology, economy, social science, etc. Like last year, all accepted Eurovis STAR reports will be published in Computer Graphics Forum. *** Important Dates October 7, 2019 Submission of STAR sketch (two pages, +references, +bibliography) October 28, 2019 Invitation for full STAR submission January 25, 2020 Submission of full STAR March 9, 2020 Review notification April 16, 2020 Second round submission April 30, 2020 Second review notification May 7, 2020 Camera ready version * All deadlines are at 23:59 UTC *** Instructions As part of the acceptance process into Computer Graphics Forum, STARs will undergo a multi-stage process. Electronic submission of the STAR sketch and full proposal is mandatory and will be conducted using the Precision Conference System. We plan to schedule each STAR as an approximately 45 minute presentation (subject to the schedule management of the Eurovis 2020 program). In any circumstance, a STAR presentation will be given a longer time slot than that of a full paper. Any accepted STARs are required to have at least one (paid) registered author to attend and present the STAR at the conference. *** STAR Sketch Submission First, authors are asked to submit an initial sketch by October 7, 2019. A STAR sketch briefly describes the planned STAR by outlining the topic, discussing its relevance to the visualization community, providing the planned structure and outline of the STAR together with all key references, and short biographies of the authors. The length of a STAR sketch main text is limited to two pages. To demonstrate the relevant expertise needed to produce the proposed STAR, authors are required to submit brief biographies of all authors as supplementary material. References and short biographies are considered supplementary pages and are not counted within the two page limit. STAR sketches will be reviewed by the STAR IPC and comments on suitability and relevance will be provided on October 28, 2019. *** Full STAR Submission In the next stage, authors are required to submit a full STAR. Full STAR submissions will then undergo a single blind, two-stage review process, similar to that of regular papers submitted to Computer Graphics Forum, where 3-4 external experts on the respective topic will evaluate the STAR.
