We plan to keep all the important dates of the conference as announced. ================================================ Graph Drawing is concerned with the geometric representation of graphs and constitutes the algorithmic core of Network Visualization. Graph Drawing and Network Visualization are motivated by applications where it is crucial to visually analyze and interact with relational datasets. Examples of such application areas include data science, social sciences, web computing, information systems, biology, geography, business intelligence, information security, and software engineering. GD has been the main annual event in this area for more than 25 years. Its focus is on combinatorial and algorithmic aspects of graph drawing as well as the design of network visualization systems and interfaces. GD 2020 will take place September 15-18, 2020, at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. Researchers and practitioners working on any aspects of graph drawing and network visualization are invited to contribute papers and posters, and to participate in the symposium and the graph drawing contest. PAPERS ------ We invite authors to submit papers describing original research of theoretical or practical significance to graph drawing and network visualization. Regular papers must be submitted explicitly to one of two distinct tracks described below. Papers submitted to one track will not compete with papers submitted to the other track. Track 1: Combinatorial and algorithmic aspects ---------------------------------------------- This track is mainly devoted to fundamental graph drawing advances, such as combinatorial aspects and algorithm design. The range of topics for this track includes (but is not limited to): • Design and analysis of graph drawing algorithms • Geometric and topological graph theory • Computational topology of graphs on surfaces • Geometric network design and optimization • Geometric computing Track 2: Experimental, applied, and network visualization aspects ---------------------------------------------- This track is mainly devoted to the practical aspects of graph drawing, such as the development of network visualization systems and interfaces in different application areas. The range of topics for this track includes (but is not limited to): • Visualization of graphs and networks in real world applications, including big data analysis • Engineering of network visualization algorithms and systems • Experimental results in graph theory and algorithms • Benchmarks and experimental studies of network visualization systems and user interfaces • Cognitive studies on graph drawing readability and user interaction • Interfaces and methods for interacting with graphs Authors of applied papers will have the opportunity to show a demo of their software/system during the conference. SHORT PAPERS ------------ In addition to the above two tracks, there will be a separate category for short papers, describing theoretical or applied contributions of shorter length. Papers in this category will be assigned a shorter time for presentation during the conference. SUBMISSION FORMAT ----------------- All submissions must be formatted using the LaTeX style file for the conference series Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) provided by Springer. The default margins and fonts must not be modified; in particular, the use of packages such as times.sty is not allowed. Submissions that do not comply with this format risk rejection without consideration of their merits. To promote inclusion of more figures in the submitted papers, submission will have a strict number of lines limit and the possibility to have one page more compared to previous years. REGULAR PAPERS HAVE AT MOST 400 lines (excluding references and figures) AND AT MOST 13 PAGES (excluding references). Short papers have at most 200 lines (excluding references and figures) AND at most 7 pages (excluding references). The claims of the paper should be fully substantiated. If this information does not fit within the page limits, the authors should include it in a clearly marked appendix, whose length is not constrained and which the reviewers may read at their own discretion. All submissions will be handled through EasyChair at the web site : https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=gd2020 POSTERS & CONTEST ----------------- Submissions of posters on graph drawing, network visualization, and related areas are solicited. The poster session will provide a forum for the communication of late-breaking research results (which may also appear elsewhere) to the GD community. Authors of posters should prepare an abstract (up to 2 pages in the LNCS style) that must be submitted together with the poster itself. Details about the traditional Graph Drawing Contest held at the conference are provided on the conference web site. PUBLICATION ----------- All accepted papers (including the two-page poster abstracts) will appear in the conference proceedings, published by Springer in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series. The LNCS proceedings will be made freely accessible to the GD community upon publication and openly accessible to anyone after four years. Authors will be required to submit their accepted papers to the arXiv repository, in order to provide immediate and unrestricted open access to them. The self-archived arXiv papers shall consist of the LNCS proceedings version (identical, except for possibly changed references to the appendix resp. the arXiv version) plus an optional clearly marked appendix. Subsequent submissions of revised versions of the paper to the arXiv (known as arXiv ``replacements’’) are allowed. Failure to comply with these guidelines will impede the publication of the paper. Each paper or poster must be presented at the conference by an author (barring unforeseen circumstances), otherwise the paper will not be included in the proceedings. Should any visa restriction prevent an author from attending the conference and presenting a paper, he/she will be given ways to participate and give the talk via electronic means. Selected papers from both tracks will be invited for submission to a special issue of the Journal of Graph Algorithms and Applications (JGAA). Many of these systems have been incorporating machine learning (ML) models and algorithms to introduce some level of automation to the analytical process. However, within this relationship, there are a number of aspects that can impact the effectiveness of the human-machine teaming, including 1) people's domain and system expertise; 2) human biases, including cognitive and perceptual biases; 3) trust in ML models and visual representation of data. Expertise, bias, and trust are intrinsically intertwined. Additionally, visual analytics systems are used in different fields and by people from various backgrounds, with different levels of domain expertise and experience with machine learning and visual analytics tools. This variety of experience and domain expertise among human users has opened the door for new research directions and challenges in the fields of visual analytics and machine learning. Designers who fail to consider the aforementioned diversities might introduce problems to the analysis effectiveness and user experience. Furthermore, experience and domain expertise might affect user trust in visual analytics tools; although, how and why they affect trust is still an open question. Trust will eventually affect how much the users would rely on and use the tool. While users will take advantage of their prior experiences to make better decisions with the assistance of analytic support, they might carry many cognitive biases that can negatively influence their decision-making or analysis process. Recent research shows trust in and reliance on the visual analytics systems/tools as well as user strategies and biases can be directly influenced by domain and system expertise (or lack of expertise). The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners from different disciplines to discuss and discover challenges in ML supported visual analytics tools and set the stage for future research directions and collaborations regarding these issues by proposing design guidelines, empirical findings, and VA techniques. Topics of Interest The workshop suggested topics are as followed: 1. Trust considerations based on different areas of domain expertise (e.g., medical, security, scientific, financial domains). 2. Trust and bias considerations based on different levels of user familiarity with machine learning and visual analytics systems. 3. Detecting and preventing cognitive biases in visual analytics and machine learning for users. 4. User trust in machine learning models and visual explanations of model decisions in visual analytics systems. 5. The correlation between trust, domain knowledge, and potential cognitive biases. 6. The relationship between domain expertise and trust with model transparency, human interpretability, and model understandability in visual data analysis. 7. The relationship between model interpretability, domain expertise, and trust. Contribution Types We are looking for and open to diverse forms of research (as listed below) within the realm of VA and ML with appropriate emphasis and relation to human trust, expertise, and cognitive factors. We encourage submissions of research involving: 1. Human empirical research/findings 2. Design guidelines and surveys 3. Technique papers 4. Position papers 5. Case studies Submission Format The workshop will accept papers with 2 to 6 pages in length, plus 1 page of references. All submissions must be in the IEEE VGTC Conference Style Template format. We also encourage authors to submit a short 30-second video of their work when submitting their work, if applicable. For the camera-ready deadline, all the poster submissions must prepare a 30-second video for the poster fast-forward session. These videos might have audio for archival purposes, but the authors will only use the video as a visual tool while presenting their fast-forward in the workshop. We encourage an emphasis on lessons learned from practical experience for application discussions, particularly where visual computing has been employed in a real, working environment. Viewpoint papers are submitted with author names and affiliations. Accepted viewpoint papers will be electronically archived, are fully citable publications and will be presented orally at the conference in (approximately) 12-15 minute presentations. Extended Abstracts / Posters - The purpose of this track is to present late-breaking results, work in progress, and follow-up extensions or evaluations of existing methods. In particular, it provides young researchers, especially postgraduate students, with valuable opportunities to receive feedback from other researchers, and engage in stimulating discussions. The poster track will be managed by the co-chair team and the International Program Committee (IPC). We solicit poster submissions in the form of an extended abstract of at most 2 pages (with an additional page allowed for references only). Posters will be peer-reviewed in a one-stage process. Accepted posters, size A1 recommended, will be presented at the poster viewing session of the conference. In addition to directly submitted posters, some submissions to the full, short and viewpoint paper tracks, that are not accepted for publication but are deemed suitable, will be offered an opportunity to be presented as posters. Such submissions will not require an additional review process. The ever-increasing global awareness, practice, and teaching of information and data visualization includes a growing audience of consumers and creators. Building on the success of two prior IEEE VIS workshops in 2016 and 2018, this workshop focuses on how to implement an actionable framework around guidelines for the wider visualization and non-visualization community. Submit your ongoing work and innovative ideas as short papers up to 4 pages and be part of a vibrant half-day workshop that will bring together an exciting program with papers and discussions. In other words, the workshop wants to deliver concrete ideas and meta(!)- guidelines about how the community can contribute to the collection, storage, formulation, and dissemination of guidelines—within and beyond the visualization community. Our goals for this workshop are: Discuss work-in-progress and current activities around visualization guidelines: new guidelines, management systems, teaching activities, studies, etc. Collect a comprehensive list of common and less common guidelines, including references, examples, counter-examples, etc. Based on this collection exercise, create and discuss a possible framework, or template, or methodology to capture guidelines. With this proposal, we provide an initial template, the ‘Guideline Report’ (see online). As empirical and design knowledge about data visualization grows, and as data visualization is becoming a more widespread activity and application, we need a framework and technological platform where we can propose, discuss, and study guidelines as scientific activities and where we can balance the formative nature of guidelines and their exceptions. Create and discuss activities to engage students, workshop participants, practitioners, designers, data analyst experts, and other visualization stakeholders to express and reflect on their guidelines. An independent community of visualization practitioners has sprung up, producing and deconstructing visualizations of broad interest. Free visualization tools are widely available and used. The VisComm workshop brings together practitioners and researchers from a broad range of disciplines to address questions raised by visualization’s new communicative role. We encourage participation from journalists, designers, and others that do not typically attend the IEEE Visualization conference. Participation VisComm seeks short research papers, short position papers, and posters. In addition, Viscomm accepts visual case studies, which allow visualization practitioners to present their visualizations, and discuss how they were designed and received by their audience. Rice University (in Houston, TX) is hiring a lecturer to teach 4-5 sections of an undergraduate "intro to data visualization" course that is part of Rice's new interdisciplinary minor in data science. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible lectureship that comes with a one-year contract that will be extended to regular three-year contracts in subsequent years, depending on teaching performance. This is a stable, fully funded position in a growing program. This will be a full-day workshop taking place as part of IEEE VIS 2020. This year, you can contribute to VIS4DH 2020 in two ways - you can submit to the Paper track (just like in previous years), or you can submit to the Provocations track (new this year). Our call for submissions is open to all fields of the humanities/social sciences and all branches of visualization. The workshop is intended to put different ways of seeing, knowing, articulating, and transforming arguments into dialogue in order to foster and to intensify collaborations between humanities and visualization researchers. We are particularly interested in papers and provocations that bring different disciplines together. There are varying perspectives on the meaning and use of data that impact how we engage and debate it. “Data” seems core to visualization! Or is it? We are especially interested in a number of open questions in this space, including but not limited to the following: • What counts as data in humanities visualizations? How are marginalized forms of data mobilized? • What makes data data (or not data)? Is data always digital? • What methods can be explored for constructing, collecting, and/or analyzing data at the intersection of visualization and the (digital) humanities? How does data and its representations affect our interpretations? • What gets lost and/or constructed when transforming data? How can we make constructions/transformations visible? • How do we visually measure and convey differences in data? • How can we maintain a focus on the particular while enabling higher-level views? • What is the role of (interactive) visualization in transdisciplinary data- and humanities-driven exchange? • How do we make sure that interactions with data and its representations are faithful? • How can we re-imagine an engagement with data through visualization that takes an inclusive, embracing transdisciplinary perspective? We invite papers at the intersection of visualization and (digital) humanities that provide both theoretical and applied perspectives around these and other questions. For our paper track we are seeking works from scholars in visualization, the humanities, social science, and the arts who use visualization as part of the process of analyzing and interrogating human culture. Submissions will present original research ideas or results as they relate to visualization for the digital humanities. Each submission should clearly state its specific contribution to this growing field of research. # Submitting a paper Submissions will take the form of short (4-6 page - excluding references) papers. Submissions are meant to describe and critically discuss works at the intersection of visualization and humanities research, including applied case studies and empirical results and/or theoretical perspectives. We welcome works that highlight the difficulties (and proposed solutions) of designing visualizations in the context of humanities research and/or applying concepts from humanities research to foster visualization research and design. Authors of accepted papers will be invited to present their paper at the workshop. All presentations will be followed by a lively discussion with workshop participants. This years submissions to the Provocations track should reflect on the following question: What is the most undervalued or misunderstood issue surrounding the use of the term “data” in visualization and (digital) humanities collaborations? # Submitting a provocation Submissions to the Provocations track should take the following format: • Title: Provide a title that roughly describes the topic of your provocation/viewpoint. • Summary of provocation (1 sentence): One-sentence summary that describes the essence of your viewpoint/argument. • Provocation statement & argument (200 words): Provides a brief description of your provocation and its argument. • Counter-Perspective(s) (optional, 100 words): Provides potential counter-arguments to your provocation. Accepted authors will be invited to present their viewpoint and argument in form of a panel discussion at the workshop. Accepted provocations will also be published on the workshop website. Recent years have seen the emergence of such data visualization activities in different contexts, including education, visualization design, activism, self-reflection, and interdisciplinary collaboration: Sketching aids designers to consider alternative ideas; Manipulating tokens help students conceptualize quantities for data visualization; User interviews and discussions help developers understand requirements Manipulating data help activist better understand social issues The goals of this workshop include: start building an understanding and to synthesize protocols and materials used to lead data vis activities, to bring together researchers, practitioners, and educators from within and outside of the visualization community, brainstorm, design, experience, and try novel activities, and to discuss issues around goals, methods, audiences, materials, and evaluation for teaching data visualization.
