Thank you and kind regards, Katy Bӧrner, Lisel Record, & Todd Theriault Curators, Mapping Science exhibit, http://scimaps.org 2022 Call for Macroscopes Background and Goals The Places & Spaces: Mapping Science exhibit is designed to open people’s minds and hearts to the value, complexity, and beauty of science and technology. We are inviting authors of interactive data visualizations, also called macroscopes, to submit their work for inclusion in the Places & Spaces: Mapping Science exhibit. IMPORTANT DATES Submissions due: Feb 15, 2022 Mapmakers notified: Apr 1, 2022 Submit final entries: May 30, 2022 Ready for display: Aug 31, 2022 Macroscopes are software tools that help us focus on patterns in data that are too large or complex to see with the naked eye. The idea of the macroscope was explored in 1979 by Joël de Rosnay in a book titled The Macroscope: A New World Scientific System [1]. To meet the challenges posed by the rapidly increasing abundance, diversity, and complexity of information, de Rosnay proposed the macroscope, a tool for observing “what is at once too great, too slow, and too complex for our eyes.” Like microscopes and telescopes, macroscopes can startle us when we point them at objects we thought we already knew. Through their lens, we may see familiar structures in a new light or gain a fresh perspective on an old process. This year’s call for submissions to the Places & Spaces exhibit celebrates the decidedly scopic feature of macroscopes. Simply put, we are looking for interactive visualizations that disrupt our old habits of seeing, that challenge our common patterns of perception in order that we might see something anew. To do so, they may use novel datasets and algorithms or employ innovative user interface designs. Places & Spaces is a traveling exhibit that currently features 100 maps and 28 interactive macroscopes from a wide range of disciplines. Since 2005, the exhibit has traveled to 28 countries and appeared in various formats at over 382 venues and events, including the Davos Economic Forum, National Academy of Sciences, and the New York Public Library. Submission Details Interactive data visualizations designed for desktop, mobile, touch-enabled, and/or large (e.g., tiled wall) devices are all welcome. To be incorporated into the exhibit kiosk, macroscopes must be 1) web-based, 2) touch-enabled, 3) allowed to run inside an iframe element, 4) have CORS enabled for http://idemo.cns. iu.edu, and 5) served over HTTPS. Macroscopes will be deployed on a 46” multi-touch 1920 x 1080 display running Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and Chrome 91. Each macroscope should be fully functional for at least two years. Macroscopes might be deployed using other hardware, please contact the curatorial team to discuss options. Macroscope authors should be available to work with the exhibit staff over a period of three months to prepare the macroscopes for public display and travel. Each entry must be submitted by February 15, 2022, and needs to include: * Title of macroscope * Author(s) name, email address, affiliation, mailing address, and social media handles * Link to online site that features the macroscope tool or to executable code * Macroscope tool description (300 words max): user group and needs served, data used, data * analysis performed, visualization techniques applied, and main insights gained. Please also outline * the vision that this new macroscope embodies. * References to relevant publications or online sites that should be cited, links to related projects or * works * Describe the impact your data visualization has had on public awareness, social policy, or political * action. * Submit entries via https://forms.gle/wPr5X16Cm5MwDb7c9 Review Process Submissions will be reviewed and evaluated by the exhibit advisory board (listed below) in terms of their: * Scientific rigor * Value as a tool for data exploration * Ability to provide new, actionable insights * Relevance for a general audience Final Submission Authors of winning entries will be contacted by April 1, 2022 and invited to submit final entries by May 30, 2022. Each final entry consists of: * Link to online site that features the macroscope tool or link to executable code. This must be a * fully self-contained version of the macroscope that can operate without any outside links and * without opening new windows. * Biographies for all authors (100 words each) * High resolution author portraits that are no smaller than 360 x 450 pixels, or 1.2” x 1.5” at 300 dpi. * Signed copyright and reproduction agreement Authors are welcome to use the expertise and resources of the exhibit curators and designers. For this year, we will target the database community, which is one of the first communities to formalize provenance research, providing the theoretical foundations such as the widely adopted W3C PROV specifications. Recently provenance and visualization have been adopted to address core database challenges such as query, workflow, and dependency. There is a clear need to build closer connections between the two communities. For this year, the workshop’s main goals are: 1. To establish and improve the collaboration between the visualization and database community on provenance-related research through a discussion of challenges that span both communities; 2. To further advance data provenance research within the database community to address the latest challenges, such as support for big data management, data processing, data sharing, or query optimization supported by provenance; 3. To further advance analytic provenance research within the visualization community to address the latest challenges, such as support for machine learning and visualization reproducibility. Scope of Topics: While we are interested in any submissions at the intersection of provenance and visualization, we are especially focused on: * What can we learn when contrasting the problems of these two communities? Is there any visualization problem that can benefit from a database/analytic provenance method or vice versa? * What are the most pressing provenance-related challenges in the database community? Is there any visualization-related solution to them? For example, * What visualization techniques may be used to assist the database community in constructing retrospective and prospective provenance that are more interactive, scalable, and user-friendly? * How can query languages be supported from the standpoint of provenance? * What are the opportunities for provenance in emerging visualization research areas such as machine learning visualization and visualization reproducibility? For example, * How do we show changes to visualizations, interactions, or algorithms over time in various domains, including progressive visualizations, interactive visualizations, and machine learning training? * How do we transparently and efficiently share visualizations and their production processes? Submission: We will accept research papers/extended abstracts or position papers. Your submission should be commensurate with the level of contribution but is required to be at least 2 pages (plus references). Submissions that violate the submission guidelines or that receive low review scores from the coordinator and the secondary reviewer will be rejected. The other submissions will receive a total of at least three reviews. Based on the reviews and in consultation with a subset of the IPC, the Program Chairs will make one of the following initial recommendations for each submission: - *Conditionally accept as IEEE TVCG paper.* Continuing our cooperation with the IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (TVCG), these submissions with substantial contribution will be considered for publication in a special issue of IEEE TVCG. - *Conditionally accept as conference paper.* These submissions will be considered for inclusion in the Proceedings of IEEE VR, archived in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library. - *Recommend for major revision to IEEE TVCG.* This recommendation is reserved for submissions that make a substantial contribution but that require revisions beyond what can be achieved within the conference reviewing process. These submissions will be given the option of major revision to IEEE TVCG. Reviewer continuity will be attempted but not guaranteed. Note that as per IEEE TVCG rules a single major revision is possible. - *Recommend as a two-page poster.* Authors of a submission receiving this recommendation have the option of condensing their submission into a two-page poster, including references. Additional Guidelines *Abstract Submission.* Note that a paper abstract must be uploaded seven days prior to the actual paper submission deadline. This facilitates the process of assigning reviewers, as the review process operates on a very tight schedule. *Ethics and Responsibility.* All submissions describing research experiments with human participants must follow the appropriate ethical guidelines required by the authors’ institution, and authors are required to secure and report their approval by the relevant ethics committee. An approval by any ethical review board, if required by your institution, needs to be indicated via the submission system. *Review Duties for Authors.* The increasing number of submissions for IEEE VR makes us all dependent on a large number of good reviewers who are willing to provide constructive feedback and engage with authors on their work. To expand the reviewing pool and to promote quality reviews, one author will be required to register to review up to three papers through PCS at the time of submission. Additionally, senior authors are encouraged to ask experienced junior authors to register in PCS to review papers, and then to mentor the junior authors during the review process. *Presentation at the Conference.* All accepted submissions must be presented orally at the conference. An in-person presentation is expected, and online presentations will be accommodated only in exceptional cases. *Submission Language.* All paper submissions must be in English. *Previous Publication and Plagiarism.* Submitted manuscripts must not have been previously published. A manuscript is considered to have been previously published if it has appeared in a peer-reviewed journal, magazine, book, or meeting proceedings that is reliably and permanently available afterward in print or electronic form to non-attendees, regardless of the language of that publication. A manuscript identical or substantially similar in content (in its entirety or in part) to one submitted to VR should not be simultaneously under consideration for another conference or journal during any part of the VR review process, from the submission deadline until notifications of decisions are emailed to authors. In some situations, a submission may build upon prior work. In order to fully explain the relationship between the submitted paper and prior work, authors may upload additional papers as well as a non-anonymous letter of explanation that highlights the significant changes or advances; these materials will only be seen by the primary reviewer. *Call for Bids*. Once a year, the IEEE VR Publicity Committee sends to relevant email mailing lists a “Call for Bids to host IEEE VR Conferences”. In the Call for Bids, the IEEE VR Conference Steering Committee is reaching out to our community to solicit interest for hosting future IEEE VR Conferences. Bids can be submitted at any time throughout the year. Also, the Steering Committee encourages those active in the IEEE VR community to consider hosting a future IEEE VR conference. Those interested in hosting the five-day conference should email the IEEE VR Steering Committee Chair, J. Edward Swan II (swan(a)acm.org) a brief (one page) statement of interest. The statement of interest should include information about potential hosts, their previous participation with the IEEE VR Conference, potential locations (cities, convention facilities), possible years for hosting, the capacity of the area to support the conference (hotels and options for international travel), and previous conference organizing experience. At the IEEE VR Conference, the Call for Bids is reiterated during the closing conference remarks. *Consideration of Bids.* The IEEE VR Steering Committee meets regularly to discuss conference organizing and management topics. During these meetings, the committee reviews the submitted bids. The IEEE VR Steering Committee selects the general and program chairs for the IEEE VR Conference. To select the chairs, the IEEE VR Steering Committee applies a data-driven methodology to identify and invite candidates. The IEEE VR Steering Committee begins the selection process in March. The goal is to staff all committees rapidly. The IEEE VR General Chairs are a combination of (usually one to two) people who are hosting the conference along with chairs that hosted the IEEE VR conference the previous year. This combination of new and returning chairs enables expertise and experience to be carried over from previous conferences. This year, the IEEE VR 2023 General Chairs (Xubo Yang and Kun Zhou) have been joined by two IEEE VR 2022 General Chairs (Tobias Langlotz and Stephan Lukosch) to improve the preparation and organization of the conference. The IEEE VR Program Chairs are a combination of people who are invited by the Steering Committee along with program chairs from previous IEEE VR conferences. New program chairs are selected by first rank-ordering recent conference organization committee membership and international program committee membership. Then, the geographical location and background of researchers are also considered, with a goal to form a group of diverse and representative chairs that are well-versed with the paper submission and review process. The steering committee sends out invitations to the general and program chairs selected. If people decline the invitation, the committee invites the next candidates from the ranking given the desired makeup of the final committee. *The process used to select members of the steering committee. *The IEEE VR Steering Committee is composed of members who serve six- to seven-year terms. New committee members are considered each year to replace a retiring member or to expand the committee to manage the expanding growth and complexity of the IEEE VR community and conference. Potential steering committee invitees are selected from a rank-ordering of recent conference organization committee membership and international program committee membership. In particular, IEEE VR conference hosting is valued. The geographical location and background of researchers are also considered. The goal is to form a diverse and representative committee with a global perspective of the IEEE VR conference. The committee recognizes that there are still many areas underrepresented in the IEEE VR community. In recent years, three initiatives have begun to improve representation: the committees increasingly are using data on participation and contribution to the community to make informed decisions, have increased documentation of the processes employed in awards and conference leadership selection (through archived statements such as this one), and have developed a mentorship initiative to develop leadership skills amongst our newer and junior members in the IEEE VR community. Hello Visualization Researchers, In case you're not already aware of this resource, be aware that the Data Visualization Society supports researchers in recruiting study participants. Many research studies actively recruit data visualization practitioners as research subjects, while others explicitly look for folks outside of our field. *As a professional society, DVS aims to bring together data visualization communities, like academics and practitioners.* Every so often, we see a call for participants shared on our DVS Slack, but we know that Slack only reaches a subset of our members and it’s easy to miss out on one of those opportunities. To address that need to better connect researchers with potential study participants, when we launched our new membership intake form in 2021, members could opt-in to a dedicated list to learn about opportunities to participate as research subjects in academic studies. To date, we have nearly *7,000 members* who have said ‘yes’ to receiving study invitations, and we want to make that resource more accessible to researchers interested in connecting with those members. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION *Value to the field: *As a Society, we believe in the value of connecting researchers and practitioners in different ways. The academic research distribution list is one tool for enabling those kinds of connections. Researchers can connect with potential study participants actively working in the field of data visualization, while practitioners can contribute to the generation of new knowledge to inform our work and learn more about how research studies are conducted by participating. *Who is eligible to submit studies: *Currently, the distribution list is limited to sharing study invitations from academics and students affiliated with a university or evaluators who are conducting research for the purpose of informing the practice of data visualization. The rationale for these constraints is to amplify study invitations that have been reviewed for appropriate informed consent and study protocols by an Institutional Review Board or equivalent. At this time, questionnaires developed as personal projects or more informal studies are not eligible to be shared with the distribution list.
