You are invited to join the Opening Reception of the Places & Spaces: Mapping Science exhibit at the Science, Industry and Business Library of The New York Public Library, New York, NY on Monday, April 3, 2006, 6:00-7:30pm. WHAT: Today, the word "science" encompasses myriad arenas of physical and abstract inquiry. This unique exhibition, at the Healy Hall in midtown Manhattan, uses innovative mapping techniques to physically show what and where science is today, how different branches of science relate to each other and where different branches of study are heading, where cutting edge science is erupting as archipelagos in the oceans of the yet unknown - and - how it all relates back to the physical centers of research. The world of science is turned into a navigable landscape. Modern mapping imagery has come a long way from Ptolemy. In this stimulating show compelling for all ages and backgrounds, audiences will both visually and tactilely uncover how contemporary scientific thought has expanded. Such visualization of scientific progress is approached through computer-generated relationships, featured on large panels as well through the collaboration of New York based artists W. Bradford Paley, Digital Image Design Incorporated and Columbia University and Ingo Gunther with renowned scientist from the field of scientonometrics: Eugene Garfield, Henry Small, André Skupin, Steven A. Morris, Kevin W. Boyack and Dick Klavans. Scientists will be stimulated, students and teachers encouraged, and the general public fascinated by this multi-layered accessible approach to the worlds of modern scientific thought. Test your tools / Sharpen your problem solving skills / Win prizes VAST 2006 CONTEST A tale of Alderwood (Part of IEEE Symposium on Visual Analytics and Technology 2006) www.cs.umd.edu/hcil/VASTcontest06 The VAST Contest is a participation category of the IEEE VAST 2006 Symposium. It continues in the footsteps of the InfoVis contests with its purpose to promote the development of benchmarks for visual analytics and establish a forum to advance evaluation methods. The dataset consists mostly of news stories from Alderwood's city newspaper, along with some multimedia materials and background information. The goal is to determine if inappropriate activities are taking place and to provide evidence based hypotheses and conclusions. Participants will have several months to prepare their submissions. Selected entries will present at the conference, and some teams will be invited to participate in a special workshop before the conference, during which professional analysts will interact with the winners' systems and provide personal feedback. Since 2004, this symposium has brought together researchers from the fields of perception, graphics and visualization, to facilitate a wider exchange of ideas. Our goals are to use insights from perception to advance the design of methods for visual, auditory and haptic representation, and to use computer graphics to enable perceptual research that would otherwise not be possible. Submissions are invited in the broad range of areas at the intersection of computer graphics, visualization and perception. Specific examples include, but are not limited to: - applications of insights from perception to the development of algorithms for more efficient, effective or realistic modeling, rendering and/or animation - applications of perception in the design and evaluation of methods for more effective representation and communication of data - the study of perception and perceptual issues in virtual environments - computational aesthetics, stylization, and perceptual aspects of non-photorealistic rendering Submissions are particularly welcome in all areas of basic perception research that have applications in computer graphics and visualization. DEADLINES Paper submission: April 7, 2006 Notification of acceptance: June 12, 2006 Final papers due: July 7, 2006 Software visualization encompasses the development and evaluation of methods for graphically representing different aspects of software, including its structure, its abstract and concrete execution, and its evolution. The goal of this symposium is to provide a forum for researchers from different backgrounds (HCI, software engineering, programming languages, visualization, computer science education) to discuss and present original research on software visualization. Over the years SOFTIVS has become the premier venue for presenting all types of research on software visualization. After SOFTVIS03 in San Diego, and SOFTVIS05 in St. Louis, the third iteration of this conference series will be co-located with the IEEE Symposium on Visual Languages and Human-Centric Computing and with the Psychology of Programmers Interest Group (PPIG) Workshop in Brighton, UK. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Papers We seek theoretical as well as practical papers on applications, techniques, tools and case studies. The research laboratory IN-SITU, part of INRIA Futurs (insitu.lri.fr), is seeking 3-5 highly motivated individuals for research projects in the field of Information Visualization: · Bioinformatics within the Microbiogenomics project (see http://microbiogenomics.u-psud.fr/) · Analysis of large online communities (see http://autograph.fing.org/news/12.shtml) · Visualization for understanding and controlling supervised classification methods, with several application domains. There is a considerable degree of flexibility for the direction of the research.
