The 3rd IEEE Workshop on Interactive Visual Text Analytics: Integrated Analysis of Heterogeneous Data and Ubiquitous Text Analytics IEEE VIS 2013 Atlanta, GA USA October 2013 http://www.textvis.org Much research has been reported on visual text analytics for plain text documents viewed in traditional analytic settings. In this workshop, we would like to push the boundary of visual text analytics toward heterogeneous textual data (text associated with other data types) and ubiquitous text analytics. First, we would like to use the workshop to collect various use cases about heterogeneous data and ubiquitous text analytics. From the use cases, we hope to better understand the requirements of heterogeneous textual data analysis from a task-driven perspective. Although there is some work on visual analysis of heterogeneous textual data, there is not a clear understanding of the typical tasks that people would like to achieve in analyzing heterogeneous textual data. Moreover, how will different tasks influence the design and development of both text analytics and visualization technologies? We thus would like to leverage the workshop to examine a number of use cases and draft a taxonomy that characterizes the design dimensions of the space and guide the future design and development. Second, based on the use cases, we would like to use this workshop to examine how to best leverage state-of-the-art text analytics and traditional data mining techniques in conjunction with novel interactive visual analytics to address the challenges manifested by the collected use cases. PAPER SUBMISSION ================== We invite 2-4 page position paper submissions that address topics related to interactive visual analysis of heterogeneous data or visual analysis of text data on mobile devices or in ubiquitous scenarios, with a requirement that every submission must clearly state one or more concrete use cases, including the tasks to be achieved, the two or more types of data to be analyzed, and data analytic methods used. VizSec brings together researchers and practitioners in information visualization and security to address the specific needs of the cyber security community through new and insightful visualization techniques. VizSec will be held as a workshop at IEEE VIS. The proceedings will be in the ACM Digital Library. Proceedings will be publicly available for one week prior to the event. Call for Papers ======================================= The 10th Visualization for Cyber Security (VizSec) is a forum that brings together researchers and practitioners from academia, government, and industry to address the needs of the cyber security community through new and insightful visualization and analysis techniques. VizSec will provide an excellent venue for fostering greater exchange and new collaborations on a broad range of security- and privacy-related topics. Accepted papers will appear in the ACM Digital Library as part of the ACM International Conference Proceedings Series. Important research problems often lie at the intersection of disparate domains. Our focus is to explore effective, scalable visual interfaces for security domains, where visualization may provide a distinct benefit, including computer forensics, reverse engineering, insider threat detection, cryptography, privacy, preventing 'user assisted' attacks, compliance management, wireless security, secure coding, and penetration testing in addition to traditional network security. Human time and attention are precious resources. We are particularly interested in visualization and interaction techniques that effectively capture human analyst insights so that further processing may be handled by machines, freeing the analyst for other tasks. For example, a malware analyst might use a visualization system to analyze a new piece of malicious software and then facilitate generating a signature for future machine processing. When appropriate, research that incorporates multiple data sources, such as network packet captures, firewall rule sets and logs, DNS logs, web server logs, and/or intrusion detection system logs, is particularly desirable. Technical Papers --------------------------------------- Full papers offering novel contributions in security visualization are solicited. Papers may present techniques, applications, practical experience, theory, analysis, or experiments and evaluations. We encourage papers on technologies and methods that promise to improve cyber security practices, including, but not limited to: - Situational awareness / understanding - Incident handling including triage, exploration, correlation, and response - Computer forensics - Recording and reporting results of investigation - Reverse engineering and malware analysis - Multiple data source analysis - Analyzing information requirements for computer network defense - Evaluation / User testing of VizSec systems - Criteria for assessing the effectiveness of cyber security visualizations (whether from a security goal perspective or a human factors perspective) - Modeling system and network behavior - Modeling attacker and defender behavior - Studying risk and impact of cyber attacks - Predicting future attacks or targets - Security metrics and education - Software security - Mobile application security - Social networking privacy and security - Cyber intelligence - Human factors in cyber security Posters --------------------------------------- Poster submissions may showcase late-breaking results, work in progress, preliminary results, or visual representations relevant to the VizSec community. Accepted poster abstracts will be made available on this website. Awards --------------------------------------- There will be an award for the best paper from the accepted program. The best paper award will be given to the paper judged to have the highest overall quality. A key element of the best paper selection process will be whether the results are believed to be repeatable by other scientists based on the algorithms and data provided in the paper. This award will be chosen by the program committee. Data --------------------------------------- If you do not have real-world data to demonstrate your visualization, you may be interested in looking at the VAST 2012 Challenge data. VAST 2011 also had cyber security data if you are looking for additional data. Submissions ======================================= Papers --------------------------------------- Papers should be at most 8 pages including the bibliography and appendices. Committee members are not required to read the appendices or any pages past the maximum. Submissions not meeting these guidelines will be rejected without consideration of their merits. Submitted papers must not substantially overlap papers that have been published or that are simultaneously submitted to a journal or a conference with proceedings. Authors of accepted papers must guarantee that their papers will be presented at the conference, preferably by themselves or by prior arrangement through a delegate. ----------------------- Call for Papers ------------------------ IUI 2014 19th International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces (IUI'2014) Haifa, Israel February 24-27, 2014 http://www.iuiconf.org/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------- SCOPE AND TOPICS OF INTEREST ----------------------------------------------------------------------- IUI 2014 is the 19th annual meeting of the intelligent interfaces community and serves as the principal international forum for reporting outstanding research and development on intelligent user interfaces. IUI is where the community of people interested in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) meets the Artificial Intelligence (AI) community. We are very interested in contributions that bridge these two fields and also related fields, such as psychology, cognitive science, computer graphics, the arts, etc. IUI researchers are interested in improving the symbiosis between humans and computers, so that interface design and interactive experiences yield higher performance outcomes. This may involve designing interfaces that incorporate intelligent automated capabilities, if the net impact is a human-computer interaction that improves performance or usability in critical ways. It may also involve designing an interface that effectively leverages human skills and capabilities, so that human performance with an application excels. In other cases, such as educational interface design, it may involve exercising judgment in when not to automate a function so that humans are encouraged to exert themselves as they acquire new skills or domain knowledge. We call for original submissions that describe novel technologies and applications to intelligent user interfaces. Accepted papers will be published in the ACM Digital Library. IUI 2014 especially encourages submissions on innovative and visionary new concepts or directions for interface design. We do not require evaluations with users, but we do expect papers to include an appropriate evaluation for their stated contribution. Full papers should make substantial, novel and relevant contributions to the field. Short papers can either contain smaller contributions, novel ground-breaking ideas, or work in progress. Accepted full papers will be invited for oral presentation and short paper either as oral or poster presentation. Abstracts Due: October 4, 2013 Full and Short Papers Due: October 9, 2013 * Demonstrations The demonstrations track complements the overall program of the conference. Demonstrations show implementations of novel, interesting, and important intelligent user interface concepts or systems. We invite submissions relevant to intelligent user interfaces and which address, but are not limited to, the topics of the conference. All submissions are intended to convey a scientific result or work in progress and should not be advertisements for commercial software packages. Submissions Due: December 12, 2013 * Industrial Track The industrial track represents an opportunity for the companies in the field to present their late work (as presentations, posters or interactive demos) and receive valuable feedback from the research community. It also provides an opportunity for recruitment and for networking. The industry track will not be peer-reviewed but the relevance of proposals for the field will be judged by a jury. We invite students who feel they would benefit from this kind of feedback on their research to apply for this unique opportunity to share their work with students in a similar situation as well as senior researchers in the field. What's the score?: The 1st Workshop on Sports Data Visualization IEEE VIS 2013 Atlanta, Georgia October 2013 http://workshop.sportvis.com Few areas involve, generate, and celebrate data in the manner that sports does. Almost any sport, be it individual or team, produces large amounts of data as the result of matches, data that lend themselves to statistical analysis. This area of sports analytics continues to gain popularity and is perhaps most connected to the sport of baseball, largely through the work of people like Bill James and books and films such as Moneyball. More recently, other sports, including basketball, soccer, professional football, ice hockey, and golf have begun to be the focus of analytics research. Surprisingly, there have been few applications of visualization presentation and exploration tools to sports data. General purpose displays, interaction techniques, and tools like Tableau are often used to present simple views of sports data, but complex structure and relationships in the data frequently necessitate approaches that leverage domain knowledge. Some sports-specific visualizations exist (for example, the commonly used basketball shot chart), but they have largely remained stagnant. Special-purpose tools that allow people to explore and analyze sports data interactively could not only enhance the enjoyment of fans, but also assist media coverage and team officials' decision making. This workshop will serve as the first meeting of researchers and practitioners interested in presenting sports data through visualization. It will provide an opportunity for those engaged in this topic to interact and share their experiences. Hopefully, it will spur growth in a new sub-area of data visualization for the future. All registered attendees of VisWeek are encouraged to attend the workshop. In order to present a paper, it is necessary to have your paper accepted. Papers ------ We are soliciting papers and presentations covering topics across the visualization spectrum, including visualization design, presentation and storytelling techniques and tools, and more traditional infovis tools for exploration. Work should focus on topics specific to the use of visualization on sports data, rather than general tools or techniques with only a tangential connection to sports data. Specific topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Design ideas and representations for sports data visualizations, * Visual methods for storytelling with sports data, * Exploration and discovery within sports data, * Data and visual analytics techniques for sports data, * Visualization designs for specific sports domains, * Visualization designs for specific target audiences (e.g. officials, team managers, or the general public), * Tools and techniques for visual representation or exploration of data for a single game, * Tools and techniques for visual representation or exploration of data for multiple games or matches, * Evaluation methodologies and guidelines. Papers can be up to eight pages long, with the length of the submission corresponding to the technique's contribution. All papers will be peer-reviewed by the workshop organizers. Visual Analytics for Biological Data Final submissions due: 21 July 2013 Publication date: March/April 2014 http://www.computer.org/portal/web/computingnow/cgacfp2 The emergence of pre-eminent systems approaches in biological and life-sciences creates enormous challenges for computational visualization techniques to enable researchers to gain insight from their large, highly complex, and multiple data sets. The special issue of IEEE Computer Graphics & Applications on Visual Analytics for Biological Data seeks contributions that describe applications of visual analytics techniques to yield viable results that are biologically relevant and significant. We welcome case studies that were greatly facilitated or could not have been completed in the absence of visual analytics techniques. Existing, modified, or new analytical and visualization techniques can be applied to verify prevailing or novel hypotheses or to allow for discovery of new facts and hypotheses as manifest in the data. Ideally, the submitted case studies should be conducted by teams of researchers from the visualization and bioinformatics or biology communities. We are looking for contributions ranging from data on organization, form, and function of phenotypes that may come from a multitude of scales ranging from molecular and subcellular, to cell, tissue, organism and populations thereof. Similarly, contributions that visualize and analyze genomic alterations and explain associations between genotypes and phenotypes (for example, eQTL studies, GWAS) are welcome. It is important that the submissions have a narrative that highlights utility in terms of successful, biologically-relevant results. Suggested case studies include, but are not limited to: - genome and sequence data, including genomic variation data, - multivariate omics data (transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and so on), - biological networks (protein-protein interactions, co-expression, and so on) and pathways, - structures (for example, protein or RNA structures) and their relationship to function, - association studies in the clinic and the laboratory (eQTL, GWAS), - visualization in neurobiology and developmental biology, - integration of visualization in biological workflows or collaborative processes, - visualization and visual analytics of integrated biological data sets (for example, image and omics data) for purposes of biomarkers, and subtyping, and so on, - creative visual-analysis of publicly available datasets (for example, The Cancer Genome Atlas, Allen Brain Atlas, and son on) and privately curated datasets, and - creation and visualization of ontologies, biological atlases and metadata.
