UMAP is the successor to the biennial User Modeling (UM) and Adaptive Hypermedia and Adaptive Web-based Systems (AH) conferences that were merged in 2009. It is organized under the auspices of User Modeling Inc. UMAP covers a wide variety of research areas where adaptation may be applied. This include (but is in no way limited to) a number of domains in which researchers are enabling significant innovations based on advances in user modeling and adaptation: Intelligent tutoring systems and intelligent learning environments; Recommender systems; eCommerce; Advertising; Credit checking; Digital humanities; eGovernment; Cultural heritage; Personalized health; and more. Maintaining the high quality and impact of the UMAP series, each paper will have three reviews by program committee members and a meta-review presenting the reviewers’ consensual view; the review process will be coordinated by the program chairs in collaboration with the corresponding area chairs. EXPERIENCE TRACK Peer reviewed papers showcasing innovative use of User Modeling, Adaptation and Personalisation, exploring the benefits and challenges of applying user modeling techniques and adaptation technology in real-life applications and contexts. Papers will be assessed based on the novelty of the application, the potential impact from the utilization of user modeling and adaptation technologies in the specific case, and the usefulness of the presented experience for extending the UMAP research and application. - Long experience papers (12 pages): Long experience papers should present substantive ‘in-use’ case for UMAP research. They should place the work within the field, clearly indicate the novelty of the application, and present the impact and significance of the experience to advance the UMAP research and application. - Short experience papers (6 pages): Short experience papers should present an original and highly promising application of user modeling and adaptation technologies, whose merit will be assessed in terms of originality and importance rather than maturity and extensive user validation. RESEARCH TRACK Peer reviewed, original, and principled research papers addressing both the theory and practice of User Modeling, Adaptation and Personalization. Papers will be assessed based on the originality and significance of the presented contribution to the research field, as well as their technical soundness and overall readability. - Long research papers (12 pages): Long research papers should present original reports of substantive new research. They should place the work within the field, and clearly indicate its innovative aspects and its significance. - Short research papers (6 pages): Short research papers should present original and highly promising research, whose merit will be assessed in terms of originality and importance rather than maturity and technical validation. SUBMISSION AND PUBLICATION Papers must be formatted according to Springer’s LNCS style guidelines ( http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-6-793341-0) and not exceed the page length, as specified above. The long and short paper categories will be strictly kept apart in the submission and review process. Accepted papers will be distributed to conference attendees, and also published by Springer in both online and printed conference proceedings. At least one author of each accepted paper must register for the conference and present the paper there. IMPORTANT DATES Paper submission: 3rd February 2014 (abstract due 27th January) Notification to authors: 24th March 2014 Camera ready submission: 14th April 2014 Note the dates apply to both experience and research track papers. The workshops provide a venue to discuss and explore emerging areas of User Modelling and Adaptive Hypermedia research with a group of like-minded researchers and practitioners from Industry and academia. We welcome proposals for half-day and full-day workshops. We encourage proposals for a wide range of workshops, including but not limited to: - Working group meetings around a specific problem or topic; such workshops may wish to ask participants to submit a white paper or position statement. - Mini-conferences on specialized topics; such workshops may have their own paper submission and review processes. - Mini-competitions or challenges around selected topics with individual or team participation. =============== PROPOSAL FORMAT =============== The workshop proposals should be PDF documents not exceeding 5 pages, submitted by email to the workshop chairs. The proposals should be organized as follows: - Workshop title and acronym - Workshop chair(s), including affiliation, email address, homepage, and experiences in organizing such events - Abstract (up to 300 words) and topics - Motivation on why the topic is of particular interest at this time - Workshop format, discussing the mix of events such as paper presentations, invited talks, panels, and general discussion - Intended audience and expected number of participants - List of (potential) members of the program committee (at least 50% have to be confirmed at the time of the proposal) - Requested duration (half day or full day) - Past versions of the workshop, including URLs as well as submission and acceptance statistics. Additionally, we strongly suggest to have organizers from different institutions, bringing different perspectives to the workshop topic. We welcome workshops with a creative structure that attracts various types of contributions and ensures rich interactions. The organizers of accepted workshops will prepare a workshop web site containing the call for papers and detailed information about the workshop organization and timeline. The organizers will be responsible for their own reviewing process, publicity, and publishing electronic proceedings (e.g., on the CEUR-WS website). The Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT and the Department of Computer Science are looking for a skilled DOCTORAL STUDENT The position is initially offered for four years with a 4-month trial period. The Department of Computer Science at the University of Helsinki welcomes applications for a doctoral student in Human-Computer Interaction in particular: 1) Multimodal Interaction, for example gesture, touch, eye gaze 2) Mobile urban Augmented Reality for Cultural Access 3) Interactive Visualisation for Exploratory Search. Major update of InfoVis:Wiki

Dear colleagues, I am very happy to be able to announce a major update of the InfoVis:Wiki (http://www.infovis-wiki.net) We used the time in summer to revamp the system, cleanup all spam and introduced a number of new anti-spam measures that hopefully keep the wiki much cleaner in the future... Thanks for using and contributing to the wiki! We are hiring researchers who specialize in the visualization of spatial and spatio-temporal data and tools for visual analytics, exploratory data analysis, problem solving, and decision making. The successful candidate will develop novel interactive systems for visual analysis and communication that leverage a combination of compelling visualization and data analysis tools in order to gain actionable intelligence and insights from large data collections. Research will be conducted in the context of industry data and challenges, such as transportation, energy, social media analytics and effective natural resource management. In these domains, real-time, interactive, and incremental visualization tools are of special interest. The ideal candidate will be familiar with visualization programming environments such as IBM ILOG Visualization Software, Processing, HTML5, dojo, Java, Adobe Flex, and a basic knowledge of data mining and data analytics techniques.
