This study was commissioned by CISE’s Division of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure (ACI) in 2013 to examine priorities and trade-offs for advanced computing in support of NSF-supported science and engineering research. An interim report was published in Fall 2014 identifying key issues and catalyzing input from the community. The final report, which was issued in late April, considered contributions from multiple stakeholders, including more than 60 submitted comments from individuals, research groups, and organizations. The recommendations within the report aim to: (1) position the United States for continued leadership in science and engineering; (2) ensure that computing resources meet community needs; (3) aid the scientific community in keeping up with the revolution in computing, and (4) sustain the infrastructure for advanced computing. We are enthusiastic about the study’s helpful observations and recommendations. The timing of the report is excellent, syncing with planning for NSF’s future research cyberinfrastructure (CI) investments. It also nicely complements the National Strategic Computing Initiative (NSCI)<https://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2015/07/29/executive-order-crea…> that was announced last summer and some of our internal planning with respect to data infrastructure as the NSF-wide Cyberinfrastructure for 21st-Century Science, Engineering, and Education (CIF21) effort transitions. Good afternoon, Sorry if you have received multiple copies of this email. *Tulip 5.0 is available* Tulip is an information visualization framework dedicated to the analysis and visualization of relational data (Visual Analytics). Based on more than 16 years of research and development, Tulip is built on a suite of tools and techniques, that can be used to address a large variety of domain-specific problems. With Tulip, we aim to provide Python and/or C++ developers a complete library, supporting the design of interactive information visualization applications for relational data, that can be customized to address a wide range of visualization problems. Tulip enables the development of algorithms, visual encodings, interaction techniques, data models, and domain-specific visualizations. The Python programming layer wraps up Tulip as an ideal tool for fast prototyping and treatment automation, allowing to focus on problem solving, and as a great system for teaching purposes at all education levels. Tulip 5 offers new features, mainly: * a *new Python IDE* in a dedicated window allowing the coding/execution of modules, plugins or Python scripts (the older Python script view is not available any more), * numerous *import plugins* dedicated to the graph generation of known social network models, * a *BibTEX* file (.bib) import plugin, * a *CSV* export plugin. * the integration of the "*Material design icons*" (https://materialdesignicons.com[1]) to be used as node glyphs, * the management of the *Message log window and a new feature to log every call to a plugin and get output information from some plugins (e.g., modularity value from the Louvain metric algorithm)*, * Improved management of the *Drawing defaults* preferences, * Addition of a *status bar* and more documentation through tooltips. *Graph API* has been extended; new methods allowing easy multi-threaded iteration over graph nodes or edges and multi-threaded computation of nodes or edges property associated values have been added. Many algorithms have been rewritten to use these extensions giving huge performance improvements. Many bugs have been also fixed especially in the GUI. ** NIER and Tool track deadline is June 23, 2017 ** VISSOFT 2017: 5th IEEE Working Conference on Software Visualization -== Call for Papers ==- Software visualization is a broad research area whose general goal is to enhance and promote the theory, realization, and evaluation of approaches to visually encode and analyze software systems, including software development practices, evolution, structure, and software runtime behavior. Software visualization is inherently interdisciplinary, drawing on theories and techniques from information visualization and computer graphics and applying these in the software engineering domain. The VISSOFT conference is principally a venue for publishing and discussing research related to software visualization. VISSOFT brings together a community of researchers from software engineering, information visualization, computer graphics, and human-computer interaction to discuss theoretical foundations, algorithms, techniques, tools, and applications related to software visualization. This year’s VISSOFT, co-held with ICSME, encourages a variety of submissions that address outstanding challenges in software systems using visualization. This includes technical papers, empirical studies, applications, case studies, and papers that present novel ideas and tools. VISSOFT topics of interest include: * Innovative visualization and visual analytics techniques for analysis of software engineering data. This includes source code, dependencies, repositories, developer social networks like StackOverflow and GitHub, mobile app reviews, documentation, runtime logs, and DevOps data. * Visualization to support software development activities, including design, requirements engineering, program comprehension, software testing, and debugging. * Interaction techniques and algorithms for software visualization * Visualization-based techniques in software engineering education * Integration of software visualization tools with development environments * Empirical evaluation of software visualizations * Industrial experience with using software visualization * Applications of new technologies to enhance software visualization, including virtual reality, augmented reality, gamification, and machine learning. CFP: 2nd Workshop on Visualization for the Digital Humanities at IEEE VIS

Second CFP - reminder and updated dates We are soliciting contributions for the 2nd Workshop on Visualization for the Digital Humanities. This will be a half-day workshop taking place as part of IEEE VIS 2017 in Phoenix, AZ. http://vis4dh.org. The purpose of this workshop is to propose new research directions in visualization for the digital humanities, to familiarize the visualization research community with the problems faced by digital humanities researchers, and to foster future collaboration between visualization and digital humanities research. Despite the growing popularity of digital methods for research in the humanities, digital humanists are underserved by academics in visualization, and under-represented in visualization conferences. This is due to a number of factors: 1. The differences in rhetorics of proof and discovery (and so differences in data culture and use) in the humanities as opposed to other, typically scientific or analytic fields where visualization research is commonly focused. 2. The difficulty of performing task analysis and evaluation for many humanities questions, that may have no ground truth. 3. In text visualization specifically, the difference between the needs of digital humanists (who perform close readings and critical engagements with texts) as opposed to more standard text visualization scenarios (e.g. text analytics on datasets for intelligence or social media analysis). Addressing these difficulties requires exposure of these data issues, interdisciplinary collaboration, and steering of future research directions. Submission This workshop is seeking work from scholars in both visualization and the humanities who use visualization as part of the process of analyzing and interrogating human culture. Submissions will present original research ideas or results as they relate to visualization for the digital humanities. Each submission should clearly state its specific contribution to this growing field of research. Submissions will take the form of short (2-4 page) papers, falling into one of two submission types: * Short Papers: These submissions are meant to highlight emerging visualization research reporting work in progress or to summarize more mature work in visualization for the digital humanities, including case studies, system descriptions, and empirical results. Of special consideration are works that highlight the difficulties (and propose solutions) of designing visualizations for the digital humanities. Applied work from the digital humanities that is highly visual in nature would also be considered for acceptance. * Position Papers: These submissions are meant to present viewpoints and opinions on the interplay between visualization and the digital humanities. These positions should be informed by a deep involvement and experience in one (or ideally, both) fields. Position papers should be thought-provoking but also well-supported. Authors of accepted short and position papers will be invited for a 9-minute research presentation (including 2 minutes for audience questions). Additionally, they will participate in a moderated panel discussion. Submissions should be in two-column IEEE TVCG format. Thank you for your time and consideration, Paul Parsons, Vetria Byrd, and Camilo Vieira Purdue University Interest in information visualization (InfoVis) has been growing in recent years, leading to growth in InfoVis training in both academic and non-academic contexts. As a result, InfoVis pedagogy has become an important topic for research and discussion. Little scholarship has focused directly on InfoVis education, however, and research informing curriculum design is underdeveloped. This research study aims to identify InfoVis concepts that are both important and difficult to learn. The results from this study can be used to support the curriculum development process for InfoVis programs, and to inform educational research and pedagogical practices. We are inviting you to participate in this research because you are part of a community of InfoVis educators, researchers, and practitioners. We are specifically interested in your input based on your experience teaching, learning, and/or practicing InfoVis. Your participation in this study consists of three rounds of data collection that are explained below. Throughout the three rounds your identity will be kept anonymous to other respondents (though not to the researchers). That is, you will not directly interact with other respondents and you will not know who they are, nor they will be able to identify you. Only the researchers will be able to connect your identity with your responses. Please note that all data (with and without identifiers) will be kept permanently and will be stored in a hard drive by Dr. Vieira in a locked cabinet within his office at Purdue University. Each round is expected to take approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Further, it is anticipated that there will be several weeks between each round to collate all responses, revise the instrument for the next iteration, and provide feedback to you. At the close of the third round, you will be offered the choice to receive a copy of the final report. The Delphi process provides an interactive communication structure between researchers and subject matter experts (SMEs) to develop themes, needs, and directions about a topic. This Delphi process will consist of three anonymous, iterative rounds as follows: Goal Round 1: To identify important and difficult concepts to learn in InfoVis education. Goal Round 2: To rank different levels of relevance and difficulty for each of the InfoVis concepts provided on a consolidated list. Goal Round 3: To revise the collective responses and gain consensus among the respondents. There are no foreseeable risks associated with this project, nor are there any direct benefits to participants. Current applications include environmental science and technologies, natural resources and energy, health and related life sciences, precision medicine, safety and security and business processes. Submissions are encouraged that extend the areas of use to new analytic tasks in science and technology, public health, business intelligence, financial analysis, social sciences, and other domains. Particular emphasis will be given to submissions that use visual analytics for social change discovery, analysis and communication. Submissions may include studies of visual analytics and decision support in the context of an organization (e.g., communication between analysts and policy-makers), perceptual and cognitive aspects of the analytic task, Interactive Machine Learning, and collaborative analysis using visual information systems. We are also seeking submissions on analytical methods and technologies that use interactive visualization to meet challenges posed by data, platforms, and applications for decision making and risk-based decision making: . Cognitive and social science aspects of visual decision-making environments For HICSS 2018, we encourage authors to address these themes from their own research perspectives. Authors are encouraged to bring the lens of their own background and expertise to focus on the analytics of the data itself and coordination of multiple levels of analysis, decision-making and operations to the design and evaluation of effective presentations for stakeholders. Both algorithmic "data sciences" approaches and human-centered "visualization" and "visual analytics" human-computer interface methods hold great promise for operationalizing massive datasets and streaming data in support of a broad range of human activities. Applications in basic scientific research, business analytics, health sciences, environmental science and engineering R&D explore the implications of these methods for advancement of knowledge and strategic planning. Applications in coordination, command, and control of complex human activities such as crowd and traffic management, disaster relief, law enforcement, and national and cyber security add the constraints of real-time performance and distribution of planning to the challenges faced. For this mintrack we invite computational, cognitive, and organizational perspectives on advanced data processing and interactive visualization across a range of human endeavors. CALL FOR PAPERS The 2nd Workshop on Data Systems for Interactive Analysis (DSIA 2017) http://www.interactive-analysis.org/ Monday, October 1st or 2nd, 2017. Phoenix, AZ. In conjunction with IEEE VIS 2017. *** Submission Deadline: July 31st, 2017 *** In its first edition in Chicago, DSIA drew more than 150 attendees for an exciting session with a keynote talk by Joe Hellerstein (UC Berkeley, Trifacta) and publications from both the visualization and data management communities. We’re looking forward to a vibrant program and discussion this year. DSIA brings together researchers at the intersection of databases, machine learning, and interactive visualization. These three areas have important things to say to each other. Modern data visualization depends on the cutting edge of both database and machine learning research: database researchers are exploring techniques for storing and querying massive amounts of data; machine learning techniques provide ways to discover unexpected patterns and to automate and scale well-defined analysis procedures. This workshop explores the idea that the next generation of database, machine learning, and interactive visualization systems should not be designed in isolation. For example, machine learning techniques might recommend improved data transformation and visual encoding decisions. Or, database query optimizers might take advantage of perceptual constraints, while prefetching methods reduce latency by modeling likely interactions. This workshop seeks to increase cross-pollination between these fields. LIST OF TOPICS This workshop will focus on interactive systems: techniques, methods, architecture, systems that enable the user to interactively explore and analyze large amounts of data in the back end with little or no latency. We encourage late-breaking work, research in progress, and position papers in interactive analysis, broadly construed. For example, topics of interest to the workshop include (but are not limited to): * design of database architectures for interactive analysis * novel database applications for interactive analysis * novel database techniques based on perceptual constraints and human-centered design * evaluation of database systems for interactive analysis * identify unique characteristics of database for supporting vis * communication protocols between front and back ends * techniques for data storage, retrieval, compression, transformation, sampling, and streaming * techniques for metadata generation * front-end architectures that exploit these novel back-end capabilities We are interested, more generally, in the questions that arise at the *intersection* of these systems.
