VizSec 2019 Call for Papers

*** Please visit https://vizsec.org/ for more information. *** The 16th IEEE Symposium on Visualization for Cyber Security (VizSec) is a forum that brings together researchers and practitioners from academia, government, and industry to address the needs of the cyber security community through new and insightful visualization and analysis techniques. VizSec provides an excellent venue for fostering greater exchange and new collaborations on a broad range of security- and privacy-related topics. VizSec will be held in Vancouver, Canada in conjunction with IEEE VIS, on Wednesday, October 23rd 2019. This year, VizSec will be more closely integrated with the IEEE VIS program. VizSec will take place during the main week of the conference, giving VizSec authors and attendees enhanced access to IEEE VIS, the premier forum for advances in theory, methods, and applications of visualization and visual analytics. The purpose of VizSec is to explore effective and scalable visual interfaces for security domains such as network security, computer forensics, reverse engineering, insider threat detection, cryptography, privacy, user assisted attacks prevention, compliance management, wireless security, secure coding, and penetration testing. Technical Papers ---------------- Full papers describing novel contributions in security visualization are solicited. Papers may present techniques, applications, theory, analysis, experiments, or evaluations. We encourage the submission of papers on technologies and methods that promise to improve cyber security practices, including, but not limited to: - Situation awareness and/or understanding. - Incident handling including triage, exploration, correlation, and response. - Computer forensics. - Machine learning and explainable AI for cybersecurity. - Visual analytics for cybersecurity. - Data protection & privacy. - Blockchain performance & security. - Cybersecurity in critical infrastructure. - Recording and reporting results of investigations. - Assisting proactive security configuration and deployment. - Reverse engineering and malware analysis. - Vulnerability management. - Multiple data source analysis. - Analyzing information requirements for computer network defense. - Evaluation and/or user testing of VizSec systems. - Criteria for assessing the effectiveness of cyber security visualizations (whether from a security goal perspective or a human factors perspective). - Modeling system and network behavior. - Modeling attacker and defender behavior. - Studying risk and impact of cyber attacks. - Predicting future attacks or targets. - Security metrics. - Software security. - Mobile application security. - Social networking privacy and security. - Training & education. When applicable, visualization and interaction techniques that effectively capture the insights of human analysts and/or allow analysts to collaborate efficiently are particularly desirable. Submissions including tests and evaluations of the proposed tools and techniques are also considered particularly desirable. If possible, making the data used for the tests available will also be considered positively. If you do not have real-world data to demonstrate your visualization, you may be interested in looking at the VAST Challenge data sets. Short Papers ------------ Short papers describing initial research results, concise research contributions or incremental work on the above topics, even including practical applications of security visualization, are solicited. We encourage the submission of papers discussing the introduction of cyber security visualizations into operational context, including, but not limited to: - Cases where visualization made positive contributions towards meeting operational needs. - Gaps or negative outcomes from visualization deployments. - Situations where visualization was not utilized, but could have had a positive impact. - Lessons learned from operational engagements. - Insights gained from the transition process. Cyber security practitioners from industry, as well as the research community, are encouraged to submit case studies. Posters ------- Poster submissions may showcase late-breaking results, work in progress, preliminary results, or visual representations relevant to the VizSec community. The poster program will be a great opportunity for the authors to interact with the attendees, potentially also through live demos, and solicit feedback. Accepted poster abstracts will be made available on this website. Awards ------ There will be an award for the best paper from the accepted program. This award will be given to the paper judged to have the highest overall quality as determined by the program committee. Key elements of the selection process include whether papers include evaluation, repeatable results, and open-source data or software. Authors of the best paper will be invited for submission to Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics. Both full and short papers are eligible. There will also be an award for Best Presentation and an award for Best Poster. Each award comes with a $50 USD Amazon gift card thanks to our sponsor, Two Six Labs. These awards will recognize authors’ efforts to clearly and concisely present their work to the audience. The awards will be determined by anonymous judges and given to recipients at the end of the conference. Submissions ----------- The VizSec 2019 Proceedings will be published by IEEE. Submissions must be formatted using the IEEE VGTC conference proceedings template that can be found at: http://junctionpublishing.org/vgtc/Track/vis.html. VizSec full papers are limited to 9 pages of content plus an additional 2 pages of references. Papers may be shorter than this but must make a similar contribution to a longer paper. Reviewers are not required to read the appendices or any pages past the maximum. Short papers should be at most 4 pages plus 1 page of references. Posters should be 2 page abstracts. Submissions not meeting these guidelines will be rejected without consideration of their merit. Reviews are single-blind, so authors may include names and affiliations in their submissions. Submitted papers must not substantially overlap papers that have been published or that are simultaneously submitted to a journal or a conference with proceedings. Authors of accepted papers must guarantee that their papers will be presented at the conference. We encourage new and exciting ideas that may not yet be fully tested. To take part in this session, we request an extended abstract (2 pages + 1 additional page for references) to be submitted. If a full or short paper has been accepted to the conference, you will have the option of presenting a video or demo of your work without the need for submitting the extended abstract. A good extended abstract should: Fall under the topics mentioned for the ETRA 2019 conference. Motivate the use cases of the work. Describe experiences gained in developing the tool/method. ========================================================= ABSTRACT PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS Abstracts should be 2 pages + 1 additional page for references in length and should follow preparation instructions found at: http://www.siggraph.org/learn/instructions-authors. To prepare the content of the PDF file, SIGGRAPH encourages authors to use LaTeX. When generating the PDF file, please make sure that the fonts are embedded in the PDF file. This will ensure that reviewers can view the paper without problems. The submitted abstracts do not have to be anonymized for peer review. In addition to the extended abstract, you will be asked to submit either a video or a demo description with a video as stated below. ========================================================= VIDEO PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS The video should depict your technology in action and we encourage researchers to explain in the video a) the motivation for their work, b) the specific problem being addressed, and c) the demonstrated solution to the problem. Note that the video should be self-explaining, no in-person explanation of the videos should be necessary at the conference. We highly encourage videos to include an audio track and discourage the use of background audio or music. If you feel uncomfortable recording your own voice, check the web for a text-to-speech tool to generate your audio commentary. The video should include a title slide with the title of the work, authors, affiliations, etc. at the start of the video. A submitted video should have a maximum length of 5 minutes and should not be larger than 100 MB. We recommend using MP4 format with H.264 codec and a resolution of 1280 x 720 px, at 24 to 30 frames/s. Most video production systems can encode in this format and most video applications are able to play it. If you use a different codec, you risk that reviewers might not be able to view the video clip and you will need to re-encode the video clip for the conference proceeding USB. The video should play in the VLC media player version 3.0 (freely available at http://www.videolan.org/vlc) without additional software, codecs or settings. Algorithms play an increasingly important role in shaping many aspects of our daily lives. Researchers across a wide variety of disciplines including human-computer interaction, communication, law, and computer science have debated over the ways in which algorithms govern and keep the human out of the decision making process. What if human-algorithm communication were different? What if we purposely involve humans in the algorithmic decision making pipeline? What if we support human agency and traits in building and sustaining algorithmic data and decision systems? How can the inherent values of human critical thinking and creativity be incorporated into algorithms? How can we reconcile diverse perspectives and points of view about human-algorithm communication? How can we design effective human-machine collaborations for critical analysis? The Virginia Tech Center for Human-Computer Interaction is hosting a two-day workshop, to be held April-11-12, 2019 in Blacksburg, Virginia, to find answers to these key questions pertaining to human-algorithmic interactions. The workshop aims to bring in scholarly expertise from a wide range of disciplines, including human-computer interaction, communication, law, and computer science. Therefore, a driving force behind this workshop is to encourage increased dialogue among researchers from different domains with intersecting interests in human-algorithm communication. Workshop outcomes may include system designs, best practices for ethical and responsible algorithm development, research and policy proposals, and publications and recommendations for building this area of research and practice. Keynote Speakers: * Jenna Burrell (UC-Berkeley) * Adam Perer (Carnegie Mellon) * Christian Sandvig (University of Michigan) SUBMISSIONS: We invite interested researchers to submit a 1-2 page (including references) position paper that addresses any of the workshop’s key questions. This is an AHRC funded research assistant role (34 months) to work on the physical representation of climate change and its data at Central St Martins. Apologies for cross-posting. Materializing Data, Embodying Climate Change brings together Central Saint Martins, the British Antarctic Survey and Birkbeck, University of London in a ground-breaking three-year project to produce art and design artefacts that explore how physical translations of climate data enable new experiences and cultural representations of our changing environment. Working as part of a research team, the post-holder will be responsible for producing art and design artefacts derived from environmental data resources, employing both digital fabrication and 3D printing as well as more traditional model-making approaches by using a range of materials. You will work closely with a Postdoctoral Research Fellow programmer who will produce software and data resources, and you will have responsibility for academic reporting and documentation of research (conference papers, journal articles and other outputs), in collaboration with the Principal Investigator and other core staff. EuroVA 2019 Workshop http://www.eurova.org EuroVA 2019 is the tenth international EuroVis Workshop on Visual Analytics. It will take place on Monday, June 3, 2019 in Porto, Portugal and is co-located with EuroVis 2019 (https://www.eurovis.org) Visual Analytics is a problem-solving and sense-making technology that integrates analytical computations, visual representations, and interaction. It includes the analysis of complex (massive, dynamic, uncertain, …) data and information for gaining understanding, building knowledge, and inferring insight. Visual Analytics aims at a synergistic collaboration of humans and computers mediated through interactive visual interfaces. As such, Visual Analytics is an interdisciplinary field of research, including aspects of visualization, human-computer interaction, statistics and mathematics, data management and knowledge representation, data analysis and machine learning, cognitive and perceptual sciences, and more. EuroVA 2019 is the premier workshop to present and discuss fresh ideas on new methods and theories, novel applications, designs, and studies on the use of Visual Analytics methods and systems. The workshop will accept a wide range of contributions within the broad area of Visual Analytics, including novel techniques, systems, applications, evaluation studies and methods, and theoretical foundations, as well as fresh viewpoints on future challenges and critical reflections. Proceedings will be published in EG Digital Library. As a new development this year, selected papers will be invited to submit an extended paper to a special issue of ACM TiiS. Call for Submissions EuroVA, a premiere workshop on Visual Analytics, is celebrating its 10th anniversary! The workshop seeks to attract innovative, fresh and creative ideas with a high potential of becoming significant contributions to the Visual Analytics community. We welcome a wide range of contributions within the broad area of Visual Analytics, including research papers presenting novel techniques or systems, evaluation studies and methods, and theoretical foundations, application papers, that describe success stories of Visual Analytics in practice, as well as fresh position papers expressing novel and potentially controversial viewpoints on Visual Analytics. The CDVE2019 conference, the 16th International Conference on Cooperative Design, Visualization and Engineering will be held from October 6-9, 2019 in Mallorca, Spain. You are welcome to submit unpublished papers to the conference. The conference proceedings of CDVE2019 will be published by the LNCS - Lecture Notes in Computer Science by Springer and indexed by ISI(CPCI-S), Web of Science, EI, Scopus, DBLP, ACM Digital Library. Selected papers will be invited to fully expand to be included in special issues of a couple SCI indexed journals. The topics of the paper should be within the scope of the conference.
