Hello! We are starting a new research project to learn to differentiate novices from experts in performing open ended tasks like data science as well as to teach novices to become experts by identifying differences in their action patterns. The work requires interdisciplinary skills - knowing how to understand and visualize data sets, machine learning/AI, and learning/explainability and HCI. We see opportunities to make both algorithmic and human study contributions. We’re looking for a postdoc to drive the work. We have a lot of flexibility in the research. They would mostly be working independently and could take ownership of a large project. Ideally, the postdoc would start in August for a two year position. The EuroVis Workshop on Trustworthy Visualization (TrustVis), formerly known as EuroRVVV, will be held as a co-located event with EuroVis 2019 on June 3rd in Porto, Portugal. TrustVis is a continuation of the EuroRVVV workshop, which was held six times in conjunction with EuroVis and IEEE VIS. TrustVis includes the topics covered by EuroRVVV – Reproducibility, Verification, and Validation in visualization – and also widens the scope. https://trustvis.org We use the term “trust” in a broad sense. As a user, trust in a visualization might mean that: * It shows the numbers I know from my spreadsheets (a common use case in industry) * I understand how it is showing the data and I know how to interpret it (HCI, perception, etc.) * It shows results that I can verify or validate by some means (verification, validation) * It employs methods that are based on sound research (reproducibility of research) * If I get sued for a decision I make based on this, I will be able to use it as evidence that I did nothing wrong (reproducibility of decisions) * It shows me the limits of what my data and/or models can provide (uncertainty) Topics we are looking for in the TrustVis workshop include, but are not limited to: * Verification and validation in visualization * Reproducibility of visualization methods and decision making * Ways to improve trust in visualization * Uncertainty visualization * Ways to attack visualization (adversarial visualization) We welcome short paper contributions, which will be peer-reviewed in a one-stage process by an international program committee. They will be electronically archived in the Eurographics Digital Library and are fully citable publications. A postdoc position in graph drawing and related areas is open in the graph drawing research group led by Prof. Giuseppe Di Battista at the Department of Engineering at Roma Tre University. The research group includes Fabrizio Frati, Maurizio Patrignani, and Maurizio Pizzonia as permanent members, together with several postdocs and PhD students. The postdoc position is funded by the PRIN (Research Projects of National Interest) Project "MODE" - Morphing graph drawings efficiently. The ideal candidate for the position should have a PhD in Mathematics or Computer Science and should have a background in algorithms, theoretical computer science and/or discrete mathematics, preferably with an interest in graph drawing, graph theory, and/or combinatorial geometry. The postdoc appointment is to begin in mid 2019 (September at the latest). The position is for one year, renewable for a second year. The position is full-time and research-only. MLVis 2019: Machine Learning Methods in Visualisation - 2nd Call For Papers, extended deadline https://events.uta.fi/mlvis2019/ MLVis 2019 will be a co-located workshop at EuroVis 2019 in Porto, Portugal. It aims to bring Machine Learning and Visualization researchers together in order to exchange research ideas. We solicit short papers on machine learning methods in visualisation, from both the machine learning and visualisation communities, addressing how the two technologies can be used together to provide greater insight to end users. Paper submissions for MLVis should be at most 4 pages in MLVis 2019 latex style (provided on the website), with an additional page allowed for references. Papers are to be submitted via the PCS system, link on the website. Proceedings will be published by the Eurographics Association, and be stored on the Eurographics Digital Library. Selected papers will be invited to a special issue of ACM Transactions on Interactive Intelligent Systems (TiiS). MEDIA ARTS: Histories and Futures International - low-residency – Master of Arts – Starts September 2019 Deepening praxis and critical comprehension of the digital developments in contemporary art An interdisciplinary field at the intersection of art, science, technology and the humanities, MediaArtHistories examines scientific discovery and technological innovation emerging in art praxis, as well as the genealogies of their historical development and context. At a time when digital technologies are fundamentally revolutionizing the very ways in which we communicate, interact, and perceive images, the MediaArtHistories program trains students from diverse backgrounds to critically analyze the plethora of visual media cultures of today. CONTENT Courses cover Media Art genres such as Net, Telematic and Genetic Art as well as the most recent reflections on Nano, Bio and Transgenic Art, Video Games, Computer Graphics and Animation, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and Intelligent Environments, Hacktivism and Tactical Media, Performance, Glitch Art, Hybrid Art and Robotics. MediaArtHistories offers a basis for understanding the evolutionary history of media, from historic examples such as the Laterna Magica and Mechanical Automaton of the 17th century, to computer art at the earliest stages of the Internet in the mid-Twentieth Century and the algorithmic art of today. Special attention is given to the challenges of documentation and preservation of these born-digital, ephemeral and multifarious works. Explored in depth are key methods and theory from Digital Humanities, Image Science, Media Archaeology, Sound Studies, the Intellectual History of Science & Technology, and Digital Gender Theory. Excursions, and on site faculty seminars, introduce students to the main cultural heritage institutions in the field, such as Ars Electronica and ZKM, archives such as the Archive of Digital Art (ADA www.digitalartarchive.at) festivals such as Transmediale, and the Media Art market. The program is a two-year low-residency, either 90 or 120 ECTS Master degree offered in English. In addition to individual study and project work at your home location, students gather 2-3 times a year for intense seminar modules with internationally renowned media artists and scholars.
