As per our charter, his replacement is voted upon by the VGTC community (*see details below) in an election that will begin on Nov 15th. Paul, VGTC Secretary (on behalf of the VGTC) ========== VGTC Chair Election 2021 The Visualization and Computer Graphics Technical Committee (VGTC) is electing a new chair and you are invited to cast your vote. The election period will begin on November 15, 2021 and will remain open for 30 days until December 15, 2021. As outlined in the VGTC Charter, the new Chair’s term is for two (2) years, nominally beginning July 1. This webpage contains information about the candidates, instructions for becoming eligible to vote (and checking eligibility), and the role of the VGTC and the VGTC Chair. CANDIDATES As per the VGTC charter, the Directors and current VGTC Chair nominated two candidates. The Directors solicited names and encouraged people to apply, sometimes by directly approaching potential candidates at workshops. The Directors then went through the list of candidates, prioritized it, and had one-on-one conversations with the top candidates to answer questions and encourage them to run for the election. The VGTC is the Visualization and Graphics Technical Committee, the governance body that oversees and sponsors all IEEE visualization and virtual reality conferences including VIS, VR, ISMAR, Pacific Vis, LDAV, BioVis, and EuroVis (as a co-sponsor). The VGTC is the main interface for these research communities with the IEEE Computer Society, and also maintains close ties with the publications TVCG (Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics) and CG&A (Computer Graphics and Applications). The VGTC fulfills many important roles including: approval and oversight of conferences, symposia, and workshops; oversight of publications through interactions with the IEEE CS Publications Board; getting involved in policy and budget decisions at the IEEE CS-level that affect the research community; and awarding the IEEE VGTC Awards. WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE VGTC CHAIR? The VGTC Chair directs the VGTC and oversees the VGTC budget while also advocating to the upper levels of IEEE on policy decisions. The VGTC Chair is the only elected position within VGTC that is determined directly by the membership. The Chair has the authority to directly appoint many positions including most of the voting members of the VGTC Executive Committee, VIS Executive Committee, and the VIS, VR, and ISMAR steering committees. After the Chair term ends, the Chair joins other previous Chairs on the VGTC Executive Committee as a VGTC Director. The successful candidates will contribute to “Narrating Complexity: Exploring Multi-Actor Timelines”, a collaborative project between King’s College London and the University of Oxford, funded by EPSRC. Project overview: “Narrating Complexity” is a multi-disciplinary project, with the ambitious goal of advancing the state-of-the-art in static and interactive displays of multi-actor timelines – that is datasets where a long series of individual events are captured, involving many separate actors interacting across time. This project will address the technical challenges involved in the formal definition of such timelines, drawing on two separate datasets to capture the underlying similarities between them – one taken from social media such as Twitter and Facebook – and the other from formal decision-making processes involving negotiation, for example, legislative assemblies (as described in the Quill Platform https://www.quillproject.net/) This project is conducted in collaboration with the Quill Project at the University of Oxford. The Quill Project, which provides use cases for the project such as the formal discussions of a legislative setting (for example, the European Union Withdrawal Acts (Brexit legislation)). The candidate will be responsible for conducting research around data visualization to aid in the understanding and presenting time-sequence data, particularly data consisting of many actors interacting over a long period. Tasks will involve structuring a design space, designing visualizations, developing compression and filtering algorithms of timelines, developing a framework and software for human-in-the-loop interactive visual analytics that will improve comprehension, analysis, and story-presentation of the information captured both from social media and data sets derived from formal decision-making processes. The candidate will collaborate with other RAs working on the project and may be involved in the co-supervision of Ph.D. and Master's students. The post holder will work closely with Dr Alfie Abdul-Rahman at the Department of Informatics, King’s College London, and project partner at the University of Oxford. **VISUALIZATION SCIENTIST (3D/VR) POSITION AT KAUST VISUALIZATION CORE LAB** The KAUST Visualization Core Lab (KVL) is seeking a highly motivated and collaborative scientist with experience working in virtual and augmented reality (VR and AR) to build cutting-edge interactive immersive visualization workflows. The scientist also develops solutions for the effective visualization and exploration of large scientific datasets on a variety of ultra-high resolution tiled-displays and VR environments such as CAVE, semi-immersive display walls, head mounted displays, and AR devices. KVL advances the KAUST mission by providing cutting-edge visualization and data science services; collaborating with domain researchers to accelerate discoveries through large-data visualization, machine learning and data science; and supporting the needs of KAUST and in-Kingdom entities by providing access to and training on state-of-the-art visualization hardware and software for scientific discovery. As a member of the KAUST Core Labs, the scientist will work in close collaboration with multiple labs and other stakeholders. They will provide training and support for students and researchers on VR/AR software and hardware facilities in the lab, participate in and organize training seminars and workshops, and provide student mentoring and support in collaboration with KAUST faculty, as appropriate. Major Responsibilities 1. Design immersive visualization workflows resulting from data produced by various facilities at KAUST, e.g., from simulations done at the KAUST supercomputing facilities, image stacks and 3D volumes produced by microscopes (SEM/cryo/TEM/confocal) and other imaging facilities (CT/micro-CT), ocean and environment data collected by ships and AUV's, etc. 2. Propose, evaluate, design, deploy/implement, and test new immersive solutions, pipelines, software and hardware 3. Provide support and expertise in 3D scientific visualization, image segmentation & 3D reconstruction, and AR/VR solutions to research endeavors across campus. 4. Set up custom immersive visualization hardware and software systems based on project requirements 5. Work collaboratively with the team and external vendors to maintain and upgrade existing VR systems Qualifications & Competencies 1. Ph.D. degree in computer science or related field with demonstrated relevant expertise 2. Familiarity and experience with advanced tools, such as Unity3D/UNREAL Engine, AVIZO, Paraview, MeshLab, ilastik/FIJI, etc.; 3D authoring tools such as Maya/Blender; and large-scale VR systems, like CAVE, immersive display walls, and HMD-based VR systems 3. Strong background in programming languages like C/C++/C# and JavaScript, Linux-based operating systems, and interactive graphics, e.g., 2D/3D graphics, image processing, and advanced rendering techniques 4. Experience in designing reinforcement learning solutions on VR platforms, VR/AR application design, image segmentation, 3D volume visualization, 3D geometry conversion, mesh simplification, and 3D reconstruction 5. Excellent oral and written communication in English 6. Proven ability to work with minimal supervision in a multidisciplinary environment 7.
