Visual Quality Metrics (VQM) supervised by Dr Michael Behrisch * The aim of this project is to create next-generation Visual Quality Metrics and embed them into knowledge generation processes. VQMs are innovative visual feature and pattern descriptors that mimic the human’s powerful cognition and perception system; they (partially) automate the cognitively demanding task of finding interpretable visualizations. Embedded into Visual Analytics (VA) systems, VQMs will guide to primary domain/task specific visual patterns, while monitoring the progress for convergence and cognitive biases. This multidisciplinary project unites computer sciences with cognitive science insights. It builds on previous research, which demonstrates that guided visual pattern exploration raises trust and confidence in complex analytical scenarios. The novel VQM-enabled VA systems will have a far-reaching impact across sciences—from medicine to engineering, biology to physics—where Researchers are increasingly making use of big data. VQM-enabled VA will allow these domain experts to access complex datasets without data science expertise. This project will lay the foundation for a visual pattern-focused analysis, which in turn will be the key enabler for the user-centric, multi-faceted, and objective data exploration of the future. Project-specific requirements (basic knowledge in one or more of the following areas will be considered an advantage): web-technologies and scalable data analysis platforms, visual data analytics, data visualization, machine learning, and AI. Data Visualization for Decision Making (DEC) supervised by Dr Evanthia Dimara * There are decisions neither humans nor computers can make alone. Information Visualization leverages the human vision system -- the single most powerful system in our brain-- to support reasoning over complex information. The goal of this PhD project is to investigate how visualization systems can better support decision making with data in use cases where pure AI solutions appear inadequate, while the human intuition alone leads to biased judgements. While visualization research originates in computer science, this project opts to incorporate methodologies from other disciplines that study decisions, such as economics, psychology, cognitive, or management science. Visualisation solutions will further build on findings derived from empirical research, extracting user behaviour, expectations, and needs via both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Such findings are essential to ensure that the visual analytic systems do benefit the decision-makers and ultimately gain insights on how to refine them. Algorithms for Network Visualization (ANV) supervised by Dr Tamara Mchedlidze * One of the most common and intuitive network visualizations are so-called node-link diagrams. In these diagrams, nodes are depicted by geometric shapes such as circles or rectangles and links are represented by lines or curves connecting corresponding nodes. Algorithms for the construction of node-link diagrams are based on quality metrics, which are heuristic measures that specify how readable and appealing a visualization is. The goal of this project is to advance the state-of-the-art in network visualization algorithms. In particular, the goal of the PhD thesis is twofold. On the one hand, the aim is to develop network quality metrics that closely match the human perception of aesthetics, readability, and clarity of node-link diagrams. On the other hand, the goal is to develop algorithms that construct node-link diagrams by optimizing the newly developed quality metrics. Project-specific requirements (basic knowledge in one or more of the following areas will be considered an advantage): design and analysis of algorithms, combinatorial optimization, machine learning, experimental evaluation of algorithms, empirical evaluation of visualization methods, graph theory, computational geometry, network information theory. As a PhD candidate in these fully funded 5-year projects, you will primarily perform research and publish your results in scientific papers in international conferences and journals, and complete a PhD thesis. A EuroVis short paper describes a more focused and concise research contribution and is likely to have a smaller -- yet still significant -- scope of contribution than a full paper. Short papers draw from the same paper types as full papers, as well as the same list of suggested topics. Graph Drawing and Network Visualization are motivated by applications where it is crucial to visually analyze and interact with relational datasets. Examples of such application areas include data science, social sciences, web computing, information systems, biology, geography, business intelligence, information security, or software engineering. GD has been the main annual event in this area for more than 20 years. Its focus is on combinatorial and algorithmic aspects of graph drawing as well as the design of network visualization systems and interfaces. Researchers and practitioners working on any aspects of graph drawing and network visualization are invited to contribute papers and posters and to participate in the symposium and the graph drawing contest. GD2021 will be held (hopefully) at Tuebingen from September 14 to 17, 2021 with a reception on the evening of September 14. A pre-conference PhD school is planned for September 13-14, 2021. In the event that a physical conference will not be possible, GD2021 will, like GD2020, be held virtually. Details of the exact format of the venue (onsite, online, hybrid) will be announced before the submission deadline. Regardless of the format, we are committed to offering remote participation for both presenters and the audience. PAPERS ------ We invite authors to submit papers describing original research of theoretical or practical significance to graph drawing and network visualization. Regular papers must be submitted explicitly to one of two distinct tracks. Papers submitted to one track will not compete with papers submitted to the other track. Track 1: Combinatorial and algorithmic aspects ---------------------------------------------- This track is mainly devoted to fundamental graph drawing advances, such as combinatorial aspects and algorithm design. The range of topics for this track includes (but is not limited to): * Design and analysis of graph drawing algorithms * Geometric and topological graph theory * Computational topology of graphs on surfaces * Geometric network design and optimization * Geometric computing Track 2: Experimental, applied, and network visualization aspects ----------------------------------------------------------------- This track is mainly devoted to the practical aspects of graph drawing, such as the development of network visualization systems and interfaces in different application areas. Papers in this category will be assigned a shorter time for presentation during the conference. Submission format ----------------- All submissions must be formatted using the appropriate LaTeX style file, either gd-llncs.cls for long papers or gd-llncs-short.cls for short papers; these are derived from the style file used for the conference series Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) provided by Springer. The default margins and fonts must not be modified; in particular, the use of packages such as times.sty is not allowed. Submissions that do not comply with this format risk rejection without consideration of their merits. To promote inclusion of figures in the submitted papers, submissions will have a strict number of lines limit. Regular papers must have at most 400 lines, (excluding references and figures) and at most 14 pages (excluding references). Short papers must have at most 225 lines (excluding references and figures) and at most 7 pages (excluding references). The claims of the paper should be fully substantiated. If this information does not fit within the page limits, the authors should include it in a clearly marked appendix, whose length is not constrained and which the reviewers may read at their own discretion. All submissions will be handled through EasyChair at the web site https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=gd2021 Posters & Contest ----------------- Submissions of posters on graph drawing, network visualization, and related areas are solicited. The poster session will provide a forum for the communication of late-breaking research results (which may also appear elsewhere) to the GD community. Authors of posters should prepare an abstract (up to 2 pages in the LNCS style) that must be submitted together with the poster itself. PUBLICATION ----------- All accepted papers (including the two-page poster abstracts) will appear in the conference proceedings, published by Springer in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series. The LNCS proceedings will be made freely accessible to the GD community upon publication and openly accessible to anyone after four years. Authors will be required to submit their accepted papers to the arXiv repository, in order to provide immediate and unrestricted open access to them. The self-archived arXiv papers shall consist of the LNCS proceedings version (identical, except for possibly changed references to the appendix resp. the arXiv version) plus an optional clearly marked appendix. This appendix could contain a long version of the entire paper or proofs that have been omitted from the main text. Subsequent submissions of revised versions of the paper to the arXiv (known as arXiv "replacements") are allowed. Upon submission of the camera-ready version of an accepted paper, the authors will be required to specify the arXiv identifier associated with the paper for inclusion in a conference index, which will be also published in the arXiv repository. ACM ISS 2021: Call for participation (CfP): Papers ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ACM ISS 2021 has two separate reviewing rounds with separate deadlines. This is the call for the winter round. ISS 2021 Papers Winter Round: Important Dates AoE (Anywhere on Earth) Submission due: February 28 Notifications to authors: April 23 Revisions due: May 21 Final decisions to authors: June 9 Camera-ready due: October 1 ISS 2021: November 14-17 There will be another call for ACM ISS 2021, also called the papers summer round. Important dates for the papers summer round are presented further down. ACM Interactive Surfaces and Spaces (ACM ISS) is the premier venue for research on the design, development and use of new and emerging interactive surface technologies and interactive spaces. ACM ISS welcomes original, high-quality research and industry contributions that advance the state-of-the-art in the area of interactive surfaces, interactive spaces and novel interface technologies. Beyond our traditional scope – i.e. interactive tabletops, large displays, multi-display systems, mobile and mini devices – we also encourage contributions focused on the use of space and technology around us to bridge the gap between our digital and everyday lives, such as interactive 3D spaces, on-body sensors, interactive art or interactive architecture. We also encourage contributions focused on understanding individual and group needs related to interactive surfaces and interactive spaces, and the impact on individuals and groups of these technologies. We embrace innovations in a wide variety of areas including design, software, hardware, understanding of use, and applications or deployments of such interactive systems. ISS 2021 will be a hybrid event: Accepted papers are invited to present at the conference, and authors can choose whether or not they wish to present. Because of the evolving situation with COVID-19 and the difficulties of running a physical in-person conference, ACM ISS will allow remote participation. While we do not know what the exact format of the conference will be, we will ensure everyone can present their papers at ISS. Publication model: PACMHCI journal: Starting last year, ISS switched to a journal model of publication. This year, there will be two submission rounds: winter round and summer round, with separate deadlines. Papers published by the Proceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction (PACMHCI), https://dl.acm.org/journal/pacmhci , accepted in both rounds will be invited for presentation at the ISS 2021 conference. The conference retains its workshop, poster, and demo tracks, which will have their own publication outlet. The call for workshops, posters, and demos will be included in the summer round. Submissions will be done through http://new.precisionconference.com Submissions: Submissions to PACMHCI ISS should present original and mature research work. High-quality, elaborated case studies and practice reports with generalizable findings will also be considered. Papers should be written using a template provided by PACMHCI, https://dl.acm.org/journal/pacmhci/submission-templates . Submissions should be anonymized. Primarily, this means that submissions must remove all author and institutional information from the title and header area of the first page. Author information should also be removed from submitted supplementary materials, in particular, videos. Submissions that do not do so may be rejected without review. Furthermore, all references must remain intact. If you previously published a paper and your current submission builds on that work, the complete reference with the author's name must appear in the references. Authors must refer to their previous work in the third person (e.g., “We build on prior work by Smith et al. [X] but generalize their algorithm to new settings.”) and avoid blank references (e.g., “12. REMOVED FOR REVIEWING”). Further suppression of identity in the body of the paper (for example, in an Acknowledgements section), while encouraged, is left to the authors’ discretion. Paper Length: We recommend a page length in the new format of between 5-15 pages + any additional pages for references. There are no length restrictions on papers, however, reviewers will put the length of any submitted paper in context of the provided contribution when making decisions about acceptance and revisions. Revisions: The associate editors will make decisions for any submitted papers as either accepted, minor revisions, major revisions, or rejected. These notifications will then be sent to authors. If the initial decision is "minor revisions", the authors will revise their paper within this round. After the revised paper is submitted, the final decisions will be sent to authors a few weeks later. If the initial decision is "major revisions", the paper must be submitted in the next round to guarantee treatment as a revision, meaning that the same primary and secondary board members will be assigned to continuously handle the submission. Submissions requiring "major revisions" will not submit their revision within the current round, to allow extra time for any significant new work, such as conducting a new evaluation, before acceptance is possible. This means that papers accepted in the winter or summer round will be able to present their paper at ISS of the same year. A paper submitted in the summer round that received a major revision decision will not present at ISS of the same year but might present at ISS of the next year if accepted in the following winter round. ACM ETRA is the premier forum for Eye Tracking Research and Applications. The aim of ETRA is to bring together researchers and practitioners from across fields with the common goal of continuing to move eye tracking research forward. The symposium presents advances and innovations in oculomotor research, gaze tracking systems, eye tracking applications, gaze-based interaction, and eye movement data analysis.
