Thank you and kind regards, Katy Bӧrner, Lisel Record, & Todd Theriault Curators, Mapping Science exhibit, http://scimaps.org 2022 Call for Macroscopes Background and Goals The Places & Spaces: Mapping Science exhibit is designed to open people’s minds and hearts to the value, complexity, and beauty of science and technology. We are inviting authors of interactive data visualizations, also called macroscopes, to submit their work for inclusion in the Places & Spaces: Mapping Science exhibit. IMPORTANT DATES Submissions due: Feb 15, 2022 Mapmakers notified: Apr 1, 2022 Submit final entries: May 30, 2022 Ready for display: Aug 31, 2022 Macroscopes are software tools that help us focus on patterns in data that are too large or complex to see with the naked eye. The idea of the macroscope was explored in 1979 by Joël de Rosnay in a book titled The Macroscope: A New World Scientific System [1]. To meet the challenges posed by the rapidly increasing abundance, diversity, and complexity of information, de Rosnay proposed the macroscope, a tool for observing “what is at once too great, too slow, and too complex for our eyes.” Like microscopes and telescopes, macroscopes can startle us when we point them at objects we thought we already knew. Through their lens, we may see familiar structures in a new light or gain a fresh perspective on an old process. This year’s call for submissions to the Places & Spaces exhibit celebrates the decidedly scopic feature of macroscopes. Simply put, we are looking for interactive visualizations that disrupt our old habits of seeing, that challenge our common patterns of perception in order that we might see something anew. To do so, they may use novel datasets and algorithms or employ innovative user interface designs. Places & Spaces is a traveling exhibit that currently features 100 maps and 28 interactive macroscopes from a wide range of disciplines. Since 2005, the exhibit has traveled to 28 countries and appeared in various formats at over 382 venues and events, including the Davos Economic Forum, National Academy of Sciences, and the New York Public Library. Submission Details Interactive data visualizations designed for desktop, mobile, touch-enabled, and/or large (e.g., tiled wall) devices are all welcome. To be incorporated into the exhibit kiosk, macroscopes must be 1) web-based, 2) touch-enabled, 3) allowed to run inside an iframe element, 4) have CORS enabled for http://idemo.cns. iu.edu, and 5) served over HTTPS. Macroscopes will be deployed on a 46” multi-touch 1920 x 1080 display running Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and Chrome 91. Each macroscope should be fully functional for at least two years. Macroscopes might be deployed using other hardware, please contact the curatorial team to discuss options. Macroscope authors should be available to work with the exhibit staff over a period of three months to prepare the macroscopes for public display and travel. Each entry must be submitted by February 15, 2022, and needs to include: * Title of macroscope * Author(s) name, email address, affiliation, mailing address, and social media handles * Link to online site that features the macroscope tool or to executable code * Macroscope tool description (300 words max): user group and needs served, data used, data * analysis performed, visualization techniques applied, and main insights gained. Please also outline * the vision that this new macroscope embodies. * References to relevant publications or online sites that should be cited, links to related projects or * works * Describe the impact your data visualization has had on public awareness, social policy, or political * action. * Submit entries via https://forms.gle/wPr5X16Cm5MwDb7c9 Review Process Submissions will be reviewed and evaluated by the exhibit advisory board (listed below) in terms of their: * Scientific rigor * Value as a tool for data exploration * Ability to provide new, actionable insights * Relevance for a general audience Final Submission Authors of winning entries will be contacted by April 1, 2022 and invited to submit final entries by May 30, 2022. Each final entry consists of: * Link to online site that features the macroscope tool or link to executable code. This must be a * fully self-contained version of the macroscope that can operate without any outside links and * without opening new windows. * Biographies for all authors (100 words each) * High resolution author portraits that are no smaller than 360 x 450 pixels, or 1.2” x 1.5” at 300 dpi. * Signed copyright and reproduction agreement Authors are welcome to use the expertise and resources of the exhibit curators and designers. FINAL CALL FOR PAPERS Special Issue on Parameterized and Approximation Algorithms in Graph Drawing of Journal of Graph Algorithms and Applications (JGAA) Dear Colleagues, It is a great pleasure to invite you to submit a paper to the Special Issue of Journal of Graph Algorithms and Applications (JGAA) on "Parameterized and Approximation Algorithms in Graph Drawing". In the course of a few decades, the fields of parameterized complexity and approximation algorithms have emerged as distinguished research areas providing an impressive collection of broadly usable methodologies and remarkable theoretical and practical contributions. These branches of complexity theory provide a framework of powerful techniques that allow us to tackle hard (often NP-hard) problems, by either considering restricted graph classes or by seeking solutions "close" to the optimal ones. Moreover, in recent years, the research efforts in these two fields have converged into the study of the unified notion of parameterized approximation algorithms. This includes, but is not limited to, theoretical and combinatorial aspects that arise at the interface of graph drawing with computational and discrete geometry, combinatorial optimization, visual computing, VLSI and computer-aided design, computer graphics, and information visualization. The range of topics includes: - fixed-parameter tractable and approximation algorithms - (parameterized) inapproximability - W[k]-hardness - parameterized approximations - (lossy) kernelization - fine-grained complexity of approximations - subexponential-time approximations Other topics that are not listed but that might be of interest for the study of parameterized and approximation algorithms in graph drawing will also be evaluated. To bridge the gap between theory and practice, we welcome contributions dealing with techniques and data structures to obtain efficient parameterized and approximation algorithms to tackle graph-visualization problems as well as implementations, experimental evaluations, and algorithm engineering issues of approximation, parameterized, and kernelization algorithms that emerge in practice. Paper Submission ================ We invite authors to submit papers describing original research of theoretical or practical significance concerned with parameterized and approximation algorithms in graph drawing and network visualization until March 25, 2022. We aim for a fast reviewing process in order to have this special issue available at the end of 2022. Papers should be submitted to the editors of the special issue in PDF format. All communications between the editors, authors, and reviewers will be done by email unless otherwise requested by the author or reviewer. All submissions must be formatted using the LaTeX style file of Journal of Graph Algorithms and Applications (http://jgaa.info/authors.jsp) The default margins and fonts must not be modified. Ultimately, the research objective is to allow eye tracking data to be effectively interpreted in terms of the observer’s decision-making and cognitive processes. To achieve this, it is necessary to draw upon our current understanding of gaze-behavior across various and related fields, from vision and cognition to visualization. We invite proposals for half-day or full-day workshops. These workshops will be held before the main conference, and take place at the main conference venue. We also invite proposals for tutorials of 1.5 hours in length. Tutorials are expected to address topics that are of interest to the Diagrams 2022 conference attendees. Tutorials differ from workshops in that they do not solicit contributions from attendees. Previously, attendees have particularly enjoyed tutorials that are interactive and spark debate. Therefore, we think designing audio-visual interfaces will help human analysts understand their data even better in the future. The 3rd Workshop on Audio-Visual Analytics continues building a community (AVAC) of researchers interested in combining information visualization and sonification. The first two workshops were held interactively at the Audio Mostly 2021 and the IEEE VIS 2021 conferences. The third edition at AVI 2022 will be the first one with the possibility to submit short papers or position papers. The workshop will be held in hybrid format (confirmation pending) and is part of the International Conference on Advanced Visual Interfaces (AVI). Submitted papers should discuss both visual and auditory representations of data to be interpreted by humans. Ideally, the contribution can be categorized to one of the following topics: Theory, Tools, Evaluation, Design, and Accessibility.  All papers must be original and not simultaneously submitted to another journal or conference. The following paper categories are welcome: - Short papers describe work in progress with respect to the workshop focus. - Position papers are problem discussions or statements describing the author’s relevant experience and ideas in regards to methods and methodologies for visualization and sonification research, and in particular the focus topic of the workshop. Position papers and short papers should be 2-4 pages long with additional pages for references only and prepared according to two-colum CEUR-ART template. Word / Latex / Overleaf-Templates can be downloaded via the workshop website. The workshop program committee will review the submitted papers, and select 5-8 papers for presentation at the workshop based on their quality and relevance to the workshop topics. Position papers will be selected according to their importance and relevance for the workshop topics, and how well they will fit the planned discussions. This position (ref. LiU-2022-00141) is part of a joint collaboration between the two largest research programs in Sweden, the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) and the SciLifeLab and Wallenberg National Program for Data-Driven Life Science (DDLS), with the ultimate goal of solving ground-breaking research questions across disciplines. The successful candidate will become member of an interdisciplinary research project entitled “Visual Analytics for Enhancing Quality and Trust in Genome-wide Expression Clustering and Annotation”, where the Information Visualization group at Linköping University (LiU) and the Systems Biology group at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) work closely together. There is a need for a functional genome-wide annotation of the protein-coding genes to get a deeper understanding of mammalian biology. The new data-driven strategy to be developed in the project is based on interpretable unsupervised learning (e.g., dimensionality reduction and clustering) of whole-body co-expression patterns, supported by state-of-the-art visual analytics. Interactive guiding of the clustering process will be used to explore the gene expression landscape in humans and other mammalian species, and to create a whole-body map of all protein-coding genes in all major cell types, tissues and organs. This will allow for the improvement of the quality of the classification of all protein-coding genes according to their whole-body co-expression patterns, resulting in every gene being annotated to a unique expression cluster together with other genes with a similar body-wide pattern. The focus of this PostDoc position at LiU will be on research and development of an interactive and interpretable (human-in-the-loop) clustering strategy to reach these goals. The successful candidate will develop visual analytics approaches that provide fine-grained quality analysis of the clustering processes and better interpretation/annotation of clusters.
