Thank you and kind regards, Katy Bӧrner, Lisel Record, & Todd Theriault Curators, Mapping Science exhibit, http://scimaps.org 2022 Call for Macroscopes Background and Goals The Places & Spaces: Mapping Science exhibit is designed to open people’s minds and hearts to the value, complexity, and beauty of science and technology. We are inviting authors of interactive data visualizations, also called macroscopes, to submit their work for inclusion in the Places & Spaces: Mapping Science exhibit. IMPORTANT DATES Submissions due: Feb 15, 2022 Mapmakers notified: Apr 1, 2022 Submit final entries: May 30, 2022 Ready for display: Aug 31, 2022 Macroscopes are software tools that help us focus on patterns in data that are too large or complex to see with the naked eye. The idea of the macroscope was explored in 1979 by Joël de Rosnay in a book titled The Macroscope: A New World Scientific System [1]. To meet the challenges posed by the rapidly increasing abundance, diversity, and complexity of information, de Rosnay proposed the macroscope, a tool for observing “what is at once too great, too slow, and too complex for our eyes.” Like microscopes and telescopes, macroscopes can startle us when we point them at objects we thought we already knew. Through their lens, we may see familiar structures in a new light or gain a fresh perspective on an old process. This year’s call for submissions to the Places & Spaces exhibit celebrates the decidedly scopic feature of macroscopes. Simply put, we are looking for interactive visualizations that disrupt our old habits of seeing, that challenge our common patterns of perception in order that we might see something anew. To do so, they may use novel datasets and algorithms or employ innovative user interface designs. Places & Spaces is a traveling exhibit that currently features 100 maps and 28 interactive macroscopes from a wide range of disciplines. Since 2005, the exhibit has traveled to 28 countries and appeared in various formats at over 382 venues and events, including the Davos Economic Forum, National Academy of Sciences, and the New York Public Library. Submission Details Interactive data visualizations designed for desktop, mobile, touch-enabled, and/or large (e.g., tiled wall) devices are all welcome. To be incorporated into the exhibit kiosk, macroscopes must be 1) web-based, 2) touch-enabled, 3) allowed to run inside an iframe element, 4) have CORS enabled for http://idemo.cns. iu.edu, and 5) served over HTTPS. Macroscopes will be deployed on a 46” multi-touch 1920 x 1080 display running Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and Chrome 91. Each macroscope should be fully functional for at least two years. Macroscopes might be deployed using other hardware, please contact the curatorial team to discuss options. Macroscope authors should be available to work with the exhibit staff over a period of three months to prepare the macroscopes for public display and travel. Each entry must be submitted by February 15, 2022, and needs to include: * Title of macroscope * Author(s) name, email address, affiliation, mailing address, and social media handles * Link to online site that features the macroscope tool or to executable code * Macroscope tool description (300 words max): user group and needs served, data used, data * analysis performed, visualization techniques applied, and main insights gained. Please also outline * the vision that this new macroscope embodies. * References to relevant publications or online sites that should be cited, links to related projects or * works * Describe the impact your data visualization has had on public awareness, social policy, or political * action. * Submit entries via https://forms.gle/wPr5X16Cm5MwDb7c9 Review Process Submissions will be reviewed and evaluated by the exhibit advisory board (listed below) in terms of their: * Scientific rigor * Value as a tool for data exploration * Ability to provide new, actionable insights * Relevance for a general audience Final Submission Authors of winning entries will be contacted by April 1, 2022 and invited to submit final entries by May 30, 2022. Each final entry consists of: * Link to online site that features the macroscope tool or link to executable code. This must be a * fully self-contained version of the macroscope that can operate without any outside links and * without opening new windows. * Biographies for all authors (100 words each) * High resolution author portraits that are no smaller than 360 x 450 pixels, or 1.2” x 1.5” at 300 dpi. * Signed copyright and reproduction agreement Authors are welcome to use the expertise and resources of the exhibit curators and designers. The macroscopes are expected to be ready for display by August 31, 2022. The IEEE VGTC Visualization Awards program recognizes and honors individuals who have made a significant contribution to the community through their research and/or service. Furthermore, we seek out nominations of individuals that enable us to recognize both the diversity of individuals, as well as diversity of contributions, from the community at large. The VGTC Visualization Awards Program has five awards plus induction to the IEEE VGTC Visualization Academy: VGTC Visualization Dissertation Award The Doctoral Dissertation Award recognizes outstanding academic research and development in the field. VGTC Visualization Significant New Researcher Award The VGTC Significant New Researcher Award recognizes an individual who has made significant recent research contributions in the field. VGTC Visualization Technical Achievement Award The Technical Achievement Award is given each year to recognize an individual for a seminal technical achievement and/or significant contribution in the field. VGTC Visualization Lifetime Achievement Award The Lifetime Achievement Award is given to an individual to honor that person’s lifetime contribution to the field. VGTC Visualization Service Award The IEEE VGTC Service Award recognizes extraordinary service to the community through the IEEE VGTC and/or the IEEE VGTC Sponsored Conferences and Symposia. VGTC Visualization Academy Selection The IEEE VGTC Visualization Academy is a prestigious academy that highlights the accomplishments of the leaders in the field. Nominations, except Dissertation award, should contain the name of the person nominated, the awards for which they are nominated, the short citation for the award, and a summary that carefully addresses the criteria below while not exceeding 600 words. Conference on Database Theory (EDBT/ICDT 2023) Information Visualization is nowadays one of the cornerstones of Data Science, turning the abundance of Big Data being produced through modern systems into actionable knowledge. Indeed, the Big Data era has realized the availability of voluminous datasets that are dynamic, noisy and heterogeneous in nature. Transforming a data-curious user into someone who can access and analyze that data is even more burdensome now for a great number of users with little or no support and expertise on the data processing part. Thus, the area of data visualization, visual exploration and analysis has gained great attention recently, calling for joint action from different research areas from the HCI, Computer graphics and Data management and mining communities. In this respect, several traditional problems from these communities such as efficient data storage, querying & indexing for enabling visual analytics, new ways for visual presentation of massive data, efficient interaction and personalization techniques that can fit to different user needs are revisited. The modern exploration and visualization systems should nowadays offer scalable techniques to efficiently handle billion objects datasets, limiting the visual response in a few milliseconds along with mechanisms for information abstraction, sampling and summarization for addressing problems related to visual information over-plotting. Further, they must encourage user comprehension offering customization capabilities to different user-defined exploration scenarios and preferences according to the analysis needs. Overall, the challenge is to offer self-service visual analytics, i.e. enable data scientists and business analysts to visually gain value and insights out of the data as rapidly as possible, minimizing the role of IT-expert in the loop. The BigVis workshop aims at addressing the above challenges and issues by providing a forum for researchers and practitioners to discuss, exchange, and disseminate their work. An emerging field with AI is eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (xAI), devoted to the production of intelligent systems that allow humans to understand their inferences, assessments, prediction, recommendation and decisions. Initially devoted to designing post-hoc methods for explainability, eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (xAI) is rapidly expanding its boundaries to neuro-symbolic methods for producing self-interpretable models. Research has also shifted the focus on the structure of explanations and human-centred Artificial Intelligence since the ultimate users of interactive technologies are humans. The World Conference on Explainable Artificial Intelligence (xAI 2023) is an annual event that aims to bring together researchers, academics, and professionals, promoting the sharing and discussion of knowledge, new perspectives, experiences, and innovations in the field of Explainable Artificial Intelligence (xAI). The contact author must provide the following information: paper title, all author names, affiliations, postal address, e-mail address, and at least three keywords. The conference will not require a strict page number, as we believe authors have different writing styles and would like to produce scientific material differently. However, the following types of articles are admitted: full articles between 12 and 24 pages (including references) short articles between 6 and 12 pages (including references) extended abstracts between 3 and 6 pages (including references) Full articles should report on original and substantial contributions of lasting value, and the work should concern the theory and/or practice of Explainable Artificial Intelligence (xAI). Moreover, manuscripts showcasing the innovative use of xAI methods, techniques, and approaches and exploring the benefits and challenges of applying xAI-based technology in real-life applications and contexts are welcome. Evaluations of proposed solutions and applications should be commensurate with the claims made in the article. Full articles should reflect more complex innovations or studies and have a more thorough discussion of related work. Research procedures and technical methods should be presented sufficiently to ensure scrutiny and reproducibility. We recognise that user data may be proprietary or confidential, therefore we encourage sharing (anonymized, cleaned) data sets, data collection procedures, and code. Results and findings should be communicated clearly, and implications of the contributions for xAI as a field and beyond should be explicitly discussed. Shorter articles should generally report on advances that can be described, set into context, and evaluated concisely. These articles are not ‘work-in-progress’ reports but complete studies focused on smaller but complete research work, simple to describe. For these articles, the discussion of related work and contextualisation in the wider body of knowledge can be smaller than that of full articles. Extended abstracts are not simply long abstracts. It should contain the definition of a problem and the presentation of a solution, comparisons to related work, and other details expected in a research manuscript but not in an abstract. An extended abstract is a research article whose ideas and significance can be understood in less than an hour. Producing an extended abstract can be more demanding than producing a full or short research article. Some things that can be omitted from an extended abstract, such as future work, details of proofs or implementation that should seem plausible to reviewers, and ramifications not relevant to the key ideas of the abstract. It should also contain enough bibliographic references to follow the main argument of the proposed research. Anonymity for review The submitted article (a .pdf) must be anonymous, given that the conference uses a double-blind<http://xaiworldconference.org/review-process/> review process. Therefore, authors must omit their names and affiliations in the submitted .pdf file and avoid obvious identifying statements. For instance, citations to the author’s prior work should be made in the third person. Failure to anonymize your submission could result in desk rejection. Ethical & Human Subjects Considerations The conference organisers expect authors to discuss the ethical considerations and the impact of the presented work and/or its intended application, where appropriate. Additionally, all authors must comply with ethical standards and regulatory guidelines associated with human subjects research, including using personally identifiable data and research involving human participants. Manuscripts reporting on human subjects research must include a statement identifying any regulatory review the research is subject to (and identifying the form of approval provided) or explaining the lack of required review. Further style instructions We ask the authors to start the reference section on a new page. Appendices count toward the page limit. Supplementary material, if any, should be linked to an external source using an anonymized URL. Review process All articles submitted within the deadlines and according to the guidelines will be subjected to a double-blind review. Papers that are out of scope, incomplete, or lack sufficient evidence to support the basic claims may be rejected without full review. Furthermore, reviewers will be asked to comment on whether the length is appropriate for the contribution. Each of the submitted articles will be reviewed by at least three members of the Scientific Committee. After completion of the review process, the authors will be informed about the acceptance or rejection of the submitted work. The reviewers’ comments will be available to the authors in both cases. The article’s final version must follow the appropriate style guide and contain the authors’ data (names, institutions and emails) and the ORCID details. Submitted articles will be evaluated according to their originality, technical soundness, significance of findings, contribution to knowledge, and clarity of exposition and organisation. Code of Ethics Inspired by the code of ethics put forward by the Association of Computing Machinery, the programme committee, supervised by the general conference chairs and organisers, have the right to desk-reject manuscripts that perpetuate harmful stereotypes, employ unethical research practices, or uncritically present outcomes or implications that disadvantage minoritized communities. Further, reviewers of the scientific committee will be explicitly asked to consider whether the research was conducted in compliance with professional, ethical standards and applicable regulatory guidelines. Failure to do so could lead to a desk-rejection. Publication Each accepted and presented full, short and extended abstract manuscript will be included in the conference proceedings by Springer in Communications in Computer and Information Science<https://www.springer.com/series/7899>. At least one author must register for the conference by the early registration deadline. The official publication date is when the publisher makes the proceedings available online. This date will be after the conference and can take a number of weeks.

Are you passionate about advancing research in data science and data visualization? Do you have experience designing, implementing, and using visualizations? Then this email is for you! We are conducting a study to understand how visualization examples influence the design ideas that designers like you create. We are seeking out participants for an 80-minute study (no more than 2 hours). In the session, you will be required to brainstorm and create interesting data visualizations. The one-time session is entirely remote. This is an opportunity to be an active contributor to current and future research in data science and data visualization. We will collect data on your thought process while brainstorming and creating ideas. Personal demographic data will also be collected. The postdoc fellow will conduct research within the fields of information visualization and visual analytics in close collaboration with ISOVIS members, other research groups of the department, and domain experts within the Linnaeus University Centre for Data Intensive Sciences and Applications (DISA). The work duties include the whole research cycle, i.e., from literature reviews and the identification of research challenges, throughout the implementation of visualization tools and performing user studies, to the reporting of the results in publications. In this context, the postdoc fellow is expected to regularly present intermediate/final research results at international conferences/workshops and publish them in highly-ranked conference proceedings and journals in the areas of information visualization, visual analytics, but possibly also in the areas of the domain experts. Within the DISA environment, large and complex data sets from various domain areas need to be efficiently visualized to transform data into useful information and new knowledge by the development of visualization principles, techniques and visual analytics tools, including provisioning suitable backend infrastructures to serve web-based, interactive visualizations. As we would like the authors to demonstrate novel and applicable ideas in all aspects of visualization, posters on work in progress and practical applications are welcome. The16th IEEE Pacific Visualization Symposium will be held from April 18-21, 2023 in Seoul, Korea. An interactive poster session will be held to allow plenty of opportunities for one-on-one dialogue and small group discussion in a casual setting. The two-page summary of the accepted posters will be included in the electronic conference proceedings.
