We are inviting authors of interactive data visualizations, also called macroscopes, to submit their work for inclusion in the Places & Spaces: Mapping Science exhibit. IMPORTANT DATES Submissions due: Feb 15, 2022 Mapmakers notified: Apr 1, 2022 Submit final entries: May 30, 2022 Ready for display: Aug 31, 2022 Macroscopes are software tools that help us focus on patterns in data that are too large or complex to see with the naked eye. The idea of the macroscope was explored in 1979 by Joël de Rosnay in a book titled The Macroscope: A New World Scientific System [1]. To meet the challenges posed by the rapidly increasing abundance, diversity, and complexity of information, de Rosnay proposed the macroscope, a tool for observing “what is at once too great, too slow, and too complex for our eyes.” Like microscopes and telescopes, macroscopes can startle us when we point them at objects we thought we already knew. Through their lens, we may see familiar structures in a new light or gain a fresh perspective on an old process. This year’s call for submissions to the Places & Spaces exhibit celebrates the decidedly scopic feature of macroscopes. Simply put, we are looking for interactive visualizations that disrupt our old habits of seeing, that challenge our common patterns of perception in order that we might see something anew. To do so, they may use novel datasets and algorithms or employ innovative user interface designs. Places & Spaces is a traveling exhibit that currently features 100 maps and 28 interactive macroscopes from a wide range of disciplines. Since 2005, the exhibit has traveled to 28 countries and appeared in various formats at over 382 venues and events, including the Davos Economic Forum, National Academy of Sciences, and the New York Public Library. News coverage has appeared in Nature, Science, USA Today, and Wired. References [1] de Rosnay, Joël. 1979. The Macroscope: A New World Scientific System. New York: Harper & Row. Submission Details Interactive data visualizations designed for desktop, mobile, touch-enabled, and/or large (e.g., tiled wall) devices are all welcome. To be incorporated into the exhibit kiosk, macroscopes must be 1) web-based, 2) touch-enabled, 3) allowed to run inside an iframe element, 4) have CORS enabled for http://idemo.cns. iu.edu, and 5) served over HTTPS. Macroscopes will be deployed on a 46” multi-touch 1920 x 1080 display running Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and Chrome 91. Each macroscope should be fully functional for at least two years. Macroscopes might be deployed using other hardware, please contact the curatorial team to discuss options. Macroscope authors should be available to work with the exhibit staff over a period of three months to prepare the macroscopes for public display and travel. Each entry must be submitted by February 15, 2022, and needs to include: * Title of macroscope * Author(s) name, email address, affiliation, mailing address, and social media handles * Link to online site that features the macroscope tool or to executable code * Macroscope tool description (300 words max): user group and needs served, data used, data * analysis performed, visualization techniques applied, and main insights gained. Please also outline * the vision that this new macroscope embodies. * References to relevant publications or online sites that should be cited, links to related projects or * works * Describe the impact your data visualization has had on public awareness, social policy, or political * action. * Submit entries via https://forms.gle/wPr5X16Cm5MwDb7c9 Review Process Submissions will be reviewed and evaluated by the exhibit advisory board (listed below) in terms of their: * Scientific rigor * Value as a tool for data exploration * Ability to provide new, actionable insights * Relevance for a general audience Final Submission Authors of winning entries will be contacted by April 1, 2022 and invited to submit final entries by May 30, 2022. Each final entry consists of: * Link to online site that features the macroscope tool or link to executable code. This must be a * fully self-contained version of the macroscope that can operate without any outside links and * without opening new windows. * Biographies for all authors (100 words each) * High resolution author portraits that are no smaller than 360 x 450 pixels, or 1.2” x 1.5” at 300 dpi. * Signed copyright and reproduction agreement Authors are welcome to use the expertise and resources of the exhibit curators and designers. IEEE VIS Workshop (Vis + Prov) x Domain visxprov(a)googlegroups.com<mailto:visxprov@googlegroups.com> We invite submissions for the IEEE VIS Workshop (Vis + Prov) x Domain: Workshop on Visualization and Provenance Across Domains (https://visxprov.github.io/) Workshop Goals: Our ambition is to build this into a series of workshops, targeting a different research community outside visualization each year, and eventually create a provenance research network that connects all the relevant communities. For this year, we will target the database community, which is one of the first communities to formalize provenance research, providing the theoretical foundations such as the widely adopted W3C PROV specifications. Recently provenance and visualization have been adopted to address core database challenges such as query, workflow, and dependency. There is a clear need to build closer connections between the two communities. For this year, the workshop’s main goals are: 1. To establish and improve the collaboration between the visualization and database community on provenance-related research through a discussion of challenges that span both communities; 2. To further advance data provenance research within the database community to address the latest challenges, such as support for big data management, data processing, data sharing, or query optimization supported by provenance; 3. To further advance analytic provenance research within the visualization community to address the latest challenges, such as support for machine learning and visualization reproducibility. Scope of Topics: While we are interested in any submissions at the intersection of provenance and visualization, we are especially focused on: * What can we learn when contrasting the problems of these two communities? Is there any visualization problem that can benefit from a database/analytic provenance method or vice versa? * What are the most pressing provenance-related challenges in the database community? Is there any visualization-related solution to them? For example, * What visualization techniques may be used to assist the database community in constructing retrospective and prospective provenance that are more interactive, scalable, and user-friendly? * How can query languages be supported from the standpoint of provenance? * What are the opportunities for provenance in emerging visualization research areas such as machine learning visualization and visualization reproducibility? For example, * How do we show changes to visualizations, interactions, or algorithms over time in various domains, including progressive visualizations, interactive visualizations, and machine learning training? * How do we transparently and efficiently share visualizations and their production processes? Submission: We will accept research papers/extended abstracts or position papers. Your submission should be commensurate with the level of contribution but is required to be at least 2 pages (plus references). Papers must follow the IEEE VIS TVCG Journal submissions guidelines (https://tc.computer.org/vgtc/publications/journal/) and be submitted through the Precision Conference System (PCS) (https://new.precisionconference.com/vgtc) Your submission should be anonymized to facilitate a double-blind review between authors and the conference organizers. We are happy to announce that the 8th edition of VIS4DH — the Workshop on Visualization for the Digital Humanities — will take place as part of [IEEE VIS 2023](http://ieeevis.org/year/2023/welcome) in Melbourne, Australia. For 7 years now, the VIS4DH workshop has brought together researchers and practitioners from the fields of visualization and the humanities to discuss new research directions at the intersection of visualization and (digital) humanities research. The general aim is to foster productive collaborations that mutually advance all fields involved. This year VIS4DH is taking inspiration from the conference’s host country by focusing on storytelling and narrative. Like other forms of communication, visualizing data is a way of telling stories. Just presenting data is not enough: it is also important to structure, sequence, and engage with the information being presented. You can contribute to VIS4DH 2023 in two ways - you can submit to the [Paper track](https://vis4dh.dbvis.de/cfp/#papers) (with an option to publish your work at IEEE Xplore), or you can submit to the [Exhibits & Provocations track](https://vis4dh.dbvis.de/cfp/#provocations). Title. Explaining the trajectories of jellyfishs with heterogeneous text and images mining and visualization Key words. The study of jellyfish outbreaks is important because they can have a negative impact on the provisioning of marine ecosystems services for human welfare. In addition, they can disrupt human activities, such as fishing, tourism and shipping. Jellyfish outbreaks are often linked to environmental changes such as water temperature, salinity and currents. Studying these factors can help predict future jellyfish outbreaks and develop management strategies to mitigate their impact on the environment and human activities. There are several methods to collect data on jellyfish, to better understand their distribution, abundance and behavior such as visual observations- as jellyfish can be visible on the surface of the water-, the use of plankton nets, satellite tags to track their movements, underwater cameras, etc. However, their capture and conservation and their fleeting and unpredictability appearances induce scarce scientific datasets. Objectives. We here propose the collection and analysis of multilingual and heterogeneous documents to complement existing data (i.e., JeDI) with original data social media, press and scientific literature. Our objective is to depict patterns and trends in collected data, to map spacetime patterns of coastal aggregations and stranded jellyfish, and to track their diversity changes and the contribution of non-indigenous species to such phenomena (e.g. determination of invasion speed). The originality of our project is to disentangle the extent to which these events and the distribution patterns of non-indigenous species are related to climatic change and ecosystem degradation. Methodology. We will follow a three steps strategy: 1) analysis of spatio-temporal series: multimodal supervised classification to exploit heterogeneous resources and spatio-temporal clustering to group similar data in space and time and to use species distribution modelling to understand their relation to the environment and model future evolutions 2) heterogeneous data visualization: design, implementation and validation of an interactive visual interface for exploring the results of the first step (classes, patterns, clusters…) and the texts/images from the raw data. Particular attention will be paid to the 3) interpretability of the used methods. Call for Papers – Designing Map-based Interfaces and Interactions (MAPII 2023)  INTERACT 2023 Workshop   28 August 2023 – York, UK More info: http://avcd.aalto.fi/mapii2023/ ABOUT THE WORKSHOP ----------------------- Maps, in their many forms, have long been used to guide and coordinate different human activities, ranging from local to global, and small scale to large scale. As such, maps continue to play a central role as the basis for a wide variety of interactive tools and applications in our modern digital age as well. This workshop aims to bring together researchers, designers and practitioners interested in maps and map-like visualizations as the underlying physical, theoretical, or metaphorical framework for designing interfaces and interactions. This workshop will create a common ground and a collaborative space for sharing design, research, and practical expertise to aid its participants with creating novel future map-based designs in different fields, including visualization, visual design, interaction design, user interface design, and cartography. This workshop is part of INTERACT 2023, and is supported by the IFIP TC 13 Working Group on Human-Centred Technology for Sustainability (WG 13.10). CALL FOR PARTICIPATION ----------------------- The primary objective of this workshop is to create common ground and a collaborative space for sharing design, research, and practical expertise, practices, learnings, and experiences to help its participants with creating novel future map-based designs in different fields, including visualization, visual design, interaction design, user interface design, and cartography. Prospective workshop participants are invited to submit a short paper describing their interests and work related to the topics of this workshop. Some of the main topics to be covered by this workshop will include, but not limited to, the following: – Research and design foundations of map-based interfaces and interactions. – Theories, principles and practices guiding the design of map-based interfaces and interactions. – Applications of map-based interfaces and interactions, in areas such environment, sustainability, epidemiology, healthcare, education, and entertainment. – User evaluations of map-based interfaces and interactions. WORKSHOP STRUCTURE ----------------------- This one-day workshop will be informal and interactive, combining short presentations of the accepted workshop papers with group discussions, aimed at assisting the authors and other participants with developing their research and design ideas. The workshop will also include a hands-on group activity. As part of this, the workshop participants will work in small groups to perform map-based tasks and create design sketches for an interactive application. The designs will then be shared at the main conference. We hope to run the workshop in person at the conference. Provisions will, however, be made to run the workshop in remote or hybrid mode if necessary. SUBMISSIONS ----------------------- Workshop paper submissions should be of maximum 10 pages, and prepared according to the Springer LNCS format, using the templates provided for CS Proceedings and other Multiauthor Volumes (https://www.springer.com/gp/computer-science/lncs/conference-proceedings-gu…) Submissions should be made through Easychair https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=mapii2023. The workshop programme committee will review the submitted position papers, and select 10-15 papers for presentation at the workshop based on their quality and relevance to the workshop topics. In addition to sharing the accepted workshop papers with its participants, the authors will be invited to submit extended version of their papers for inclusion in an edited volume, to be published by INTERACT 2023 organizers. Furthermore, the workshop will include a discussion session on future publications in, for instance, a special issue of an international journal and/or a co-authored report for dissemination of the workshop findings.
