We are inviting authors of interactive data visualizations, also called macroscopes, to submit their work for inclusion in the Places & Spaces: Mapping Science exhibit. IMPORTANT DATES Submissions due: Feb 15, 2022 Mapmakers notified: Apr 1, 2022 Submit final entries: May 30, 2022 Ready for display: Aug 31, 2022 Macroscopes are software tools that help us focus on patterns in data that are too large or complex to see with the naked eye. The idea of the macroscope was explored in 1979 by Joël de Rosnay in a book titled The Macroscope: A New World Scientific System [1]. To meet the challenges posed by the rapidly increasing abundance, diversity, and complexity of information, de Rosnay proposed the macroscope, a tool for observing “what is at once too great, too slow, and too complex for our eyes.” Like microscopes and telescopes, macroscopes can startle us when we point them at objects we thought we already knew. Through their lens, we may see familiar structures in a new light or gain a fresh perspective on an old process. This year’s call for submissions to the Places & Spaces exhibit celebrates the decidedly scopic feature of macroscopes. Simply put, we are looking for interactive visualizations that disrupt our old habits of seeing, that challenge our common patterns of perception in order that we might see something anew. To do so, they may use novel datasets and algorithms or employ innovative user interface designs. Places & Spaces is a traveling exhibit that currently features 100 maps and 28 interactive macroscopes from a wide range of disciplines. Since 2005, the exhibit has traveled to 28 countries and appeared in various formats at over 382 venues and events, including the Davos Economic Forum, National Academy of Sciences, and the New York Public Library. Submission Details Interactive data visualizations designed for desktop, mobile, touch-enabled, and/or large (e.g., tiled wall) devices are all welcome. To be incorporated into the exhibit kiosk, macroscopes must be 1) web-based, 2) touch-enabled, 3) allowed to run inside an iframe element, 4) have CORS enabled for http://idemo.cns. iu.edu, and 5) served over HTTPS. Macroscopes will be deployed on a 46” multi-touch 1920 x 1080 display running Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and Chrome 91. Each macroscope should be fully functional for at least two years. Macroscopes might be deployed using other hardware, please contact the curatorial team to discuss options. Macroscope authors should be available to work with the exhibit staff over a period of three months to prepare the macroscopes for public display and travel. Each entry must be submitted by February 15, 2022, and needs to include: * Title of macroscope * Author(s) name, email address, affiliation, mailing address, and social media handles * Link to online site that features the macroscope tool or to executable code * Macroscope tool description (300 words max): user group and needs served, data used, data * analysis performed, visualization techniques applied, and main insights gained. Please also outline * the vision that this new macroscope embodies. * References to relevant publications or online sites that should be cited, links to related projects or * works * Describe the impact your data visualization has had on public awareness, social policy, or political * action. * Submit entries via https://forms.gle/wPr5X16Cm5MwDb7c9 Review Process Submissions will be reviewed and evaluated by the exhibit advisory board (listed below) in terms of their: * Scientific rigor * Value as a tool for data exploration * Ability to provide new, actionable insights * Relevance for a general audience Final Submission Authors of winning entries will be contacted by April 1, 2022 and invited to submit final entries by May 30, 2022. Each final entry consists of: * Link to online site that features the macroscope tool or link to executable code. This must be a * fully self-contained version of the macroscope that can operate without any outside links and * without opening new windows. * Biographies for all authors (100 words each) * High resolution author portraits that are no smaller than 360 x 450 pixels, or 1.2” x 1.5” at 300 dpi. * Signed copyright and reproduction agreement Authors are welcome to use the expertise and resources of the exhibit curators and designers. For this year, we will target the database community, which is one of the first communities to formalize provenance research, providing the theoretical foundations such as the widely adopted W3C PROV specifications. Recently provenance and visualization have been adopted to address core database challenges such as query, workflow, and dependency. There is a clear need to build closer connections between the two communities. For this year, the workshop’s main goals are: 1. To establish and improve the collaboration between the visualization and database community on provenance-related research through a discussion of challenges that span both communities; 2. To further advance data provenance research within the database community to address the latest challenges, such as support for big data management, data processing, data sharing, or query optimization supported by provenance; 3. To further advance analytic provenance research within the visualization community to address the latest challenges, such as support for machine learning and visualization reproducibility. Scope of Topics: While we are interested in any submissions at the intersection of provenance and visualization, we are especially focused on: * What can we learn when contrasting the problems of these two communities? Is there any visualization problem that can benefit from a database/analytic provenance method or vice versa? * What are the most pressing provenance-related challenges in the database community? Is there any visualization-related solution to them? For example, * What visualization techniques may be used to assist the database community in constructing retrospective and prospective provenance that are more interactive, scalable, and user-friendly? * How can query languages be supported from the standpoint of provenance? * What are the opportunities for provenance in emerging visualization research areas such as machine learning visualization and visualization reproducibility? For example, * How do we show changes to visualizations, interactions, or algorithms over time in various domains, including progressive visualizations, interactive visualizations, and machine learning training? * How do we transparently and efficiently share visualizations and their production processes? Submission: We will accept research papers/extended abstracts or position papers. Your submission should be commensurate with the level of contribution but is required to be at least 2 pages (plus references). This event accepts full and short paper submissions for talks. Full Papers (up to 8 pages) Paper submissions should describe the role, application, and impact of visualization in data science. Review Process (Double blind) Paper submissions will be managed by the Program Chairs and sent to the Program Committee to evaluate the work’s novelty and significance. Your work reviewed via a double-blind process; to do this, simply be sure to exclude all identifying information in the submitted manuscript file, ensuring that the reviewers will not know the identity of the authors. Otherwise, the review process will be single-blind, i.e., the reviewers will know the identity of the authors, but the authors will not know the identity of the reviewers. The Department of Computer Science in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University invites applications for a postdoctoral fellow. The appointment is a 12-month position, with the possibility of renewal for one additional year, and will commence on August 1, 2023. Applicants should hold a PhD in Computer Science or a related technical field on or before August 1, 2023. This position is part of a collaboration between the Computer Science department at American University, the Environmental Science department at American University, and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. The successful candidate will become a part of an interdisciplinary team working to visualize global seafood trade data to understand when global seafood trade either improves or threatens food and nutrition security. The project aims at developing novel methods and systems to support the construction and analysis of a global seafood trade network database to advance human-environmental research. The focus of this postdoctoral fellow position at American University will be in analyzing geographic network flow datasets and delivering novel and interpretable representations on the web. Candidates must have a strong programming background. Requirements: • Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related technical field. • Strong background in interactive data visualization and analysis. • Expertise in JavaScript, CSS, and HTML, and other technologies supporting website development. • Experience with server-side web technologies, such as NodeJS and Flask, is preferred • Experience with online databases, especially network database schema (e.g., Neo4J), is preferred • Experienced in designing and implementing empirical user studies. • Experienced with quantitative research methods. • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a diverse interdisciplinary team. • Demonstrated ability to work with and mentor undergraduate students. • Excellent written and oral communication. • Research experience in spatial data analysis and/or GIS technologies is preferred. CALL FOR PAPERS: ---------------- The 2023 Workshop on Visual Analytics in Healthcare (VAHC 2023) is the 14th annual workshop that provides an opportunity for participants to discuss state-of-the-art interactive visual data analysis techniques and review how such techniques can be applied to healthcare data. The primary objective of the workshop is to bring together leading VIS designers, scientists, medical experts, and visionaries to discuss: a) interactive data visualization techniques that can be applied to healthcare data, b) areas of healthcare that need more attention from visualization and visual data analysis research, and c) emerging research trends, visualization techniques, software applications, benchmarks, and open datasets. The workshop will enable presenters to showcase their ongoing work through oral presentations and system demos, either as video supplemental material or live demos during the workshop to be arranged with the organizers for maximum visibility. In years past, demos of prototype and/or production visual analytics software have been particularly well received, and paper submitters are encouraged to submit a companion demo proposal. BEST PAPERS: ---------------- VAHC assigns Best Paper and Honorable Mention awards. The awards entail a certificate and recognition on the VAHC website. This year, we also plan to invite authors of high-quality papers to submit a revised and extended version to an internationally recognized scientific journal (t.b.a. soon). The topic of this special issue will be “Interactive Visualization of Health Data for Digital and Personal Health”. The review process will seek to assign the same reviewers for previously accepted VAHC papers. Watch out for details in our second call for papers. TOPICS AND SCOPE: ------------------ We welcome discussions of the use of visual approaches, interaction design, statistical methods, and machine learning for healthcare data analysis. Participants may address the needs of various user groups, including (but not limited to) patients, clinical researchers, epidemiologists, public health analysts, physicians, hospital-based quality assurance officers, and insurance claim analysts. The 2023 Workshop on Visual Analytics in Healthcare will cover a range of topics on the design, implementation, deployment, evaluation, and abstraction of visual analytics methods, including (but not limited to): Clinical care - Prescription drugs and drug-drug interactions - Multi-omic datasets - Longitudinal clinical data - Visual data mining of EMRs - Specific treatment contexts, emergency department, patient safety, mental health. - Clinical workflows - Outcome forecasting or prediction - Explainable AI and ML in healthcare Digital health and personal health - Mobile health - Wearable devices' data control and processing - Telehealth and telemedicine - Personalized medicine Patient-related applications: - Patient-generated health data - Understanding of patient behavior and experience - Patient education - Physician-patient communication Public health data: - Pandemic forecasting and tracking - Learning from crises with visualization - Public health surveillance systems PAPER SUBMISSION AND FORMAT GUIDELINES: --------------------------------------- VAHC 2023 will have a new paper format! We will accept short papers with up to six pages plus one page of references (6+1). We encourage a diverse range of submissions and demonstrations from academia, healthcare organizations, and industry in any of the short paper types listed below: Application papers (format: “6+1”) Research papers (format: “6+1”) Positions and system demo papers (format “2+1”) Posters (format: “2+1” abstract and A0 poster) Accepted application papers and research papers will be published in the IEEE Xplore digital library. Accepted system demo papers and posters will be included in the VAHC proceedings and made available via IEEE VIS for digital download. MERCADO is a half-day workshop at IEEE VIS 2023 <https://ieeevis.org/> on the topic of new Multimodal Experiences for Remote Communication Around Data Online, taking place October 22nd or 23rd in Melbourne, Australia. https://sites.google.com/view/mercadoworkshop/home Update (Jun 8): the deadline for workshop submissions is July 15 2023 (EoD anywhere on Earth) We aim to gather researchers working in data visualization, human-computer interaction (HCI), and computer-supported collaborative work (CSCW) who are interested in multimodal, synchronous, and remote or hybrid forms of communication and collaboration within organizational and educational settings. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION If you have been working on designing new ways to communicate, present and tell stories about data synchronously or asynchronously, using visualizations and new modes of interaction for presenters, please consider sharing your experiences at this workshop. SUBMISSIONS Those who want to participate in this workshop will submit a short paper (two to four pages) in the style of short provocation or reflection statements, case studies, design fictions, or work-in-progress reports. We will also encourage the submission of accompanying videos. We will host accepted submissions on the workshop’s website, however will we also encourage authors to archive their publications using open access services. Call for Questions for a EuroVis Panel

Dear Members of the VIS Community, we are organizing a panel “The Future of Interactive Data Analysis and Visualization” at EuroVis, on Wednesday June 14, 11:00-12:30. Generation after generation, the community has evolved its understanding of research problems and, along the way, contributed various techniques, applications, and research methods. While some of the developed techniques have stood the test of time, we will consider what else needs to be remembered or even revitalized from the good old days in this panel. Further, VIS is currently facing exciting times, with great changes and trends within and outside the community. Thus, in this panel, we want to analyze current research trends and discuss our most exciting ideas and directions. Looking ahead, it can already be anticipated that the future of VIS is subject to change. In this panel, we want to map out future research directions for our community. Along these three lines, the guiding theme of our interactive panel will be three types of (provoking) statements: (i) In the good old days, I liked when we did . . . (ii) Currently, a most exciting trend is … & (iii) In the future, we will be doing . . .
