Project 1: Next generation HR: Conversational Interfaces and Large-Language Models for Empathic Human-Robot Interaction The project aims to explore how the use of AI could enhance various interface types beyond the usual web forms to better support staff training, facilitation and arbitration at meetings. This could take the form of an embodied conversational interface, using technology such as Large-Language Models (LLMs), integrated into a physical robot. The research goals are to investigate how LLMs can be adapted in real-time using multi-modal situational awareness, what capabilities an intelligent robot embodiment focussed on HR should have, and to understand how people would interact and behave around it. Project 2: Human-Centred AI for Productivity The project aims to explore the options to use human-centred AI to improve productivity, which is a core concern of many of sponsor’s customers. One possibility is to leverage the new data that is becoming available, such as user interactions with computer systems and those collected through wearables. The data will then be analysed with the latest AI and Machine Learning methods, with the goal to use the insight from the analysis to design the least intrusive intervention needed in a HR software solution setting that can improve productivity effectively and ethically. Furthermore, we seek out nominations of individuals that enable us to recognize both the diversity of individuals and the diversity of contributions from the community at large. The VGTC Visualization Awards Program has five awards plus induction to the IEEE VGTC Visualization Academy: VGTC Visualization Dissertation Award The Doctoral Dissertation Award recognizes outstanding academic research and development in the field. VGTC Visualization Significant New Researcher Award The VGTC Significant New Researcher Award recognizes an individual who has made significant recent research contributions in the field. There is a growing familiarity among people with conversational interactions mediated by technology due to the widespread use of mobile devices and messaging services. Over half the population on our planet has access to the Internet with ever-lowering barriers to accessibility. Though text modality is a dominant way to implement CUIs today, foundational AI models enable the implementation of multimodal CUIs using voice and visual modality. Adopting visual and auditory cues in addition to text-based responses provides an engaging user experience, specifically in complex scenarios like health guidance, and job interviewing, among others. This tutorial will present a review of state-of-the-art research and best practices on building and deploying multimodal CUIs and synthesize the open research challenges in supporting such CUIs. Interactive Visual Analytics for Knowledge Integration and Decision Intelligence supports human decision making through interaction with data and statistical and machine learning processes, with applications in a broad range of situations where human expertise must be brought to bear on problems characterized by massive datasets and data that are uncertain in fact, relevance, location in space and position in time. In partnership with organizations in defence, health care, and business, visual analytics research methods combining laboratory studies, cognitive ethnography, and field experiments have aided the design of information systems for decision making about injuries to children, multiomic precision health, radiological diagnosis, and VR for conflict zone operations. Submissions are encouraged that focus on the applications, methods, and theory for visualization, analytics, knowledge integration and decision intelligence in organizations. Case studies of applications of these methods to new analytic and decision making tasks in science and technology, public health, business intelligence, financial analysis, social sciences, and other domains are particularly welcome. Submissions may include studies of visual analytics and decision support in the context of an organization (e.g., communication between analysts and policy-makers), perceptual and cognitive aspects of the analytic task, Interactive Machine Learning, and collaborative analysis using visual information systems. Additionally, submissions may include understandable, trustable AI as well as human-guided AI to round out the problem-solving process. Emphasis will be given to submissions that use visual analytics for social change discovery, analysis, communication, and focus on mixed-initiative human/AI analysis. This minitrack seeks to define analytical methods and technologies that use interactive visualization to meet challenges posed by data, platforms, and applications for decision making and risk-based decision making: * Analysis of multi-perspective knowledge integration, synthesis and engineering in organizations. * Use of interactive visualization and visual analytics in digital economies * Visual analytics and visualization in "wicked" problem solving in organizations * Analysis of datasets of varying size and complexity from archives and real-time streams * Collaborative visual analysis and operational coordination within and across organizations. * Interactive and visual risk-based decision making * Interactive machine learning methods * Managing response time of complex analytical tasks * Effective deployment and case studies of success from deployed visualization and analytics experiences * Visualization and analytics for data-driven policy making and decision support * Issues and challenges in evaluation of visual decision making * Mixed-initiative analysis methods for decision making * Cognitive and social science aspects of visual decision-making environments * Visual decision-making in the context of Trustable AI or mis/disinformation * Theory-enhanced automated detection of fake news and fake comments (with visualization) For HICSS-58, we extend our focus to multidisciplinary collaboration and communication among researcher from a variety of research perspectives. Authors are encouraged to bring the lens of their own background and expertise to focus on the analytics of the data itself and coordination of multiple levels of analysis, decision-making, communication, and operations to the design and evaluation of effective presentations for stakeholders and dissemination of trustful and actionable information. We invite computational, cognitive, communication, and organizational perspectives on advanced data processing and interactive visualization for analysis and decision-making across a range of human endeavors. We also invite participation from researchers who are looking at scaling issues and multiscale issues, whether these scales refer to the time of decision making, the form-factor and operational constraints of mobile devices, the number of decision makers or the more traditional notion of multiscale simulation and real-world scales of data. 2024 IEEE Workshop on "Uncertainty Visualization: Applications, Techniques, Software, and Decision Frameworks, " October 13, 2024, in St. Pete Beach, Florida Tushar Athawale and David Pugmire from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, along with Chris Johnson and Paul Rosen from the University of Utah and Kristi Potter from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, are excited to announce the IEEE workshop on “Uncertainty Visualization: Applications, Techniques, Software, and Decision Frameworks,” to be held in conjunction with the 2024 IEEE VIS Conference in St. Pete Beach, Florida, October 13-18, 2024. Uncertainty in data, algorithms, and processes is a big challenge faced in every domain. This workshop's call for participation is accepting short/full-length papers and posters on topics related to uncertainty visualization, analysis, and treatment in a broad range of domains (e.g., visualization, machine learning, climate science, quantum computing) for trusted scientific discovery. Relevant topics include (but are not limited to): • Applications: Domains-specific use cases for uncertainty visualization and analysis of scientific or information data with domains including but not limited to climate science, energy science, material science, quantum computing, and machine learning. • Techniques: Techniques to quantify and convey uncertainty in 2D/3D/high-dimensional (scientific or information) data. Information Visualization has been one of the cornerstones of Data Science, turning the abundance of Big Data being produced through modern systems into actionable knowledge. Indeed, the Big Data era has realized the availability of voluminous datasets that are dynamic, multidimensional, noisy and heterogeneous in nature. Transforming a data-curious user into someone who can access and analyze that data is even more burdensome now for a great number of users with little or no support and expertise on the data processing part. In this context, several traditional problems from Data Management & Mining, Information Visualization, and Human-computer Interaction communities, such as efficient data storage, querying, and indexing to enable visual analytics, as well as new ways and AI techniques for visual presentation of massive data, need to be revisited. For instance, techniques that provide mechanisms for information abstraction, prefetching, sampling, progressive data visualization, and summarization to address problems related to visual information overplotting. Furthermore, it is essential to develop new methods that enhance user comprehension by providing customization options tailored to various user-defined exploration scenarios and preferences. The Big Data Visual Exploration and Analytics workshop (BigVis) aims at addressing the above challenges and issues by providing a forum for researchers and practitioners to discuss, exchange, and disseminate their work. BigVis attempts to attract attention from the research areas of: Data Management & Mining, Information Visualization, Human-Computer Interaction, Machine Learning, and Computer Graphics, and highlight novel works that bridge together these communities. The BigVis 2024 held in conjunction with the 50th International Conference on Very Large Databases (VLDB 2024), Guangzhou, China. These challenges are reflected in the corresponding sub-fields of machine learning, signal processing, multi-modal techniques and human-machine interaction. Following tradition, SUMAC 2024 will also be awarding a best paper award, accompanied with a certificate and a trophy. *** Submission guidelines Submission format. All submissions must be original work not under review at any other workshop, conference, or journal. The workshop will accept papers describing completed work (full paper) as well as work in progress (short paper). Two submission formats are accepted: a) 4 pages plus 1-page reference (short paper); or b) 8 pages plus up to 2-page reference (full paper). They must be encoded as PDF using the ACM Article Template of the main conference ACM Multimedia 2024 ( [ https://2024.acmmm.org/regular-papers | https://2024.acmmm.org/regular-papers ] ). Peer Review and publication in ACM Digital Library. Paper submissions must conform with the “double-blind” review policy.
