Work to date has generally focussed on developing user training to mitigate the effect of a small number of cognitive biases with little effort on software solutions. The latter not only requires research to identify situations where help would assist in better decision making, but also in developing novel corrective actions ideally tailored to the user. In the visualisation domain, work has centred around improving hypothesis generation to avoid confirmation bias, where the user unconsciously seeks evidence to confirm what they already believe, rather than seeking disconfirming evidence. There is plenty of scope for investigating whether or not the cognition of visualisation or elements therein are subject to cognitive biases. We invite participants from a wide range of disciplines such as decision science, cognitive psychology, information visualisation, visual analytics, software engineering, business and intelligence to exchange ideas and establish a roadmap of the state of the art and promote future research potential. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - cognitive biases and information visualisation - new classification schemes for cognitive biases - integrating cognitive bias mitigation into existing software - measuring susceptibility to cognitive bias - cognitive biases in groups/collaborative situations - training/learning tools to overcome particular cognitive biases - business decision making - impact of big data on cognitive biases - evaluation techniques/methodologies The workshop will include invited talks, short individual presentations and group activities and will provide a forum for participants to exchange ideas and establish a roadmap of the state of the art and identify future research potential. We hope to grow this interdisciplinary community to promote future collaboration. SUBMISSIONS We invite authors to submit original work, as either 2-3 page position papers or 4-6 page research papers. All submissions will be peer-reviewed and judged on the basis of originality, contribution to the field, technical and presentation quality, and relevance to the workshop. Accepted papers will be published in the supplementary proceedings of i-KNOW 2014 (either ACM or IEEE). Motivation, Goals, Objectives, Outcome The success of an information system depends mainly on its ability to properly support interaction between users and information. Current information systems, however, show as a particular point of failure the vagueness between user search terms and the knowledge orders of the information space in question (Mayr et al. 2008, Mutschke et al. 2011). Studies in interactive information seeking behavior have confirmed that the ability to browse an information space and observe similarities and dissimilarities between information objects is crucial for accidental encountering and the creative use of information (Nicholas et al. 2004, Westerman et al. 2005). This is in particular true for heterogeneous information spaces within the open web. Some kind of guided searching therefore becomes more and more important in order to precisely discover information without knowing the right search terms. Yet, this seems to remain the weakest point of interactive information systems (Ford 2000, Foster 2004, Tang 2007). Knowledge mapping encompasses all attempts to use visualizations to gain insights into the structure and evolution of large-scale information spaces. Knowledge maps can take the form of network visualizations, treemaps or specific, map like arrangements of search results (cf. Börner et al. 2003, Shiffrin/Börner 2004, Börner 2010, Klavans/Boyack 2010, Skupin et al. 2013, Sahal et al. 2013, Boyack/Klavans 2013). As an activity performed in very different disciplines - and often independent from each other - it stands in line with the dominance of the visual in our culture (Manovich 2009). Knowledge maps of digital library collections are promising navigation tools through knowledge spaces but - to the best of our knowledge - still far away from being applicable for searching digital libraries. Most maps are made for special purposes, are static, and usually not interactive (Akdag Salah et al. 2012). In interactive information systems the use of visual elements to enhance information seeking and discovery is a recurring research issue. However, not much of the experiences made in knowledge mapping have ever been implemented in online interfaces to digital libraries and collections (Börner/Chen 2001), nor is there a stable and continuous knowledge exchange between the "map makers" on the one hand and the Information Retrieval (IR) specialists on the other hand. Thus, there is also a lack of models that properly combine insights of the two strands, which are driven by quite different epistemic perspectives. Our workshop aims at bringing together these two communities: experts in IR reflecting on visual enhanced search interfaces and experts in knowledge mapping reflecting on visualizations of the content of a collection that might also present - visually - a context for a search term. The intention of the workshop is to raise awareness of the potential of interactive knowledge maps for information seeking purposes and to create a common ground for experiments aiming at the incorporation of knowledge maps into IR models at the level of the user interface. The major focus of the workshop is on the question of how knowledge maps can be utilized for scholarly information seeking in large information spaces. Our interests include interactive IR, information seeking behavior, knowledge mapping, science modelling, information visualization, and digital libraries. The workshop is closely related to the COST action KNOWeSCAPE (Analyzing the dynamics of information and knowledge landscapes: http://knowescape.org/<http://www.gesis.org/http:/>) which aims at implementing new navigation and search strategies based on insights of the complex nature of knowledge spaces as well as visualization principles for knowledge maps. The long-term research goal is to develop and evaluate new approaches for combining knowledge mapping and IR. More specifically, we address questions such as: * What are appropriate interactive knowledge maps for IR systems * How can knowledge maps be utilized for information seeking purposes? * How to locate an information need on a knowledge map? * How can (visually enhanced) search interfaces to knowledge maps look like? * How can interaction with knowledge maps be transformed into IR tasks? * Can knowledge maps improve searching in large, in particular heterogeneous, cross-language, cross-domain information spaces? * And the other way around: Can insights from IR also improve knowledge mapping itself? The availability of new IR test collections that contain citation and bibliographic information like the iSearch collection (see Lykke et al. 2010) or the ACL collection (Ritchie et al. 2006) could deliver an interesting playground for developing or evaluating combined models of IR and knowledge mapping for scholarly searching. We will be exploring possible visualization scenarios with short but rich scenarios in which designers, practitioners and researchers creatively explore opportunities for 'beyond-the-desktop' visualization. Jankun-Kelly http://www.cs.mdx.ac.uk/prov4sense/ During complex sensemaking and analysis task, it can be valuable to maintain a history of the processes and transformations involved - referred to as ‘provenance’ information. Provenance information can be a resource for "reﬂection-in-action" during analyses, for supporting planning and reframing of objectives and scope. It can also be a resource after the event, supporting the interpretation of claims, audit, accountability or training. There has been considerable work on capturing and visualizing of ‘data provenance’, which focuses on data collection and computation, and ‘analytic provenance’, which captures the interactive data exploration process. However, there is limited work of utilizing these provenance information to support sensemaking, in terms of improving its efﬁcacy and avoid pitfalls such as data quality issue and human bias. This workshop aims to bring together researchers involved in visual analytics and various aspects of sensemaking to consider emerging positions, questions, and ﬁndings related to the capture, processing, representation and use of provenance information to support complex sensemaking tasks. The emphasis is on discussion and collaboration, with a goal to produce a paper describing the state-of-the-art of provenance for sensemaking after the workshop. *DECISIVe: Dealing with Cognitive Biases in Visualisations* Geoffrey Ellis, David Peebles, Donald Kretz, Gaëlle Lortal http://decisive-workshop.dbvis.de/ Our inherent reliance on mental shortcuts, or heuristics, sometimes results in deviations in judgment from what rational decision models would predict. These deviations are known as cognitive biases. Heuristics allow us to make “good enough” decisions without expending all of our cognitive effort on the task, however, in critical decision environments, “good enough” is often NOT good enough. Visualization tools are increasingly adept at making sense of complex data, but researchers who study cognitive biases have come to realize that the quality of decisions made with these tools are often impaired because tool designers fail to address how heuristics and biases operate in a human-computer interactive setting. The aim of this workshop is to bring together a wide range of researchers and developers from domains such as information visualization, visual analytics and cognitive psychology to explore some of the ways in which biases impact user performance and share ideas and experiences about practical ways to reduce or overcome these potentially harmful effects in the systems we build. *Towards An Open Visualization Literacy Testing Platform* Sung-Hee Kim, Jeremy Boy, Sukwon Lee, Ji Soo Yi, and Niklas Elmqvist http://visualizationliteracy.org We propose a hands-on workshop where participants will learn about and discuss visualization literacy by actually designing and evaluating questions for a visualization literacy measure. Though the value of information visualization is becoming apparent to a broad audience, visualization researchers often acknowledge that people have different levels of understanding of visualization techniques. In other words, our understanding of how users interpret visualizations has not caught up with design and technical developments, and even the concept of visualization literacy is still debated. Different domains of research, such as mathematics education, cognitive science, and psychology, have been approaching this problem within their domain. We believe that researchers in information visualization and visual analytics should lead the effort in deﬁning the concept, and in creating valid and practical measurement tools. The goal of our workshop is to take a step in this direction by developing a better understanding of visualization literacy, identifying possible metrics for evaluation, and raising new questions for future research through the design and evaluation of visualization literacy tests. The outcome of our workshop will be a participatory web-platform for collectively created visualization literacy tests and questionnaires that can directly be used by researchers in our community. *Visualization for Predictive Analytics* E. Sun http://predictive-workshop.github.io One of the surprising facts of much current visualization research is that prediction does not often play a significant role. Most visualization research seems to focus exclusively on data analysis and presentation, with little support for predictive analytics and the numerous models researchers have developed for this purpose. Upon reflection, this comes as a surprise as many scientific endeavors and many business problems are mostly concerned with prediction. Looking more closely at the recent advancements (and tremendous popularity) of Data Science, one may recognize that the vast majority of problems addressed involve some form of prediction and modelling. Notable examples are: prediction of drug effectiveness in drug development, prediction of diseases in healthcare, prediction of crime in city management. Our goals are to increase the awareness about this interesting opportunity for visualization research, collect and compare examples of existing and ongoing research in this area and to for visual analytics researchers. Even though established scientific methods like controlled experiments and standard metrics like time and error continue to be the workhorse of evaluation in visualization, there is a growing need in the community to develop special approaches and metrics for evaluation at all stages of the development life cycle that address specific needs in visualization. The goal of the workshop is to continue the discussion and spread the word on alternative and novel evaluation methods and methodologies for visualization. Paper Types We accept two types of submissions—research papers and position papers. The workshop focuses on contributions from all areas of visualization, including visual analytics, information visualization, and scientific visualization. *Research papers* aim to make progress toward novel evaluation methods in visualization and to discuss their benefits and limitations compared to traditional methodologies. As in past editions of BELIV, we will not accept papers that merely report on the evaluation of a system or technique unless the focus of the contribution is on lessons learned about applying a novel evaluation method or methodology and new insights on the evaluation itself are presented. Research papers present new work and unpublished results on the topic areas of the workshop. Research papers will be selected according to their novelty, quality, and relevance. *Position papers* are problem discussions or statements describing the author's relevant experience and ideas in regards to evaluation methods and methodologies for visualization. Position papers will be selected according to their importance and relevance for the workshop topics and how well they will fit the planned discussions. Both types of papers can be up to eight pages long but the length of a submission needs to correspond to its contribution. All papers will be peer-reviewed by members of the program committee as well as the organizers. We are currently working on making sure that we will be able to publish all accepted papers in the ACM digital library including the assignment of DOIs to the papers. We also plan to invite a selected subset of the papers to contribute to a special issue in a major visualization journal venue such as the Information Visualization Journal. Hi all, A very interesting position has become available at Luciad (www.luciad.com) for a motivated PhD student interested in visualization of very large geospatial data across time. In this project (a collaboration between Luciad and the KU Leuven) we will investigate how different visual abstractions can aid the analyst to identify unexpected patterns and e.g. non-normal behaviour in tracking data (for example from GPS sensors in smartphones, from ships, planes, etc), in a scalable way. The workshop aims at bringing together experts in IR and knowledge mapping in order to discuss the potential of interactive knowledge maps for information seeking purposes. Motivation, Goals, Objectives, Outcome: The success of an information system depends mainly on its ability to properly support interaction between users and information. Current information systems, however, show as a particular point of failure the vagueness between user search terms and the knowledge orders of the information space in question (Mayr et al. 2008, Mutschke et al. 2011). Studies in interactive information seeking behavior have confirmed that the ability to browse an information space and observe similarities and dissimilarities between information objects is crucial for accidental encountering and the creative use of information (Nicholas et al. 2004, Westerman et al. 2005). This is in particular true for heterogeneous information spaces within the open web. Some kind of guided searching therefore becomes more and more important in order to precisely discover information without knowing the right search terms. Yet, this seems to remain the weakest point of interactive information systems (Ford 2000, Foster 2004, Tang 2007). Knowledge mapping encompasses all attempts to use visualizations to gain insights into the structure and evolution of large-scale information spaces. Knowledge maps can take the form of network visualizations, treemaps or specific, map like arrangements of search results (cf. Börner et al. 2003, Shiffrin/Börner 2004, Börner 2010, Klavans/Boyack 2010, Skupin et al. 2013, Sahal et al. 2013, Boyack/Klavans 2013). As an activity performed in very different disciplines - and often independent from each other - it stands in line with the dominance of the visual in our culture (Manovich 2009). Knowledge maps of digital library collections are promising navigation tools through knowledge spaces but - to the best of our knowledge - still far away from being applicable for searching digital libraries. Most maps are made for special purposes, are static, and usually not interactive (Akdag Salah et al. 2012). In interactive information systems the use of visual elements to enhance information seeking and discovery is a recurring research issue. However, not much of the experiences made in knowledge mapping have ever been implemented in online interfaces to digital libraries and collections (Börner/Chen 2001), nor is there a stable and continuous knowledge exchange between the "map makers" on the one hand and the Information Retrieval (IR) specialists on the other hand. Thus, there is also a lack of models that properly combine insights of the two strands, which are driven by quite different epistemic perspectives. Our workshop aims at bringing together these two communities: experts in IR reflecting on visual enhanced search interfaces and experts in knowledge mapping reflecting on visualizations of the content of a collection that might also present - visually - a context for a search term. The intention of the workshop is to raise awareness of the potential of interactive knowledge maps for information seeking purposes and to create a common ground for experiments aiming at the incorporation of knowledge maps into IR models at the level of the user interface. The major focus of the workshop is on the question of how knowledge maps can be utilized for scholarly information seeking in large information spaces. Our interests include interactive IR, information seeking behavior, knowledge mapping, science modelling, information visualization, and digital libraries. The workshop is closely related to the COST action KNOWeSCAPE (Analyzing the dynamics of information and knowledge landscapes: http://knowescape.org) which aims at implementing new navigation and search strategies based on insights of the complex nature of knowledge spaces as well as visualization principles for knowledge maps. The long-term research goal is to develop and evaluate new approaches for combining knowledge mapping and IR. More specifically, we address questions such as: * What are appropriate interactive knowledge maps for IR systems * How can knowledge maps be utilized for information seeking purposes? * How to locate an information need on a knowledge map? * How can (visually enhanced) search interfaces to knowledge maps look like? * How can interaction with knowledge maps be transformed into IR tasks? * Can knowledge maps improve searching in large, in particular heterogeneous, cross-language, cross-domain information spaces? * And the other way around: Can insights from IR also improve knowledge mapping itself? The availability of new IR test collections that contain citation and bibliographic information like the iSearch collection (see Lykke et al. 2010) or the ACL collection (Ritchie et al. 2006) could deliver an interesting playground for developing or evaluating combined models of IR and knowledge mapping for scholarly searching. Topical Outline: To support the previously described goals the workshop topics include (but are not limited to) the following: * Knowledge maps for digital libraries * Knowledge orders of information spaces * Information seeking behaviour * Information discovery * Interactive IR systems * Human-computer IR * Knowledge Visualization in IR * Visual interfaces to information systems * Browsing and navigating information spaces * Task based user modelling, interaction and personalization * Evaluation of interactive IR systems. Types of Submissions: * Full Papers (6 to 8 pages): Full papers, describing advanced or completed work * Short Papers (4 pages): Position papers or work in progress * Poster and Demonstrations (2 pages): Poster and Presentation of systems or prototypes All submissions must be written in English following the Springer LNCS Author Guidelines (http://www.springer.com/lncs) and should be submitted as PDF files to EasyChair: https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=kmir2014. All submissions will be reviewed by at least two independent reviewers. At least one author per paper needs to register for the workshop and attend the workshop to present the work. CALL FOR NOMINATIONS The IEEE VGTC Doctoral Dissertation Competition http://vgtc.org/content/ieee-vgtc-doctoral-dissertation-competition DEADLINE: July 31, 2014 IEEE Visualization and Graphics Technical Committee (VGTC) is sponsoring the second annual Best Doctoral Dissertation Award program to recognize outstanding academic research and development in visualization and visual analytics. The dissertations must address a topic relevant to visualization or visual analytics. The competition will be administrated by the IEEE Visualization Pioneers Group (VPG)<http://vgtc.org/content/ieee-vgtc-visualization-pioneers-group> under the auspices of IEEE vgTC<http://vgtc.org/>. The IEEE VGTC VIS Pioneers Group Doctoral Dissertation Award is presented annually at the IEEE VPG Reception held at the IEEE VIS conference. ELIGIBILITY All English language dissertations that have been successfully defended between July 31, 2012 and July 31, 2014 are eligible for the 2014 competition. SUBMISSION LIMITATION There is no limitation on the number of nominations that may be made by a university. SUBMISSION DEADLINE Nomination packets must be received by 5pm PDT on July 31, 2014 to qualify for the 2014 competition. SELECTION PROCEDURE Five IEEE VPG members will form a review committee to thoroughly review and assess the dissertation submissions. The committee will judge the dissertations based on their intellectual merit, technical depth, and presentation quality. The selection committee will recommend the winning dissertation to the IEEE VGTC chair by October 1, 2014. MONETARY AWARD The winner of the IEEE VGTC VIS Pioneers Group Doctoral Dissertation Award will receive a monetary award of $500 provided by IEEE VGTC. Only one award will be given in 2014. In addition to a poster being displayed throughout IEEE VIS: • a two-page summary of your work will be published in the electronic Conference Proceedings • interactive poster sessions will provide a forum for presenting your work and discussing new ideas with your peers • a plenary fast-forward session will give you an opportunity to promote your work.
