These diagrams have become the foundations of various visual languages and have notably facilitated the modelling of, and logical reasoning about, complex systems. Over the years, they have been extensively used in areas such as biosciences, business, criminology and national security to intuitively visualize relationships and relative cardinalities of sets. This widespread adoption has allowed analysis of complex collections of data. The workshop will cover all aspects of Euler diagram research, including, but not limited to: Theoretical Advances: drawability, layouts, logic, reasoning, Software Support: diagram generation, automated reasoning, data exploration, Real-World Applications: system modelling, information visualization, education, Cognition and Perceptual Principles: readability, aesthetics and evaluation, including comparison to other representations. Recently, there have been significant advances in all of the above areas. This workshop of peer-reviewed submissions will afford the growing Euler diagrams community the opportunity to present and discuss new research, and share multi-interdisciplinary expertise. We envisage that this will stimulate collaborations on current and future research needs. This will be the second time the workshop has run as part of the Diagrams conference series and the fourth Euler diagrams workshop (after successful workshops in 2012, 2004 and 2005). The workshop will bring together researchers with diverse backgrounds, from both academia and industry including those with expertise in mathematic, computer science, artificial intelligence, information design, visualization, human-computer interaction, as well as end-users from various application area. We solicit submissions on the topics mentioned above, in the following forms: full papers (15 pages), consisting of: - original research - surveys short papers (7 pages), consisting of: - systems descriptions - software demonstrations - position statements - original research contributions All submissions should be in Springer’s LNCS format. The proceedings will be published by CEUR. [Apologies for cross-posting] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CALL FOR PAPERS -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2nd International Workshop on Immersive Volumetric Interaction (WIVI 2014) at IEEE Virtual Reality 2014, Minneapolis, MN, USA Saturday, March 29, 2014 1:30pm-5:00pm There is a growing interest in interaction research of volumes for immersive virtual environments and immersive visualizations. Traditional interaction modalities may not be sufficient to select and manipulate multiple objects or data points or have the potential to interfere with users’ sense of immersion or workflow. Additionally, there is a strong interest in scaling interfaces from the desktop display to higher immersive display systems. As a result, cost, availability, and familiarity all play a role in designing interaction. Solutions tend to be focused on separately in these communities, however this will serve as a common forum to openly discuss these issues and ideas for solutions. The IEEE VR 2014 Workshop on Immersive Volumetric Interaction is intended to bring together researchers, developers, and users from multiple communities in Virtual Environments, 3D User Interfaces, and Immersive Visualizations to discuss issues and share ideas that relate to the process, interaction modalities, hardware, software, interface constraints, and users’ goals and workflow as they relate to the problem of interacting with volumetric data in immersive visualizations and/or multiple objects defined as a volume in virtual environments. This half-day workshop will provide a forum for presentations and energized discussions to initial new and exciting developments in this area as well as connections for collaborations among multiple research disciplines. The program will consist of planned presentations of accepted papers and focused lively discussions. Possible issues for discussion, but not limited to, are natural user interfaces, interaction modalities, selection, manipulation, quality of immersion, physical and cognitive fatigue, low-cost immersive systems (input and output), user goals and workflow, and analysis tools. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SUBMISSIONS -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We invite novel submissions (papers up to 6 pages, minimum of 2 pages) describing positions, preliminary research or evaluation results, prototypes, design work, works-in-progress or applications focus on interaction with volumetric data in immersive visualizations and/or multiple objects representing a volume in virtual environments. Papers should be prepared using the IEEE Computer Society format. Submissions will be peer-reviewed and authors of accepted papers will be invited to present at the workshop. Demonstrations of prototype interfaces, interaction modalities, and interactive immersive systems are highly encouraged. --------------- Call for Papers --------------- The 1st International Workshop on Personalised Multilingual Information Access (PMIA 2014) http://www.cs.ubc.ca/~steichen/PMIA2014 held in conjunction with the 22nd Conference on User Modeling, Adaptation and Personalization (UMAP), Aalborg, Denmark, July 7-11, 2014. -------- Overview -------- With the unrelenting rise in global content production and usage, information systems increasingly need to handle 1) a growing variety of user differences (including language, culture, situational context), and 2) ever expanding heterogeneous and multilingual data sources (including corporate content, user-generated content, multimedia content). This full-day workshop aims tackle these challenges by bringing together researchers working on cross-/multilingual information access, multilingual semantic web, interactive search, information seeking, exploratory search, personalised search, personalisation for web and hypermedia, and recommender systems. The aim is to share, discuss, and combine ideas for novel solutions that support users according to their particular language abilities, as well as other characteristics (e.g. culture, domain expertise) and contexts (e.g. intent, topic) that influence what and how information should be retrieved, composed, and presented. The workshop aims to both advance the current state of the art in personalised multilingual information access, as well as to develop a detailed roadmap that identifies the most pressing current and future research challenges (e.g. novel information access interfaces, evaluation of complex systems). Themes of interest include, but are not limited to, the following areas: • Individual user characteristics that influence information access, e.g. language proficiency, culture, user intent, topic domain • Modeling of user profiles, e.g. multilingual data collection, model creation, model exploitation • Novel interfaces, e.g. result presentation beyond the ranked list paradigm, presentations of content in multiple languages on a single screen, document summarisation • Adaptive systems for personalised multilingual information access, e.g. personalised search, recommender systems • Tools and methods for multilingual and cross lingual search • Content analysis and processing, e.g. knowledge extraction, duplication detection • Content translation and localisation • Multilingual semantic web, including search and extraction • External knowledge resources for personalised multilingual information access (e.g. ontologies) • Domain modeling (e.g. adaptation to different domains) • Issues and dangers of personalisation, e.g. over-personalisation (also known as “the filter bubble”), privacy issues • Personalisation of multilingual tools • Evaluation methods and metrics for personalised information access, e.g. how to evaluate compositions from multiple languages, aggregate search evaluation. ----------- Submissions ----------- We encourage submissions from diverse backgrounds and aim to promote the exchange of ideas between researchers working in the above-mentioned areas. In addition, submissions that focus on non-English data, or research with a clear application in a multilingual scenario are equally welcome. We invite submissions of more established ideas and methods as long papers (8 pages), preliminary work as short papers (4 pages), and demo/poster papers (2 pages). Research Fellow in Information Visualisation and Human Computer Interaction University of St Andrews - School of Computer Science Vacancy Details: The HCI Group in the University of St Andrews (SACHI) wishes to recruit a Research Fellow in Information Visualisation and Human Computer Interaction to support a number of new and ongoing research projects. The post will be based in the School of Computer Science so particular expertise and background experience in programming, interface design, evaluation or novel user interface development would be an advantage. In addition, demonstrated experience in information visualisation, intelligent user interfaces, web applications or ubiquitous and pervasive computing would be highly advantageous. We have over twenty members in our group and we are strongly active in the international community organising conferences such as UIST 2013, ITS 2013 and MobileHCI 2014. We regularly publish in the leading international HCI venues including CHI, UIST, IUI, AVI, ITS, PerDis etc. As a group we have several funded projects, organise an international seminar series, host visitors regularly and maintain a HCI lab with a wide range of equipment. RESEARCH TRACK Peer reviewed, original, and principled research papers addressing both the theory and practice of User Modeling, Adaptation and Personalization. Papers will be assessed based on the originality and significance of the presented contribution to the research field, as well as their technical soundness and overall readability. - Long research papers (12 pages): Long research papers should present original reports of substantive new research. WORKSHOP PROPOSALS AVI 2014 will be a forum for workshops on emerging as well as established topics relevant to interface research and practice. The aims of workshops are to offer an opportunity to meet in the context of a focused and interactive discussion, to develop understanding, to exchange experiences, to build research communities and to pave the ground towards future developments. Workshops should ideally foster discussion and exchange rather than being miniaturized conference sessions. Workshops will be held on Tuesday May 27, 2014. A workshop may be half-day or full day in length, and typically have 15 to 20 participants. The extended abstract of the workshops and a selection of the best position papers will appear in the conference proceedings and in the ACM Digital Library.
