Visit www.vizsec.org for more information. The BELIV workshop series (http://www.beliv.org) is a bi-annual event focusing on the challenges of evaluation in visualization. The commonly used evaluation metrics such as task time completion and number of errors appear insufficient to quantify the quality of a visualization system; BELIV 2014 aims at gathering researchers in all fields of visualization to continue the exploration of novel evaluation methods, and to structure the knowledge on evaluation in visualization around a schema, where researchers can easily identify unsolved problems and research gaps. The VAST Contest will provide realistic problems and datasets to showcase the effectiveness of tools and methods in the domain of visual analytics. The contest collects several entries of varying complexity, aimed at allowing students, researchers, practitioners, and industry to benchmark their tools in a replicated way. LOCATION To celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2014, IEEE VIS comes for the first time in its history to Europe and the city of Paris, acknowledging the growing role of European research on visualization. IEEE VIS 2014 http://ieeevis.org/ CALL FOR TUTORIALS http://ieeevis.org/year/2014/info/call-participation/tutorials Tutorials are intended to cover a wide selection of topics related to IEEE VIS 2014 and provide background on new tools and application domains necessary for research in data and information visualization and visual analytics. Tutorial attendees come from diverse backgrounds, including volume visualization and rendering, information visualization and data analytics, high performance computing, and scientific application communities. We are soliciting half-day tutorial proposals in the areas of visualization systems, mathematical foundations, methods, and application areas. We welcome course proposals that introduce emerging technologies to the visualization community, as well as proposals on more traditional visualization topics. Topics can include--but are not limited to--any of those listed in the calls for papers for VAST, InfoVis, and SciVis. Tutorials with an application focus are also encouraged. TUTORIAL DETAILS Proposals will be evaluated on the basis of the tutorial's importance and suitability for presentation in a tutorial format, the past experience and qualifications of the instructors, the overall balance in the tutorial program, and the likely attendance of the tutorial. All tutorial proposals should include: * The level of the tutorial (beginning, intermediate, or advanced) * An abstract of the tutorial topic * A description of the tutorial's organization including time allocation and outline for major course topics (500 word minimum) * The background and contact information for each instructor. Proposals should not exceeed two (maximum three) pages, and should be submitted via PCS. Please note the formatting guidelines when preparing your submission. Geospatial visual analytics has a tendency to emphasize the spatial components of geographic information. At this workshop we encourage approaches that utilize and emphasize the temporal characteristics of geographic information, consider geographic and temporal information at multiple scales, use interactive and dynamic displays in visual analytics. The theme for the workshop is the use of GeoVisual Analytics approaches for exploring and analysing large data sets with spatial and/or temporal components. Original papers are solicited in this area with innovative papers detailing tight integration of visualization, data mining, database processing, optimization and other computational processing particularly encouraged. A special issue of CaGIS is planned as a consequence. The workshop will give participants the chance to present ongoing and developing work without committing to a full journal paper. The journal special issue will provide selected participants with the opportunity of reporting their work in a refereed journal. Traditional interaction modalities may not be sufficient to select and manipulate multiple objects or data points or have the potential to interfere with users' sense of immersion or workflow. Additionally, there is a strong interest in scaling interfaces from the desktop display to higher immersive display systems. As a result, cost, availability, and familiarity all play a role in designing interaction. Solutions tend to be focused on separately in these communities, however this will serve as a common forum to openly discuss these issues and ideas for solutions. The IEEE VR 2014 Workshop on Immersive Volumetric Interaction is intended to bring together researchers, developers, and users from multiple communities in Virtual Environments, 3D User Interfaces, and Immersive Visualizations to discuss issues and share ideas that relate to the process, interaction modalities, hardware, software, interface constraints, and users' goals and workflow as they relate to the problem of interacting with volumetric data in immersive visualizations and/or multiple objects defined as a volume in virtual environments. This half-day workshop will provide a forum for presentations and energized discussions to initial new and exciting developments in this area as well as connections for collaborations among multiple research disciplines. The program will consist of planned presentations of accepted papers and focused lively discussions. IEEE VIS 2014 http://ieeevis.org/ CALL FOR POSTERS - PRACTITIONER EXPERIENCES TRACK http://ieeevis.org/year/2014/info/call-participation/practitioner-experienc… We invite the submission of posters describing state-of-the-art, real world experiences in industry, government, NGOs, social agencies, etc. with designing, building, deploying and evaluating new information visualization and visual analytic systems. Posters should present case studies of success, failure, experimentation, design, development, methodology, best practice lessons and other topics relevant to a commercial, government or operational context. Discussion could include one or more of what were the business or service objectives, who were the users, what were their needs, what were the design objectives, what technology was developed, what was the result, how did it perform, what were the lessons learned and what are the next steps? No need to name specific clients, customers or programs, you can use indicators such as 'a large investment bank' or 'a top 10 pharmaceutical company' or 'health services'. This is an excellent opportunity to discuss your results, get feedback from the VIS community, and brainstorm new ideas relevant to your situation. Poster presentations will be an integral part of the conference, with a session for interactive discussion between presenters and attendees, plus a fast-forward presentation track where authors can orally present a brief summary of their work to all conference attendees. Note that, in order to maintain interactive and exciting poster presentations, we require at least one presenter per accepted poster to attend the conference. The most important publication criteria are originality, quality of presentation and relevance. Poster submissions must be in English. The submission must include a 2-page abstract, plus a draft of the final poster. A one paragraph summary may be in another language of your choice. Please be aware that the poster draft is mandatory. All submitted materials must be in PDF format with embedded fonts. How to efficiently and effectively support implicit and/or explicit Crowdsourcing and Human Computation tasks is still an open research question. The goal of the CrowdUI workshop is to gather researchers and practitioners in the diverse fields related to the integration, interaction and visualization of data to explore the feasibility of using and combining different approaches to create effective user interfaces and usage experience for applications relying on, or producing crowdsourced data. Recent years witnessed an explosion in the number and variety of data crowdsourcing initiatives. From OpenStreetMap to Amazon Mechanical Turk, developers and practitioners have been striving to create user interfaces able to effectively and efficiently support the creation, exploration, and analysis of crowdsourced information. A representative example comes from the fields of Smart Cities and Human Mobility: there, new breeds of (mobile) human computation applications and games-with-a-purpose employ new interaction paradigms for the collection and retrieval of urban-related data. On the other hand, analysts and other urban stakeholders are provided with application that fused multiple datasources together in order to support sensemaking and knowledge-extraction processes for decision- making. The extensive usage of crowdsourcing techniques brings a major change of paradigm with respect to traditional user interface for data collection and exploration, as effectiveness, speed, and interaction quality concerns play a central role in supporting very demanding incentives, including monetary ones. At this purpose, cross fertilization between different disciplines is mandatory: existing approaches for visual interfaces design and implementation, data visualization and interaction methodologies, crowdsourced data management, and human computation task design should be merged with the purpose of identifying the best interaction and visualization paradigms for crowd-driven data collection, analysis, and exploration applications. =================================================== UMAP 2014 Doctoral Consortium - Call for Papers =================================================== 22nd International Conference on User Modeling, Adaptation, and Personalization - Aalborg, Denmark, 7-11 July, 2014 um.org/umap2014 ABOUT THE DOCTORAL CONSORTIUM =================================================== The UMAP 2014 Conference, following a tradition started in 1994, will include a Doctoral Consortium Session, which provides an opportunity for doctoral students to explore and develop their research interests under the guidance of a panel of distinguished research faculty. Doctoral students are invited to apply to present their research to scholars and researchers in the field who will provide constructive comments about their work. The doctoral consortium is implemented as a student mentoring program that introduces students to senior researchers in the relevant fields. Students are expected to document in a brief submission their doctoral research (see SUBMISSION INFORMATION for further details), which will be evaluated by the consortium committee. Good quality applications will be selected to be presented at a dedicated workshop as part of the conference. Promising, but less well-developed applications will be selected for presentation at a poster session. Each student with an accepted application will be assigned a mentor who will provide feedback on the student's work and will discuss the doctoral research with the student and the audience at the consortium.
