------------------------------------------------------------------ CfP: Overcoming Cognitive Biases workshop http://ocbworkshop.dbvis.de/ ------------------------------------------------------------------ This one-day workshop will be held as part of i-KNOW 2014 (14th International Conference on Knowledge Technologies and Data-driven Business),in Graz, Austria, 16-19 September 2014. http://i-know.tugraz.at IMPORTANT DATES - Submission by: 16 April, 2014 - Notifications of acceptance :16 May 2014 - Camera Ready Copy: 5 June 2014 - Workshop day: 16 or 17 September 2014 SCOPE OF THE WORKSHOP The goal of this workshop is to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners to discuss how to reduce the impact of cognitive biases in the systems we build. Work to date has generally focussed on developing user training to mitigate the effect of a small number of cognitive biases with little effort on software solutions. The latter not only requires research to identify situations where help would assist in better decision making, but also in developing novel corrective actions ideally tailored to the user. In the visualisation domain, work has centred around improving hypothesis generation to avoid confirmation bias, where the user unconsciously seeks evidence to confirm what they already believe, rather than seeking disconfirming evidence. There is plenty of scope for investigating whether or not the cognition of visualisation or elements therein are subject to cognitive biases. We invite participants from a wide range of disciplines such as decision science, cognitive psychology, information visualisation, visual analytics, software engineering, business and intelligence to exchange ideas and establish a roadmap of the state of the art and promote future research potential. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - cognitive biases and information visualisation - new classification schemes for cognitive biases - integrating cognitive bias mitigation into existing software - measuring susceptibility to cognitive bias - cognitive biases in groups/collaborative situations - training/learning tools to overcome particular cognitive biases - business decision making - impact of big data on cognitive biases - evaluation techniques/methodologies The workshop will include invited talks, short individual presentations and group activities and will provide a forum for participants to exchange ideas and establish a roadmap of the state of the art and identify future research potential. We hope to grow this interdisciplinary community to promote future collaboration. SUBMISSIONS We invite authors to submit original work, as either 2-3 page position papers or 4-6 page research papers. All submissions will be peer-reviewed and judged on the basis of originality, contribution to the field, technical and presentation quality, and relevance to the workshop. Accepted papers will be published in the supplementary proceedings of i-KNOW 2014 (either ACM or IEEE). Call for Participation The IEEE VGTC International Data-Visualization Contest Contest Theme: Visualization-Now I See It! http://vgtc.org/content/ieee-vgtc-international-data-visualization-contest DEADLINE: Monday, Sept 1, 2014 The IEEE Visualization and Graphics Technical Committee (VGTC)<http://vgtc.org/> is sponsoring its first International Data-Visualization Contest to recognize outstanding design in visualization and visual analytics from around the world. The 2014 contest theme is "Visualization-Now I See It!" The contest will be administrated by the IEEE Visualization Pioneers Group (VPG)<http://vgtc.org/content/ieee-vgtc-visualization-pioneers-group> under the auspices of IEEE VGTC. The award will be announced at the IEEE VPG Reception to be held at the IEEE VIS 2014<http://ieeevis.org/> conference. You are not required to attend either the VIS 2014 conference or the VPG reception to participate in the contest. Eligibility All visualization and visual analytics designers, developers, researchers, and practitioners from business, academia, and government sectors around the world are eligible to participate. Submissions cannot promote a commercial product. Submission Limitation Contestants may be lead author on no more than 3 submissions to the 2014 contest. They may be a co-author of any number of submissions. Submission Deadline Nomination packets must be received by 5pm PDT on Monday, September 1, 2014 to qualify for the 2014 contest. Selection Procedure All active IEEE VPG members<http://vgtc.org/content/vis-pioneers-group-vpg-members> who do not make a submission to the contest will be invited to participate in the first-round review. The top contest submissions from this first-round review will undergo a second round of reviews conducted by five distinguished IEEE VPG members representing different backgrounds, who will be chosen jointly by the VGTC and VPG chairs. The 5-member selection committee will thoroughly review and assess the top contest submissions based on communication effectiveness and design originality. The selection committee will submit their recommendation for best visualization to the IEEE VGTC chair by Monday, Oct 27, 2014. Monetary Award Along with a certificate, the winner of the IEEE/VGTC VIS Pioneers Group Best Data-Visualization Award will receive a check for $500 USD. Only one monetary award will be given in 2014. Submission Details The 2014 contest accepts only static visualizations in the form of an image. Provenance information can be a resource for "reflection-in-action" during analysis, supporting collaboration between analysts, and reporting to decision makers. It can also act as a resource after the event, supporting the interpretation of claims, audit, accountability and training. There has been considerable work on capturing and visualizing of "data provenance", which focuses on data collection and computation, and "analytic provenance", which captures the interactive data exploration and reasoning process. However, there is limited work of utilizing such provenance information to support sensemaking, in terms of improving efficacy and avoiding pitfalls such as issues of data quality and human bias. This workshop aims to bring together researchers involved in visual analytics and various aspects of sensemaking to consider emerging positions, questions, and findings related to the capture, processing, representation and use of provenance information to support complex sensemaking tasks. The emphasis is on discussion and collaboration, with a goal of collaboratively producing a paper describing the state-of-the-art of provenance for sensemaking following the workshop. These deviations are known as cognitive biases. Heuristics allow us to make “good enough” decisions without expending all of our cognitive effort on the task, however, in critical decision environments, “good enough” is often NOT good enough. Visualization tools are increasingly adept at making sense of complex data, but researchers who study cognitive biases have come to realize that the quality of decisions made with these tools are often impaired because tool designers fail to address how heuristics and biases operate in a human-computer interactive setting. Despite decades of research on cognitive biases in controlled settings, there is yet no “recipe book” for experimentally-validated tools and techniques to avoid judgment biases when building tools for solving complex problems in the real world. As well as considering software mitigation solutions, we would also like to explore whether the way we visualize data is subject to cognitive biases. We invite participants from a wide range of disciplines such as information visualization, visual analytics, software engineering, cognitive psychology and decision science, as well as those close to end-user groups like intelligence analysts, to explore some of the ways in which biases impact user performance and share ideas and experiences about practical ways to reduce or overcome these potentially harmful effects. Our keynote speaker (Alberto Cairo,University of Miami) will open the conferences on Tuesday morning and our capstone speaker (Barbara Tversky, Stanford University & Columbia University) will close the meeting on Friday. Additionally, the LDAV Symposium occurs on Sunday and Monday before the conferences, as do a number of other workshops and tutorials. These records are an invaluable data source for clinical research and improvement of clinical quality, as they provide longitudinal health information about patient populations. The use of EHR databases could be dramatically improved if easy-to-use interfaces allowed clinical researchers and quality improvement analysts to explore complex patterns in order to build and test hypotheses regarding the benefits, risks, and appropriateness of treatments or medication regimens. Novel strategies in information visualization and visual analytics are needed. The interest in this topic is growing at a very rapid pace and is interdisciplinary by nature, both in term of field (medicine and computer science) but also research environment (academic research as well as industry and government agencies). Because of the European location of the conference, we have a unique opportunity to create bridges and explore new collaborations between groups that would not meet otherwise. In spite of substantial advance in various visualization techniques, our understanding on how well these advanced visualizations are comprehended by users, or what we call “visualization literacy,” is quite limited. As a sequel to the visualization literacy workshop in EuroVis (https://www.kth.se/profile/178785/page/eurovis-2014-workshop-towards-visual…) this workshop will investigate the visualization literacy problem. Unlike other workshops that promote discussion around position papers, this workshop will be based on actual participation of creating visualization literacy measures. The organizers will prepare a web-based platform, and participants can actually create questions to test visualization literacy, solve others’ questions, and discuss around questions. We believe that such hands-on experiences will greatly promote the quality of discussion as well as come closer to having a tangible visualization literacy measuring tool.
