Extended Deadline: Monday, Sept 29, 2014 --- Call for Participation The IEEE VGTC International Data-Visualization Contest Contest Theme: Visualization-Now I See It! http://vgtc.org/content/ieee-vgtc-international-data-visualization-contest DEADLINE: Monday, Sept 29, 2014 The IEEE Visualization and Graphics Technical Committee (VGTC)<http://vgtc.org/> is sponsoring its first International Data-Visualization Contest to recognize outstanding design in visualization and visual analytics from around the world. The 2014 contest theme is "Visualization-Now I See It!" The contest will be administrated by the IEEE Visualization Pioneers Group (VPG)<http://vgtc.org/content/ieee-vgtc-visualization-pioneers-group> under the auspices of IEEE VGTC. The award will be announced at the IEEE VPG Reception to be held at the IEEE VIS 2014<http://ieeevis.org/> conference. You are not required to attend either the VIS 2014 conference or the VPG reception to participate in the contest. Eligibility All visualization and visual analytics designers, developers, researchers, and practitioners from business, academia, and government sectors around the world are eligible to participate. Submissions cannot promote a commercial product. Submission Limitation Contestants may be lead author on no more than 3 submissions to the 2014 contest. They may be a co-author of any number of submissions. Submission Deadline Nomination packets must be received by 5pm PDT on Monday, September 1, 2014 to qualify for the 2014 contest. Selection Procedure All active IEEE VPG members<http://vgtc.org/content/vis-pioneers-group-vpg-members> who do not make a submission to the contest will be invited to participate in the first-round review. The top contest submissions from this first-round review will undergo a second round of reviews conducted by five distinguished IEEE VPG members representing different backgrounds, who will be chosen jointly by the VGTC and VPG chairs. The 5-member selection committee will thoroughly review and assess the top contest submissions based on communication effectiveness and design originality. The selection committee will submit their recommendation for best visualization to the IEEE VGTC chair by Monday, Oct 27, 2014. Monetary Award Along with a certificate, the winner of the IEEE/VGTC VIS Pioneers Group Best Data-Visualization Award will receive a check for $500 USD. Only one monetary award will be given in 2014. Submission Details The 2014 contest accepts only static visualizations in the form of an image. The contest participant should email the submission package to ieeevpg(a)googlegroups.com<mailto:ieeevpg@googlegroups.com>. The package will include: 1. A pdf file that contains: a. Title of the data-visualization contest submission b. Name, affiliation, email address, and postal address of the participant c. Abstracts - September 8, 2014, 23:59:59 PDT Long and short paper submission - September, 18 2014, 23:59:59 PDT Deadline s will be strictly enforced. ********************************************************** Call for Participation IEEE VR 2015 23-27 March 2015 Arles, Camargue, Provence, France IEEE VR 2015 seeks original, high-quality paper s in all areas related to virtual reality, including augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), and 3D user interfaces. Each paper should be classifiable as mainly covering research, applications, or systems, using the following guidelines for each: Research paper s should describe results that contribute to advances in state-of-the-art software, hardware, algorithms, interaction, or human factors. Application paper s should explain how the authors built upon existing ideas and applied them to solve an interesting problem in a novel way. Each paper should include an evaluation of the success of the use of VR /AR/MR in the given application domain. System paper s should indicate how the implementers integrated known techniques and technologies to produce an effective system, a long with any lessons learned in the process. Each paper should include an evaluation of the research, including benchmarking that was performed (e.g., latency or frame-rate). Topics include: Immersive gaming 3D interaction for VR /AR/MR Input devices for VR /AR/MR Haptics, audio, and other non-visual interfaces VR systems and toolkits Augmented and mixed reality Computer graphics techniques for VR /AR/MR Advanced display technology Immersive projection technology Multi-user and distributed VR /AR/MR Serious games Tracking and sensing Modeling and simulation User studies and evaluation Perception, presence, and cognition 3D selection and 3D manipulation Locomotion and navigation in virtual environments Applications of VR /AR/MR Teleoperation and telepresence This year, we will continue the process of having all accepted long paper s published in a special issue of IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (TVCG). To meet TVCG standards, long paper s will undergo a two-stage review process (see SUBMISSION DEADLINE S below). Authors of long paper s that are determined to be acceptable with minor revisions during a first review cycle will be invited to submit a revised version for a second review cycle. Only long paper s that are accepted in this second review cycle will appear in the journal issue and be presented at the conference. Short paper s can cover preliminary studies, prototype applications, or initial implementations. Short paper s will be published separately in the standard conference proceedings. The primary difference between short and long paper s is in the size of their contributions and NOT in the importance/impact of their contributions. To assure this, short and long paper s will be treated as separate tracks and will be accepted or rejected according to the merit of their contributions. In general, rejected long paper s will NOT be considered for acceptance as short paper s, unless the reviewers unanimously feel this is the right decision, and rewriting is determined to be doable in the time available. Consequently, authors should carefully consider the category for each submitted paper . Note that an abstract must be uploaded prior to the paper . This facilitates assigning reviewers, as the review process is on a tight schedule. All paper submissions must be in English. Long paper s must not exceed ten (10) pages in length, with the caveat that the standard is eight (8) pages. Short paper s must not exceed six (6) pages in length. If the reviewers find a paper overly long for the size of its contribution, they may ask for it to be short ened it if it is accepted. Both long and short paper s should be formatted using the IEEE Computer Society format described at http://www.cs.sfu.ca/~vis/Track/vr-menu.html . IEEE VR uses a double-blind review process, meaning both the authors and the reviewers remain anonymous to each other. Submissions (including citations and optional videos) should not contain information that unnecessarily identifies the authors, their institutions, or their places of work. Relevant previous work by the authors should be cited in the third person to preserve anonymity. In order to fully explain the relationship between the submitted paper and relevant previous work by the authors, authors may additionally upload previous paper s as well as a non-anonymous letter of explanation; these materials will only been seen by the primary reviewer. All paper s must be submitted electronically. Authors may also submit videos to aid the program committee in reviewing their submissions. Videos must be submitted according to the instructions at the conference website. Videos submitted with paper s will automatically be considered for possible inclusion in the video proceedings (video submissions may also be made independently, as described in the “Call for Videos”). When submitted as supporting material, videos must be free of identifying information. If accepted for the video proceedings, a revised version will be requested. Paper submissions must not have been previously published. A paper is considered to have been previously published if it has appeared in a peer-reviewed journal, magazine, book, or meeting proceedings that is reliably and permanently available afterward in print or electronic form to non-attendees, regardless of the language of that publication. A paper identical or substantially similar in content (in its entirety or in part) to one submitted to VR should not be simultaneously under consideration for another conference or journal during the entire VR review process, from the submission deadline until notifications of decisions are emailed to authors. THE ARCHIVE OF DIGITAL ART (ADA) FEATURES PAOLO CIRIO Check it out: www.digitalartarchive.at The Archive of Digital Art (ADA) features the hacktivist and acclaimed artist, Paolo CIRIO. The new artist feature of the ADA introduces selected artists who are represented in the online archive. It will offer insights into current developments of digital art and the importance of its documentation. In recent years, CIRIO has caused commotion among global companies like Google, Amazon and Facebook by exploiting their technical and economic practices and their strategic exploitation of private data. At the intersection of artistic intervention, social commitment and technological expertise, Cirio was able to unveil the vulnerabilities of international enterprises and politics. Distinguished artworks like “Street Ghosts” (2012), “Persecuting US” (2012), and “P2P Gift Credit Card – Gift Finance” (2010) dealt with issues like privacy and personal data, the international finance markets, copyright and intellectual property, democracy and political participation, and the contemporary surveillance society. In a genuine and highly creative way, Cirio constantly raises awareness for breaking boundaries between personal and corporate spaces and the ethics of contemporary image cultures. Lanfranco ACETI: “Cirio’s realm of artistic activities is based on a critique of contemporary society that touches and rattles, as much as an artwork can, the smooth operations of international corporations.” Christiane PAUL: “As a leading force in ‘hacktivist’ art, Paolo Cirio has shed light on the ways in which today’s networked platforms of data aggregation and social media, from Facebook to e-commerce sites, are shaping the public and private realms.” CIRIO also will receive this years “Prix Ars Electronica” for his hacktivist project “Loophole for all”, which exposed the identities of over 200,000 companies that took advantage of the tax system on the Cayman Islands. For a small amount of money, “Loophole for all” offers these real identities to anyone in order to ‘democratize’ the tax and legal restrictions and to intervene in the global, yet crooked, practices of the financial market. MOST EXTENSIVE DOCUMENTATION OF DIGITAL ART The Archive of Digital Art provides an extensive, constantly evolving documentation of Cirio’s and hundreds of leading artists’ oeuvre. ADA archives artist statements, work descriptions, literature and information on exhibitions and offers high resolution images, blueprints and videos. The large assortment of information on Cirio and his artworks was carried out by the artist in assistance with members of the ADA community. The new ADA web tool allows artists, scholars and scientists to actively contribute to the archive and to work collaboratively on the documentation and analysis of digital art. EXPANDED DOCUMENTATION FOR THE NEEDS OF DIGITAL ART Due to the processual, ephemeral, interactive, technology-based and fundamentally context-dependent character of digital art, it is at risk for becoming extinct without an adequate documentation. Therefore, the ADA is based on an expanded concept of documentation, which takes account of the specific conditions of digital art. THE ARCHIVE OF DIGITAL ART – PIONEER IN THE FIELD Since its foundation in 1999, the Archive of Digital Art (former Database of Virtual Art) has become the most important scholarly online archive for media art. PARTICIPATION: The workshop is open to all VIS 2014 attendees FOR INQUIRIES: Yvonne Jansen <yvja(a)di.ku.dk> The Desktop computer is dead. Monitors sit on desks, unplugged – hosting layers of Post-It notes or gathering dust as retro emergency low-light mirrors. Visualization is colorful, big, tangible, nosy, interactive, compelling and everywhere. It supports all sorts of creative activity and is key to problem solving in education, science, government and industry. But how? What is your ‘imagined future’ for visualization? We will be exploring possible visualization futures with short but rich scenarios in which designers, practitioners and researchers creatively explore opportunities for `beyond-the-desktop’ visualization. We will be discussing these and using them, and other means of engaging with the future, to develop the community’s perspective on the VIS of tomorrow and beyond. In particular, we want to discuss open questions such as: – how do we envision visualization systems in the next 5, 10, 25+ years? – is it possible that desktop systems will indeed die out and that visualizations will be primarily used through off-desktop technology? – what would be the consequences of a concerted community focus on non-desktop visualization? – which advances would make such a radical change possible? – how and where are the use of beyond-the-desktop displays most appropriate? What datasets are most amenable to different types of displays? Is beyond the desktop right for everyone (e.g., scientists, big data analysts, social networkers, artists, shopping mall users)? – what is the role and interplay of interaction and novel interaction displays in “beyond-the-desktop” settings? Can these two considerations be treated separately as research directions? – what kind of social settings are possible and best supported by “beyond-the-desktop” visualizations? What kind of collaborations are afforded and best supported? – is there a better name for this research theme than “beyond-the-desktop”? What are unifying features of these currently non-standard displays that could lead to a better descriptor for this research direction? can we develop a vision for visualization that helps to set goals for research to come? HOW TO PARTICIPATE We want to collect imaginative, creative, (even crazy) ideas and speculations on: – future designs and representations for beyond-the-desktop visualizations serving any of a variety of purposes – interaction techniques that take place in the physical world, or using paradigms outside the “mouse and keyboard” setting – technological solutions that could be utilized for beyond-desktop visualizations in the future – collaboration and social interaction around non-desktop visualizations – comparative experiences of visualizations on desktop and outside the desktop visualizations – authoring methods for beyond-desktop visualizations We encourage submissions in a variety of different formats: SCENARIOS - submission deadline: OCT 12 Share your imagined future in the form of scenarios illustrating future uses and forms of visualization whether desired, difficult, droll, dystopian - or all of these - we encourage an imaginative range of scenarios. 1+ pages in - upload directly through our webform at http://beyond.wallviz.dk [requirement to be considered for co-authorship of follow-up publications - see workshop outcomes] SHORT STATEMENTS & SKETCHES - submission phase: OCTOBER – NOVEMBER We invite everybody to engage in a pre-conference idea exchange on the workshop website through various means. We will enable a webform to allow submissions such as – imaginary titles and abstracts – short videos – graphical mockups, e.g., in the form of sketches or drawings. WORKSHOP ACTIVITIES The workshop will be split in 3 parts: – short presentations (up to 3min) similar to the fast-forward session to get a quick overview of the richness of ideas – discussion of future perspectives in the area of beyond-desktop visualization. The goal is to identify open problems requiring further investigations, and to converge on a research agenda or a vision for the future of visualization. – hands-on: creation of a wall-sized physical timeline of futures by workshop participants to visualize the outcomes of the discussions together with pre-conference submissions (see possible ways to participate) In conjunction with planned exhibits for the 25 year anniversary of VIS, we also plan to exhibit the created physical hypothetical timeline. After the workshop, this timeline will be publicly presented as a continuation next or near the exhibit for the past 25 years. All conference attendees are then invited to add their own thoughts and visions for the future of visualization. OUTCOMES Before the conference: from 1st October, everybody is invited to post ‘a future’ on this website be it a short scenario, a sketch, a video, or a paper title or abstract for a future article, or … Until 12th October scenarios can be submitted - authors can choose whether they want their contribution to be named or anonymous and whether they would like it to be available on the website or just at the workshop. During the conference: workshop participants work towards the creation of a physical timeline visualizing the variety of proposed futures. Posts from the website will be integrated there as well. After the conference: together with the outcome of the open discussions, the collection of visions will be published in a technical report or summarized in a more prestigious publication (e.g. a visualization viewpoint article) to make it more widely available. We will also explore the opportunity to write a STAR report on beyond-the-desktop visualizations together with interested workshop participants. Second Call For Papers 2014 IEEE VIS International Workshop on 3DVis: Does 3D really make sense for Data Visualization? Context * The aim of this workshop is to discuss 3D display and 3D user interfaces for scientific and information visualization and Visual Analytics. * As such, it is interesting to analyze the state of the art in 3D visualization and associated interaction. It is also the good place to review how 3D displays and user interfaces match human perceptual, cognitive and motor capabilities. * Indeed, it is the heart of the 2D vs. 3D debate. On the one hand, 3D technologies provide additional options for display and interaction, which broadens the space of potential solutions considerably. Consequently, many 3D visualization approaches have been implemented. The recent introduction of low-cost virtual and augmented reality hardware further paves the way towards a deeper exploration of the design space for 3D visualization. Moreover, better consistency in terms of dimensions between the visualization and interaction may also improve the immersion and navigation in huge amounts of data. * On the other hand, the experimental results from studies that investigate the differences between 2D and 3D visualization interfaces provide no real evidence for the claimed benefits of 3D technologies. Thus, the current body of literature provides at best inconclusive guidance on the benefits of 3D approaches. Moreover, a deep consideration of human abilities and capabilities identifies a potential mismatch with full 3D user interfaces. Yet, there may be a bias in the evaluations, as the prevalent visualization and interaction techniques in all areas of visualization are based on non-immersive technologies. * In this workshop, we would like to present evidence for both sides of this debate, and also provide directions for future work. Description * This workshop is a satellite event of the IEEE VIS 2014 conference: http://ieeevis.org/ * Although 3D interfaces may add additional possibilities for data representation as well as more natural interaction, current experimental results are inconclusive and the adoption of 3D methods by end users is rare. * This 2D vs. 3D debate, far from having a final answer, is the focus of this workshop. * New low-cost 3D systems make this technology accessible to everyone and also enable new modes of interaction. This has the potential to facilitate interaction with huge data sets. CALL FOR PAPERS (Submission: September 19, 2014) Visualizations and User Interfaces for Knowledge Engineering and Linked Data Analytics International Workshop at EKAW 2014, 19th International Conference on Knowledge Engineering and Knowledge Management November 24 or 25, 2014, Linköping, Sweden http://linkedscience.org/events/visual2014/ Motivation and Objectives ========== With data continuously generated as a result of daily activities within organizations and new data sources (sensor streams, linked datasets, etc.) introduced within knowledge management, the growth of information is unprecedented. Providing knowledge engineers and data analysts with visualizations and well-designed user interfaces can significantly support understanding of the concepts, data instances and relationships of different domains. The development of appropriate visualizations and user interfaces is a challenging task, given the size and complexity of the information that needs to be displayed and the varied backgrounds of the users. Further challenges emerge from technological developments and diverse application contexts. There is no "one size fits all" solution but the various use cases demand different visualization and interaction techniques. Ultimately, providing better visualizations and user interfaces will foster user engagement and likely lead to higher-quality results in different areas of knowledge engineering and linked data analytics. This full-day workshop will be divided into two half-day tracks, one in the morning and the other in the afternoon, each focusing on one of the two workshop themes. Track 1: Visualizations and User Interfaces for Knowledge Engineering ========== Visualizations and user interfaces are an integral part of knowledge engineering. They help to bridge the gap between domain experts and data management, and are essential to handle the increasing diversity of knowledge that is being modeled in ontologies, ensuring that it is easily accessible to a wide community. As knowledge-based systems and ontologies grow in size and complexity, the demand for comprehensive visualization and optimized interaction also rises. A number of knowledge visualizations have become available in recent years, with some being already well-established, particularly in the field of ontology development. In other areas of knowledge engineering, such as ontology alignment and debugging, although several tools have recently been developed, few have a user interface, not to mention navigational aids or comprehensive visualization techniques. Other activities, such as data integration, rely on the relationships between the concepts of different ontologies, which not only multiplies the number of objects to be displayed but also compounds the problem with the portrayal of different kinds of relationships between concepts. Topics of interest in this track include (but are not limited to): - visualizations for (large and complex) ontologies - user interfaces for ontology alignment and debugging - visualizations and user interfaces for non-experts - applications of novel interaction techniques (e.g. touch and gesture interaction) - user interfaces for mobile knowledge engineering - requirements analysis for visualizations in knowledge engineering - user interfaces assisting people with disabilities - knowledge visualizations for large displays and high resolutions - user interfaces for collaborative knowledge engineering - case studies of applying visualizations in knowledge engineering - user interfaces and visualizations for linked data - context-aware visualization and interaction techniques Track 2: Visualizations and User Interfaces for Linked Data Analytics ========== New and traditional knowledge practices, digitization of organizational processes, high performance computing and affordable datastores create an unprecedented amount of data as a part of daily organizational activities, at break-neck speed in a variety of formats. Conventional systems struggle to capture, store and analyze such dynamic and large scale data continuously generated. On its own, raw data has little value, but its value and significance is only unleashed when the data is extracted, processed and interpreted. Visual Analytics attempts to address this challenge by harmoniously combining the strengths of human processing and electronic data processing. While semi-automated processes result in generating visualizations, humans can use visual processing and interactions to quickly identify trends, patterns and anomalies from large volumes of visual data. The growing challenges of analyzing big data, social media, linked data, and data streams have created an excellent opportunity for research in Visual Analytics. Topics of interest in this track include (but are not limited to): - interactive semantic systems - design of interactive systems - visual pattern discovery - (semi-)automatic hypothesis generation - augmented human reasoning - novel visualizations of data and metadata - visual approaches for semantic similarity measurement - exploratory information visualization - domain-specific visual analytics - interactive systems in business intelligence - cognition and sensemaking in visual contexts - evaluation of interactive systems Submission Guidelines ========== Paper submission and reviewing for this workshop will be electronic via EasyChair. The papers should be written in English, following Springer LNCS format, and be submitted in PDF.
