This study was commissioned by CISE’s Division of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure (ACI) in 2013 to examine priorities and trade-offs for advanced computing in support of NSF-supported science and engineering research. An interim report was published in Fall 2014 identifying key issues and catalyzing input from the community. The final report, which was issued in late April, considered contributions from multiple stakeholders, including more than 60 submitted comments from individuals, research groups, and organizations. The recommendations within the report aim to: (1) position the United States for continued leadership in science and engineering; (2) ensure that computing resources meet community needs; (3) aid the scientific community in keeping up with the revolution in computing, and (4) sustain the infrastructure for advanced computing. We are enthusiastic about the study’s helpful observations and recommendations. The timing of the report is excellent, syncing with planning for NSF’s future research cyberinfrastructure (CI) investments. It also nicely complements the National Strategic Computing Initiative (NSCI)<https://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2015/07/29/executive-order-crea…> that was announced last summer and some of our internal planning with respect to data infrastructure as the NSF-wide Cyberinfrastructure for 21st-Century Science, Engineering, and Education (CIF21) effort transitions. Immersive Analytics aims to bring together researchers in Information Visualization, Visual Analytics, Virtual and Augmented Reality and Natural User Interfaces. Due to the recent advances in immersive technologies (VR, AR, large displays, tangible surfaces, etc.), we see new opportunities to using these technologies to analyze and explore data. Visual analytics is concerned with analytical reasoning facilitated by interactive visual interfaces. This definition is agnostic of the actual interface devices employed by visual analysis systems. Nevertheless, the affordances of the display and input devices used for analyzing data strongly affect the experience of the users of such systems, and so, their degree of engagement and productivity. However, a systematic approach to developing visual analytic tools that move beyond the desktop is yet lacking. >> What? In this call, we are looking for innovative research, design, and view-points, mature or work-in-progress, that fall into or are related to the following topics: * Real-world VA/AR, * Collaboration, * Hybrid 2D/3D, * Affordances for Immersion, * Changing Technologies, * Application Areas, * Platforms and Toolkits. A two-year position as postdoctoral research fellow is available at University of Copenhagen in the Human-Computer Interaction Group at Department of Computer Science (http://www.diku.dk) The candidate will join the BIOPRO team to design and evaluate novel interactive visualizations that help domain experts develop and combine mathematical models and statistical models with online sensor-data with the ultimate goal of optimizing bio-based production processes. We work with domain experts from leading bio-based manufacturing companies in Denmark and with leading university researchers in chemical engineering, chemometrics, and applied statistics. Applicants are welcome to develop their own directions of research within the above context, and will have the opportunity to design both for workstations and high-resolution wall displays. Applicants must have a PhD in computer science and must have research experience in the fields of Human-Computer Interaction or Information Visualization. CFP: Workshop on Visualization for the Digital Humanities

We invite contributions for the 2016 Workshop on Visualization for the Digital Humanities: http://www.vis4dh.com This will be a one day workshop taking place as part of IEEE VIS 2016 in Baltimore, MD. http://ieeevis.org/ The purpose of this workshop is to propose new research directions in visualization for the digital humanities, to familiarize the visualization research community with the problems faced by digital humanities researchers, and to foster future collaboration between visualization and digital humanities research. Despite the growing popularity of digital methods for research in the humanities, digital humanists are underserved by academics in visualization, and under-represented in visualization conferences. This is due to a number of factors: 1. The differences in rhetorics of proof and discovery (and so differences in data culture and use) in the humanities as opposed to other, typically scientific or analytic fields where visualization research is commonly focused. 2. The difficulty of performing task analysis and evaluation for many humanities questions, that may have no ground truth. 3. In text visualization specifically, the difference between the needs of digital humanists (who perform close readings and critical engagements with texts) as opposed to more standard text visualization scenarios (e.g. text analytics on datasets for intelligence or social media analysis). Addressing these difficulties requires exposure of these data issues, interdisciplinary collaboration, and steering of future research directions. Submission This workshop is seeking work from scholars in both visualization and the humanities who use visualization as part of the process of analyzing and interrogating human culture. Submissions will present original research ideas or results as they relate to visualization for the digital humanities. Each submission should clearly state its specific contribution to this growing field of research. Submissions will take the form of short (2-4 page) papers, falling into one of three submission types: - Extended Abstracts: These submissions are meant to highlight emerging visualization research in the digital humanities. The intention of these shorter submissions is to provide a platform for feedback for work that is still in progress, rather than present completed projects. - Short Papers: These submissions are meant to summarize more mature work in visualization for the digital humanities, including case studies, system descriptions, and empirical results. Of special consideration are works that highlight the difficulties (and propose solutions) of designing visualizations for the digital humanities. Applied work from the digital humanities that is highly visual in nature would also be considered for acceptance. - Position Papers: These submissions are meant to present viewpoints and opinions on the interplay between visualization and the digital humanities. These positions should be informed by deep involvement and experience in one (or ideally, both) fields. Position papers should be thought-provoking but also well-supported. Authors of accepted short and position papers will be invited for a 9-minute research presentation (including 2 minutes for audience questions). Additionally, they will participate in a moderated panel discussion. Authors of accepted extended abstracts will give 5 minute "fast-forward" presentations. ***************************************************** 2016 Workshop on Visualization in Practice Call for Abstracts http://visinpractice.org/ ****************************************************** The 2016 Workshop on Visualization in Practice is an opportunity for visualization practitioners and researchers to meet and share experiences, insights, and ideas in applying the latest visualization and visual analytics research to real world problems. The focus of this year's workshop will be the design, development, distribution, and application of open source visualization and visual analytics software. The workshop will include an invited keynote, a session of talks, and a poster session in which live demonstrations of open source tools will be given. All accepted submissions will be given the opportunity to present in the poster/demonstration session. At the discretion of the conference organizers, approximately 12 submissions will also be selected to give an oral presentation during the talk session. The 2016 VIP workshop will be held in conjunction with IEEE VIS in Baltimore, Maryland during the week of October 23-28. Topics --------- Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: - Design of open source visualization or visual analytic systems and libraries - Demonstrations of new open source tools that address practical visualization problems - Critiques of existing open source visualization systems, informed by real-world usage, with suggestions for improvement - Retrospectives on the process of turning research prototypes into robust, open source software - Discussions of the state of the open source visualization ecosystem---how well do existing tools interoperate? where are there substantial gaps? - Best practices for using open source visualization tools and adopting them within organizations - Proposals for researcher-practitioner collaborations to address real-world visualization challenges We especially encourage submissions from practitioners who apply visualization and visual analytics to real-world problems in journalism, industry, national laboratories, government, non-profits, etc. Submission ---------------- We solicit submissions of extended abstracts of up to 2 pages, IEEE paper format guidelines (http://junctionpublishing.org/vgtc/Tasks/camera.html) plus up to 12 additional figures (beyond those in the abstract) which cover the visual content you would include in your final poster or in a talk, if invited to give one. The images should be appended to the 2-page document (thus, your whole document may have more than 2 pages). You are invited to use captions in order to explain your images. To clarify, we count a Latex figure as one item regardless of how many sub-images it contains. Optionally, you may submit a video (MPEG, AVI, or Quicktime format, duration at most 5 minutes) showing your methods or processes in action. This will be most helpful for demonstrating the effectiveness of your approach. If you would like to have your video included in the conference USB stick, it should not exceed 100MB. Abstracts will be reviewed for their potential applicability to the VIP workshop audience and their potential positive impact on the broader open source visualization community. Additionally, they will be reviewed for timeliness, clarity, and overall quality of writing. Where applicable, the described open source software will also be reviewed for robustness, applicability, ease of access (e.g. github repository), licensing, documentation, and ease of running an initial demonstration. You are invited to submit a 2-page ACM double-column format for poster presentation at VINCI '16. Detailed information on the electronic submission can be found on the conference web page. All accepted posters abstracts will be published by ACM Press in the VINCI '16 Proceedings (EI-indexed). The best poster presentation will be selected and awarded at the conference.
