3rd Biennial Two-Day Broadening Participation in Visualization Workshop (BPViz'18) Purdue University and University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign June 13 - 14, 2018 ****** Accepting Applications ****** Visualization plays a significant role in the exploration and understanding of data across all disciplines with a universal goal: gaining insight into the complex relationships that exist within the data. The need to diversify a field with such far reaching influences is imperative. The purpose of the workshop is to provide hands-on experience visualizing data, and foster opportunities for networking and mentoring between underrepresented groups and experts in the field of visualization. The 2018 CRA-W/CDC CADENS two-day Discipline Specific Workshop aims to broaden participation of women and members of underrepresented groups in the field of data visualization. The two-day workshop will include demos, a poster presentation by participants, panel presentation by visualization professionals, keynote speakers, networking, mentoring activities and scholarly exchange of ideas. The workshop, co-located at Purdue University and University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign and scheduled for June 13-14, 2018, will include a trip to the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA). Limited travel awards are available. For full consideration for travel awards, applications must be received by 11:59 PM (EST), Friday, January 19, 2018. We are regrettably restricted to reimbursing/providing travel support to only U.S. Citizens. We recognize this is a serious constraint, but it is a federal regulation on the funding. To address interest from a larger community to participate, BPViz'18 Organizers are seeking external sponsorship for potential workshop participants who are not eligible for funding described above. Dear Colleagues, We are soliciting assistance with a research study on information visualization education. Details of the study are provided below. Thank you for your time and consideration, Paul Parsons, Vetria Byrd, and Camilo Vieira Purdue University Interest in information visualization (InfoVis) has been growing in recent years, leading to growth in InfoVis training in both academic and non-academic contexts. As a result, InfoVis pedagogy has become an important topic for research and discussion. Little scholarship has focused directly on InfoVis education, however, and research informing curriculum design is underdeveloped. This research study aims to identify InfoVis concepts that are both important and difficult to learn. The results from this study can be used to support the curriculum development process for InfoVis programs, and to inform educational research and pedagogical practices. We are inviting you to participate in this research because you are part of a community of InfoVis educators, researchers, and practitioners. We are specifically interested in your input based on your experience teaching, learning, and/or practicing InfoVis. Your participation in this study consists of three rounds of data collection that are explained below. Throughout the three rounds your identity will be kept anonymous to other respondents (though not to the researchers). That is, you will not directly interact with other respondents and you will not know who they are, nor they will be able to identify you. Only the researchers will be able to connect your identity with your responses. Please note that all data (with and without identifiers) will be kept permanently and will be stored in a hard drive by Dr. Vieira in a locked cabinet within his office at Purdue University. Each round is expected to take approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Further, it is anticipated that there will be several weeks between each round to collate all responses, revise the instrument for the next iteration, and provide feedback to you. At the close of the third round, you will be offered the choice to receive a copy of the final report. The Delphi process provides an interactive communication structure between researchers and subject matter experts (SMEs) to develop themes, needs, and directions about a topic. This Delphi process will consist of three anonymous, iterative rounds as follows: Goal Round 1: To identify important and difficult concepts to learn in InfoVis education. Goal Round 2: To rank different levels of relevance and difficulty for each of the InfoVis concepts provided on a consolidated list. Goal Round 3: To revise the collective responses and gain consensus among the respondents. There are no foreseeable risks associated with this project, nor are there any direct benefits to participants. This project has been reviewed by the Purdue University IRB office and approved as IRB #1704019129. *AT&T Labs Graduate Student Symposium* Big Data Research at AT&T Labs invites outstanding graduate students to apply to a one-day Graduate Student Symposium December 1st, 2017 33 Thomas St., New York City The symposium provides an opportunity for selected graduate students to present their research to AT&T Labs. In addition, AT&T researchers will discuss opportunities for collaboration, offer career advice about working in an industry lab, and describe projects in these areas of active research: Visualization Research Video and Multimedia Analytics Machine Learning Statistical Computing Statistics and Data Science Databases and Data Management *Application Process:* Approximately 10 students will be invited to attend the symposium. ** CFP: Special Issue on Genetic Programming, Evolutionary Computation and Visualization ** Recent advances in Genetic Programming / Evolutionary Computation (GP/EC) and visualization have shown a growing synergy between these fields. On the one hand, visualization can make GP/EC algorithms more transparent, through interactive parameter tuning and the graphical representation of experimental analyses [3,5]. On the other hand, GP/EC techniques can be deployed to efficiently guide user search in exploratory visualization systems [1,2,4]. This special issue aims to bring together latest work and new advances in Genetic Programming / Evolutionary Computation (GP/EC) and Visualization (including its three subfields: information visualization, scientific visualization, and visual analytics), to produce new insights on: - how to develop better visualization tools to support GP/EC, and - how to develop robust GP/EC algorithms to support visualization applications. This approach works well with sufficient high-quality meta-data or tagging. However, with the explosive growth of big data collections, it has become apparent that tagging new data quickly and efficiently is not always possible. Secondly, even if instantaneous high-quality data tagging were possible, there would still be many instances, where search by keyword query is problematic. For example, in the case of image retrieval it might be easier for a user to define their query if they are looking for an image of a cat, but how would they specify that the cat should be of a particular shade of ginger with sad looking eyes? A solution to these problems is active engagement of the user in the information retrieval loop, thus enabling the user to not only explore a given dataset more easily but also gradually direct their search to a more specific area of the search space. The aim of this workshop is to explore new methods and interface/system design for interactive data analytics and management in various domains, including specialised text collections (e.g. legal, medical, scientific), multimedia, and bioinformatics, as well as for various tasks, such as semantic information retrieval, conceptual organization and clustering of data collections for sense-making, semantic expert profiling, and document/multimedia recommender systems. The primary audience of the workshop is researchers and practitioners in the area of interactive and personalized system design as well as interactive machine learning both from academia and industry. IUI, with its focus on the intersection of HCI and AI, is a perfect venue where researchers from system/interface design community and the machine learning community can meet. Workshop Target Areas The workshop aims to solicit submissions in all areas of interactive data analytics and exploratory search including: - design, testing and assessment of interactive systems for data analytics - interactive data visualization for exploratory and investigative analysis - interactive classification and clustering of data - user-assisted curation and validation of the analysis process, and generation of data visualizations - user engagement in the semantic analysis process via suitable annotation and correction tools - study of the trade-off between accuracy of the results and user effort - personalization and user modeling related to interactive system design Submissions aimed at solving practical problems in specific application domains are especially welcome, including: - digital libraries - legal document management - personalized online learning systems - news media - biomedical data - multimedia collections - specialized image and video collections, e.g. medical images. The goal of the Diagrams 2018 Graduate Symposium is twofold. Firstly, the Symposium will provide senior graduate students and recent Masters and Doctoral graduates with the opportunity to present their research. Secondly, the Symposium will provide students with an opportunity to network with each other as future colleagues. Students who are presenting a poster at the main conference, including either of the special tracks, will be expected to give a presentation at the Symposium. They do not need to prepare an additional poster for the main conference. All students who receive student funding from Diagrams 2018 will be required to attend the Graduate Symposium. **************************************************************************** Supervisor Support Students who submit to the graduate symposium must ask their main or lead supervisor to submit a short supporting statement, by email to Andrew Blake, a.l.blake(a)brighton.ac.uk. Dear Colleagues, For the first time the TransImage conference (https://transimage2018.net <https://transimage2018.net/>) is featuring a special track on data visualization. TransImage aims in bringing together artists, theorists, scholars, scientists, historians and curators. Papers are invited from areas related to: Media Arts, Painting, Drawing, Curating, Installation, Film, Video, Photography, Data Visualization, Real-time Imaging, Design, Intelligent Systems and Image Science. The Data Visualization track focuses on questions such as: Where are the new frontiers for visualization? How can visualization become a cultural artifact and general skill? How to support people creating, accessing, learning, and understanding visualizations? How do data visualizations become interface to the data? The work must be original and not published elsewhere before. Accepted papers will be put online and get a DOI. High-rated submissions will get an invitation for an extended journal version. Send us your most creative and provocative research.
