This study was commissioned by CISE’s Division of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure (ACI) in 2013 to examine priorities and trade-offs for advanced computing in support of NSF-supported science and engineering research. An interim report was published in Fall 2014 identifying key issues and catalyzing input from the community. The final report, which was issued in late April, considered contributions from multiple stakeholders, including more than 60 submitted comments from individuals, research groups, and organizations. The recommendations within the report aim to: (1) position the United States for continued leadership in science and engineering; (2) ensure that computing resources meet community needs; (3) aid the scientific community in keeping up with the revolution in computing, and (4) sustain the infrastructure for advanced computing. We are enthusiastic about the study’s helpful observations and recommendations. The timing of the report is excellent, syncing with planning for NSF’s future research cyberinfrastructure (CI) investments. It also nicely complements the National Strategic Computing Initiative (NSCI)<https://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2015/07/29/executive-order-crea…> that was announced last summer and some of our internal planning with respect to data infrastructure as the NSF-wide Cyberinfrastructure for 21st-Century Science, Engineering, and Education (CIF21) effort transitions. CFP: VADL: 2017 IEEE VIS Workshop on Visual Analytics for Deep Learning Arizona, Phoenix, 1 or 2 October 2017 https://vadl2017.github.io/ Recently, deep neural networks have been achieving breakthroughs in various major artificial intelligence tasks such as machine translation, image understanding, speech recognition, and so on. In these tasks, deep neural networks reached the level of an accuracy comparable to or even better than humans’ performance. However, understanding the deep neural networks is challenging due to their complicated inner workings. VADL, the workshop on visual analytics for deep learning, is a half-day workshop held in conjunction with IEEE VIS 2017 in Phoenix, AZ. The primary goal of the workshop is to bridge the gap by bringing together researchers from both machine learning and visual analytics fields, which allows us to push the boundary of deep learning. The workshop should provide an opportunity to discuss and explore ways to harmonize the power of automated techniques and exploratory nature of interactive visualization. Topics of Interest: In this call, we look for papers related to visual analytics for deep learning. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - User-adaptive approaches to deep neural networks - Coupling of deep learning-based systems with interactive visualization - Visualization to improve deep learning algorithms and models - Coordinated visualizations for deep learning - Systems, languages, and architectures for interactive deep learning - Collaborative analysis of deep network networks - Real-time visualization of streaming data handling in deep learning - Visualization of uncertainty in deep neural networks - Domain-specific applications of visual analysis of deep neural networks (e.g. retail, healthcare, government, etc.) - Studies and evaluation of deep learning visualization techniques, systems, metrics, and benchmarks Submission Information: All papers will be peer reviewed, single-blinded. Future Science Platforms (FSPs) are a major new CSIRO initiative. FSPs are multi-year investments in frontier science that will reinvent and create new industries for Australia. Digiscape is the FSP that is creating next-generation decision tools to transform the agriculture and land management sector. To achieve this aim, Digiscape is bringing to bear cutting edge climate science; new sources of locally and remotely sensed data; informatics for agro-ecosystems; rigorous analysis of uncertainties; and innovation in both the ICT and social dimensions of systems integration. The successful candidate will join a cohort of early-career researchers and engineers who will combine their individual disciplinary contributions into mission-focussed R&D. Part of the Digiscape vision is that Augmented Reality technologies (such as Microsoft HoloLens) will play a key role in supporting individual and team decision making, both in the field and in the office. In the aquaculture domain these tools will assist operators on the ground and/or in the office to visualise pond conditions and access short-term pond predictions across multiple ponds. They will be a primary method for accessing the data management and modelling frameworks developed in related projects. Your success in this role will be underpinned by your record of science innovation and creativity, plus your ability and willingness to incorporate novel ideas and approaches into scientific investigations. Job Description: The Innovations in Visualization (led by Sheelagh Carpendale) and the Data Experience (led by Wesley Willett) labs are looking for a Post Doctoral Fellow in Information Visualization, Design, and/or Interaction Design. The project is an open data initiative that is focused on developing advanced, interactive data visualizations that will help make Canada's energy data publically accessible, transparent and understandable. The successful candidate will be deeply involved in the research in the lab, working closely with domain experts and stakeholders, creating new design ideas, developing new visual representations, fine tuning designs, and creating prototypes and communicating these designs to relevant team members. They will also be involved in mentoring students who are working on the project. The successful candidate's work will include participating in various outreach activities - including designing and running workshops and providing formal and informal demonstrations to appropriate stakeholders. The successful candidate's work will focus explicitly on designing novel interactive visualizations and interaction techniques and will include opportunities to publish that work at visualization venues. Qualifications: PhD or equivalent degree in Computer Science, Informatics, Design, or a related field. A background in information visualization and with extensive experience designing and developing interactive visualizations is important. Expressions of interest are invited for a postdoc position in graph drawing and related areas at the graph drawing research group led by Prof. Giuseppe Di Battista at the Department of Engineering at Roma Tre University. The research group includes Fabrizio Frati, Maurizio Patrignani, and Maurizio Pizzonia as permanent members, together with several postdocs and PhD students. The postdoc position is funded by the PRIN (Research Projects of National Interest) Project "MODE" - Morphing graph drawings efficiently. The ideal candidate for the position should have a PhD in Mathematics or Computer Science and should have a background in algorithms, theoretical computer science and/or discrete mathematics, preferably with an interest in graph drawing, graph theory, and/or combinatorial geometry. Should any candidate be considered fit for the postdoc position, a call for applications will be opened. The postdoc appointment is to begin at any time during 2017 (or early 2018), the sooner the better. The position is for one year, renewable for a second year. The position is full-time and research-only. The position is open to candidates of any nationality; in particular, no knowledge of Italian is required. VizSec provides an excellent venue for fostering greater exchange and new collaborations on a broad range of security- and privacy-related topics. VizSec will be held in Phoenix, AZ, USA in conjunction with IEEE VIS, on Monday, October 2nd 2017. ** NIER and Tool track deadline is June 23, 2017 ** VISSOFT 2017: 5th IEEE Working Conference on Software Visualization -== Call for Papers ==- Software visualization is a broad research area whose general goal is to enhance and promote the theory, realization, and evaluation of approaches to visually encode and analyze software systems, including software development practices, evolution, structure, and software runtime behavior. Software visualization is inherently interdisciplinary, drawing on theories and techniques from information visualization and computer graphics and applying these in the software engineering domain. The VISSOFT conference is principally a venue for publishing and discussing research related to software visualization. VISSOFT brings together a community of researchers from software engineering, information visualization, computer graphics, and human-computer interaction to discuss theoretical foundations, algorithms, techniques, tools, and applications related to software visualization. This year’s VISSOFT, co-held with ICSME, encourages a variety of submissions that address outstanding challenges in software systems using visualization. This includes technical papers, empirical studies, applications, case studies, and papers that present novel ideas and tools. VISSOFT topics of interest include: * Innovative visualization and visual analytics techniques for analysis of software engineering data. This includes source code, dependencies, repositories, developer social networks like StackOverflow and GitHub, mobile app reviews, documentation, runtime logs, and DevOps data. * Visualization to support software development activities, including design, requirements engineering, program comprehension, software testing, and debugging. * Interaction techniques and algorithms for software visualization * Visualization-based techniques in software engineering education * Integration of software visualization tools with development environments * Empirical evaluation of software visualizations * Industrial experience with using software visualization * Applications of new technologies to enhance software visualization, including virtual reality, augmented reality, gamification, and machine learning. We solicit papers that present original, unpublished research results. Papers will be rigorously reviewed by an international program committee. Application deadline is very soon: JUNE 1, 2017! ==== PHD STUDENT IN COMPUTER SCIENCE WITH SPECIALIZATION IN VISUAL ANALYTICS ==== placed at Linnaeus University, Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Technology – Växjö Campus, Sweden Application deadline: June 1, 2017 ****Description**** The focus of this advertised PhD position and the corresponding research project is on visual analytics for engineering smarter system. The research will be performed within the Linnaeus University Center on Data Intensive Sciences and Applications, DISA, funded by Linnaeus University for five years. Overall aim of this DISA subproject is to better understand and engineer complex cyber-physical systems. We will develop foundational visual analytics principles, techniques and tools for analyzing data and models in those systems. Thus, trust into the analysis results will be finally increased by making the analysis methods and resulting empirical models transparent for end users. In consequence, our users will be enabled to better predict the behavior of cyber-physical systems and to reconstruct the underlying models more efficiently when needed. Duties consist mainly of the following: • Graduate studies in the field of Visual Analytics, with a doctoral degree as the goal. The PhD thesis should be completed and defended within the official appointment duration of five years (4 years graduate studies, 1 year departmental tasks). • Research in the field Visual Analytics. The position is part of DISA and its subproject Visual Analytics for Engineering Smarter Systems. • Regularly present intermediate research results at international conferences and workshops, and publish them in conference proceedings and journals. • Close collaboration with the other project members in an interdisciplinary research environment as well as with domain experts. • At most 20% of the working time will be dedicated to teaching and other departmental tasks. Note that a PhD position in Sweden is a salaried employment with the right to social benefits and paid vacations. ****Qualifications**** Qualification requirements A person fulfils the general entry requirements. if he/she has comprised a completed undergraduate program of at least 240 credits, including 60 credits at advanced level, or the equivalent knowledge in Sweden or abroad. Specific requirements are • approved courses of a minimum of 90 credits in the subject Computer and Information Science or the equivalent, and • an individual study project of a minimum of 15 credits in the subject Computer and Information Science, or the equivalent. Others The specific prerequisites for admission to PhD studies within the above-mentioned specialization are • a successfully finished Master’s thesis in a field related to Information Visualization, Visual Analytics, Human-Computer Interaction, or Data Sciences; and • high proficiency in written and spoken English. ****Assessment criteria**** Excellent knowledge in the focused research areas of information visualization and visual analytics is a strong advantage. Good programming skills (Java, JavaScript / HTML5, WebGL/OpenGL) and a solid training in mathematics, data mining, or machine learning are highly preferred. Documented expertise and working experience within at least one of the following research and educational areas is a great advantage: • Visual analytics of Big Data • Visual analytics of streaming data • Multidimensional visualization techniques in combination with machine learning and/or data mining techniques (such as dimensionality reduction) • Evaluation of visualizations • Experiences in specific application domains and their visualization needs related to the DISA subproject, such as in systems engineering Because of the interdisciplinary character of the project and DISA, the candidate should be an enthusiastic person who is interested in making sense of large and complex data sets of various types as well as capable of working both independently and within a group. Teamwork experiences should be documented in the application.
