ABOUT THE PROJECT Molecular dynamics simulations (MDS) are important to understand biomolecular systems and materials. MDS produce large amounts of complex data representing spatial and/or temporal changes. The aim of this project is therefore to apply and further develop suitable immersive analytics methodology and to create an integrated tool that allows to perform the analytics workflow interactively in the same environment, e.g. using augmented reality devices. For this interdisciplinary project, we are looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate with a strong computer science background in order to carry out research at the intersection of chemistry, biology, and computer science. VAST Challenge 2017: Last Call for Participation Submission deadline is July 16, 2017 at 11:59 pm Pacific Daylight Time (UTC/GMT -9 hours). http://vacommunity.org/VAST+Challenge+2017 There is still time to submit to the Visual Analytics Science and Technology (VAST) Challenge--an annual contest with the goal of advancing the field of visual analytics through competition. The VAST Challenge is designed to help researchers understand how their software would be used in a novel analytic task and determine if their data transformations, visualizations, and interactions would be beneficial for particular analytic tasks. VAST Challenge problems provide researchers with realistic data sets and questions for evaluating their software, as well as an opportunity to advance the field by solving complex problems. This year's Challenge offers three diverse mini-challenges and a grand challenge that concern a sad state of affairs in a nature preserve, threats to flora and fauna, and the quest of a local graduate student to find the explanations. We welcome visualization innovations that address key issues in the problems presented; even if a mini-challenge is not completely solved. Postdoctoral Fellow - Augmented Reality for Decision Support * Are you a highly motivated PhD graduate? * Do you have a passion for developing novel interactive Augmented Reality (AR) applications? * A great opportunity to collaborate across disciplines and create productivity tools that have substantial industrial impacts! Future Science Platforms (FSPs) are a major new CSIRO initiative. FSPs are multi-year investments in frontier science that will reinvent and create new industries for Australia. Digiscape is the FSP that is creating next-generation decision tools to transform the agriculture and land management sector. To achieve this aim, Digiscape is bringing to bear cutting edge climate science; new sources of locally and remotely sensed data; informatics for agro-ecosystems; rigorous analysis of uncertainties; and innovation in both the ICT and social dimensions of systems integration. The successful candidate will join a cohort of early-career researchers and engineers who will combine their individual disciplinary contributions into mission-focussed R&D. Part of the Digiscape vision is that Augmented Reality technologies (such as Microsoft HoloLens) will play a key role in supporting individual and team decision making, both in the field and in the office. In the aquaculture domain these tools will assist operators on the ground and/or in the office to visualise pond conditions and access short-term pond predictions across multiple ponds. They will be a primary method for accessing the data management and modelling frameworks developed in related projects. Your success in this role will be underpinned by your record of science innovation and creativity, plus your ability and willingness to incorporate novel ideas and approaches into scientific investigations. The successful applicant will implement and evaluate prototype systems, while making use of the Advanced Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality (VR) facilities in the Data61 Immersive Environments Lab in Canberra. To be considered you will have (or expect to imminently complete) a PhD in Computer Science, Engineering or a directly related field. You will have experience conducting research in interactive 3D graphics and/or computer vision in Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and/or Web3D.
