Job Description: The Faculty of Science at the University of Manitoba (UM) has *one* open post-doctoral fellow position in the visualization of astrophysical data products with emphasis on scientific visualization, including the use of interactive 3D Virtual Reality systems. The successful applicant will be part of a multidisciplinary UM team of researchers covering the domains of astrophysics, data science and visualization.S/he will have responsibilities that include the development of code for visualization. The UM researchers focus on analyzing the radio continuum data from the Very Large Array Sky Survey (VLASS), which is a Square Kilometre Array (SKA) pathfinder project. As such the team collaborates with experts at the Universities of Toronto and Alberta and contributes to a pilot Canadian SKA Regional Centre, which is supported by a Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) grant.This centre will archive the catalogue and enhanced scientific data products from VLASS observations developed by the UM team using aspects of machine learning, data mining, etc. Responsibilities: The successful candidate will develop, maintain and document visualization software for a joint project between research groups in UM’s Computer Science and Physics & Astronomy departments. Their focus will be on effective, perception-based visualization of the VLASS catalogues and data products for 2D desktop displays, which access the regional centre’s web archive, and 3D immersive VR headsets. The goal is to facilitate exploration of big data by /human-computer interaction/ to enable discovery science associated with radio transient phenomena, active galactic nuclei, jets, supernova remnants, etc. This position will include some time for independent VLASS-related research in either astrophysics or visualization. The successful candidate will be expected to publish research results in the refereed journal literature. Qualifications: Candidates must have a PhD degree in astrophysics, physics, or computer science with a focus on computational science and/or visualization, or demonstrate the ability to acquire skills in these areas. Familiarity with Linux and programming skills in C++, Python, and fluency in written and spoken English are required. Competence in gaming engines (such as Unity) are a preferred asset, as is the ability to work across disciplines and towork well as a team member and independently. The reasons why stories have been told are manifold: to entertain, to transfer knowledge between generations, to keep cultural heritage, or to warn others of dangers. With the emergence of the digitalization of media many new possibilities to tell stories emerged in serious and non-entertainment contexts. A very simple example is the idea of serious gaming - thus digital games without primarily an entertainment purpose. Within this handbook, we generalize the approach of serious games, on other genres of digital storytelling, and call for handbook typical contributions which introduce „serious storytelling: storytelling with a purpose beyond entertainment“ as new approach. IEEE VIS 2018 Workshop: Toward a Design Language for Data Physicalization CALL FOR PAPERS Date and Location: October 21 or 22, 2018 in Berlin, Germany Website: http://dataphys.org/workshops/vis18/ Data physicalization is the practice of designing physical artifacts “whose geometry or material properties encode data”. It has a wide range of application areas including, design, architecture, education, and personal analytics (see www.dataphys.org<http://www.dataphys.org>/ for a comprehensive list). However, despite of the large variety of case studies in this area, a principled way of encoding data into physical artifacts has yet to be established. The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers from different research communities (in particular visualization, HCI, and design) to discuss approaches toward a unified design language for data physicalization. Through a series of invited talks, alternating with small-group activity-based discussions, the workshop will start to consolidate different efforts of characterizing and evaluating the core properties or “variables” that drive data physicalization, and to define a research agenda in this area. We aim for this workshop to invite a diverse audience from all fields of professional practice, research, and education from the fields of information design, visualization, and human data interaction. WORKSHOP TOPICS Workshop submissions may approach the topic of physicalization design practices from a theoretical, practical, and/or empirical perspective. Topics include but are not limited to: * Design space of data physicalization * Data physicalization as a design practice * Design patterns of data physicalization * Systematic approaches to translating visual variables into physical data encodings * Studies of physical properties from a perceptual perspective * Teaching data mappings through physicalization in a systematic way * Considering material choices * Fabrication for physicalization (digital, manual, mixed) * The influence of physical environment, usage scenarios, and interaction models on physicalization design and physical encodings * Physical encodings in the context of data / visualization literacy In general, we very much welcome provocative works on the topic as well as works in progress. Works may build on previously published work, but should contribute a new perspective on the topic. All papers will be peer-reviewed by at least two researchers in the area. Accepted works will be made available on the workshop website and included on the IEEE VIS USB key. Accepted papers will be given an oral presentation slot at the workshop. At least one author of each accepted paper needs to register for the conference (even if only for the workshop). The ever-increasing global awareness, practise, and teaching of information and data visualization includes a growing audience of consumers and creators. We, as a scientific community must put careful emphasis on the collection and curation of knowledge in the area. The goal of this workshop is to discuss and consolidate guidelines, best practices, controversies, and success stories in the field of information visualization. [Apologies for multiple copies] Special issue on human centric visual analytics: Journal of Behaviour & Information Technology (2016 Impact Factor: 1.388) Currently, many visual analytics products and tools have been developed. However, in developing those tools and products, much attention has been paid on mining data patterns and making the hidden information visible to users. Relatively less attention has been paid on how this information should be presented for sense making decision making. This imbalance between human and computer has resulted in the lack of theories and guidelines for system design and evaluation and prevented systems and tools from being more useful in practice. To foster an incentive to address the issue and improve the situation, this specie issue targets on new visualization theories, novel design principles, analytics techniques and evaluation methodologies that are to address issues surrounding human-centric visual analytics. The primary objective is to foster focused attention in this emerging area and to serve as forum for researchers and professionals all over the world to exchange and discuss the latest advances. To be precise, the aim of this special issue is to present a collection of high-quality research papers on the state-of-the-art in the emerging area of human-centric visual analytics. We are soliciting original contributions that have not been published and are not currently under review by any other journals or conferences. Papers to be submitted to this special issue must focus on the human side of visual analytics. Here immersion is regarded as an objective measure of the quality of the system’s technology, a measure of the extent to which the system presents a vivid environment, be it high-fidelity rendering or not, tracked or not, and stereoscopic or not. As a result, large high-resolution displays and the entire spectrum of mixed reality (MR) and ubiquitous computing all introduce opportunities to facilitate analytical reasoning and thus fall into the immersive analytics paradigm. This Research Topic is dedicated to "use-inspired basic research in immersive analytics" where a real-world problem shapes the design and studies. We encourage the discussions on intriguing issues of persuasive power of communications utilizing immersive display technologies, understanding the multifarious symbiosis relationships between humans and computing, and how best display and interaction can be used not only as a mechanism to conceive and communicate reality or how a set of visual variables can be encoded, but a means for influence, a way to persuade viewers to share that reality or at least to act in accordance with it. The consequences for design will be more powerful if immersiveanalytics can alter human assessments of and actions on their data. In today's digital world, visual information is typically encoded with various metaphors commonly used in daily life to facilitate rapid comprehension and easy analysis during the communication process. Visual information communication generally encompasses information visualization, graphical user-interfaces, visual analytics, and visual languages. Visual information is increasingly being used to facilitate human-human communication through the Internet and mobile devices. The Symposium on Visual Information Communication and Interaction (VINCI) (vinci-conf.org) is the premier international forum for researchers and industrial practitioners to discuss the state-of-the-art in visual communication theories, designs, and applications. The 11th International Symposium on Visual Information Communication and Interaction (VINCI '18) will be held on 13-15 August 2018, in Växjö, Sweden. Papers can be submitted as full papers, short papers or posters. All accepted papers will be published by ACM Press and made available in the ACM Digital Library (EI indexed). Authors of selected full papers of high quality will be invited to submit revised versions of their works to a special issue of the Journal of Visual Languages and Computing (SCI-indexed). In addition, revised versions of selected best papers in art and design will be invited for subsequent publication in a special issue of Leonardo (MIT Press, AHCI indexed). 1. SCOPES AND TOPICS ==================== We solicit original, unpublished research papers that focus on all aspects of visual information communication and interaction, either via images, computer graphics, animations, virtual reality, web, or other media. Research papers may address cognitive and design aspects, underlying theories, taxonomies, implementation work, tool support, and case studies. PAPER SUBMISSION =================== Submissions that address research and development, as well as experience reports and tool demonstrations on the above and other related topics are strongly encouraged. Papers can be submitted as full papers, short papers or posters. Each submitted symposium paper will be peer-reviewed by at least three International Program Committee members. All accepted papers and posters will appear in the proceedings of VINCI2018 published by ACM Press and made available in the ACM Digital Library (EI indexed). Moreover, authors of a number of selected full papers of high quality will be invited to prepare revised versions of their work for submission to a special issue of JVLC (SCI-indexed). Sorry if you have received multiple copies of this email ======================================================================= Call for Papers VISSOFT 2018 6th IEEE Working Conference on Software Visualization September 24-25, 2018 - Madrid, Spain http://vissoft18.etsii.urjc.es ======================================================================= Software visualization is a broad research area whose general goal is to enhance and promote the theory, realization, and evaluation of approaches to visually encode and analyze software systems, including software development practices, evolution, structure, and software runtime behavior. Software visualization is inherently interdisciplinary, drawing on theories and techniques from information visualization and computer graphics and applying these in the software engineering domain. The VISSOFT conference is principally a venue for publishing and discussing research related to software visualization. VISSOFT brings together a community of researchers from software engineering, information visualization, computer graphics, and human-computer interaction to discuss theoretical foundations, algorithms, techniques, tools, and applications related to software visualization. This year’s VISSOFT, co-held with ICSME, encourages a variety of submissions that address outstanding challenges in software systems using visualization. This includes technical papers, empirical studies, applications, case studies, and papers that present novel ideas and tools. VISSOFT topics of interest include: * Innovative visualization and visual analytics techniques for analysis of software engineering data. This includes source code, dependencies, repositories, developer social networks like StackOverflow and GitHub, mobile app reviews, documentation, runtime logs, and DevOps data. * Visualization to support software development activities, including design, requirements engineering, program comprehension, software testing, and debugging. * Interaction techniques and algorithms for software visualization * Visualization-based techniques in software engineering education * Integration of software visualization tools with development environments * Empirical evaluation of software visualizations * Industrial experience with using software visualization * Applications of new technologies to enhance software visualization, including virtual reality, augmented reality, gamification, and machine learning. We solicit papers that present original, unpublished research results. Papers will be rigorously reviewed by an international program committee. In addition to technical papers, VISSOFT features a New Ideas or Emerging Results (NIER) track and a Tools track. All accepted submissions will appear in the conference proceedings and the IEEE Digital Library. == Technical papers == A technical paper contribution must describe an in-depth and mature research result relevant to software visualization. The content of a technical paper can be at a maximum 10 pages long (including all figures, tables, and appendices). However, the 10 page limit does not include the bibliography, which is not limited in length. The submission of a video (up to 5 minutes in length) to accompany the paper is highly encouraged to show interaction possibilities. Authors who wish to submit a video can submit the video together with their paper if the size of the video is smaller than 50 MB, otherwise a URL to the video should be provided. Authors will be given the opportunity to provide a response to reviewer requests for clarifications before a final decision is made. Following the effort initiated at ESEC/FSE’11, authors of accepted technical papers at VISSOFT 2018 can have their artifacts evaluated by the program committee. Positively evaluated artifacts will be reflected in the paper publication, presentation, and be formally announced during the conference. A paper with an accepted artifact will have five extra minutes of presentation which can be used to present the artifact. The authors will also be invited to demo the artifact during the interactive informal demo session organized for the tool demo track. Given the short time between the acceptance notification and the deadline to submit the artifact, we suggest the authors to start preparing it beforehand. Within the Walls of York Gaol is an interdisciplinary and multi-institutional project set up to research the application of Virtual Reality technology within a museums context. The project is situated in York’s Digital Creativity (DC) Labs (http://www.digitalcreativity.ac.uk <http://www.digitalcreativity.ac.uk/>), an impact-driven research centre that explores and develops new forms of digital creativity and interactive media experience. The post is funded by the AHRC Next Generation of Immersive Experiences funding scheme and will be part of a collaborative project between the University of York, University of Glasgow and York Museums Trust. The Within the Walls of York Gaol project investigates the use of Virtual Reality to deliver enhanced experiences of museums and heritage environments to audiences. The focus of the project will be on the re-interpretation of York Castle Museum Debtor’s Prison using immersive technologies. The successful candidate will play a central role in the development and evaluation of experimental immersive installations and will work closely with staff from all of the collaborating institutions. As the successful candidate you will have a PhD or equivalent experience and a strong record of publication in Human Computer Interaction, Digital Archaeology/Heritage or a related discipline (including but not limited to Computer Science, Digital Media Art, Game Design). You will have the ability to participate in the development of immersive experiences in collaboration with colleagues your skills profile should include one or more of the following: game design, digital art, 3D computer graphics, user experience evaluation. Some development experience would be preferred, particularly development for Unity. The post is available for 6 months from 1st May 2018 or as soon as practical after this date. There may be a possibility of an extension to the contract. The appointment will be made at Grade 6 and the salary will be £31,604 -£32,548 per year, pro rata.
