IEEE VIS 2018 Workshop: MACHINE LEARNING FROM USER INTERACTION FOR VISUALIZATION AND ANALYTICS CALL FOR PAPERS Date and Location: October 21 or 22, 2018 in Berlin, Germany Website: https://learningfromusersworkshop.github.io/ <https://learningfromusersworkshop.github.io/> The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers from across the VIS community – SciVis, InfoVis, and VAST – to share their knowledge and build collaborations at the intersection of the Machine Learning and Visualization fields, with a focus on learning from user interaction. Our intention in this workshop is to pull expertise from across all fields of VIS in order to generate open discussion about how we currently learn from user interaction and where we can go with future research in this area. We hope to foster discussion regarding systems, interaction models, and interaction techniques across fields within the VIS community, rather than the current state of having these discussions independently contained within the SciVis/InfoVis/VAST fields. Further, we hope to collaboratively create a research agenda that explores the future of machine learning with user interaction based on the discussion during the workshop. WORKSHOP TOPICS The topic of the workshop will focus on issues and opportunities related to the use of machine learning to learn from user interaction in the course of data visualization and analysis. Specifically, we will focus on research questions including: How are machine learning algorithms currently learning from user interaction, and what other possibilities exist? What kinds of interactions can provide feedback to machine learning algorithms? What can machine learning algorithms learn from interactions? Which machine learning algorithms are most applicable in this domain? How can machine learning algorithms be designed to enable user interaction and feedback? How can visualizations and interactions be designed to exploit machine learning algorithms? How can visualization system architectures be designed to support machine learning? How should we manage conflicts between the user’s intent and the data or machine learning algorithm capabilities? How can we evaluate systems that incorporate both machine learning algorithms and user interaction together? How can machine learning and user interaction together make both computation and user cognition more efficient? How can we support the sensemaking process by learning from user interaction? SUBMISSIONS We have two submission tracks: for papers and for posters. Papers We invite research and position papers between 5 and 10 pages in length (NOT including references). All submissions must be formatted according to the VGTC conference style template <http://junctionpublishing.org/vgtc/Tasks/camera.html> (i.e., NOT the journal style template that full papers use). He participated in research and development efforts in the EU 7th Framework Project PESCaDO and coordinated the University of Stuttgart participation in the BMBF-Project VASA. His research interests cover the areas of visual analytics, data mining, information retrieval, and social media monitoring. *Issei Fujishiro* Keio University, Japan Fujishiro is currently Chief Professor of the Center for Information and Computer Science, Graduate School of Science and Technology, Keio University, Yokohama. His research interests include volume visualization/graphics, applied visualization design, and smart multi-modal ambient media. He is serving on the steering committee for IEEE SciVis and IEEE PacificVis and serving as an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics and Elsevier Journal of Visual Informatics as well as a SciVis Papers Co-Chair for IEEE VIS 2018. Fujishiro is a member of Science Council of Japan. *Jaegul Choo* Korea University, South Korea Jaegul Choo is an assistant professor in the Dept. of Computer Science and Engineering at Korea University. He focuses on the intersection of machine learning and visual analytics, publishing over 60 peer-reviewed technical articles in premier venues in both fields such as TVCG, CHI, VAST, CG&A, CVPR, AAAI, IJCAI, KDD, WWW, WSDM, ICDM, TKDD, DMKD, ICWSM, and SDM. He earned the Best Student Paper at ICDM’16, the Outstanding Research Scientist Award at Georgia Tech in 2015, and he was nominated as one of the four finalists for the IEEE Visualization Pioneers Group dissertation award in 2013. *Kwan-Liu Ma* UC Davis, USA Kwan-Liu Ma is a professor of computer science, where he directs VIDI Labs and UC Davis Center of Excellence for Visualization. His research spans the fields of visualization, computer graphics, high-performance computing, and user interface design. Professor Ma is presently leading a team of over 25 researchers pursuing research in scientific visualization, information visualization, visual analytics, visualization for storytelling, visualization interface design, and immersive visualization. *Rüdiger Westermann* Technical University of Munich, Germany Ruediger Westermann studied computer science at the Technical University Darmstadt and received the Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Dortmund, both in Germany. In 2002, he was appointed the chair of Computer Graphics and Visualization at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). He is one of the main drivers of the Visual Computing and Computer Games initiatives at TUM. His research interests include scalable data visualization and simulation algorithms, uncertainty visualization, GPU computing, and real-time rendering. *Stefan Bruckner* University of Bergen, Norway Stefan Bruckner is a full professor in Visualization at the Department of Informatics of the University of Bergen, Norway. His research interests include all aspects of data visualization, with a particular focus on interactive techniques for the exploration and analysis of spatial data. He has made significant contributions to areas such as illustrative visualization, volume rendering, smart visual interfaces, biomedical data visualization, and visual parameter space exploration. In addition to his contributions in basic research, he has successfully led industry collaborations with major companies such as GE Healthcare and Agfa HealthCare, and has 6 granted patents. *Tobias Schreck* Graz University of Technology, Austria. Tobias Schreck is a Professor with the Institute of Computer Graphics and Knowledge Visualization at Graz University of Technology, Austria. He works in the areas of Visual Analytics and Digital Libraries. His research interests include visual pattern search and analysis in time-oriented, high-dimensional and 3D object data, with applications in data analysis, multimedia retrieval and cultural heritage. He has co-authored more than 150 papers in his research areas. He is currently a principal investigator in several Austrian state-funded research projects on Immersive and Visual Data Analysis for industrial applications. *Wei Chen* Zhejiang University, China Wei Chen is a professor at the State Key Lab of CAD & CG, Zhejiang University. He has performed research in computer graphics and visualization and published more than 60 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers in the last five years. His current research interests include scientific visualization, visual analytics and bio-medical image computing. *Xiaoyang Mao* University of Yamanashi, Japan Xiaoyang Mao received her B.S. in Computer Science from Fudan University, M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from University of Tokyo. She is currently a professor at Computer Science and Engineering Department, University of Yamanashi, Japan. Her research interests include texture synthesis, visual perception, non-photo-realistic rendering, VR/AR and their application to visualization. *Yingcai Wu* Zhejiang University, China Yingcai Wu is a ZJU100 Young Professor at the State Key Lab of CAD & CG, Zhejiang University. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). Prior to his current position, Yingcai Wu was a researcher in the Microsoft Research Asia, from 2012 to 2015, and a postdoctoral researcher in the University of California, Davis from 2010 to 2012. His main research interests are in visual analytics, information visualization, and human-computer interaction, with focuses on urban computing and sports analysis. Call for Participation: IEEE VAST Challenge 2018

The Visual Analytics Science and Technology (VAST) Challenge is an annual contest with the goal of advancing the field of visual analytics through competition. The VAST Challenge is designed to help researchers understand how their software would be used in a novel analytic tasks and determine if their data transformations, visualizations, and interactions would be beneficial to answer particular data-driven questions. VAST Challenge problems provide researchers with realistic data sets and questions for evaluating their software, as well as an opportunity to advance the field by solving more complex problems. This year, we return to the Boonsong Lekagul Wildlife Preserve scenario from 2017. New complications have arisen from last year's situation, providing new opportunities to apply visual analytics and other analysis skills. Overview Mistford is a mid-size city located to the southwest of the Boonsong Lekagul Wildlife Preserve. The city has a small industrial area with four light-manufacturing endeavors. Mistford and the wildlife preserve are struggling with the possible endangerment of the Rose-Crested Blue Pipit, a locally loved bird. Is a local company causing the birds' demise? The scenario for this challenge builds on last year's but the challenges are new. Mini-Challenge 1: Analysis of audio data and geospatial temporal information Claims that the Rose-Crested Blue Pipit are healthy and vibrant across the whole preserve are in question. New visualizations are needed to further investigate the birds' situation. Perhaps these bird call recordings could provide more insight into the real situation? Blending machine learning and visual analytics may be a powerful combination for this mini-challenge. Visualization and analysis of some challenging large scale graph data may provide further insights on the scope of the company's activities. This challenge may prove to be a stretch task for all VAST Challenge participants! CfP: 3rd IEEE VIS Workshop on Visualization for the Digital Humanities (http://vis4dh.org/) We are pleased to announce a call for papers for the 3rd Workshop on Visualization for the Digital Humanities “VIS4DH ⇔ DH4VIS” <http://vis4dh.org/>, to be held as part of the IEEE VIS conference <http://ieeevis.org/year/2018/info/workshops>. The call is open to all fields of the humanities and all branches of visualization. We are particularly interested in papers that bring different disciplines together. In this year’s workshop we are looking to initiate a critical conversation about the often very different conceptual languages and vocabularies deployed across the humanities and visualization and the ways in which those vocabularies operate in applied visualization techniques in the digital humanities. One only need to look to the media arts, visual communication, information visualization, and digital humanities to see exciting new examples of interdisciplinary research. In this year’s workshop, we hope to feature some of this visual innovation in the realm of applied visualization as well as to explore new avenues for interdisciplinary and collaborative research between visualization and the humanities. We will explore different vocabularies and conceptual frameworks deployed by computing on the one hand and humanities on the other, and use these to think about how to engage differences as potentially rich opportunities rather than seeing them as barriers. Some guiding questions for the 2018 workshop: - How can we translate (and mutually enrich) the conceptual vocabularies of the humanities and visualization? How do projects at the intersection of humanities and visualization research mutually impact the respective fields? - How do collaborating humanities and visualization researchers balance theory, practice and making in their intellectual work? What kinds of products do they value, and how do they define rigor in their work? How does the dissemination of their results represent these tensions and balance? - How do debates from the cultural and visual turns of the humanities find themselves reflected in visualization strategies? How can our visualizations be said to embody values emerging from those debates? - What are the epistemological stakes of visualization? How might we characterize knowledge produced by visualization? How are knowledge and visualization design intertwined? - What kinds of meaning, information or satisfaction are sought by users when interacting with visualization? How does our notion of audience affect how we design? How do we balance innovation and accessibility? - How can visualization create innovative design solutions that communicate the specificities of humanities data? - Does visualization always depend on turning the humanities into a computational problem? Are humanities researchers interested only in platforms for deploying their research, not in research that will push both fields forward? Are there alternative views? This workshop is seeking work from scholars in both visualization and the humanities who use visualization as part of the process of analyzing and interrogating human culture. Submissions will present original research ideas or results as they relate to visualization for the digital humanities. Each submission should clearly state its specific contribution to this growing field of research. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SUBMISSIONS Submissions will take the form of short (2-4 page - excluding references) papers, falling into one of two submission types: Short Papers -- These submissions are meant to summarize more mature work in visualization for the digital humanities, including case studies, system descriptions, and empirical results. Of special consideration are works that highlight the difficulties (and propose solutions) of designing visualizations for the digital humanities. Applied work from the digital humanities that is highly visual in nature would also be considered for acceptance. Position Papers -- These submissions are meant to present viewpoints and opinions on the interplay between visualization and the digital humanities. These positions should be informed by a deep involvement and experience in one (or ideally, both) fields. Position papers should be thought-provoking but also well-supported. Authors of accepted short and position papers will be invited to give 9-minute research presentations (including 2 minutes for audience questions) followed by moderated panel discussions. As a result, large high-resolution displays and the entire spectrum of mixed reality (MR) and ubiquitous computing all introduce opportunities to facilitate analytical reasoning and thus fall into the immersive analytics paradigm. This Research Topic is dedicated to "use-inspired basic research in immersive analytics" where a real-world problem shapes the design and studies. We encourage the discussions on intriguing issues of persuasive power of communications utilizing immersive display technologies, understanding the multifarious symbiosis relationships between humans and computing, and how best display and interaction can be used not only as a mechanism to conceive and communicate reality or how a set of visual variables can be encoded, but a means for influence, a way to persuade viewers to share that reality or at least to act in accordance with it. The consequences for design will be more powerful if immersiveanalytics can alter human assessments of and actions on their data. We are also interested in the building blocks of thought and crucial insights to be gained from the underlying structure of mental activities: the brain’s operations, which is perhaps the great remaining mysteries of human-computer integrated analytical reasoning. We like to explore how visual aids can link seemingly unrelated actions and events and how embodiment and new metaphors shape our minds and thinking, inspired by real-world uses. COMPUTER GRAPHICS & VISUAL COMPUTING 2018 (CGVC2018) The 36th Annual Conference organised by the UK chapter of the Eurographics Association, 13-14 September 2018, Swansea University, UK http://www.eguk.org.uk/CGVC2018/ Submission Deadline is this Friday ====================================================== The annual EGUK conference is a meeting place for all those in the UK working in computer graphics and visual computing (including, Computer Graphics and Vision, Information and Scientific Visualization, and Visual Analytics). It attracts researchers from across the country and from further afield. The 2018 conference Computer Graphics & Visual Computing will be an overnight meeting (lunchtime to lunchtime). The conference wants to focus on increasing the dialogue between academic research groups, researchers in academic and in industrial developments. In order to facilitate such dialogue, we are seeking contributions in the form of full papers, short papers, viewpoint papers, and extended abstracts (poster papers). • Full papers - a paper of 4 to 8 pages describing completed research, plus an additional page of references. Papers are refereed by members of an international program committee (IPC). Authors of accepted papers are expected to give a 20 minute presentation at the conference. Accepted papers will appear in the Eurographics digital library and will serve as full paper publications. • Short papers - The purpose of short papers is to present late-breaking results, work-in-progress, and follow-up extensions or evaluations of existing methods. Short papers will be peer-reviewed in a one-stage double-blind process by an international program committee (IPC). They will be electronically archived and are fully citable publications. Submissions for the short paper track should be at most 4 pages, with an additional page allowed for references. Accepted short papers will be presented orally at the conference in (approximately) 15 minute presentations. • Viewpoint Papers (aka. Position paper, ***new in CGVC2018***) - Viewpoint paper track enables researchers a new possibility to publish their ideas. Viewpoints articles offer detailed technical opinions on trends in visual computing or reports on how visual computing has contributed to the comprehension of data or phenomena, without the need to present completed research work and/or validated results. We encourage discussions of challenges or limitations in today's methods and areas of potential new topics of research. We are also interested in application discussions that focus on, for example, the areas of physical, life or social sciences, engineering, or commerce, or areas related to the process of visual computing in general. We encourage an emphasis on lessons learned from practical experience for application discussions, particularly where visual computing has been employed in a real, working environment. Viewpoint papers are submitted with author names and affiliations (at most 4-pages). Accepted viewpoint papers will be electronically archived, are fully citable publications and will be presented orally at the conference in (approximately) 15 minute presentations. Submissions to the full, short and viewpoint paper tracks that are not accepted for publication but are deemed suitable for poster presentation by the IPC will be offered an opportunity to present in the poster track. • Extended Abstracts (Poster Papers) - CGVC 2018 is re-introducing a poster track. The purpose of this track is to present late-breaking results, work in progress, and follow-up extensions or evaluations of existing methods. In particular, it provides young researchers, especially postgraduate students, with valuable opportunities to receive feedback from other researchers, and engage in stimulating discussions. The poster track will be managed by the co-chair team and the International Program Committee (IPC) for the papers track. We solicit poster submissions in the form of a poster and an accompanying sketch (i.e., an extended abstract of at most 2 pages, with an additional page allowed for references only). Posters will be peer-reviewed in a one-stage double-blind process. Accepted posters will be presented at the poster viewing session of the conference. Accepted extended abstracts (poster papers) do not appear in the Eurographics digital library, and will not be considered as a paper publication, instead being similar to a SIGGRAPH one-page sketch or to a conference poster without an associated full paper. As such, presenting an extended abstract or a poster at the conference has no effect on your ability to publish a fuller version of the same work in another venue.
