15th IEEE Symposium on Visualization for Cyber Security (VizSec) Call for Papers ================================================================================ *** Deadline Extension *** *** http://vizsec.org/vizsec2018/#cfp *** VizSec brings together researchers and practitioners in information visualization and security to address the specific needs of the cyber security community through new and insightful visualization techniques. VizSec 2018 will be held in Berlin, Germany in conjunction with IEEE VIS on Monday October 22nd. VizSec solicits both full and short papers, both of which will be published in the proceedings that will be published by IEEE. VizSec also solicits posters. Authors of accepted papers and posters must guarantee that their papers and posters will be presented at the conference. Technical Papers ---------------- Full papers describing novel contributions in security visualization are solicited. Papers may present techniques, applications, theory, analysis, experiments, or evaluations. We encourage the submission of papers on technologies and methods that improve cyber security practices, including, but not limited to: - Situation awareness and/or understanding - Incident handling including triage, exploration, correlation, and response - Computer forensics - Recording and reporting results of investigations - Assisting proactive security configuration and deployment - Reverse engineering and malware analysis - Vulnerability management - Multiple data source analysis - Analyzing information requirements for computer network defense - Evaluation and/or user testing of VizSec systems - Criteria for assessing the effectiveness of cyber security visualizations (whether from a security goal perspective or a human factors perspective) - Modeling system and network behavior - Modeling attacker and defender behavior - Studying risk and impact of cyber attacks - Predicting future attacks or targets - Security metrics and education - Software security - Mobile application security - Social networking privacy and security When applicable, visualization and interaction techniques that effectively capture the insights of human analysts and/or allow analysts to collaborate efficiently are particularly desirable. Submissions including tests and evaluations of existing tools and techniques are also considered particularly desirable. If possible, making the data used for the tests available will also be considered positively. If you do not have real-world data to demonstrate your visualization, you may be interested in looking at the VizSec Data Sets page: http://vizsec.org/data/ Full Papers should be at most 8 pages including the bibliography and appendices. Short Papers ------------ Short papers describing practical applications of security visualization are solicited. We encourage the submission of papers discussing the introduction of cyber security visualizations into operational context, including, but not limited to: - Cases where visualization made positive contributions towards meeting operational needs - Gaps or negative outcomes from visualization deployments - Situations where visualization was not utilized, but could have had a positive impact - Lessons learned from operational engagements - Insights gained from the transition process Cyber security practitioners from industry, as well as the research community, are encouraged to submit case studies. Short papers should be at most 4 pages including the bibliography and appendices. Posters ------- Poster submissions may showcase late-breaking results, work in progress, preliminary results, or visual representations relevant to the VizSec community. *2 Immersive Technologies/Learning Post Doc Opportunities* ChoroPhronesis, in collaboration with other groups such as Teaching and Learning with Technology, the Stuckeman Center for Design Computing, the Pulse of the Earth Lab (and others), at The Pennsylvania State University, are delighted to announce the opening of two postdoctoral research positions. The postdocs will be working in vibrant transdiciplinary teams that are addressing a range of topics that see transformative changes due to the potentially paradigm shifting nature of immersive technologies. Example topics include: ·Empirically validating immersive learning across the academic spectrum; ·Immersive decision-making for environmental decision making; ·Connecting immersive experiences to environmental and ecological modeling; ·Immersive storytelling; ·3D modeling and design; ·Foundations of immersive technologies. The postdocs will be coordinated through ChoroPhronesis (founded by Dr. Alexander Klippel) but will work across projects at The Pennsylvania State University and could have their primary home in units such as the Stuckeman Center for Design Computing or Teaching and Learning with Technology. In conjunction with IEEE VIS 2018. *** Submission Deadline: July 17, 2018 *** MOTIVATION AND BACKGROUND The goal of DSIA is to foster innovative research at the intersection of databases, machine learning, and interactive visualization. In this workshop, we will explore the idea that the next generation of database, machine learning, and interactive visualization systems should not be designed in isolation. For example, machine learning techniques might recommend improved data transformation and visual encoding decisions. Or, database query optimizers might take advantage of perceptual constraints, while prefetching methods reduce latency by modeling likely interactions. This workshop seeks to jump start cross-pollination between these fields. The program will be split between invited talks from researchers in these communities, and speculative, ongoing work that straddles the areas. LIST OF TOPICS This workshop will focus on interactive systems: techniques, methods, architecture, systems that enable the user to interactively explore and analyze large amounts of data in the back end with little or no latency. We encourage late-breaking work, research in progress, and position papers in interactive analysis, broadly construed. For example, topics of interest to the workshop include (but are not limited to): * design of database architectures for interactive analysis * novel database applications for interactive analysis * novel database techniques based on perceptual constraints and human-centered design * evaluation of database systems for interactive analysis * identify unique characteristics of databases for supporting vis * communication protocols between front and back ends * techniques for data storage, retrieval, compression, transformation, sampling, and streaming * techniques for metadata generation * front-end architectures that exploit these novel back-end capabilities We are interested, more generally, in the questions that arise at the *intersection* of these systems. Providing and building a platform for supporting the evolution and improvement of principles and guidelines, and fostering early proposal of principles and guidelines. ** Submission Info ** Authors are invited to submit original and unpublished short papers up to 4 pages (including references) that present innovative ideas, discourses, design concepts, empirical studies, theoretical frameworks, social models, and work-in-progress in the context of principles and guidelines in visualization and visual analytics. IEEE VIS 2018 Workshop: Toward a Design Language for Data Physicalization (deadline extension to 15th July 2018)

It has a wide range of application areas including, design, architecture, education, and personal analytics (see www.dataphys.org<http://www.dataphys.org>/ for a comprehensive list). However, despite of the large variety of case studies in this area, a principled way of encoding data into physical artifacts has yet to be established. The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers from different research communities (in particular visualization, HCI, and design) to discuss approaches toward a unified design language for data physicalization. Through a series of invited talks, alternating with small-group activity-based discussions, the workshop will start to consolidate different efforts of characterizing and evaluating the core properties or “variables” that drive data physicalization, and to define a research agenda in this area. We aim for this workshop to invite a diverse audience from all fields of professional practice, research, and education from the fields of information design, visualization, and human data interaction. WORKSHOP TOPICS Workshop submissions may approach the topic of physicalization design practices from a theoretical, practical, and/or empirical perspective. Topics include but are not limited to: * Design space of data physicalization * Data physicalization as a design practice * Design patterns of data physicalization * Systematic approaches to translating visual variables into physical data encodings * Studies of physical properties from a perceptual perspective * Teaching data mappings through physicalization in a systematic way * Considering material choices * Fabrication for physicalization (digital, manual, mixed) * The influence of physical environment, usage scenarios, and interaction models on physicalization design and physical encodings * Physical encodings in the context of data / visualization literacy In general, we very much welcome provocative works on the topic as well as works in progress. Works may build on previously published work, but should contribute a new perspective on the topic. All papers will be peer-reviewed by at least two researchers in the area. Accepted works will be made available on the workshop website and included on the IEEE VIS USB key. Accepted papers will be given an oral presentation slot at the workshop. At least one author of each accepted paper needs to register for the conference (even if only for the workshop). Paper submissions should not exceed 4 pages, including references in the IEEE VIS paper format. Pictorials/Artifacts: As an alternative to papers, we invite submissions that are more practice-based. These may follow different formats, including a mixture of text and sequential visuals, comic strips, videos, or physical artefacts. Pictorial/Artifact submissions should be limited to 1000 words and 10 pages; videos should not exceed 5 minutes. Pictorial/Artifact submissions should include reflections on the physical mapping, the design, creation, and the production process of existing physicalizations. We invite pictorial/artifact submissions to reflect in particular on the following questions: * Reflecting on your physical mapping process, how did you come up with the physical encoding of the data your physicalization is based on?
