CALL FOR PAPERS: ---------------- The 2019 Workshop on Visual Analytics in Healthcare (VAHC 2019) is the tenth annual workshop that provides an opportunity for participants to discuss state-of-the-art data visualization techniques and review how such techniques can be applied to healthcare data. The primary objective of the annual workshop is to bring together medical experts, leading scientists, and visionaries to discuss visualization techniques that can be applied to healthcare data and discuss the areas of healthcare that need more attention from the visualization and visual data mining communities. The workshop will enable participants to showcase their ongoing work on visual analytics of healthcare-related data through podium, posters, or demo presentations as well as to learn more about emerging techniques, software applications, and datasets. In years past, demos of prototype and/or production visual analytics software have been particularly well received, and paper submitters should also consider submitting a companion demo proposal. During the last nine years the Workshop on Visual Analytics in Healthcare (VAHC) has been organized and hosted annually. The VAHC workshop has been hosted five times at the IEEE VIS conference (2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, and 2017) and four times at the AMIA Annual Symposium (2013, 2014, 2016, and 2018). This year the VAHC 2019 workshop is held in conjunction with the IEEE VIS conference in Vancouver, BC, Canada. TOPICS AND SCOPE: ------------------ We will welcome discussions of the use of visual approaches, interaction design, statistical methods, and machine learning for healthcare data analysis. Participants may address the needs of a variety of users, including clinical researchers, epidemiologists, public health analysts, pharmaco-vigilance experts, physicians, hospital-based quality assurance officers, insurance claim analysts, and patients. It seeks to develop digital tools for conflict analysis and inclusive peacebuilding. The overarching vision is to build a collaborative peacetech hub at the University of Edinburgh, to harness the energies of interdisciplinary research, peacebuilding practitioners, and technology providers, which would produce a radical improvement in how peace processes are designed and managed to effectively end violent conflict. This Fellowship provides an opportunity to help us shape a research agenda and new forms of academic-NGO-business collaborations, for how data collection, analysis and visualisation, and visual storytelling can support conflict interpretation and peace processes. The fellowship will investigate how data analytics, data visualization, distributed applications and platforms for engagement and participation can help us monitor and understand conflict and peace processes worldwide. This can include text mining and analysis, aggregating data from different sources, dealing with incomplete and uncertain data, developing faithful visual representations of geographic multivariate and potentially temporal data, in innovative and interactive forms. The successful candidate will need to have strong programming and design skills, and experience in several of the following: visualization design, natural language processing, semantic web, web development and databases, workshop organization, ethnographic and qualitative research, user tracking. Software visualization is inherently interdisciplinary, drawing on theories and techniques from information visualization and computer graphics and applying these in the software engineering domain. The VISSOFT conference is principally a venue for publishing and discussing research related to software visualization. VISSOFT brings together a community of researchers from software engineering, information visualization, computer graphics, human-computer interaction, and data science to discuss theoretical foundations, algorithms, techniques, tools, and applications related to software visualization. This year's VISSOFT, co-held with ICSME, encourages a variety of submissions that address outstanding challenges in software systems using visualization. In addition to technical papers, VISSOFT features a New Ideas or Emerging Results (NIER) track and a Tools track. The submission of a video (up to 5 minutes in length) to accompany the paper is highly encouraged to show interaction possibilities. Authors of conditionally accepted papers must revise the paper based on the reviewers' comments and submit a response letter explaining how the comments are taken into account in the revised paper version. ACM ISS 2019 welcomes original, high-quality research and industry contributions that advance the state-of-the-art in the area of interactive surfaces, interactive spaces and novel interface technologies. See details below for information on paper formatting, length, and submission. When appropriate, authors are also highly encouraged to submit supplementary materials such as video or data. Papers will undergo a high-quality peer-review process by a committee of recognized experts in order to be presented at the ISS conference, be included in the conference proceedings, and be archived in the ACM Digital Library. ACM ISS is ranked as an A conference according to the CORE Conference Ranking. ISS does not accept submissions that were previously published in formally reviewed publications or that are concurrently submitted elsewhere. All papers, regardless of submission length, go through the same rigorous review process. As per ACM Prior Publication policies, authors should only submit original work that has not been previously published. Thus, submitted papers must contain a novel contribution (25% or more new content) to the field. If any related prior publication(s) by the authors exist, in any language, these must be disclosed at submission time, and the nature of the new contribution in relation to these prior publications must be clarified. This kind of paper corresponds to the standard scientific track of most HCI conferences. In addition to innovative systems, interaction techniques and studies, we are also open to surveys and other work that discuss the philosophy, trends and community aspects of academic research in interactive surfaces and spaces. APPLICATION PAPERS: Application papers are open to industrial and academic authors, and will explore how surface and spatial interaction can be applied to real world problems beyond the theoretical or research context, but without necessarily including original software, hardware, interaction techniques, or a formal study. For example, industry members can submit papers to share customer outcomes and iterative improvements over next-best alternatives. For application papers, reviewers will emphasize the connection between the real-world domain and the technology used. This connection may for instance concern a challenging domain, features of a system crucial for the real-world use context, a special design process, practical issues in implementation or deployment, or new business opportunities. Application papers are published in the same format as academic papers (will be presented during the main conference program, will be archived in the ACM Digital Library which provides free access through its Author-Izer service, and are free to publish), although they are reviewed through a slightly different process based on a rubric. Evaluation criteria for application papers will focus on aspects such as the description of a concrete, real-world application, the value hypothesis of the application design, the design process and principles followed during the design process, especially any design principles uniquely relevant to ISS, and discussion of design alternatives for the real-world context. More details on these evaluation criteria are below: - Real-world Application: The paper clearly describes a concrete application of interactive surface technologies to a real-world domain. The domain is richly described and there is a clear fit between the application and its real-world context. The paper demonstrates a clear understanding of the audience and their needs / values / priorities. - Value Hypothesis: The paper clearly describes the goals of the design or application and how the features work together to enable users to accomplish their tasks. - Design Process and Principles: The design presented in the paper best exemplifies relevant patterns, principles and practices that have been proven in ISS community research. The links between research and application are clearly explained. Each iteration of the design process is clearly described; logical reasoning behind feature changes is articulated. - Next Best Alternative: The paper helps the reader understand the competitive design space, and what needs the application fills within that space. First-time submitters in the application track are encouraged to apply for paper guidance well in advance of the submission deadline if deemed necessary (write to program2019(a)iss.acm.org) REVIEW PROCESS All papers will be reviewed by at least two external reviewers and a member of the program committee. After the review cycle a submission will receive either a "Conditional Accept" or "Reject" decision. Please do not submit extended abstracts or incomplete papers. As in the past, submit fully-completed, relevant, and publishable papers only. Incomplete, off-topic, or otherwise non-competitive submissions will be desk-rejected without review. Upon Acceptance All accepted papers must be presented as an oral presentation at the conference, by one of the authors of the paper. The presenting author must register for the full conference. In accordance with SIGCHI guidelines, ISS 2019 will have a “Best of ISS” awards program for accepted papers. Best paper awards will be awarded to papers in both the academic and application paper categories, and papers from either category will be considered for honorary mention awards. We are pleased to announce a call for papers for the 4th Workshop on Visualization for the Digital Humanities, “VIS4DH”, under the theme of Trust: Process and Interpretation. This will be a full-day workshop taking place as part of IEEE VIS 2019 in Vancouver, Canada. More information is available on vis4dh.org <http://vis4dh.org/>. CfP The call is open to all fields of the humanities/social sciences and all branches of visualization. We are particularly interested in papers that bring different disciplines together. The workshop is intended to put different ways of seeing, knowing, articulating, and transforming arguments into dialogue in order to foster and to intensify collaborations between humanities and visualization researchers. In this year’s workshop, we will explore questions of how to build trust when working at the intersection of visualization and humanities-related fields. There are many ways in which trust plays an important role in these collaborations, including questions around general methodologies, approaches to research questions, data collection, extraction and transformation, visual encodings, as well as interpretation and deriving knowledge. The role of visualization in communication has made it key in collaborations spanning many fields related to the humanities, including the arts, history, social sciences, linguistics, literary studies and beyond. The target of this workshop is to explore ways in which trust can be built, strengthened, and maintained when communicating and transferring methodologies, designing tools and encodings, collecting and curating data, and deriving knowledge. Some guiding questions for the 2019 workshop: How can we deal with different kinds of uncertainty (in data, methodology, research questions, visual encodings, and interpretation)? How can one make trustworthy visualizations for humanistic research? What does trust mean for different communities and sub-communities? How can trust be established in transdisciplinary projects? How much does trust rely on full understanding of methods, encodings, and other context, especially when collaborating across disciplines? What do humanities researchers need to see and know to be able to trust visualization, as a tool and process? Submissions This workshop is seeking work from scholars in visualization, the humanities, social science, and the arts who use visualization as part of the process of analyzing and interrogating human culture. Submissions will present original research ideas or results as they relate to visualization for the digital humanities. Each submission should clearly state its specific contribution to this growing field of research. Submissions will take the form of short (2-4 page - excluding references) papers, falling into one of two submission types: Short Papers: These submissions are meant to summarize more mature works at the intersection of visualization and humanities research, including case studies, system descriptions, and empirical results. Of special consideration are works that highlight the difficulties (and proposed solutions) of designing visualizations in the context of humanities research and/or applying concepts from humanities research to foster visualization research and design. Position Papers: These submissions are meant to present viewpoints and opinions on the interplay between visualization and the humanities. These positions should be informed by a deep involvement and experience in one (or ideally, both) fields. Position papers should be thought-provoking but also well-supported. Authors of accepted short and position papers will be invited for a brief research presentation (including time for audience questions). Submissions should be in two-column IEEE TVCG format. The 16th International Conference on Cooperative Design, Visualization and Engineering CDVE2019 conference will be held from October 6-9, 2019 in Mallorca, Spain.
