### Please redistribute as appropriate EXTENDED DEADLINE: *June 30th 2019* The IEEE Visualization and Graphics Technical Committee (*VGTC <http://vgtc.org/>*) sponsors the annual Best Doctoral Dissertation Award program to recognize outstanding academic research and development in visualization and visual analytics. The dissertations must address a topic relevant to visualization or visual analytics. The competition will be administrated by the IEEE Visualization Pioneers Group (*VPG <http://vgtc.org/content/ieee-vgtc-visualization-pioneers-group>*) under the auspices of IEEE VGTC. The IEEE VGTC VPG Doctoral Dissertation Award is presented annually at the IEEE VPG Reception held at the *IEEE VIS <http://ieeevis.org/>* conference. ELIGIBILITY All English language dissertations that have been successfully defended between August 15 two years before the award and August 15 of the year of the competition are eligible (e.g. between August 15, 2017 and August 15, 2019 are eligible for the 2019 competition). SUBMISSION LIMITATION There is no limitation on the number of nominations that may be made by a university. SELECTION PROCEDURE Five IEEE VPG members will form a review committee to thoroughly review and assess the dissertation submissions. The committee will judge the dissertations based on their intellectual merit, technical depth, and presentation quality. The selection committee will recommend the winning dissertation to the IEEE VGTC chair by October 1. AWARD The winner of the IEEE VGTC VPG Doctoral Dissertation Award will receive not only a monetary prize of $500 provided by IEEE VGTC, but also a chance to describe the impact of the winning dissertation in an invited article that may be published in IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications (CG&A) <http://www.computer.org/cga>. Professor Jim Foley of Georgia Tech and the editor of the CG&A Dissertation Impact Department will make the final determination about whether the article will be published. The CG&A Dissertation Impact Department recognizes the best and brightest dissertation work nominated by different visualization, computer graphics, and virtual reality technical communities from around the world. A postdoc position in graph drawing and related areas is open in the graph drawing research group led by Prof. Giuseppe Di Battista at the Department of Engineering at Roma Tre University. The research group includes Fabrizio Frati, Maurizio Patrignani, and Maurizio Pizzonia as permanent members, together with several postdocs and PhD students. The postdoc position is funded by the PRIN (Research Projects of National Interest) Project "MODE" - Morphing graph drawings efficiently. The ideal candidate for the position should have a PhD in Mathematics or Computer Science and should have a background in algorithms, theoretical computer science and/or discrete mathematics, preferably with an interest in graph drawing, graph theory, and/or combinatorial geometry. The postdoc appointment is to begin as soon as possible. The position is for one year, renewable for a second year. The position is full-time and research-only. The position is open to candidates of any nationality; in particular, no knowledge of Italian is required. The gross salary is 27.5K, which will result in ~1650 net per month. Updated IEEE VIS publication visualization tools

We recently updated the VISLists (http://iilabgt.org/vislists/) and CiteVis (https://www.cc.gatech.edu/gvu/ii/citevis/) systems that communicate data about IEEE VIS and IEEE InfoVis papers, respectively. The systems now include data from IEEE VIS 2018, except for VISLists missing the '18 VAST conference-only papers which haven't been pushed to the IEEE DL yet. The data driving VISLists is from the vispubdata project (http://www.vispubdata.org) and the data driving CiteVis is hand-curated and available on its website.

CfP Extended Deadline: Machine Learning from User Interactions (MLUI) at VIS 2019

The Machine Learning from User Interactions (MLUI) workshop seeks to bring together researchers to share their knowledge and build collaborations at the intersection of the Machine Learning and Visualization fields, with a focus on learning from user interaction. Rather than focusing on what visualization can do to support machine learning (as in current Explainable AI research), this workshop seeks contributions on *how machine learning can support visualization*. Such support incorporates human-centric sensemaking processes, user-driven analytical systems, and gaining insight from data. Our intention in this workshop is to generate open discussion about how we currently learn from user interaction, how to build intelligent visualization systems, and how to proceed with future research in this area. We hope to foster discussion regarding systems, interaction models, and interaction techniques. Further, we hope to extend last year’s collaborative creation of a research agenda that explores the future of machine learning with user interaction. We invite research and position papers between 5 and 10 pages in length (NOT including references). All submissions must be formatted according to the VGTC conference template. Papers are to be submitted online through the Precision Conference System at the MLUI track. All papers accepted for presentation at the workshop will be published on IEEE Xplore and linked from the workshop website. These papers are considered archival; reuse of the content in a follow-up publication is only permitted in a proper journal, and any extended version must extend the original paper by at least 30%. CHIIR 2020, 14–18 March, 2020 • Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada CHIIR 2020 is pleased to invite proposals for satellite workshops to be held in conjunction with the main conference. http://sigir.org/chiir2020/call-workshop-proposals.html CHIIR 2020 workshops will provide a platform for presenting novel ideas and emerging areas in Interactive IR, Information Seeking or Interfaces for Information Access in a less formal and potentially more focused way than the conference itself. Workshop topics typically match those identified in the CHIIR 2020 general call for contributions, but proposals related to other areas of Interactive IR are welcome as well. The format of each workshop is to be determined by the organisers and can be either full-day or half-day. We encourage workshops that foster collaboration, discussion, group problem-solving and community building initiatives.
