We plan to keep all the important dates of the conference as announced. ================================================ Graph Drawing is concerned with the geometric representation of graphs and constitutes the algorithmic core of Network Visualization. Graph Drawing and Network Visualization are motivated by applications where it is crucial to visually analyze and interact with relational datasets. Examples of such application areas include data science, social sciences, web computing, information systems, biology, geography, business intelligence, information security, and software engineering. GD has been the main annual event in this area for more than 25 years. Its focus is on combinatorial and algorithmic aspects of graph drawing as well as the design of network visualization systems and interfaces. GD 2020 will take place September 15-18, 2020, at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. Researchers and practitioners working on any aspects of graph drawing and network visualization are invited to contribute papers and posters, and to participate in the symposium and the graph drawing contest. PAPERS ------ We invite authors to submit papers describing original research of theoretical or practical significance to graph drawing and network visualization. Regular papers must be submitted explicitly to one of two distinct tracks described below. Papers submitted to one track will not compete with papers submitted to the other track. Track 1: Combinatorial and algorithmic aspects ---------------------------------------------- This track is mainly devoted to fundamental graph drawing advances, such as combinatorial aspects and algorithm design. The range of topics for this track includes (but is not limited to): • Design and analysis of graph drawing algorithms • Geometric and topological graph theory • Computational topology of graphs on surfaces • Geometric network design and optimization • Geometric computing Track 2: Experimental, applied, and network visualization aspects ---------------------------------------------- This track is mainly devoted to the practical aspects of graph drawing, such as the development of network visualization systems and interfaces in different application areas. The range of topics for this track includes (but is not limited to): • Visualization of graphs and networks in real world applications, including big data analysis • Engineering of network visualization algorithms and systems • Experimental results in graph theory and algorithms • Benchmarks and experimental studies of network visualization systems and user interfaces • Cognitive studies on graph drawing readability and user interaction • Interfaces and methods for interacting with graphs Authors of applied papers will have the opportunity to show a demo of their software/system during the conference. SHORT PAPERS ------------ In addition to the above two tracks, there will be a separate category for short papers, describing theoretical or applied contributions of shorter length. Papers in this category will be assigned a shorter time for presentation during the conference. SUBMISSION FORMAT ----------------- All submissions must be formatted using the LaTeX style file for the conference series Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) provided by Springer. The default margins and fonts must not be modified; in particular, the use of packages such as times.sty is not allowed. Submissions that do not comply with this format risk rejection without consideration of their merits. To promote inclusion of more figures in the submitted papers, submission will have a strict number of lines limit and the possibility to have one page more compared to previous years. REGULAR PAPERS HAVE AT MOST 400 lines (excluding references and figures) AND AT MOST 13 PAGES (excluding references). Short papers have at most 200 lines (excluding references and figures) AND at most 7 pages (excluding references). The claims of the paper should be fully substantiated. If this information does not fit within the page limits, the authors should include it in a clearly marked appendix, whose length is not constrained and which the reviewers may read at their own discretion. All submissions will be handled through EasyChair at the web site : https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=gd2020 POSTERS & CONTEST ----------------- Submissions of posters on graph drawing, network visualization, and related areas are solicited. The poster session will provide a forum for the communication of late-breaking research results (which may also appear elsewhere) to the GD community. Authors of posters should prepare an abstract (up to 2 pages in the LNCS style) that must be submitted together with the poster itself. Details about the traditional Graph Drawing Contest held at the conference are provided on the conference web site. PUBLICATION ----------- All accepted papers (including the two-page poster abstracts) will appear in the conference proceedings, published by Springer in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series. The LNCS proceedings will be made freely accessible to the GD community upon publication and openly accessible to anyone after four years. Authors will be required to submit their accepted papers to the arXiv repository, in order to provide immediate and unrestricted open access to them. The self-archived arXiv papers shall consist of the LNCS proceedings version (identical, except for possibly changed references to the appendix resp. the arXiv version) plus an optional clearly marked appendix. Subsequent submissions of revised versions of the paper to the arXiv (known as arXiv ``replacements’’) are allowed. Failure to comply with these guidelines will impede the publication of the paper. Each paper or poster must be presented at the conference by an author (barring unforeseen circumstances), otherwise the paper will not be included in the proceedings. Should any visa restriction prevent an author from attending the conference and presenting a paper, he/she will be given ways to participate and give the talk via electronic means. Selected papers from both tracks will be invited for submission to a special issue of the Journal of Graph Algorithms and Applications (JGAA). The authors of two selected papers in Track 2 will be invited to submit a substantially extended version of their work to IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (TVCG). Furthermore, two regular TVCG papers will be presented by their authors in a TVCG papers session. ACM IUI is where the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) communities meet, with contributions from related fields such as psychology, behavioral science, cognitive science, computer graphics, design, the arts, and more. Our focus is on improving the interaction between humans and digital technology, by leveraging both HCI approaches and state-of-the art AI techniques from machine learning, natural language processing, data mining, knowledge representation and reasoning. ### Why you should submit to ACM IUI While other conferences focus on either the AI or HCI side of this research, we address the complex interaction between the two. We strongly encourage submissions that simultaneously discuss research from both HCI and AI. We also welcome works that focus more on one side or the other, but still highlight the connections between the two. We value papers that contribute methodology or theory for the evaluation of intelligent user interfaces. We do not require evaluations with users, but we do expect papers to include an appropriate evaluation for their stated contributions. ACM IUI welcomes contribution from all relevant arenas—academia, industry, government, and non-profit organizations—and gives its participants the opportunity to present and see cutting-edge IUI work in a focused and interactive setting. The conference is large enough to be diverse and lively, but small enough to allow for extensive interaction among attendees and easy attendance to the events that the conference offers, ranging from oral paper presentations, poster sessions, workshops, panels and a doctoral consortium for graduate students. ### COVID-19 statement We are monitoring the situation regarding the global pandemic and associated travel restrictions. If needed, we will offer a virtual presentation option if the conference cannot take place due to the global pandemic, or if registered authors from specific parts of the world cannot attend the conference. ## Papers We accept two forms of contributions: full and short papers. Virtual Demos ISS 2020 is going fully virtual because of COVID-19, resulting in modifications to the Call for Demos in previous years. Unlike in previous years, a video demonstration is required at time of submission a poster is not required as part of the submission. WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR? Creative and innovative technologies and applications in interactive surfaces and spaces, including displays, input and sensing technologies, interaction techniques, shape-changing devices, computer vision applications, audio – speech interfaces, wearable devices, visualization techniques, interfaces for public spaces and more. Also demos from industry (i.e. commercial applications and products) are highly encouraged. What are the benefits? You will get the opportunity to perform an online demonstration of your exciting projects and ideas to experts from both academia and industry during the conference. Your submission will be published and indexed as an extended abstract in the ACM digital library. How will we evaluate? Demo submissions will be reviewed and selected by the demo chairs. Confidentiality of submissions is maintained during the review process. All rejected submissions will be kept confidential in perpetuity. All submitted materials for accepted submissions will be kept confidential until the start of the conference. Abstracts of invited demos from the papers track will not be reviewed. We will focus on interactive and exciting demos. We want to showcase interactive technologies from all over the world and create a highly exciting event. We thus encourage resubmission of existing exciting demos. Demonstrating during a virtual conference? Accepted demos will be demonstrated remotely by the authors to a live audience. At least one author is expected to present the demo during the times of the conference demo session and to interact with conference attendees. The virtual format of the demo session expands the capabilities of demo demonstrations in previous years, giving authors the opportunity to even demonstrate large-scale installations that could not have been brought to a conference venue. PREPARING THE SUBMISSION Every submission should include: A submission document using the ACM Master Article Submission Templates (single column), maximum 6 pages including references. Submissions should not be anonymized. Accepted submissions will be published on the ACM digital library. A video of up to 5 minutes long and at most 100MB in size. 1. Document submission The document submission should not be longer than 6 pages long, and must include all figures and references, and must be using the ACM Master Article Submission Templates. The submission should include a description of the relevance of the work to the immediate ISS conference community, as well as to the broader ISS community, emphasising its novelty, uniqueness, and rationale. 2. Video A video must be submitted along the written document, as it is the optimal medium to communicate your demonstration to the reviewers how authors envision their demonstration to the live audience at the conference. The video must be no longer than 5 minutes must be less than 100 MB in size. Please make sure that your video is playable on standard PC and Macintosh computers. We recommend that you encode your video as an MP4 using the H.264 codec. Submitted videos may be used on the ISS website during and after the virtual conference. SELECTION PROCESS Demo submissions will be reviewed by the ISS demos co-chairs for the suitability of ISS and this year’s virtual format. Due to the nature of this year’s conference format, submissions will be particularly evaluated on the quality of the accompanying video and the potential for remote demonstration. Review comments will be lightweight and justify the outcome. There will be no rebuttal phase. Novelty Resubmitting a demonstration shown at a previous venue is allowed. Authors are requested to mention that the work has been demonstrated at other venues in the PCS submission. UPON ACCEPTANCE OF YOUR DEMONSTRATION For each accepted demo, at least one author must register for the ISS 2020 conference. Authors will also be required to upload a still image as well as a 30 second preview video that will both be used to advertise the demonstration before and during the conference. The ISS 2020 poster program offers an engaging venue to present and discuss new and developing research. For each accepted poster, at least one author must register for the ISS 2020 conference. The authors are expected to present the accepted posters at the conference throughout the poster session. Authors will also be required to upload a still image as well as a 30-second preview video that will both be used to advertise the demonstration before and during the conference. Call for Participation: GD Contest 2020 with Remote Live Challenge

Dear Colleagues, the 28th International Symposium on Graph Drawing and Network Visualization will be held online from September 16 to 18 due to the uncertainty regarding future travel and physical meeting restrictions caused by the Corona virus outbreak. Nevertheless, as has been tradition since 1994, the symposium will be accompanied by a Graph Drawing Contest, allowing all community members to demonstrate their graph drawing skills in a fun competitive setting. The contest has two parts: the Live Challenge and the Creative Topics. 1) Live Challenge Following popular tradition, a live challenge will be held the day before the symposium in a format similar to a typical programming contest. Teams are presented with a collection of challenge graphs and have approximately one hour to submit their highest scoring drawings. This year, the challenge focuses on minimizing the number of crossings in a straight-line upward drawing on a fixed grid. Teams may either draw the graphs manually, or use their own customized tools. This year, remote participation will be possible for both categories! Hrafnkels Saga: This is an Icelandic saga which tells of struggles between chieftains and farmers in the east of Iceland in the 10th century. The provided Hrafnkel Saga Network models relationships between the actants of the saga. This graph consists of 43 vertices and 117 edges. 2. K-Pop: K-pop, short for Korean pop, is an umbrella term for popular music originating from South Korea. The provided K-pop network models relations between Korean artists, bands (groups), and management & recording companies (labels). This is a larger graph with 4675 vertices and 5094 edges. In both cases, you may visualize the graph in any way you like. Submissions will be judged on a list of criteria that includes, but is not limited to, readability, aesthetics, novelty, and design quality. The weighting of the criteria might be different for the two graphs. The goal of the tutorials is to provide a venue for presenting research on focused topics of interest and an informal forum to discuss research questions and challenges. Tutorials are designed to provide fundamental knowledge and experience on topics related to intelligent user interfaces, and the intersection between Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Note: We encourage you to contact the chairs with your ideas (emails above), and work together to prepare an exciting proposal. We encourage proposals for a wide range of tutorials, including but not limited to: - "Hands-on" or “project-centric” tutorials around a specific problem or topic. - Tutorials on a specific topic relevant to IUI; for example, methods and approaches in HCI and/or AI, specific techniques or algorithms to develop intelligent user interfaces, etc. Tutorials will be held on the first day of the conference. Indeed, the Big Data era has realized the availability of voluminous datasets that are dynamic, noisy and heterogeneous in nature. Transforming a data-curious user into someone who can access and analyze that data is even more burdensome now for a great number of users with little or no support and expertise on the data processing part. Thus, the area of data visualization, visual exploration and analysis has gained great attention recently, calling for joint action from different research areas from the HCI, Computer graphics and Data management and mining communities. In this respect, several traditional problems from these communities such as efficient data storage, querying & indexing for enabling visual analytics, new ways for visual presentation of massive data, efficient interaction and personalization techniques that can fit to different user needs are revisited. The modern exploration and visualization systems should nowadays offer scalable techniques to efficiently handle billion objects datasets, limiting the visual response in a few milliseconds along with mechanisms for information abstraction, sampling and summarization for addressing problems related to visual information overplotting. Further, they must encourage user comprehension offering customization capabilities to different user-defined exploration scenarios and preferences according to the analysis needs. Overall, the challenge is to offer self-service visual analytics, i.e. enable data scientists and business analysts to visually gain value and insights out of the data as rapidly as possible, minimizing the role of IT-expert in the loop.
