Call for Participation: GD Contest 2022 with Remote Live Challenge

Dear Information Visualizers, the 30th International Symposium on Graph Drawing and Network Visualization will take (hopefully) place in Tokyo, Japan, from September 13 to 16, 2022. As has been tradition since 1994, the symposium will be accompanied by a Graph Drawing Contest, allowing all community members to demonstrate their graph drawing skills in a fun competitive setting. Due to the uncertainty regarding future travel and physical meeting restrictions caused by the Corona virus outbreak, the contest will be either held completely online or in a hybrid format. Details of the exact format of the contest will be announced around the Graph Drawing submission deadline. The contest has two parts: the Creative Topics and the Live Challenge. 1) Live Challenge Following popular tradition, a live challenge will be held the day before the symposium in a format similar to a typical programming contest. Teams are presented with a collection of challenge graphs and have approximately one hour to submit their highest scoring drawings. This year, the challenge focuses on minimizing the planar polyline edge-length ratio on a ﬁxed grid. Teams may either draw the graphs manually (manual category), or use their own customized tools (automatic category). Remote participation will be possible for both the manual and the automatic category. The live challenge will take place during the conference. Opera Network The data represents a collection of opera performances that took place across Europe between 1775 and 1833. The data was extracted from the RISM database (https://opac.rism.info/main-menu-/kachelmenu/data) and was offered by Frans Wiering - professor of Utrecht University studing Musicology. There are several possibilities on how a network can be extracted from this data. We leave it to the participants to decide how and whether to model this data set as a network. 2. Aesthetic Experience Network The data set represents 8 networks that model an aesthetic experience of the viewers when observing artworks. The analyzed artworks are 8 paintings by Klee, Kandinsky, Mortensen, Miro and Winter. Each of the 14 nodes represents one of the two polarities of an aesthetic effect, and the edges are weighted by conditional dependence relations among aesthetic effects. In both cases, you may visualize the graph in any way you like. Submissions will be judged on a list of criteria that includes, but is not limited to, readability, aesthetics, novelty, and design quality. The weighting of the criteria might be different for the two graphs. Submissions will be handled through EasyChair. Call for Posters EG EuroVis 2022

Dear colleagues, we invite you to submit your research as a poster to EG EuroVis 2022! This year, EuroVis will be held June 13-17, 2022 in Rome, Italy. The posters track is specifically intended to present late-breaking results, work in progress, follow-up extensions, application case studies, or evaluations of existing methods. In particular, it provides young researchers, especially postgraduate students, with valuable opportunities to receive feedback from other researchers and engage in stimulating discussions. Submission Instructions We solicit poster submissions in the form of a sketch (i.e., an extended abstract of at most 2 pages in the EuroVis poster format, with an additional page allowed for references only). We strongly encourage the submission of additional materials. For example, you can submit an additional PDF (without any page limit) that contains a number of example results, screenshots, an interaction sequence, etc. The poster draft can also be added as additional material (but is not mandatory for the submission). Finally, submissions can also include supplementary material such as videos or executable programs. In particular for interactive tools/approaches, a digital video is essential and thus strongly encouraged to allow the reviewers to assess the interactive aspects. Poster sketches are to be submitted using the Poster sketches are submitted using the Precision Conference System (PCS)<https://new.precisionconference.com/>, according to the instructions in the submission guidelines section. Please note you shall select Eurographics as Society. Any accepted posters are required to have at least one (paid) registered author to attend and present the poster at the conference. This workshop aims to bring together research on such map-based interfaces which is currently dispersed through different publication venues and disciplines. This workshop will act as a common space for sharing map-related research expertise coming from the fields of visualization, user interface design and interaction design. This workshop is part of the International Conference on Advanced Visual Interfaces (AVI 2022), and is supported by the IFIP TC 13 Working Group on Human-Centred Technology for Sustainability (WG 13.10). CALL FOR PARTICIPATION We invite the participation of researchers, designers, developers and practitioners from a diverse range of backgrounds concerned with the design, development, evaluation and deployment of map-based interactive visualizations, applications, tools and services. Prospective workshop participants are invited to submit a position paper describing their contributions to the field of the workshop and highlight their specific interests in the workshop topics. Numbers permitting, the workshop will also be open to other participants without an accepted position paper. This workshop aims to include a wide range of topics related to map-based visualizations, interfaces and interactions, including but not limited to: – Theoretical foundations of map design. – Principles and practice of design of maps and map-like visualizations. – Design of map-based user interfaces and interactions. – Evaluation and user studies of map-based visualizations, interfaces and interactions. – Applications of map-based visualizations, interfaces and interactions in areas such as geographic information systems, epidemiology and healthcare, climate and environment, sustainability, education, social sciences and humanities. WORKSHOP STRUCTURE This full day workshop will be interactive and informal. It will combine short presentations of accepted position papers with periods of discussions, aimed at generating ideas for future research directions. The workshop will also include a hands-on activity, during which the participants will be invited to sketch designs for a map-based interactive mobile application in small groups. The designs will then be shared and discussed in the workshop. We hope to run the workshop in person at the conference. Provisions will however be made to run the workshop in remote or hybrid mode if necessary. This program is a great networking opportunity for both mentees and mentors to learn both about each other and the VR field in general! How do I participate? Interested individuals can opt-in to the Mentorship Program after registering for the 2022 IEEE VR conference. Mentors and mentees will be matched by the program organizers based on different levels of IEEE VR experience and research interests and will be put in contact before the conference begins. A sign-up form will be shared with *all registered attendees* of the IEEE VR 2022 conference. Interested participants should complete this form by *March 10, 2022*. This deadline is to give time for the committee to match mentors and mentees before the conference begins. What is involved in this program? Mentors and mentees are expected to participate in several activities together throughout the conference. Best regards, Christina, Guido, Michael, Thomas VisGap'22 Organizing Committee ____________________ VisGap - The Gap between Visualization Research and Visualization Software (co-located with EuroVis 2022, Rome, Italy) Over the years, many visualization methods and tools have been developed and published by the visualization research community. However, most of these are prototypes and never reach a state that can be reliably used by the target audience, e.g., domain scientists. Also, availability of these prototypes as source code or at least as executables is still the exception rather than the norm. The VisGap Symposium aims to shed a light on this gap between research and practical applicability, examine the obstacles every researcher faces, and propose solutions to overcome this problem as a community. VisGap'22 aims at gathering experts from all over the visualization community in order to advance the way our field works with software, sustains software, and values the effort our members put into developing said software. This year, we extend the scope of VisGap to include reproducibility and replicability. Both are cornerstones of the scientific method and essential for building trust in visualizations and increasing their acceptance, ultimately fostering adoption in the wild.
