We are inviting authors of interactive data visualizations, also called macroscopes, to submit their work for inclusion in the Places & Spaces: Mapping Science exhibit. IMPORTANT DATES Submissions due: Feb 15, 2022 Mapmakers notified: Apr 1, 2022 Submit final entries: May 30, 2022 Ready for display: Aug 31, 2022 Macroscopes are software tools that help us focus on patterns in data that are too large or complex to see with the naked eye. The idea of the macroscope was explored in 1979 by Joël de Rosnay in a book titled The Macroscope: A New World Scientific System [1]. To meet the challenges posed by the rapidly increasing abundance, diversity, and complexity of information, de Rosnay proposed the macroscope, a tool for observing “what is at once too great, too slow, and too complex for our eyes.” Like microscopes and telescopes, macroscopes can startle us when we point them at objects we thought we already knew. Through their lens, we may see familiar structures in a new light or gain a fresh perspective on an old process. This year’s call for submissions to the Places & Spaces exhibit celebrates the decidedly scopic feature of macroscopes. Simply put, we are looking for interactive visualizations that disrupt our old habits of seeing, that challenge our common patterns of perception in order that we might see something anew. To do so, they may use novel datasets and algorithms or employ innovative user interface designs. Places & Spaces is a traveling exhibit that currently features 100 maps and 28 interactive macroscopes from a wide range of disciplines. Since 2005, the exhibit has traveled to 28 countries and appeared in various formats at over 382 venues and events, including the Davos Economic Forum, National Academy of Sciences, and the New York Public Library. Submission Details Interactive data visualizations designed for desktop, mobile, touch-enabled, and/or large (e.g., tiled wall) devices are all welcome. To be incorporated into the exhibit kiosk, macroscopes must be 1) web-based, 2) touch-enabled, 3) allowed to run inside an iframe element, 4) have CORS enabled for http://idemo.cns. iu.edu, and 5) served over HTTPS. Macroscopes will be deployed on a 46” multi-touch 1920 x 1080 display running Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and Chrome 91. Each macroscope should be fully functional for at least two years. Macroscopes might be deployed using other hardware, please contact the curatorial team to discuss options. Macroscope authors should be available to work with the exhibit staff over a period of three months to prepare the macroscopes for public display and travel. Each entry must be submitted by February 15, 2022, and needs to include: * Title of macroscope * Author(s) name, email address, affiliation, mailing address, and social media handles * Link to online site that features the macroscope tool or to executable code * Macroscope tool description (300 words max): user group and needs served, data used, data * analysis performed, visualization techniques applied, and main insights gained. Please also outline * the vision that this new macroscope embodies. * References to relevant publications or online sites that should be cited, links to related projects or * works * Describe the impact your data visualization has had on public awareness, social policy, or political * action. * Submit entries via https://forms.gle/wPr5X16Cm5MwDb7c9 Review Process Submissions will be reviewed and evaluated by the exhibit advisory board (listed below) in terms of their: * Scientific rigor * Value as a tool for data exploration * Ability to provide new, actionable insights * Relevance for a general audience Final Submission Authors of winning entries will be contacted by April 1, 2022 and invited to submit final entries by May 30, 2022. Each final entry consists of: * Link to online site that features the macroscope tool or link to executable code. This must be a * fully self-contained version of the macroscope that can operate without any outside links and * without opening new windows. * Biographies for all authors (100 words each) * High resolution author portraits that are no smaller than 360 x 450 pixels, or 1.2” x 1.5” at 300 dpi. * Signed copyright and reproduction agreement Authors are welcome to use the expertise and resources of the exhibit curators and designers. The IEEE VGTC Visualization Awards program recognizes and honors individuals who have made a significant contribution to the community through their research and/or service. Furthermore, we seek out nominations of individuals that enable us to recognize both the diversity of individuals, as well as diversity of contributions, from the community at large. The VGTC Visualization Awards Program has five awards plus induction to the IEEE VGTC Visualization Academy: VGTC Visualization Dissertation Award The Doctoral Dissertation Award recognizes outstanding academic research and development in the field. VGTC Visualization Significant New Researcher Award The VGTC Significant New Researcher Award recognizes an individual who has made significant recent research contributions in the field. VGTC Visualization Technical Achievement Award The Technical Achievement Award is given each year to recognize an individual for a seminal technical achievement and/or significant contribution in the field. VGTC Visualization Lifetime Achievement Award The Lifetime Achievement Award is given to an individual to honor that person’s lifetime contribution to the field. VGTC Visualization Service Award The IEEE VGTC Service Award recognizes extraordinary service to the community through the IEEE VGTC and/or the IEEE VGTC Sponsored Conferences and Symposia. VGTC Visualization Academy Selection The IEEE VGTC Visualization Academy is a prestigious academy that highlights the accomplishments of the leaders in the field. Hi.. We are trying to revise our visualization courses to create one that combines topics in both infovis and scivis. Given that the conferences and the vis communities have been moving closer and closer together and due to some difficulties of offering multiple vis courses in our program, we are trying to have topics from each of these two categories. Clearly its impossible to do justice to both, but since most of our students would take only one Vis course, what would be a syllabus look like? I would like to see examples of anything like this that you might have in your programs. Or at the least, what would be t he absolute essential topics you would want to choose from Infovis and Scivis (sort of the core)? I am thinking of a course at the graduate level at this point, but some version of this at the undergrad level might come later. Many of these systems incorporate machine learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms to introduce some level of automation to the analytical process. However, there are aspects that can impact the effectiveness of the human-machine collaboration, including, but not limited to: 1) People's domain and system expertise; 2) Human biases, including cognitive and perceptual biases; 3) Trust in ML models and visual representation of data. The goal of this workshop is to highlight and foster a conversation around the intersection of visualization and human-centered AI research and practice by providing an interdisciplinary platform from relevant fields to communicate challenges and novel findings around such topics. **TOPICS OF INTEREST** 1. Trust considerations based on different areas of domain expertise (e.g., medical, security, scientific, financial domains) 2. Trust and bias considerations based on different levels of user familiarity with machine learning and visual analytics systems 3. Detecting and preventing cognitive biases in visual analytics and machine learning for users. 4. User trust in machine learning models and visual explanations of model decisions in visual analytics systems. 5. The correlation between trust, domain knowledge, and potential cognitive biases. 6. The relationship between domain expertise and trust with model transparency, human interpretability, and model understandability in visual data analysis. 7. The relationship between model interpretability, domain expertise, and trust. 8. Human-centered considerations in Human-in-the-loop visualization tools and interpretable models. **CONTRIBUTION TYPES** We are looking for and open to diverse forms of research (as listed below) within the realm of visualization and machine learning with appropriate emphasis and relation to human trust, expertise, and cognitive factors. We encourage submissions of research involving: 1. Human empirical research/findings 2. Design guidelines and surveys 3. Technique papers 4. Position papers 5. Case studies **SUBMISSION FORMAT** The workshop will accept papers with 2 to 6 pages in length, plus 2 pages of references. All submissions must be in IEEE VGTC Conference Style Template format (Download the templates here: http://junctionpublishing.org/vgtc/Tasks/camera.html ). We also encourage authors to submit a short 30-second video of their work (for publication purposes) when submitting their work, if applicable. Depending on the conference format this year (i.e., virtual or hybrid), the authors of the accepted papers might be required to submit a longer video (e.g., 5 to 10 minutes) to substitute a live presentation. In such an event, we will send further instructions closer to the workshop. The submissions are made through the PCS (Precision Conference Solutions) website: https://new.precisionconference.com/user/login?next=https%3A//new.precision… . At least one author from each accepted paper needs to register for the conference (please refer to the IEEE VIS Website http://ieeevis.org/ for the registration requirements). The submissions are not required to be anonymized and may include the full name of authors, their email, and affiliation as well as an acknowledgment. **PUBLICATION** The workshop accepts papers in two formats, as seen below. Upon submitting the papers, authors are asked to determine their desired paper format: 1. Archival Short paper publication through IEEE Xplore. This means that the papers can only be published in a proper journal as an extended version with at least 30% new content. This means each paper will be published and available through IEEE Xplore with an assigned DOI and are citable. While the papers published in this format can be extended to a journal publication (with 30% new content, subject to the rules of that journal), this content cannot be re-used for a future conference submission, such as IEEE VIS, EuroVis, and CHI. 1. Short paper statements or Work-in-progress notes, which will be non-archival. Authors are encouraged to submit videos to aid the program committee in reviewing their submissions. Review process The review process will have two cycles. *First review cycle* All submissions will receive at least three reviews. Based on the level of contribution, reviewers will make an initial recommendation for one of the following outcomes for each submission: *Conditionally accept as IEEE TVCG paper.* Continuing our cooperation with the IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (TVCG), paper submissions with substantial contribution will automatically be considered for publication in a special issue of IEEE TVCG. *Conditionally accept as conference paper.* The remaining accepted papers will appear in the Proceedings of IEEE VR and be archived in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library. *Recommend for major revision to IEEE TVCG.* Submissions that make a substantial contribution but that require revisions that are beyond what can be achieved within the conference reviewing process will be recommended for major revision to IEEE TVCG. Reviewer continuity will be attempted but not guaranteed. Note that as per IEEE TVCG rules a single major revision is possible. *Recommend as a 2-page poster.* If reviewers feel papers are not acceptable for the journal or conference tracks, reviewers may also recommend the papers for the poster proceedings. Posters are up to 2 pages including references. Traditionally, IEEE VR does not consider posters to be formal publications. Work accepted as a poster may be eligible for future publication in other venues. Posters will be included in the IEEE VR Abstracts and Workshops proceedings and will be archived in the IEEE Digital Library. *Reject.* *Second review cycle* Primary reviewers will review the revised papers and will make a final recommendation for acceptance. Should the conditions for acceptance not be met, the paper will be rejected. *Presentation at the Conference.* All accepted submissions must be presented orally during the conference either in person or remotely. There is also the possibility for authors of relevant previously published TVCG papers (accepted within the last year) to present their work at IEEE VR 2023. Interested authors should contact the editor in chief of IEEE TVCG for more details. *Review Duties for Authors.* The increasing number of submissions for IEEE VR makes us all dependent on a large number of good reviewers who are willing to provide feedback and engage with authors on their work. To expand the reviewing pool and to promote quality reviews, one author will be required to register to review up to three papers through PCS at the time of submission. Additionally, senior authors are encouraged to ask experienced junior authors to register in PCS to review papers, and then to mentor the junior authors during the review process. *Ethics and Responsibility.* All submissions describing research experiments with human participants must follow the appropriate ethical guidelines required by the authors’ institution, and authors are required to secure and report their approval by the relevant ethics committee. An approval by any ethical review board, if required by your affiliation, needs to be indicated via the submission system. *Abstract Submission.* Note that a paper abstract must be uploaded seven days prior to the actual paper submission deadline. A manuscript is considered to have been previously published if it has appeared in a peer-reviewed journal, magazine, book, or meeting proceedings that is reliably and permanently available afterward in print or electronic form to non-attendees, regardless of the language of that publication. A manuscript identical or substantially similar in content (in its entirety or in part) to one submitted to VR should not be simultaneously under consideration for another conference or journal during any part of the VR review process, from the submission deadline until notifications of decisions are emailed to authors. In some situations, a submission may build upon prior work. In order to fully explain the relationship between the submitted paper and prior work, authors may upload additional papers as well as a non-anonymous letter of explanation that highlights the significant changes or advances; these materials will only be seen by the primary reviewer. Specifically, this treatment is applied to the following cases: - non peer-reviewed works that are publicly available (on arXiv, as a technical report, etc.) - non-archival publications presented in past IEEE VR conferences (posters, demos, etc.) Submissions will be checked for plagiarism using IEEE Crosscheck. Detection of significant plagiarism will lead to rejection. Authors should work diligently to ensure that their submissions do not expose their identities either through carelessness or intentionality. Authors that have questions/issues around the double-blind submission policy should contact the program chairs. *Failure to make reasonable attempts to adhere to the double-blind policy will result in desk rejection.* *Pre-dissemination through public online repositories.* Uploading the submitted manuscript to an online repository (e.g., arXiv) before the end of the review process does not constitute a reason for rejecting the manuscript. However, the authors should be advised that doing so can compromise the anonymity of their manuscript and therefore bias its double-blind review. *Videos.* Videos must be submitted according to the instructions on the submission website. Videos submitted with papers will automatically be considered for possible inclusion in the video proceedings (video submissions may also be made independently, as described in the separate Call for Videos). When submitted as supporting material, videos must be free of any identifying information prior to reviewing as per the double-blind submission policy.
