Dear all, pleased to announce BioVis Meetup #6 (feel free to share invitation). Communicating Scientific Concepts Through Art with Beata Edyta Mierzwa, PhD - Molecular Biologist and Science Artist, Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research and UC San Diego and “Beata Science Art” When: Join us Jan 31 at 5 pm Berlin / 4 pm London / 11am East Coast US / 8 am California / What: Creativity is an integral part of both science and art, and using it to combine these two seemingly different disciplines creates unique and effective ways to communicate scientific information, both inside and outside the scientific community. Along my classical academic career path, I have been exploring the visual aspect of science communication using hand-drawn illustrations, science fashion, and interactive media. My drawings aim to convey complex biological concepts using both abstract imagery and real scientific data. Each illustration requires breaking down the essence of scientific findings and translating them into aesthetic visuals using metaphors that describe complex biological processes in intuitive ways. This form of visualization provides a powerful tool to facilitate communication between researchers from diverse fields, spark fascination and curiosity for science, as well as inspire our next generation of scientists. In this talk, I will share my journey towards combining science and art, highlight the impact of artistic practices on my own research and communication, and discuss avenues for scientists to explore this emerging field. A EuroVis short paper describes a more focused and concise research contribution and is likely to have a smaller — yet still significant — scope of contribution than a full paper. Short papers draw from the same paper types as full papers, as well as the same list of suggested topics. The following descriptive examples, which are characterized in contrast to full papers, may be helpful in understanding what kinds of submissions may be suitable for short papers: - A new visualization technique or system and evidence of its utility compared to known techniques or systems (described in sufficient detail to assist an expert reader in replicating the technique or system, but without exhaustive implementation detail and evaluation). - An incremental improvement or variation of an existing visualization technique or system with convincing evaluation. - An extensive evaluation of an existing visualization technique or system. - A well-proven counter-example to an existing visualization technique that helps to understand its limitations. - A new implementation approach that has demonstrably addressed a significant technical issue (without extensive evaluation of the implementation). - A new methodology for designing or studying visualization systems that has demonstrable benefits for the EuroVis community (without extensive evaluation of the methodology). - The practical application of established visualization techniques or a design study that can provide insights for visualization research on which future contributors can build. --------------- Important Dates --------------- Submission deadline: February 27, 2023 (Monday) Notification: April 04, 2023 (Tuesday) Camera Ready Version: April 18, 2023 (Tuesday) All deadlines are at 23:59 GMT on the date indicated. ----------------------- Submission Instructions ----------------------- Submissions for the short paper track should be at most 4 pages in CGF latex style, with an additional page allowed for references. Although immersive technologies have been advancing rapidly, their rate of public adoption has been slowed by the fact that many users experience physical discomfort during or after the use of VR devices, with symptomatic characteristics similar to motion sickness. Furthermore, studies have consistently shown that motion sickness disproportionately affects women, and concerns have been raised about the existence of inequitable barriers for engaging with immersive media. The Workshop on Immersive Sickness Prevention is intended to foster discussion between researchers, developers, and practitioners interested in addressing one of the most significant usability issues in the virtual reality field. We are soliciting primary research papers (4-8 pages) describing study results, novel interaction techniques, or technological interventions aimed towards understanding and mitigating cybersickness for users of immersive systems. We also welcome position papers (up to 4 pages) describing early-stage concepts, preliminary results, or case studies from industry. Conference on Database Theory (EDBT/ICDT 2023) Information Visualization is nowadays one of the cornerstones of Data Science, turning the abundance of Big Data being produced through modern systems into actionable knowledge. Indeed, the Big Data era has realized the availability of voluminous datasets that are dynamic, noisy and heterogeneous in nature. Transforming a data-curious user into someone who can access and analyze that data is even more burdensome now for a great number of users with little or no support and expertise on the data processing part. Thus, the area of data visualization, visual exploration and analysis has gained great attention recently, calling for joint action from different research areas from the HCI, Computer graphics and Data management and mining communities. In this respect, several traditional problems from these communities such as efficient data storage, querying & indexing for enabling visual analytics, new ways for visual presentation of massive data, efficient interaction and personalization techniques that can fit to different user needs are revisited. The modern exploration and visualization systems should nowadays offer scalable techniques to efficiently handle billion objects datasets, limiting the visual response in a few milliseconds along with mechanisms for information abstraction, sampling and summarization for addressing problems related to visual information over-plotting. Further, they must encourage user comprehension offering customization capabilities to different user-defined exploration scenarios and preferences according to the analysis needs. Overall, the challenge is to offer self-service visual analytics, i.e. enable data scientists and business analysts to visually gain value and insights out of the data as rapidly as possible, minimizing the role of IT-expert in the loop. The BigVis workshop aims at addressing the above challenges and issues by providing a forum for researchers and practitioners to discuss, exchange, and disseminate their work. The main focus of the advertised position (ref. LiU-2022-05261) is the web-based visualization of large and complex, multilayer networks. Related aspects, such as multilayer network embeddings, graph layouts for multilayer networks, or the visual analysis of attributes across network layers, will also be studied. Research in this doctoral project will involve foundational visualization principles, techniques and visual analytics tools for analyzing multilayer network data especially from the power systems domain. The work will even include the development and provisioning of a suitable backend infrastructure to serve the web-based, interactive visual display with the needed original and derived data collected during the analytical process. The postdoc fellow will conduct research within the fields of information visualization and visual analytics in close collaboration with ISOVIS members, other research groups of the department, and domain experts within the Linnaeus University Centre for Data Intensive Sciences and Applications (DISA). The work duties include the whole research cycle, i.e., from literature reviews and the identification of research challenges, throughout the implementation of visualization tools and performing user studies, to the reporting of the results in publications. In this context, the postdoc fellow is expected to regularly present intermediate/final research results at international conferences/workshops and publish them in highly-ranked conference proceedings and journals in the areas of information visualization, visual analytics, but possibly also in the areas of the domain experts. Within the DISA environment, large and complex data sets from various domain areas need to be efficiently visualized to transform data into useful information and new knowledge by the development of visualization principles, techniques and visual analytics tools, including provisioning suitable backend infrastructures to serve web-based, interactive visualizations. The research group mainly focuses on the explorative analysis and visualization of typically large and complex information spaces, for example in biochemistry, humanities, or software engineering. Our vision is to attack the big data challenge by a combination of human-centered data analysis and interactive visualization for decision making.
