Technological advances in computer vision algorithms and sensor hardware have greatly reduced the implementational and financial costs of eye tracking. Thus, it is unsurprising to witness a significant increase in its use as a research tool in fields beyond the traditional domains of biological vision, psychology, and neuroscience, in particular, in visualization and human-computer interaction research. One of the key challenges lies in the analysis, interaction, and visualization of complex spatio-temporal datasets of gaze behavior, which is further complicated by complementary datasets such as semantic labels, user interactions and/or accompanying physiological sensor recordings. Ultimately, the research objective is to allow eye tracking data to be effectively interpreted in terms of the observer’s decision-making and cognitive processes. To achieve this, it is necessary to draw upon our current understanding of gaze-behavior across various and related fields, from vision and cognition to visualization. Call for Papers: 1st International Workshop on Disinformation and Toxic Content Analysis (DiTox 2023), September 13th, 2023 https://ditox.ait.ac.at/ In conjunction with the 4th biennial conference on Language, Data and Knowledge (LDK 2023) to be held in Vienna, Austria. The spread of misinformation and disinformation not only affects people's perceptions and beliefs, but can also have a direct impact on democratic institutions, critical infrastructure, and lives and families. Most critically, it raises the more fundamental issue of what sources of information can be trusted at all, potentially calling into question our relationship of trust with traditional media. Because of these profoundly harmful effects, disinformation is seen as one of the most pressing problems of our time. The weak definition of the research task of disinformation analysis and detection, as well as the enormous range in terms of the heterogeneity and multimodality of the data involved, make this an exceptionally challenging field of research. The complexity ranges from media tampering detection to text content analysis to large-scale information fusion to analyze disinformation trends. Maintaining a comprehensive overview is equally difficult. Respectively, the overall goal of this workshop is therefore to provide insights on how approaches from different domains can be used to address disinformation at a technical level including AI/ML-based methods, visual analytics, and visualization approaches as well as interdisciplinary approaches inspired by the social sciences (i.e., computational social science). To this end, we invite task-specific contributions, as well as large-scale integration approaches, demo and project presentations, to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of the art in countering disinformation. Expected publication: December 2023 Visualizing textual information is a particularly challenging area of information visualization and visual analytics research. The types of data processing and analytic algorithms differ greatly from tabular or geospatial data, and the visualization techniques have additional constraints to consider, including the provision of context for text fragments of similar or different size and structure, depicting embeddings and high dimensional representations, and ensuring legibility of text incorporated into visualizations. The wide variation in data is accompanied by the difficulties in inferring the semantic meaning of ambiguous terms, or determining the referencing between subsequent statements. We invite the community to submit new articles examining the challenges and successes when applying information visualization to text analytics. Articles may focus on theories, methodologies, techniques and evaluations of visual text analytics approaches and systems. The Department of Computer Science in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University invites applications for a postdoctoral fellow. The appointment is a 12-month position, with the possibility of renewal for one additional year, and will commence on August 1, 2023. Applicants should hold a PhD in Computer Science or a related technical field on or before August 1, 2023. This position is part of a collaboration between the Computer Science department at American University, the Environmental Science department at American University, and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. The successful candidate will become a part of an interdisciplinary team working to visualize global seafood trade data to understand when global seafood trade either improves or threatens food and nutrition security. The project aims at developing novel methods and systems to support the construction and analysis of a global seafood trade network database to advance human-environmental research. The focus of this postdoctoral fellow position at American University will be in analyzing geographic network flow datasets and delivering novel and interpretable representations on the web. Candidates must have a strong programming background. Requirements: * Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related technical field. * Strong background in interactive data visualization and analysis. * Expertise in JavaScript, CSS, and HTML, and other technologies supporting website development. * Experience with server-side web technologies, such as NodeJS and Flask, is preferred * Experience with online databases, especially network database schema (e.g., Neo4J), is preferred * Experienced in designing and implementing empirical user studies. * Experienced with quantitative research methods. * Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a diverse interdisciplinary team. * Demonstrated ability to work with and mentor undergraduate students. * Excellent written and oral communication. * Research experience in spatial data analysis and/or GIS technologies is preferred. The workshop will provide the participants with an opportunity to share their diverse perspectives and research coming from their own contributing fields. It is part of the The 18th International Conference on Persuasive Technology 2023 Conference. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION ================== Potential participants are invited to submit short position papers that address and highlight their specific interests in the main research question of this workshop: How can visual interfaces and interactions be used to exploit the self-explanatory capabilities of AI-based persuasive systems to support their users? In addressing this question, the position papers may relate to a range of topics and areas of interest, including, but not limited to: – role of visual explanations in behavior change mechanisms and models. – explanation-based and/or visual persuasive strategies. – visual user interfaces and virtual agents for persuasive systems. – IxD aspects of interventions and visual feedback mechanisms. – quantitative and qualitative research investigating the effectiveness of AI-based persuasive strategies. – best practices, case studies, and applications of visual interfaces and interactions for persuasive systems. Numbers permitting, the workshop will also be open to other participants without an accepted position paper. WORKSHOP STRUCTURE ================== This one-day workshop is structured to make it fully participatory, practice-oriented and engaging. It comprises two main sessions. The morning session will be used for presentations given by the participants and an invited speaker. The afternoon will be reserved for group work to identify application domains, collect use cases, identify domain-specific as well as domain-agnostic commonalities and requirements, and exchange experiences on what has worked and what has not worked. Based on the analysis we will then compile a set of guidelines and recommendations for the design of visual interfaces and interactions for AI-based persuasive systems. We hope to run the workshop in person at the conference. Provisions will however be made to run the workshop in remote or hybrid mode if necessary. SUBMISSIONS ================== Position papers should generally be short (5-9 pages max), and prepared according to the Springer LNCS format (https://www.springer.com/gp/computer-science/lncs/conference-proceedings-gu…) Submissions should be made through Easychair (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=viiaips2023) The workshop organizers will review the submitted position papers, and select 10-15 papers for presentation at the workshop based on their quality, originality and relevance to the workshop research question and topics of interest. Accepted position papers will be made available to the workshop participants. The authors will also have the option of including their papers in a post-conference workshop proceedings that will be published through CEUR (https://ceur-ws.org/HOWTOSUBMIT.html) Details of this option will be made available closer to the workshop by the conference organizers. In addition, through the planned discussion session and group work, the workshop will actively seek other potential future outcomes. These may, for instance, include a special issue of an international journal and/or a co-authored report for dissemination of the workshop results.
