Call for Submission: VisGames - Workshop on Visualization Play, Games, and Activities

Dear community members, We invite submissions for first EuroVis Workshop on Visualization Play, Games, and Activities that is collocated with the EuroVis 2025 conference. Our mission is to advance visualization games and playful activities as dynamic tools for communication, co-creation, and collaborative problem-solving in interdisciplinary environments and contexts. This workshop will showcase innovative uses of visualization games beyond education, emphasizing their potential to enrich dialogue, build shared understanding, and inspire creative solutions in real-world contexts. The half-day workshop will feature an opening and fast-forward session, two hands-on World Café-style sessions for exploring submitted visualization games, and a reflection session for discussing experiences and concluding the workshop. Important Dates All deadlines are at 11:59 pm (23:59) AoE Anywhere on Earth (AoE) March 14, 2025: Extended Abstract April 16, 2025: Author Notification (before early bird registration for EuroVis) May 2, 2025: Camera Ready (4 weeks prior to conference) Workshop Goals and Scope of Topics With this workshop, we aim to: * Demonstrate visualization games (e.g., card games, digital games, etc.) and engage with the audience by playing the games at the conference, in a World Café setting. * Publish extended abstract (2--6 pages in the VisGames template format). Further, we intend to publish games on the online blog Nightingale, run by the Data Visualization Society. * Curate a repository for collecting and sharing visualization games for diverse audiences (e.g., children/adult learning, data journalists/data scientists/computer scientists/designers) in different scenarios (e.g., onsite, online, hybrid). * Create a discussion platform to create new game or activity ideas, exchange experiences, best practices, and challenges while developing visualization games. Workshop Topics The following topics fall within the scope of the workshop, but we encourage broader contributions. * Games supporting Storytelling, Idea Generation, decision-making, stakeholder engagement, visualization design evaluation, etc. * Visualization activities * Serious games * Digital games (e.g., mobile, web, video games, etc.) * Analog games (e.g., board games, card games, etc.) * Educational games * Gamification approaches Submission Guidelines and Reviewing Process The workshop’s extended abstract will be peer-reviewed by at least two PC members and one workshop organizer. The maximum length for submitted extended abstract to the VisGames workshop is 2-6 pages (in Computer Graphics Forum (CGF) style, including all images and acknowledgements, excluding references). Submissions must be made using the Computer Graphics Forum style, using the conference LaTeX template for workshops. Dear colleagues, The call for submissions for the 2025 PacificVis Storytelling Contest is now live. ~ ~ ~ ~ The Visual Data Storytelling contest celebrates its 9th year in 2025. This contest aims to encourage students, researchers, and visualization practitioners to demonstrate the value of data visualization through compelling visual data stories. This contest celebrates the emerging data communication genre, including data storytelling, narrative visualizations, explanatory notebooks, and visual essays. The contest will be held in conjunction with IEEE PacificVis 2025 from April 22-25, 2025 at National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei, Taiwan. Storytellers are invited to submit visual data-driven stories that draw upon any of these areas. In addition, entries that focus on computational journalism and artistic design projects are encouraged. Unlike contests such as the IEEE VAST challenge or the IEEE SciVis Contest, the data for the PacificVis visual data storytelling contest is intentionally left unspecified; storytellers are free to choose any publicly available dataset(s). Similarly, the task that storytellers are to accomplish is to successfully communicate a message or series of messages (i.e., a narrative, a series of insights) using data visualization techniques. The story's themes can draw from any topic, including current affairs, history, natural disasters, and research findings from the sciences and humanities. Dear colleagues, The *EuroVis PhD Award* recognizes outstanding dissertations in academic research and development covering topics relevant to visualization. The intent of this award is to recognize excellent young researchers in their early career and to highlight visualization research. Eligibility: All dissertations by PhD researchers from the European visualization community (e.g., through contributions to the EuroVis conference) that were defended and awarded a doctoral degree between Jan 1, 2023 and Dec 31, 2024 are eligible for the 2025 competition. The SDDS is a major infrastructure project funded by Smart Data Research UK, which aims to catalyse a paradigm shift in the quality and accessibility of smart data for research into digital and online experiences (e.g. games, social media). The SDDS will achieve this by creating a service that facilitates the large-scale donation of data by the individuals that it features. This will be made possible due to the UK’s GDPR regulations, which allow people to access personal data that companies hold about them so that they can donate it securely for research purposes. == Role == This role is a unique opportunity: as the successful candidate, you will help to drive profound societal change at a key juncture in online safety and digital wellbeing; and will engage in large-scale team science, tapping into the support of an inclusive and vibrant new research institution to enact this vision. You will play a key role in the design, development and evaluation of the SDDS. You will lead underpinning research that explores an exciting range of topics around potential donors’ perceptions, understandings and experiences of data donation (e.g. exploring the motivations that drive data donation and the barriers that could prevent it) and the research community's requirements for data and methods of working with it. You will also lead the development and execution of co-design processes that directly involve these groups in the creation of services that they will be motivated to use and benefit from. The outcomes of your work will directly shape the development of the SDDS — working closely with a user-experience designer and our software development team to translate findings into actionable designs, and by leading evaluations of people’s experiences with the service that support its iteration. You will be supported to publish your findings in high quality academic conferences and journals, and will be given opportunities to engage in the process of writing research grant applications and research leadership. == Skills, Experience & Qualification Needed == As the successful candidate, you will have a PhD in a topic that relates to the understanding of people and their interactions with interactive systems (e.g. Design, Psychology, Sociology, Human-Computer Interaction, UX) or equivalent experience. You will have knowledge of: research methods that enable the understanding of donors’ and researchers’ perceptions, needs, barriers and experiences of data donation and services that enable it; co-design approaches that can be used to involve a diverse community of donors and researchers in directly shaping the design of the data donation service; and research methods appropriate for evaluating people’s experiences of using digital interactive systems. We particularly seek candidates with specialist research knowledge in a field that relates to the goals of the data donation service (e.g. human-data interaction, the psychology of data donation) and/or knowledge of the area of online domains and experiences where smart data is gathered and processed (e.g. digital games, social media). Dear Colleagues, Please find below the CFP for our “Visualization Meets AI” workshop, co-located with IEEE PacificVis 2025. ===WORKSHOP=== Visualization Meets AI Workshop, colocated with IEEE PacificVis 2025 https://vismeetsai.github.io/ The task of data visualization generally involves a design step, which requires the knowledge of the data domain and visualization methods to do well. Because of the immense design space for optimization, it can take both novices and experts substantial effort to derive desired visualization results from data for exploration or communication. Following the resurgence of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in recent years, in the field of visualization, there is a growing interest and opportunity in applying AI to perform data transformation and to assist the generation of visualization, aiming to strike a balance between cost and quality. The use of visualization to enhance AI is the other active line of research. This workshop, held in conjunction with IEEE PacificVis 2025, aims at exploring this emerging area of research and practice by fostering communication between visualization researchers and practitioners. Attendees will be introduced to the latest and greatest research innovations in AI-enhanced visualization (AI4VIS) as well as visualization-enhanced AI (VIS4AI), and also learn about further research opportunities.
