Dear colleagues, We’re happy to announce the call for papers for the VIS4DH workshop co-located with the IEEE VIS Conference in Vienna, Austria! The VIS4DH workshop brings together researchers and practitioners from the fields of visualization and the humanities to discuss new research directions at the intersection of visualization and (digital) humanities research. This year, you can contribute to VIS4DH 2025 in two ways - you can submit to the workshop’s Paper track, or you can submit to the Agora track, which calls for provocations, artworks, work in progress, or lab talks. Our call for submissions is open to all fields of the (digital) humanities and social sciences, and to all areas of visualization research and practice. The workshop is intended to put different ways of seeing, knowing, articulating, and transforming arguments into dialogue in order to foster and intensify collaborations between humanities and visualization researchers. While the workshop theme for VIS4DH’25 remains open to all submissions exploring the intersection of the humanities and visualization, we especially invite contributions related to the theme Visualizing Peace and Conflict as a response to the global increase of violence and armed conflict (seehttps://ucdp.uu.se/encyclopedia). At the same time, however, submissions do not need to focus explicitly on conflict between warring parties. We also encourage submissions related to ideological, civil, social, environmental, or epistemic conflicts and the potential for their resolution to address a broader theme/trend of intensified division worldwide. The topic aims to bring together researchers in international relations, peace & conflict resolution, sociology, anthropology, digital humanities, and visualization to present and discuss how research approaches in these areas can critically inform one another and contribute to new ways of studying conflict and its peaceful resolution. Besides general contributions at the intersection of visualization and (digital) humanities that provide theoretical and/or applied perspectives, with this year’s theme, we invite work around (but not limited to) the following questions: * How can visualization techniques make cultural phenomena which are substantially structured or driven by tensions, antagonisms, controversies, or conflicts visible and negotiable? * How can visualization tools be designed to inform or support the resolution of conflicts? * What visual strategies can be employed to highlight how political conflicts frequently translate into representational or interpretive conflicts (e.g., generating contested or conflicting descriptions, datasets, framings, rhetorics, or other design choices)? * What role do disagreements play in collaborative research and visualization processes, and how might those be productively visualized rather than resolved or hidden? ========================================================================== 2nd Call for Papers VINCI 2025 The 18th International Symposium on Visual Information Communication and Interaction December 1-3, 2025, Linz, Austria Submission Deadline: June 13, 2025 Full CfP: https://www.vinci-symp.org/ ========================================================================== VINCI '25 includes tracks of Technical Papers, Art Papers, and Art and Media Galleries, as well as a new special track on Cultural Heritage. We solicit original, unpublished research papers that focus on all aspects of visual information communication and interaction, either via images, computer graphics, animations, virtual reality, web, artistic projects, or other visual media. Research papers should address cognitive and design aspects, underlying theories, taxonomies, implementation work, tool support, and case studies. ** TRACKS ** Technical Papers: A technical paper describes a new algorithm, technique, system, or theory that has not previously appeared in the literature. The description provided in the paper should be complete enough that a competent/qualified graduate student in visual information communication could implement or apply the work and should provide a formal/informal evaluation and discussion regarding its strengths and weaknesses. Art Papers: This track serves as a link between arts, design, technology, and science by offering creative views and artistic applications. We are especially interested in the submissions that demonstrate tangible and artistic ways of visual information communication and address information aesthetics. The topics range from experimental and interdisciplinary case studies and methodologies, novel and critical interfaces for VINCI topics to critical analysis of theory and reference works in the field. The art papers call is open-theme, and this year, we have three types in the Art Papers: full papers, short papers and posters. Art and Media Galleries: The VINCI Art and Media Galleries celebrates artistic creations demonstrating conceptual and technological innovation related to visual information communication and interaction. We accept project topics, including data art, generative art and design, interactive graphics, real-time simulation, scientific illustration, creative and critical visualization, and more. The art and media galleries call is open-theme. This year, we have two types in the Art and Media Galleries: Media Demos and Artworks. Cultural Heritage Special Track: A new Special Track this year to explore and advance the intersection of visual information communication and cultural heritage. This special track invites contributions that demonstrate how visual techniques, tools, and systems can be applied to safeguard, promote, study, and interact with cultural heritage, encompassing both tangible and intangible aspects. Technical papers, artistic works, and interactive systems or prototypes that contribute to the field of cultural heritage through innovative visual communication and interaction are welcomed. https://human-ai-sensemaking.github.io/ Beyond Chat: Visual Languages for Embodied Human-LLM Interaction in Sensemaking An IEEE VL/HCC 2025 workshop 2025 Workshop Summary Date and Location: TBD, co-located with IEEE VL/HCC (October 6-10, 2025), Raleigh, North Carolina, United States User interfaces for Human-LLM interaction in information-intensive tasks such as sensemaking have predominantly been limited to the chatbot style of interaction. The linear nature of chat poses significant limitations on sensemaking activity that often requires nonlinear thinking, incremental formalization, use of diverse information sources, etc. Human cognition in sensemaking tasks exploits a psychological phenomenon called embodied cognition, which externalizes thought processes onto interactive visual workspaces and canvases that enable complex iterative structuring of ideas. These nonlinear structures often represent various forms of visual languages for sensemaking —- space to think. While LLMs also exploit the notion of external memory in the form of prompt context or chain of thought, these are often limited to sequential text inputs. Is there a possibility of marrying the analogous concepts of human embodied cognition and LLM context? Can the visual languages of embodied cognition serve as a common ground between human cognition and LLM processing? Can LLMs have a form of embodied AI cognition that exploits visual languages? As AI agents become increasingly autonomous, how can visual languages support incremental progression and reduce uncertainty in various sensemaking scenarios, from simple coordination to active collaboration to full teaming, while enabling trust between humans and AI? This workshop seeks contributions that push these frontiers and bring together a multi-disciplinary group of researchers in HCI, AI, cognitive science, visual languages, and computer vision. The workshop will foster a community that will discuss and prepare a forward-looking research agenda for embodied human-LLM interaction with visual languages. Topics of Interest Topics of interest include but are not limited to: Design or evaluation of visual languages for AI User interface or visualization design for human-AI interaction Theories for human-AI common ground in sensemaking Methods for human steering or explainability of AI sensemaking NLP methods for augmenting LLMs with embodied cognition capabilities Models for LLM processing of visual languages Evaluations of human-AI teaming for sensemaking Call For Participation Two types of contributions are sought, each with separate deadlines and review criteria. Research Papers: Manuscripts that contain results suitable for publication, which will be presented at the workshop. Research paper submissions will be peer-reviewed by a minimum of one organizer and one knowledgeable external reviewer recruited by the organizers to ensure relevance, quality, and soundness of results. A length of 4-8 pages is required. The VL/HCC Conference plans to publish accepted workshop manuscripts in an accompanying volume published by IEEE. Dear Academic friends, We’re pleased to announce the call for papers for the Input Visualization Workshop, co-located with the IEEE VIS Conference in Vienna, Austria, taking place from November 2 to 7. Input visualization — “visual representations that are designed to collect (and represent) new data rather than encode pre-existing datasets” — provides a new lens for direct interactions with data through visualizations and physicalizations.
